Trustee - Role Profile
Term of office: 3 years
The Richard Whitehead Foundation exists to support disabled people to achieve their ambitions and improve their social welfare through participation in sport and physical activity.
All Trustees have joint responsibility for the following main duties:
1 - Ensure the Richard Whitehead Foundation (RWF) is carrying out its purposes for the public benefit. This means you should:
- ensure you understand RWF’s purposes as set out in its governing document;
- plan what RWF will do, and what you want it to achieve;
- be able to explain how all RWF’s activities are intended to further or support its purposes;
- understand how RWF benefits the public by carrying out its purposes.
2 - Comply with RWF’s governing document and the law. You and your co-trustees must:
- make sure that RWF complies with its governing document;
- comply with charity law requirements and other laws that apply to RWF including submitting an annual return.
3 - Act in the Richard Whitehead Foundation’s best interests. You must:
- do what you and your co-trustees (and no one else) decide will best enable RWF to carry out its purposes;
- with your co-trustees, make balanced and adequately informed decisions, thinking about the long term as well as the short term;
- avoid putting yourself in a position where your duty to your charity conflicts with your personal interests or loyalty to any other person or body;
- not receive any benefit from RWF unless it’s properly authorised and is clearly in RWF’s interests; this also includes anyone who is financially connected to you, such as a partner, dependent child or business partner.
4 - Manage RWF’s resources responsibly. You must act responsibly, reasonably and honestly. This is sometimes called the duty of prudence. Prudence is about exercising sound judgement. You and your co-trustees must:
- make sure RWF’s assets are only used to support or carry out its purposes;
- not take inappropriate risks with RWF’s assets or reputation;
- not over-commit RWF;
- take special care when investing or borrowing;
- comply with any restrictions on spending funds.
5 - Act with reasonable care and skill. As someone responsible for governing the Richard Whitehead Foundation, you:
- must use reasonable care and skill, making use of your skills and experience and taking appropriate advice when necessary;
- should give enough time, thought and energy to your role, for example by preparing for, attending and actively participating in all trustees’ meetings.
6 - Ensure the Richard Whitehead Foundation is accountable. You and your co-trustees must comply with statutory accounting and reporting requirements. You should also:
- be able to demonstrate that RWF is complying with the law, well run and effective;
- ensure appropriate accountability to members, if RWF develops a membership separate from the trustees;
- ensure accountability within RWF, particularly where you delegate responsibility for particular tasks or decisions to staff or volunteers.
Experience, Skills & Behaviours required to fulfil the role of Trustee effectively:
- Passion for social change and helping disabled people who face significant barriers.
- Awareness and passion for equality, diversity and inclusion.
- Diversity of thought and an openness to listen to fellow Trustees.
- Commitment to attend meetings, and to respond to communication between meetings. Currently the Board meetings are face to face quarterly, usually at a weekend, and with interim online committee meetings, usually in the evenings and quarterly.
- Attention to detail.
- Good communication and interpersonal skills.
- A willingness to be contacted on an ad hoc basis.
- Ability to ensure decisions are taken and followed-up.
- Good time-keeping.

At Makani, we work with refugee women through the arts to overcome trauma, fight for their rights, and to transform their lives and the world around them. Our vision is a world of freedom, dignity and equality for all displaced women and girls.
We work in Lebanon with Syrian and Palestinian refugee women, and in the UK with refugee women from all over the world. In both countries we run therapeutic arts projects including theatre and craft therapy, filmmaking and feminist embroidery. In addition, in Lebanon we also help women through economic empowerment and income generation, access to training and education, and we are responding to the humanitarian crisis with emergency support for displaced families.
Makani was founded in 2022, building upon years of work supporting Syrian and Palestinian refugee women in Lebanon by our co-founders, one of whom is a displaced woman herself. We were officially registered as a charity in June 2024.
We are a small but ambitious organisation that is already transforming the lives of over 100 refugee women and their families in Lebanon, and dozens in the UK. We have rapidly grown over the past two years, with the accompanying rapid increase in income. We are driven by our passion for a better world for marginalised refugee women.
POSITION: Treasurer
We are seeking a highly motivated and experienced Treasurer to join our Board of Trustees. The Treasurer will play a crucial role in ensuring the financial management, health and sustainability of the organisation, contributing to the strategic direction and decision-making process.
DETAILS
Location: Home-based, with occasional meetings in London.

A bit about this role
Without the passionate and committed teams of volunteers across Cats Protection we wouldn’t be able to help the thousands of cats and kittens each year that rely on us for help. Life in a rescue environment is never ideal for any cat compared to a loving home. Our Cat Adoption Team Leaders support cat homing and as part of this they may lead a team of volunteer home visitors who collectively play an important part in matching our feline friends with their new families. Our Cat Adoption Team Leaders support their team of volunteers in all aspects of their roles, making sure our volunteers are happy, confident and supported.
What can you expect to be doing?
- Acting as the main point of contact within the branch for cat adoption enquiries via email / telephone and social media
- Supporting the adoption process through either homefinder questionnaires or a small team of home visitors
- Liaising closely with other branch volunteers to ensure information on cats being helped is correct and up to date
- Following up on any post-adoption queries
- Play an active part in the branch committee, being part of the branch team leading on cat adoption information and updates
- Collaborating with the Cat Welfare Team Leader to ensure the highest standards of cat care are applied in line with Cats Protection policy and procedures

As a Group Leader at Youth Challenge Oxfordshire (YoCO), you will play a key role in guiding and supporting young people through our 18-month program. This involves leading weekly 2-hour sessions in Wantage, creating a safe and engaging environment, and driving personal development.
Responsibilities:
- Lead a 2-hour weekly session during term time, following YoCO’s unique programme: ME (self-awareness), US (group dynamics), and THEM (community & global causes).
- Foster a safe, inclusive, and fun environment, supporting the personal development of all group members.
- Plan fundraising activities alongside your group and the YoCO support team, and attend events (some may be on weekends).
- Lead the group on a 5-day UK residential trip organized by YoCO.
- Regularly update YoCO staff on the group’s progress and address any issues.
- Attend an induction with the Group Manager, complete a DBS check, and receive First Aid and Safeguarding training (funded by YoCO).
Ideal Candidate Profile:
- Passionate and Motivated: Enthusiastic about working with vulnerable young people, with a commitment to motivating and inspiring them to reach their full potential. Able to act as a positive role model and build strong, trusting relationships.
- Strong Communication: Excellent listening skills and a non-judgmental attitude.

Volunteering for Sense
Our amazing team of volunteers help us run over 100 shops across England and Wales. Every donated item that you sort, prepare and sell helps to raise vital funds to support us in our mission to make sure no one, no matter how complex their disabilities, is isolated, left out, or unable to fulfil their potential. Our shops are at the heart of local communities – sharing the work of Sense, and helping to secure support for our life changing work.
What your role will involve
There are a variety of tasks that you can get involved with in the shop, including:
- Welcoming and assisting customers, providing great customer service and a fantastic shopping experience
- Receiving donated goods from members of the public
- Sorting, steaming, tagging and preparing donated goods for sale
- Creating eye catching window and in-shop displays
- Keeping the shop floor well stocked, tidy, clean and organised
- Processing sales and serving on the till
- Promoting Gift Aid and other Sense fundraising initiatives
- Acting as an ambassador for Sense; promoting the shop and Sense in your local community
- Supporting with the recruitment and training of new volunteers
- Following new health, safety and social distancing measures to ensure the safety of everyone

This is your chance to take your practice onboard one of our Ships. As our Crew Physician, you can provide routine, general medical care for our Crew, surgical inpatient consults, referrals and more. You’ll also hold the important distinction of leading our emergency medical response team onboard.
What You Will Contribute
• Provide medical consultations and treatment for our Crew, including regular check-ups, routine health screenings, and emergency care when needed
• Support the health education to our Crew and host country partners by presenting on applicable health related topics
• Ensure the health and safety of the Crew on an ongoing basis, in collaboration with the Captain
• Work with and supervise the Hospital Physician(s) to oversee the general health of Ward patients and pre-operative patients
• Review patients in Screening, Outpatients, and Rehabilitation as the opportunity arises
• Actively maintain and improve the standards of care for our patients
• Provide medical direction and advice for the Palliative Care Team

About this role
You will be vital to the work of your local Scope shop, generating income and raising awareness of our work in your local community. You will receive all training and support you need to get involved and enjoy your time volunteering.
Your role may include:
- sorting and organising goods for sale
- helping to display stock and window dressing
- tidying and cleaning the shop
- welcoming and supporting customers
- using the till and taking payments
- steaming clothes so they look better for customers
- pricing and tagging new donations
When and where
You will be in our Scope Atherstone shop at 86 Long Street, Atherstone, Warwicks, CV9 1AT. We are flexible on the times you would like to volunteer. We’d love your help for as little as 1 hour a week, but if you can give more time that would help us even more.
Who we’re looking for
We welcome anyone who is friendly and passionate about disability equality!
Some volunteers want to learn more about charities or about retail. Others want to make a difference to the lives of disabled people. Other volunteers are interested in our training and development opportunities. Some people join us to meet new people and make friends. Sometimes people want to help a charity shop they like shopping in, while also getting a discount in the shop!

We are looking to recruit for the following roles:
• Advisers
• Information Guides/Reception Workers
We think it is important to let you know we usually ask our volunteers to commit to at least 6 – 9 months volunteering after they have been trained. The time that the training takes will depend on the role(s) you are interested in (and we have available), but on average our training programme is anything between 3 and 6 months.
So, if you can confirm that you would be available for at least 1 year and can offer at least one regular session per week, we would love to hear from you.
We will be holding Recruitment Open Days on:
• Tuesday 19th November 2pm
• Thursday 28th November 10am
These sessions will last between 1 -2 hours and will be a chance to find out more about the roles and the work of Citizens Advice. At the end of the session, you will be given the opportunity to progress by signing up for an interview.
