Overview
Esteem works with young adults aged 14 - 26 to build lasting self-Esteem and stronger communities through group activities and 1-2-1 support.
Esteem creates spaces where everyone matters.
Esteem works with over 200 young adults annually across all of Sussex who face barriers to achieving their life goals. We have a base in Shoreham and offer a variety of different opportunities, including social drop-in sessions, mentoring, wellbeing sessions, volunteering and counselling. We have a dedicated staff team with various backgrounds and a commitment to championing the views of young adults throughout the organisation.
This is an exciting opportunity to volunteer for a charity that is passionate about giving young adults the chance to develop their skills and confidence, both for their own benefit and for that of society as a whole. Esteem works with young adults to run Wellbeing, Social, Mentoring and Volunteering opportunities, with a youth-led and asset-based approach.
This voluntary role of Trustee Safeguarding Lead is responsible for overseeing and ensuring the effective implementation of safeguarding policies and procedures within Esteem. The role requires a commitment to protecting the welfare of all beneficiaries, volunteers, and staff, ensuring that the organisation meets its legal and moral obligations to safeguard vulnerable individuals.
As part of the Board of Trustees you will be jointly and severally responsible for the overall governance and strategic direction of the charity, its financial health, the probity of its activities and developing the organisation’s aims, objectives and goals in accordance with the governing document, legal and regulatory guidelines. All trustees should also be aware of, and understand, their individual and collective responsibilities, and should not be overly reliant on one or more individual trustees in any particular aspect of the governance of the charity.
Individuals are sought who have a strong empathy with Esteem’s goal of enabling young adults to flourish. The Trustee Safeguarding Lead will be expected to contribute around 6 hours per month to the organisation, including board meetings, which run for two hours every two months, from 6-8pm at The Old School House, Shoreham. A minimum commitment of two years would be preferable. This post requires some flexibility due to the nature of Esteem being a growing organisation.
Your regular tasks and responsibilities will include:

Attend Board meetings on Tuesday evenings every 8 weeks at Esteem, from 6-8pm

Read meeting minutes and pre-reading documents ahead of meeting (sent at least 1 week before the meeting)

Contribute to all aspects of Esteems Strategy and maintain oversight of the organisation

Provide strategic oversight and guidance on all safeguarding matters at governance level

Ensure safeguarding is embedded in the organisation’s culture, practices, and decision-making processes

Develop, review, and update safeguarding policies and procedures to comply with legal requirements and best practices

Ensure that these policies are effectively communicated and implemented across the organisation

Promote awareness and understanding of safeguarding policies among trustees

Ensure that appropriate safeguarding training programs are developed and delivered regularly

Monitor compliance with safeguarding policies and procedures

Ensure that safeguarding incidents are appropriately recorded, investigated, and reported

Work alongside the DSL to report on safeguarding issues to the board of trustee, highlighting any risks or areas for improvement

About Us:
Evolve Counselling is a long-established charitable social enterprise, providing low cost, affordable or funded mental health counselling to adults in Cambridgeshire and surrounding counties. Our professional counselling community is made up of 50 – 60 qualified self-employed practitioners, working part-time to deliver talking therapies both online and in person.
We deliver around 500 counselling sessions per month to a broad range of individuals, many of whom would not otherwise be able to access therapeutic support. Evolve also provides supervision, reflective practice, critical incident support, and mental health awareness and related training to organisations and businesses large and small.
We are in the early stages of developing ambitious growth and innovation programmes, so this is a perhaps the most interesting time to be part of Evolve since we started in the 1970s. Opportunities for new Trustees to make their mark are considerable.
What We’re Looking For:
We are searching for an experienced legal specialist who can support our board, committees, and the CEO as we move through our next strategic stage of consolidation, then growth. Although long-established and successful, Evolve is reshaping itself and your legal expertise will be instrumental in positioning our charity to successfully meet the ever-growing demands and opportunities for supporting good mental health in our communities. Please note, a background in counselling is NOT a prerequisite for this role. Training will be available in general charity governance and in specific areas such as charity finance.
Your skills and knowledge, whether gained in the charity or commercial worlds, in a Legal Department or Practice, or a specialist consultancy, will help us to plan and “do the right thing” for our small staff and our self-employed counsellors, as we grow.
Including quarterly board meetings, committee sessions (at present virtual), a face-to-face AGM event, away days, and regular meetings with our CEO and the trustees, we anticipate a flexible time commitment of around 0-5 hours per month.

Trustee Role Description
Purpose of role:
The Board of Trustees is responsible for the overall governance and strategic direction of Wandsworth Care Alliance (WCA).
Scope and objectives:
Trustees have a duty individually and collectively to:
- Determine the overall direction and development of WCA through good governance and clear strategic planning.
- Ensure that WCA pursues the objectives defined in its governing documents, and complies with charity law, company law, employment legislation, and with all other relevant legislation, constantly striving for best practice in governance.
- Uphold the financial responsibilities invested in their position, undertaking such duties in a way that adds to public confidence and trust in WCA.
- Ensure that WCA uses its resources in pursuit of its charitable objects.
Main duties:
- To contribute actively to the Board’s role in providing direction for WCA, in setting overall policy and in maintaining a framework of good governance and accountability, and in evaluating performance against agreed targets.
- To give clear direction, leadership, guidance, and advice to the WCA director and staff.
- To safeguard the good name and values of WCA and to act as an ambassador for the organisation.
- To provide vision, inspiration, and support to the WCA director and staff.
- To ensure the effective and efficient administration of WCA.
- To ensure the financial stability of WCA.
- To appoint the director and monitor his/her performance.
- To use specific skills, knowledge, or experience to help the Board of Trustees to reach sound decisions.
This may involve:
- Scrutinising Board papers;
- Contributing to or leading Board discussions;
- Acting as a board champion for a particular area of WCA’s work;
- Identifying and focusing on key issues;
- Providing guidance on new initiatives;
- Being part of a working group.
Duty of care:
Each Trustee will:
- Apply reasonable care and skills as a Trustee, using their knowledge and experience to ensure that WCA is well run and efficient;
- Be ready to consider the need for external professional advice on matters where there may be material risk to the charity, or where the Trustees may be in breach of their duties;
- Safeguard the good name and values of WCA.
- Maintain absolute confidentiality about sensitive information received in the course of responsibilities as a Trustee.
Each Trustee will:
- Ensure that the charity is and will remain solvent; keeping informed of the charity’s activities and financial position;
- Avoid undertaking activities that might place the charity’s property, funds, assets or reputation at undue risk.
Each Trustee is required to act reasonably and prudently in all matters relating to the charity and must always bear the interests of WCA in mind.
Section 72(1) of the Charities Act 1993 disqualifies anyone who:
- Has been convicted of an offence involving deception or dishonesty unless the conviction is spent.
- Is an un-discharged bankrupt.
- Has previously been removed from trusteeship of a charity by the court or the Charity Commissioners.
- Is under a disqualification order under the Company Directors Disqualification Act 1986.
It is an offence to serve as a charity trustee while disqualified unless the Charity Commission has given a waiver under section 72(4) of the Charities Act 1993.
Accountability:
The law imposes a duty of care on Trustees to act responsibly and prudently in all matters relating to their charity and to act in the best interests of the charity.
WCA is a registered Charity and Company Limited by guarantee and Trustees are therefore accountable to the members, the Charity Commission, and to Companies House (as company directors).
Suitability as a WCA Trustee will include many of the following:
- Commitment to Wandsworth Care Alliance (WCA).
- Willingness to devote the necessary time and effort.
- Availability to attend meetings regularly.
- Strategic vision.
- Good, independent judgement.
- Ability to think creatively.
- Willingness to participate actively in discussions, listening to others and con- tributing accordingly.
- To use professional experience and any technical skills and knowledge to contribute to Trustee decision making.
- Ability to work effectively as a member of a team.
- Ambassadorial ability and willingness to represent WCA in a range of situations.
- Experience of involvement in community or residents’ groups and/or in building community involvement.
- Commercial awareness including, but not limited to: marketing, branding, fundraising and social media.
- Skills and experience within finance or communications.
- Valuing diversity, with experience and/or knowledge of minority issues and perspectives.
- Capacity to pursue potential sources of charitable investment in WCA.
- Willingness to take part in training and learn new skills.
Person specification
Trustees should possess:

What are we looking for?
As well as a passion for the Institute, our special collections and our work, the successful candidate must have an accountancy qualification and hands-on senior level financial experience. We would welcome candidates who already have experience as a trustee at a charity in the heritage, arts or education sector, but this is not essential. The successful candidate will be skilled at analysing complex financial information, communicating it clearly and succinctly, and at working in a team.
The successful applicant will sit on the Finance Committee and will work closely with the Chair of the Finance Committee, the Chief Executive and the Head of Finance & Enterprise to ensure the smooth financial running of Bishopsgate Institute and to enable other Trustees to carry out their financial responsibilities.
What’s the commitment?
There are normally four Board meetings a year held in person at the Institute, on Monday evenings, and in some years there is a strategy away day for the full Board. The Finance Committee normally meets online two weeks before each Board meeting. Trustees are consulted by email between meetings as the need arises. All Trustees are encouraged to attend events at Bishopsgate Institute.
Trustees serve for an initial term of three years and a maximum term of six years and are legally accountable for the responsible governance of the Institute. Trustees are not remunerated.

Join us in becoming a mentor to a young person interested in charity leadership during our six-week training programme, Trust in You, starting at the end of October 2024.
What is the programme about?
Trust In You is a programme funded by City Bridge Foundation and delivered by Sculpt UK which aims to develop young people's skills around leadership and governance, and working in the charity sector. During the six-week programme, young people attend training sessions around becoming a trustee, and are partnered with a mentor.
Programme dates: 23 October 2024 to 27 November 2024.
Why is supporting young aspiring trustees important?
We know, from research by the Young Trustees Movement, that less than 3% of trustees in the UK are under 30 and we are on a mission to change this!

Many charity boards lack diversity. Young people bring fresh perspectives and help charities stay responsive.

Young people are the future leaders driving social change. There is high interest in trustee positions from young people but a lack of development opportunities.

Young people don’t feel heard. There is growing demand to increase youth agency in addressing the challenges they face.
How can you get involved?
We are looking for current or former trustees to be mentors for our young participants during the six-week programme. You’ll share your insights and experiences, provide valuable guidance, and support our young people work towards their goals. Don’t worry If you have never been a mentor before - we offer a mentoring guide as well as check-in calls with the programme lead at Sculpt UK who can guide you through this process.
What will you be committing to as a mentor?
We are looking for trustees who will be able to provide at least 2-3 mentoring sessions for our aspiring young trustees during the programme. These sessions can be online or in person. Where possible, this can also include providing them the opportunity to sit in on one of your board meetings (for a non-confidential section). This will help our aspiring trustees better understand the dynamics and language in board meetings.
Other ways to get involved
We are also looking for leaders in the charity sector and / or trustees to come and join one of our sessions where we have a panel of charity leaders and trustees speak about their work and experiences, share learnings, and answer questions from our aspiring young trustees.

We are the Elisabeth Curtis Centre, a purpose built Riding for the Disabled centre on the outskirts of Bedford in the village of Bromham. We’re an independent charity and a member of the national Riding for the Disabled Association (RDA UK), supporting over 80 participants with the support of over 100 volunteers in the last year.
We provide our participants the therapy, fitness, skills development and the opportunity to achieve through the use of our fabulous herd of 9 horses and ponies. The Organisation:
The Thalidomide Trust is a unique organisation supporting 430 beneficiaries, now all aged in their 60s, born with disabilities as a result of their mother taking the drug, thalidomide, during pregnancy. Their physical disabilities include limb damage, hearing and visual impairment, brain and sensory impairment and damage to internal organs. They are a remarkable group of people, who have achieved a great deal despite often living with extreme levels of disability.
Our beneficiaries have very complex and varied needs which are increasing as they age, and we have gathered a wealth of data about them and gained an in-depth understanding of their evolving needs through our structured programme of three-yearly Holistic Needs Assessments (HNAs).

The Role:
We are looking for an experienced and credible senior health or social care professional with a strategic approach and knowledge of the current challenging environment - ideally in respect of disability and ageing - to join our Board of Trustees. Our Vision is that ‘each and every beneficiary of the Trust has access to the resources and support they need to live their best life for the longest time’ and, as they enter the next phase of their lives and as their needs grow ever more complex, you will play an important role in ensuring we provide the best possible future for them.
Person Specification:
You will bring the following skills and experience to the role:
- Experience of operating at a senior level in a health and/or social care environment (this could be in policy, systems leadership or practice) with a high external profile and strong links with professional social care networks.
- Knowledge of current health and social care policy and provision and the implications for our beneficiaries as they age.
- Integrity, empathy and the ability to contribute to effective decision making in the best interests of all beneficiaries of the Trust.

Terms and Conditions:
You should also be willing and able to devote approximately 1.5 days per month (plus travel time) – and specifically be available to attend three full day board meetings, at least two half-day Health & Wellbeing Committee meetings and one beneficiary event each year.
This is a voluntary role, but reasonable expenses incurred will be reimbursed.

We already have a fantastic group of volunteers, working in our charity shops, fostering animals in our care and undertaking vital home assessments of potential animal adopters. In April 2024, our branch expanded, encompassing our existing area of Lincoln, Gainsborough, Wragby, Witham St Hughs, Woodhall Spa and Horncastle and gaining new geographical areas including Grimsby, Cleethorpes, Louth and Mablethorpe. Our volunteer base is crucial to support our re-homing, run our charity shops and fundraising activities efficiently and we now have ambitious plans for our expanded area to ensure more mistreated animals can find their forever homes.
About us:
RSPCA Lincolnshire Mid, NE & Lincoln Branch rehabilitates and re-homes animals rescued by the RSPCA's national Inspectors. We also promote responsible pet ownership and hold animal action days such as for microchipping.
We currently run two charity shops and regular fundraising events, to support more than 100 animals escape cruelty and neglect, to find their forever home each year.
What you can bring to our board:
The Trustees make extremely important decisions for the branch, for example deciding on how to raise income for the branch, as well as meeting in sub-groups to consider important subject matters with recommendations being made to the full board of trustees. Our branch is an extremely passionate branch with eleven trustees currently forming the committee.
We are looking for someone willing to bring their volunteer management experience to our board. We want to ensure we are communicating well with our volunteers and maximising opportunities for them to bring their skills and expertise to our branch activities through targeted engagement. You will support our decisions around communications and events, volunteer activity planning, volunteer recruitment, training and performance management, and much more.
You will live and/or work in our branch area in Lincolnshire, UK, to bring local insight to our branch decisions.
We meet monthly as a board, with most of these online but we like to also meet at least 3 times each year in-person, as well as support local fundraising events.

Role Description
Position: Treasurer (Honorary Officer and Trustee)
Reports to: Chair of the Board of Directors
Location: London
Remuneration: The role of Treasurer is not accompanied by any financial remuneration, although expenses for travel may be claimed
Time Commitment: Four Board meetings and four Finance & Investment Committee meetings per year. Attendance at the annual Florence Nightingale Commemoration Service. Attendance at annual Presentation of Scholar Certificates.
The Treasurer is also expected to have regular meetings with the Chief Operating Officer (COO), and to remain in regular contact with the charity’s auditors and other stakeholders as required.
Objective
The Treasurer is responsible for overseeing the financial affairs of the Charity and ensuring they are legal, constitutional and within accepted accounting practice. You will ensure proper records are kept and that effective financial procedures are in place. You will report to the Board and the annual general meeting on the financial position of the organisation. You will oversee the production of necessary financial reports/returns, accounts and audits. In partnership with the FNF Team, the Treasurer (with COO) are responsible for the preparation of the annual financial review and accounts for approval by the Board and AGM.

- Be aware of and discharge the responsibilities of a Trustee of a Charity and a Director of a Company
- Contribute to strategic target setting and monitor performance to ensure consistency with the values of the Foundation and support the Charity to meet its charitable objectives
- Provide financial leadership to the Charity and its Board, ensuring that it has maximum impact for its beneficiaries
- Ensure the Board regularly reviews financial risks and associated opportunities, and satisfies itself that controls and systems are in place to manage and mitigate risks and take advantage of opportunities
- With the COO and members of the Finance & Investment Committee ensure financial accountability of the Board in fulfilling its duties to maintain the sound financial health of the Charity
- Represent the Trustees on any subsidiary trading company Board.
- Work within all agreed policies adopted by the Charity
- Ensure that the Charity’s financial strategy supports initiatives that promote diversity, equity and inclusion

- Liaise with the CEO to maintain an overview of the Charity’s financial affairs, providing support and direction as necessary

SHAK (South Hampstead and Kilburn Community Partnership) is a resident led charity based on the iconic Alexandra and Ainsworth estate* in the Kilburn ward of Camden NW London, an area of high rates of deprivation and poverty but big potential. Shak was established in 2003 and has a committed board of 6 trustees, staff team and volunteers who have played a key role in supporting the community during the recent COVID 19 and cost of living crisis. Impressive recent growth means that we wish to strengthen the board through the appointment of individuals who ideally have links to the area, time and skills to contribute towards the good governance of the organisation and support our work in the local community.
We are seeking 2-3 new trustees with skills and time to commit to fundraising. We are particularly interested in recruiting people who live locally and increasing representation at board level from minority communities. You would be joining at an exciting time when we are undertaking a strategic review and setting in place a new plan forward
Appointments are initially for three years, with the opportunity for re-election, up to a maximum of nine years. Trustees are unpaid, but reasonable out of pocket expenses can be reimbursed.
