Specialist Behaviour Support Workers are responsible for supporting people with learning disabilities and behavioural needs to live full lives, develop skills and maintain their wellbeing.
We are looking for a specialist behavioural support worker of skilled, creative and experienced support workers to support one customer in his own home in Letchworth Garden City. Specialist Support Workers within Look Ahead are required to have either an extra dimension of experience or a higher qualification level as determined relevant for the particular post. Specialist Support Workers provide information, social inclusion and vocational opportunities to support people to recover and stay well; exercise choice and control in their care and lives; and participate on an equal footing in the community. Support is also provided to develop a model of re-enablement towards self-advocacy, self-management and empowerment, incorporating the principles and practice of recovery, co-production and peer support. This role must have an excellent value base to support the customer to build their life and develop their skills and passions as an independent person.
A full manual driving licence is required for this position.

What you'll do:
Supporting the customer to lead a full and active life and do things they enjoy, sensitively and persistently trying to new things to open new opportunities for the customer.

Supporting the customer in their sensory routine, trialling and testing new sensory experiences.
Supporting the customer to communicate their wants and needs and develop new ways of doing this, communicating with them in a person-centred way.
Supporting the customer to manage their anxieties, using Positive Behaviour Support and Autism-specific approaches.
Collating a range of behavioural data and essential paperwork to be analysed within our local management structure.
Driving the customer's (manual) vehicle to support them to go about their daily life.
Communicating with a range of other key stakeholders including social work, psychology, and commissioning teams.

About the team
We ensure that our clients are supported to gain and retain safe, decent and affordable accommodation. A stable home is a key factor in successful rehabilitation and breaking the cycle of re-offending. We work holistically with clients, alongside multiple agencies.
Nationally we aim to influence the Government and MOJ to bring about systemic change, so that people in the criminal justice system can access better housing. We also work with housing providers and local authorities to achieve change at a local level.
About the role
You will complete an Initial Needs Assessment (INA) with each client, having a detailed discussion with them to outline their situation and the support they need. A strengths-based approach is used to identify the positive attributes that they can build upon to achieve their goals and is reflected in the design of the INA. Working together with your client, you will map out and agree a set of interventions and the outcomes needed, encouraging and empowering them to actively contribute towards their goals.
You will carry a fluctuating case load of service users with varying levels of needs. The focus of the service is to support the desistance model, supporting individuals to achieve their full potential.
The position will be based in delivery locations across North Yorkshire, with other agreed locations and travel expected when needed across the National Probation Service Region.
About You
You have considerable experience of advocating for clients to agencies and authorities and have a track record of successful outcomes and challenging when needed. You can adapt complex information into practical plans and proactively manage your caseload. Motivating and encouraging your clients will be a key part of the role, as well the ability to build rapport, trust and actively listen to their needs. As you will be working closely with clients, a sound understanding of professional boundaries is crucial.

The Opportunity

The Director is a member of the Senior Leadership Team of MSI and is a member of the Technical Services Team. This role reports to the VP & Director of the Technical Services Department. Responsibilities
- Contribute to laying the foundations for a new Young Lives (YL) Research Hub on Climate Change and Environmental Shocks.
- Support the Deputy Director to deliver the YL Policy Influencing Strategy and key research-to-policy outputs across the YL programme, including key messages, policy briefs, impact case studies, blogs and other policy focused materials relating to YL research themes. Key themes include education and skills, employment, health & wellbeing and family lives, with a specific focus on the crosscutting impacts of climate change and environmental shocks, poverty and inequalities.
- Track and analyse international and national policy debates, with a specific focus on the impact of poverty, inequalities and climate change on young people in low- and middle-income (LMICs) countries, including the disproportionate effects on girls and women.
- Proactively engage and build relationships with key international policy stakeholders working on the impacts of poverty, inequalities and climate change in LMICs, including policy influencers and practitioners (e.g. governments, donors and civil society), research-to-policy networks and researchers.
- Work closely with the Deputy Director and YL Country Directors to identify opportunities to influence policy debates both internationally and in the four study countries and provide technical support in developing research-to-policy engagement plans.
- Work closely with the YL Head of Communications to ensure research findings and related policy implications are effectively disseminated for maximum impact, including through website and social media, webinars, conferences, policy events and meetings to encourage the maximum uptake and impact of Young Lives evidence. Represent Young Lives at external events and meetings where necessary.
- Provide support to the Young Lives Director and Deputy Director in the development of fundraising proposals and submission of grant applications to generate future Young Lives research income.
Selection Criteria
Essential selection criteria
- Education to Degree level in a relevant subject (e.g. social or public policy, development studies, sociology, anthropology, or economics).
- Substantial experience in a policy analysis/advocacy role within the international development arena, including experience of developing and implementing policy influencing and engagement strategies.
- Proven track record of contributing to high-quality policy-related publications, including policy briefs and blogs. Significant experience of using research evidence to engage with policy and practice.
- Broad knowledge of relevant international policy and practice debates including the cross-cutting impacts of climate change, poverty and inequalities on young people in LMICs.
- Excellent analytical skills, able to synthesise and distil key messages from a wide range of technical academic research and policy reports.
- Excellent written and oral communication skills. Ability to write quickly for publication, tailor communications to different audiences for maximum user access and impact, and experience of presenting at external events and high-profile meetings.
- Strong interpersonal and relationship-building skills. Ability to work collaboratively within a large team as well as independently, to prioritise tasks, to manage multiple demands and to work to deadlines.

What you'll do:
Undertake initial and continuous assessment of needs and potential risks and agree levels of support actions and capture outcomes in Support and Risk Management files.

Support customers to undertake all domestic tasks wherever possible, including practical assistance where they have not yet developed the skills, to ensure customers enjoy a high quality of accommodation

Oakview is a supported living project for 10 customers with mild to moderate learning disabilities. It provides a 24/7 support service, with an emphasis on choice and control for customers, enabling them to achieve greater independence, improved quality of life and integration into the wider community. Support Workers will provide support to customers to help them develop the life skills they require to meet the assessed needs of the customers of the service. This includes providing personal care, domestic duties, emotional and social support in a person centred way. Staff will work with customers to promote social inclusion and alongside other members of the team to promote independent living, encouraging customers to maximise their skills and choices.
The service is staffed 24/7 and all staff is required to cover at least one sleep in a week.
