Sudbury and South Suffolk Citizens Advice helps people find solutions to life challenges by proving expert advice. We are an independent charity and part of the national citizens advice network. Although our office is in Sudbury, our coverage area is South Suffolk where we work closely with Suffolk County Council, Babergh District Council and other agencies and elected bodies. Our office has a team of c50 volunteers and staff and their efforts contribute over £1m of value to the local community.

Role Description

We are looking for a Chair to run the Board of Trustees as  part time and voluntary role.

The Board of Trustees provides the executive with support and guidance. The Chair is responsible for leading the Board of Trustees and sub-Committees, providing  vision, strategic direction and making decisions that impact the organisation and wider community.  A time commitment of  a day a week is needed with the opportunity to contribute more time if desired.

Qualifications & Experience

Leadership experience and a successful track record is desirable

External relationship management as an ambassador for the charity with key external organisations and strong gravitas

Strategic decision making, governance and sound judgement

Excellent communication/interpersonal/influencing skills and high emotional intelligence and drive

Ability to foster a collaborative  team environment

The Historic Towns and Villages Forum (HTVF) is seeking new trustees to help the Board make the most of a transformative stage in its history. HTVF became a registered charity in 2024, and over the last year has undertaken a review of its mission, vision and strategy, with two new Executive Co-Directors.

About us: The Historic Towns and Villages Forum (HTVF) is an independent charity with a mission to promote the prosperity, sustainability and heritage of historic cities, towns and villages for the benefit of all.

We provide support, training and information to organisations (including local authorities, town and parish councils, civic and amenity societies, and consultancies) as well as individual professionals, students, and members of the public engaged in the planning and management of historic cities, towns and villages. We aim to help them conserve the character and significance of historic places, while realising their full social, environmental and economic potential. We do this through events, research projects, publications, and partnerships.

What we’re looking for: We are seeking a minimum of three individuals with experience in one or more of the following areas to join our Board of Trustees:

• Senior professional leadership in a Local Authority
• Placemaking and urban regeneration expertise
• Marketing and fundraising
• Financial management
• Community and political engagement
• Research programme development and management

For these roles we also value:

• Innovative Thinking: HTVF is entering a new phase of development. A creative and forward-thinking approach to challenges and opportunities is sought from our new intake of trustees.  The ability to facilitate the Forum’s engagement with other organisations and groups would be helpful too.
• Geographical Spread: We aim for a wide geographical representation and welcome applications from across the UK, bearing in mind some meetings will be face-to-face in either London or Oxford.

In this round of recruitment, we are looking in particular for an Honorary Treasurer. All new trustees will receive a comprehensive induction to the role and the work of the Charity.

What will you be doing?

The trustees' role is to provide guidance, governance and strategic direction. We have small paid staff (including a full-time CEO) who co-ordinate a large cohort (~150) of volunteers.

The commitment for a trustee is 6 meetings (early evening) per year plus an annual away-day. Periodically trustees will also be needed for other duties - eg interviewing potential employees.

Our funding comes from a variety of sources: local council, National Lottery and other major funders as well as many local people and businesses.

We our looking to boost our Trustee capacity with a need for both "general" trustees and in particular people with financial knowledge able in due course to take on the role of treasurer. Other specific skills desired are: HR, knowledge/experience in the homeless sector, property management.

Whilst we welcome people of all faiths and none, the charity has its roots in local Christian churches and we particularly welcome interest from people active in their local churches.

We are looking to add more than one trustee. 

We are particularly interested in people with: financial expertise, experience in the homelessness sector, experience in property management, HR. 

However what is needed above all is people with vision and commitment to what we do as an organisation and a lack of experience in those areas is not a bar to application.

The Caldecott Foundation provides specialist residential care, fostering families and education for disadvantaged, vulnerable and traumatised young people in the UK.

We are seeking a Trustee with risk management and/or auditing experience. You will join a team of Trustees and staff helping some of the most vulnerable children in our society to build a future and reach their potential.

This is a fantastic opportunity to take on a leading role for the Board on organisational risk management and audit arrangements. Whilst the organisation currently has expertise in finance and business who can contribute to discussion around organisational risk, the Caldecott Foundation is seeking to add to this expertise, primarily regarding risks concerning Ofsted regulations, reputational and service delivery risks pertaining to working with vulnerable young people.

Whilst applications from all sectors will be considered, it is hoped that this important role can be filled by someone with expertise in social care and, ideally, someone who understands the organisational challenges and risks inherent in working with children and young people.

Person Description

• Someone with a passion for helping the most vulnerable children build a future and reach their potential.

CPRE campaigns nationally and locally for positive solutions which safeguard the long-term future of our precious countryside which is facing multiple threats. At national level, the charity produces in-depth research and sound arguments to press government, Parliament and other decision-makers to support our countryside, be it national landscapes or simply much loved local green spaces, through policies which ensure:

- The right development in the right place

- Active support to improve biodiversity and

Here in North and East Yorkshire, the largest of the CPRE regions (6,900 square miles!), we have a successful track record of enabling residents and community groups to help shape development in ways that enrich the countryside around them. The role

Our small but energetic team of volunteer Trustees enable people to protect the countryside they love and enjoy the benefits it brings wherever they live.  But with your support we can do even more! 

In joining us as a Trustee on the Board you’ll have a general role in developing the charity in line with our strategy and, together with other Trustees, ensuring compliance with Charity Commission and other legal and governance regulations.  However additionally as our Lead for Local Authority Communications you will use your particular  knowledge of policy development in this arena to inform and guide the Trustee Board on Local Authority campaigning and coordinate and drive forward related activities to meet agreed aims.   

+Trustees initially serve a three-year term and may serve up to six years in total.

You will be co-leading our Board of Trustees in North London and supporting our CEO to ensure that our mixed-ability groups and activities positively change experience and attitudes around learning disability.

Spike Island is a dynamic arts centre and registered charity that supports, produces and presents contemporary art across an 80,000 square foot former industrial building near Bristol’s harbourside. We run a diverse programme of exhibitions and events; and directly support artists through major new commissions, subsidised studios and development opportunities. We also offer bespoke exhibition services and are home to Emmeline café, workspaces for designers and creative businesses, and UWE Bristol’s Fine Arts programme.

Citizens Advice Plymouth employs 180 staff and has 50 volunteers, who work both locally and nationally to support people who have problems with debt, housing, welfare benefits, employment and many other advice areas.

The Role

We currently have 9 Trustees and are looking to strengthen our Board of Trustees with 2 new Trustees, who can use their professional and lived experiences, skills and talents to contribute to the on-going success of the Charity. We are specifically seeking individuals who offer experience in one or more of the following areas:

- Chair designate to take over from the current Chair once inducted and has a full understanding of the organisation. We expect that to take approximately 6-12 months depending on time commitments.

- Finance and accounting (not necessarily within a charitable setting, but this would be beneficial) in order to succeed our current Treasurer in 2 years’ time.

- Leadership experience within a charitable organisation

HDSF believes that quality of life can be improved through involvement in sports and physical activity opportunities - and that everyone should have access to these benefits.  The Charity exists to provide support, education, training and the opportunity to take part in sporting activities for individuals who struggle to access sport and physical activity - to improve physical health and wellbeing.  

Following our recent skills audit, the Board would like to appoint a Trustee with Human Resources skills and experience to challenge and support the Board and Senior Management Team.  We plan to expand our services across the county over the coming years and are looking for a Trustee who will share their skills and enthusiasm to support and drive our strategy, as well as broadening the diversity of thinking on our Board.   Above all, our Trustees should be passionate about what HDSF is striving to achieve.

Charitable Activities

We are a relatively small charity (CIO with 7 permanent staff) working to support adults and children in Hertfordshire to participate in recreational sporting activities, with a focus on those with physical and/or learning disabilities. We aim to provide and support opportunities in sports and physical activity that can be accessed by everyone, whether it be through participation, volunteering, coaching or education in a supportive and non-judgmental environment.

We offer a fully inclusive service across three key programme areas; Community activities, Bikes without Barriers and our hub for outdoor activities at Stanborough Park.  Working with a diverse range of partners (including Day Services, special schools and community groups) and individuals, providing cycling opportunities for young people and adults, community fitness sessions in a variety of locations, weekly activity sessions at Stanborough for young people and adults (including watersports), and holidays session for children with physical or learning disabilities and their siblings.  Our activities include cycling, boxercise, keep fit, paddleboarding, bell boating and much more – each activity is adapted to the needs of the individual without any assumptions about what they can and cannot do.

In addition, we work in partnership with a number of different agencies across Hertfordshire, including Herts Sport & Physical Activity Partnership, to provide training and advice on how to make physical activities accessible to all.

About the role of Trustee 

HDSF Trustees meet face to face 5 times per year (usually in the Hatfield area); 4 Board meetings and one full day for teambuilding and strategic planning.  We also have online meetings in the intervening months for training or a briefing on a specific topic.  Trustees are also encouraged to visit HDSF activities at least once a year.  

Salary: This is a voluntary role although HDSF will refund reasonable travel and subsistence expenses and all work-related expenses. 

Hours:A minimum commitment of 4-8 hours per month.

HDSF Trustees serve for a three year term with the potential to serve for 2 terms at a maximum.

Role Purpose:

Trustees play an essential role in the governance of any charity, as they; 

• approve operational strategies and policies, and monitor and evaluate their implementation,
• oversee HDSF’s financial plans and budgets and monitor and evaluate progress,
• ensure the effective and efficient administration of the organisation,
• ensure that key risks are being identified, monitored and controlled effectively,
• provide support and challenge to the Charity Director in the exercise of their delegated authority,
• keep abreast of changes in HDSF’s operating environment,
• attend Board meetings, adequately prepared to contribute to discussions,
• use independent judgment, acting legally and in good faith to promote and protect HDSF’s interests, to the exclusion of their own personal and/or any third party interests,
• contribute to the broader promotion of HDSF’s objects, aims and reputation by applying skills, expertise, knowledge and contacts, and
• ensure the charity complies with its governing document, charity law and statutory requirements. 

No previous experience of being a Trustee is required.   All new Trustees are supported through an induction programme and are expected to complete specialist training covering the role and responsibilities of trustees as part of their induction, as well as a programme of ongoing training for all Trustees.  In addition, the Charity Commission has 2 excellent guides on the role of Trustees; Essential Guide and What’s Involved. 

Person Specification 

We are currently looking for a Trustee with expertise and experience in Human Resources, as identified through our latest Trustee Skills Audit.  In addition to the key skills for a Trustee (below), the ideal candidate would have a CIPD qualification as well as a number of years’ experience in a generalist role or across a number of HR specialisms.

Uttlesford Foodbank are seeking someone with fundraising and grant applications experience at board level, ensuring that the Board of Trustees are aware of and kept up to date with any fundraising or grant developments and build a sound fundraising strategy as we move forward. This role involves leading on fundraising affairs for the food bank and ensuring that they are conducted within good practice frameworks.

Responsibilities

As a trustee you will share collective responsibility for the governance of the food bank and all decisions made by the board, ensuring the organisation is well run, fulfils its mission, is compliant with charity law and that the charity is open and accountable. It is also the responsibility of the treasurer to work in partnership with the chairperson and other trustees to ensure the financial viability and development of the organisation.

Key tasks

Trustee (Fund Raising & Grants Lead) Responsibilities:

• to work alongside the director, treasurer and the rest of the board to plan what level of funds are required to be generated to ensure the effective running of the charity
• to work alongside the trustee board to ensure that all grants are sought and written with the purpose of meeting the charity’s vision and objectives
• To lead on the organisation of local fund-raising opportunities to support the running of the charity, including incorporating national Trussell fund raising campaigns/events throughout the year to oversee, with operational management support, the writing of high-quality grant applications that are in line with the charity’s vision and objectives
• to regularly communicate to the rest of the trustee board via trustee meetings or any other communication, any relevant information and/or developments regarding fund raising or grant applications.

Other responsibilities, along with the board of trustees, include:

• to approve, support, and guide the charity’s purpose, vision, strategy, goals and objectives
• to manage the charity’s resources responsibly, including ensuring the charity’s assets are used only to carry out its purpose, avoid undue risk, and not over-commit the charity
• to ensure the effective and efficient administration of the charity, responding to changes in the local community as appropriate to ensure that key risks are identified, monitored, and controlled appropriately
• to ensure appropriate financial plans are in place, budgets are monitored, and progress is evaluated
• to review and approve financial statements
• to help promote the organisation to key stakeholders and beneficiaries
• to ensure the charity has appropriate procedures to comply with current legislation and good practice, including employment, health and safety, equity, diversity and inclusion, safeguarding, and GDPR compliance/data protection
• to prepare for and regularly attend and participate in board and subcommittee meetings and any trustee away days.

About the role:

The current Chair, Professor Steven Haberman, is approaching the end of his period of tenure and we are therefore looking for a new Chair to succeed him.

Our Chair is expected to be independent on appointment and to remain independent throughout their tenure. The primary responsibilities of the Chair are as follows:

• To promote and oversee the highest standards of governance within the Board and the London Foundation for Banking & Finance.
• To lead the Board and in particular to lead discussions on all proposals put forward by the CEO and the senior executive team.
• Together with the CEO, to set an agenda for the Board which takes full account of the issues facing the London Foundation for Banking & Finance and the concerns of Board members and:
  • is focused on strategic matters
  • is forward looking and
  • evaluates and oversees current business.
• To maintain a proper process to ensure all matters for which the Board has responsibility are considered by the Board.
• To ensure that Board members receive accurate, timely and clear information to enable them to monitor performance, make sound decisions and give appropriate advice to promote the success of the London Foundation for Banking & Finance.
• To manage Board meetings so that sufficient time is allowed for the discussion of complex or contentious issues and that all Board members' contributions are encouraged and valued.
• To chair, serve on or attend such Committees of the Board as the Board may determine.  Currently the Chair of the Board also acts as Chair of the Nomination & Remuneration Committee.
• Supported by the Nomination & Remuneration Committee, to plan governor succession.
• To encourage active engagement by all members of the Board.
• To create the conditions for overall Board and individual governor effectiveness including promotion of an appropriate induction programme for new governors, creating the opportunity for the maintenance of the relevant skills and knowledge required to fulfil the governors’ roles on the Board and its Committees and ensuring the Board undertakes a regular evaluation of its own performance, that of its Committees and that of individual trustees, including the Chair.
• To address the development needs of the Board as a whole with a view to enhancing its overall effectiveness.
• To be a sounding board and mentor to the CEO.
• If a new CEO is required, to lead the process for identifying suitable successors and to chair the Nomination & Remuneration Committee recommending a candidate or candidates to the Board.
• To represent the London Foundation for Banking & Finance with external parties where required (in addition to the CEO). In particular this is envisaged in relation to fund raising activities.

You will have:

• Worked in a previous Chair or Vice Chair role, ideally with experience in financial services, education or  technology.
• Capable of working in tandem with CEO.

Skaped is an East-London community-led Artivist organisation that encourages young people to engage with community building and social change through the creative arts. As an organisation, we run relatable creative workshops, educational programmes and art projects for 11-30-year-olds mainly from marginalised communities. Our programmes have sparked conversations surrounding societal change, decolonisation, gender equality, gentrification, migration, anti-discrimination, and the like.
