Girls Not Brides is the only global organisation uniquely focused on creating and sustaining a worldwide movement to end child, early and forced marriage and unions (CEFMU). This is a neglected global issue affecting over 12 million girls annually. We are a network of more than 1,400 civil society organisations in over 100 countries working in partnership to end child marriage.
Our vision is a world without child marriage where girls and women enjoy equal status with boys and men and can achieve their full potential in all aspects of their lives.

Our new cohort of trustees for the Board of Girls Not Brides should be exceptional individuals whose skills and experiences set them apart in terms of being able to make a substantial contribution to our evolution and growth. We are looking for people who are committed, engaged and reliable.
To work alongside our new Chair, we are seeking candidates who will bring a background in one or more of the following areas:
- Senior level financial management experience and willingness to assume the role of treasurer (including Chairing the Finance and Audit Committee).
- Senior-level experience in governance and / or in people management.
- Strong understanding of, and experience in, the field of the child marriage and / or intersecting areas such as human rights, gender equality, education, shifting social norms or reproductive health, preferably gained within the international context and / or in countries and regions where the global partnership is active.
- Experience of high-level advocacy and including around national, regional and international policies.
- High level experience of networking, philanthropy, and leveraging of resources.
- Successful track record of coalition/movement building.
We are committed to further enhancing the Board’s diversity, in terms of ensuring: (i) a comprehensive range of skills and expertise; and (ii) that it is representative of the cultures and backgrounds where the global movement is most engaged. In 1993, after meeting survivors of wartime rape in Bosnia and Herzegovina, Iraqi activist Zainab Salbi had a vision for an organisation where women could find support, solidarity, and practical skills to rebuild their lives after the ordeals of conflict. More than thirty years later, Women for Women International has reached over half a million of the most marginalised women in the world, helping them to access power and transform their lives and communities. We offer women in conflict-affected countries vocational and business skills training, rights awareness, health education, and additional emotional and social support through a year-long training programme.
WfWI is a global organisation. National organisations in the UK (since 2005) and Germany (since 2016) play a major role in fundraising from individuals as well as institutions, foundations and corporate donors. In 2019, a new global strategy, with a more unified organisational structure was adopted. About Circles South East
Circles South East, based in Oxfordshire, is an award-winning charity which works to reduce the impact and instances of sexual harm through prevention, rehabilitation, education and safeguarding.
We have a long record of working within the field of reducing impact of sexual harm. We work with Survivors and others impacted by sexual violence to help them heal and perpetrators to help them to avoid re-offending.
We are organisational members of the BACP, and take referrals from organisations such as Victim Support, Children’s and Social Services, Rape Crisis, Probation Victim Liaison Units, GP Surgeries etc as well as from potential clients themselves.
Volunteers are at the core of what we do, and operate across all aspects of our work.
What will you be doing?
Trustees ensure their charity has a clear strategy and that all decisions put the needs of the service users first. They safeguard the charity’s assets – both physical assets, including property, and intangible ones, such as its reputation. They make sure these are used well and that the charity is run sustainably. They hold the CEO to account and provide support and encouragement to them and the team. Trustees are jointly responsible for all their decisions and work together to ensure the charity delivers it’s aims.

The Alternatives to Violence Project (AVP) serves people who want to handle conflict well without using or suffering violence, whether physical or psychological. Our trained volunteer facilitators deliver intensive, low-cost, conflict-resolution skills workshops in the community, in prisons and in other settings. We reach diverse communities, attracting people from across a wide spectrum of ages, ethnic backgrounds, and socio-economic backgrounds.
We are looking for new trustees to join our Board.
We are looking for candidates with the ability to think creatively and strategically, and exercise good, independent judgement in helping us achieve our ambitions. Whilst you do not need to have prior non-executive experience, we are looking for individuals with a good grasp of governance and strategic leadership.
Candidates should:
- Understand and accept the legal duties, responsibilities and liabilities of being a trustee
- Be committed to AVP, its purpose and its values as set out in the constitution, strategic aims and values statement
- Be willing to devote the necessary time and effort to the role of Trustee

About Been There:
Been There is a small (but growing!) charity in the form of an app that connects people aged 18 and over with a vetted and trained mentor to help with any body image issues they may be experiencing. About the role:
If you are an experienced fundraiser, we need your help! Been There’s Board of Trustees share ultimate responsibility for governing the charity and directing how it is managed and run. As a member of the Board, you will help set the strategic aims, objectives and direction of the charity. You will help to ensure our fundraising is of the highest standard and that we are meeting our fundraising objectives as well as complying with our legal duties. Alongside relevant experience, you will also possess an ability to work to tight deadlines, prioritising multiple tasks, and will be a natural team player with excellent written and spoken English.
Board meetings are held every other month for 2 hours (two via Zoom and one per quarter in Kingston-Upon-Thames). If required, this role can be completely remote and you can attend the quarterly meeting over video call.
Role Summary:
· To assist the Board of Trustees to develop a comprehensive fundraising strategy for Been There
· To guide, support, and challenge the Communications Manager and fundraising volunteers.
· To report to the Trustees on a regular basis, giving an update on fundraising achievements, plans, and progress.
· To ensure fundraising is of the highest standard and priority within a robust governance framework that meets all relevant legislation.
Main Responsibilities:
· Oversee fundraising to make sure it is carried out in legal, honest, and accountable ways.
· Strategically assess where fundraising fits into the overall charity strategy, and work with the Trustees to ensure effective income generation is being achieved.
· Contributing knowledge of fundraising techniques, best practice, and strategies.
· Assessing risks in new fundraising directions, alerting the Board of Trustees in a timely manner, as and when necessary, of key concerns.
· To report to the Board at a strategic level on the successes and challenges of the fundraising strategy.
· To help the charity further develop its fundraising capabilities through effective people and processes.
· On an ad hoc basis, to work with the Chair of Trustees and the Communications Manager, outside of the Trustee meetings, to support and develop the fundraising strategy.
Person Specification:
· To have substantial background as a senior charity fundraiser with a sound understanding and experience of charity fundraising at strategic and operational levels.
· A good understanding of fundraising within a small charity and the challenges facing small charities.
· Experience of diverse income generation practices.
· Sound, independent judgement and ability to think creatively.
· Ability to give constructive feedback and provide challenge.
· Experience in the charitable or voluntary sector.
· An ability to work to tight deadlines, ensuring prioritisation of multiple tasks.
· A natural team player with excellent written and spoken English

● To contribute actively to the Board of Trustees role in giving firm strategic direction to the organisation, setting overall policy, defining goals and setting targets and evaluating performance against agreed targets.
● To safeguard the good name and values of the organisation.
● To ensure the effective and efficient administration of the organisation.
● To ensure the financial stability of the organisation.
● To protect and manage the property of the organisation and to ensure the proper investment of the organisation's funds.
● If the organisation employs staff, appoint the CEO and monitor his or her performance.
In addition, with other trustees to hold the charity “in trust” for current and future beneficiaries by:
● Ensuring that the charity has a clear vision, mission and strategic direction and is focused on achieving these.
● Being responsible for the performance of the charity and for its “corporate” behaviour; ensuring that the charity complies with all legal and regulatory requirements.
● Acting as guardians of the charity’s assets, both tangible and intangible, taking all due care over their security, deployment and proper application.
● Ensuring that the charity’s governance is of the highest possible standard.
● Trustees are required to sign a non-disclosure agreement at the time of joining the board.
● As well as the various statutory duties, any trustee should make full use of any specific skills, knowledge or experience to help the board make good decisions.
We are an app-based charity that connects people over 18 with a vetted and trained Mentor (who has also 'been there') to help with body image issues.
