About us
Who we are
Wave is working to change attitudes around learning disability so that we see more places in the heart of communities where people with and without learning disabilities are equally valued.
We like that our work can be summed up by the two meanings of the word ‘WAVE' - a universal sign of friendship and a powerful force that can break down barriers.
We use the experience and learning gained from running inclusive worship and social groups in North London, to encourage and enable others to start similar initiatives in their communities, doing things #WithNotFor each other. We have seen how mixed-ability places help to overcome the negative attitudes and lack of confidence that can lead to social isolation.
Research conducted in 2019 shows that 61% of adults with and without learning disabilities in the UK are interested in mixing, but that the majority lack the opportunity and confidence to do this. Our WAVE in a Box resource saves others having to reinvent the wheel when looking to bridge this gap in inclusive social opportunities!
Our culture and values
WAVE was established in 2009 when a group of parents decided they wanted to ‘do something significant’ to improve the inclusion of their children and others with learning disability, who are often marginalised in community and social settings.
WAVE is founded on the belief that we are all valued equally, irrespective of our abilities.
While the background and roots of WAVE are based on the Christian faith, our over-riding ethos is one of inclusion – welcoming and working with individuals of all faiths or none.
Equality, diversity and inclusion policy
We want WAVE to reflect the diversity of society and actively welcome individuals of all backgrounds and experiences who share our commitment to inclusion.
We aim to ensure that our employees, staff, volunteers and participants feel respected and able to give their best.
Our working environment is free of bullying, harassment, victimisation and unlawful discrimination, promoting dignity and respect for all, and where individual differences and the contributions of all staff are recognised and valued.
