The overall aim of this commission is to establish an effective and well-managed staffing structure for the organisation, with strong systems and policies embedded across our teams. Ultimately this will build Deaf Unity’s stability and resilience for the long-term.
Deaf Unity: mission and purpose
Deaf Unity is a deaf-led charity (CIO), based in London, that works to empower, nurture and train deaf individuals. Our particular focus is on three main points of transition that are pivotal in enabling deaf people to realise their potential – and to thrive within and contribute fully to society. These transition points are:

We work with our community in London to identify the barriers deaf people face at every stage of this journey, empowering them to make informed choices and to succeed. We partner with stakeholders (universities, employers, voluntary sector partners) to decrease, overcome or eradicate these barriers altogether.
From our home base in London, we work alongside our community and partners to develop and deliver new initiatives in response to clearly identified needs. We directly engage 300+ deaf people each year: inspiring and supporting school-leavers to take their first steps into higher education; empowering graduates and employees to navigate the world of work with confidence; and connecting deaf people with each other to build community, tackle isolation, mobilise around key issues and break down barriers to learning and employment. Sharing and dissemination of our work (including online to reach the national community) goes on to engage far greater numbers.
Deaf Unity generates much of its income from providing interpreting and consultancy services and delivering training (British Sign Language and deaf awareness courses). This activity fully aligns with our charitable mission and generates essential unrestricted funding to support our wider activities. Income in the year ending December 2023 was £115,316, of which over 80% was generated from course delivery and interpreting services. That year we generated a surplus of £11,102.
Context for the commission
To date, deaf Unity’s programmes have been delivered entirely by a freelance team: CEO, administrator, tutors and project managers/coordinators leading on different streams of activity. We have recently recruited a Training and Operations Manager (freelance) to lead on training and interpreting services.
Activity continues to grow. Turnover in 2024 was c. £175,000 (final accounts are currently being produced), demand for courses is strong and we have had a successful year of fundraising.
Our activities engage a broad range of beneficiaries, participants and stakeholders: deaf students and employees; our local deaf community in London; and many different stakeholders – universities, employers and local councils – working with us to remove the barriers that disadvantage deaf people and prevent access to opportunity. We are proud of a track record of impactful interventions that have made a real difference in the prospects of deaf learners, jobseekers and employees.
This said, we have not reaped the full benefits of the partnerships and experience that have contributed to this success. A wholly freelance workforce means skills, knowledge, relationships and learning are regularly lost. We now wish to bring a core team into a salaried, PAYE structure to assure greater stability and continuity. We wish to invest in our people and demonstrate good employability practices, as champions of Deaf parity in the workplace. Specialist support is needed to ensure a good process, an affordable structure, and that appropriate systems, policies and structures are in place to support future work.
In late 2023, the Board of Trustees agreed a forward plan, setting out the charity’s objectives and the activities we plan to deliver over the next 3-5 years. Our work is guided by 5 high-level, strategic objectives. We aim that by 2028:
- Deaf Unity will have created in partnership with London schools a high-quality, effective careers advice pack/toolkit which can be accessed digitally by schools across the UK to inspire and support deaf learners on their FE/HE/vocational journey.

Deaf Unity will be providing a comprehensive package of support around employability, that is recognised and in use by 5 leading nationwide employers and by the National Union of Students (NUS).
- We will be hosting in London a highly respected, impactful annual event for deaf people in work that is reaching 100 deaf people each year, directly or indirectly

Deaf Unity will be able to evidence that the CIO is making a substantial positive difference in the lives of learners, students and employees - through quantitative and qualitative feedback including testimonials and case studies
- Our organisation will be stable, financially secure and resilient, supported by strong governance and management systems and effective partnership networks
This commission directly supports objective 5.
In parallel with this:
- Deaf Unity will work with an Evaluation specialist to develop a practical, effective evaluation framework and plan enabling us to capture and analyse our impact across the full range of our activities. This will enable us to improve the design and delivery of our services and activities, on an ongoing basis and to better evidence the charity’s impact and the difference we are making in people’s lives.

Staff and Trustees will undertake training to address identified skills and knowledge gaps (a modest budget is allocated for this)
This programme of development activity is kindly funded by Trust for London.
In the course of the year Deaf Unity will also be working with a corporate partner offering pro-bono support to redevelop the website and advise on online course delivery.
Overview of role
The consultant will be required to lead and support Deaf Unity’s CEO and Board through a systematic approach to agreeing, implementing and embedding the new structure. We currently envisage that this will include:

A review of the functions, skills and competencies required to deliver Deaf Unity’s forward plan

Producing a proposed, costed staff structure, with salaries, rates of pay and conditions that are benchmarked against the sector and meet good practice e.g. in terms of Living Wage parity

Business planning to include producing a revised budget for 2025 (currently indicative only) and an indicative budget for 2026, based on current levels of activity/growth, to ensure that the new structure is affordable. (An in-depth business development process is planned for a later stage, separate from this commission)

A review of governance and existing policies

Support with the transition process e.g. ensuring that the moving of any freelance staff to salaried contracts is compliant with the law and with good employment practice

Development of a training plan (spanning the Board, staff and freelance team) to address identified skills gaps
We will however welcome alternative proposals for how this work might most effectively be structured.
Schedule
We aim to start work in mid April 2025, completing by end October 2025 (7 months). The consultant will be required to work flexibly throughout this period and this will be negotiated with you on appointment, bearing in mind your other commitments.

Client mix
Candidates should be aware that at present 70% of our partner charities come from a Christian background (churches or Christian charities). While it is not a requirement to be Christian, candidates must be happy to write for a faith-based audience.
Further information
This role is home-based; however, we hold quarterly in-person team days, and you may occasionally be required to work from client sites (nationally, with a North West focus).

Overview of role
The evaluation specialist will be required to support Deaf Unity’s CEO and Training & Services Manager in developing an appropriate evaluation framework and action plan to be applied across the breadth of the charity’s activities, with supporting materials (e.g. questionnaires; interview prompts; other approaches). This is in the context of projects that often serve the deaf community, where written responses to feedback forms/online surveys are not always appropriate.
The consultant will support the leadership team to put in place training (not included in the fee) and systems to ensure that freelance teams delivering Deaf Unity’s project and training activities have the necessary understanding, guidance and confidence to support effective monitoring and evaluation of these activities.
Elements of Deaf Unity’s work to be included in this framework are:

As Senior Programme Manager you will:

THE ROLE
This is an exciting time to join The Girls’ Network as we seek to expand our work inspiring and empowering girls from the least advantaged communities. As an experienced HR professional, you will be key in ensuring that we recruit and retain great people whilst attaining best practice in our HR policies and procedures.
The People and Culture Manager will provide professional HR strength to The Girls’ Network and be responsible for training and development plans for our team. You will lead on recruitment, retention and policies and oversee and enhance the full employee lifecycle. As a small charity the role will necessarily include some basic administration activities as well as taking a strategic view.

You will oversee the recruitment and selection process for all new hires.
- Ensure consistent and appropriate Job Descriptions for all roles (working with the hiring managers)

About the role
The purpose of the Fundraising Coordinator/Small Grant Writer role is to act as administrator and coordinator for all aspects of the Fundraising team, as well as working with the Head of Fundraising to research, compose and submit small grant applications (up to £10,000) using skilled writing techniques and knowledge of the culture, programmes and language of Kids Matter.

- In conjunction with the Head of Fundraising and utilising knowledge of existing donor and grant income and potential grant opportunities, helping to plan future years’ funding pipeline strategy.

Job Purpose

The Director of Retail provides senior and strategic leadership for Habitat GB’s retail strategy, and for the entire ReStore operation. Key responsibilities include the planning, implementation, and monitoring of the impact of ReStore in Great Britain, such as income generation, brand awareness, partnership development, community engagement and outreach. The Director of Retail is also responsible for leading a high performing team to manage the ReStore footprint in Great Britain, and working collaboratively across Habitat GB, the international Habitat network (HFHI), and with external partners.
As a member of the Senior Leadership Team, the Director of Retail works to ensure the impact, sustainability, diligence and productivity of the organisation, including engaging in organisational transformation, within the framework of a robust people and culture approach.
Key Accountabilities/Responsibilities
Strategic development & leadership:
Provide senior and strategic leadership for end-to-end retail operations.
- Develop and implement a comprehensive commercial and profit-driven strategy aligned with Habitat GB’s mission and goals.
- Continue to identify and maximise the opportunities, revenue and profit presented by the commercial operations of Retail as well as volunteering, community engagement and other programmes, working in collaboration with colleagues in the Programme Delivery and Fundraising & Partnerships teams.
- Working collaboratively across Habitat GB, review the commerciality of the wider charity and develop commercial projects capable of delivering efficiencies and increasing income which create increased support for the charity’s beneficiaries.

- Coordinate property maintenance and repairs including shop renovations and fit out.

- Lead the development of a Volunteer Management programme for ReStore in line with sector-wide and Habitat for Humanity best practice. Ensure ReStore staff are supported to deliver outstanding volunteer management and build in regular feedback mechanisms.
- Working closely with the Head of People and others, support the ongoing development of a strong safeguarding culture throughout the organisation.
- Lead the development and monitoring of a safeguarding plan for all ReStore operations and programmes, including policy, protocols and training for volunteers and ReStore staff.

The Tutor Communications Officer will work closely with the Communications and Media Manager to support all aspects of stakeholder communications and engagement at Action Tutoring. We are looking for a Head of Fundraising to join our team.
The Head of Fundraising will lead our income generation strategy to ensure The Girls’ Network can continue empowering young women from the least advantaged backgrounds. This role will drive the development and stewardship of high-value partnerships, oversee strategic growth in fundraising, and contribute to the charity’s long-term sustainability.
Key roles and responsibilities
Fundraising
· Develop and implement a fundraising strategy to define and meet annual income targets from corporate partners, Trusts & Foundations, individuals and third party events, identifying opportunities for growth
· Identify, steward and secure high value relationships with corporate partners, Trusts & Foundations and major donors to achieve and exceed own targets, working with the support of the CEO, as required
· Develop compelling propositions to secure funding and wider support from corporate partners, working with the Head of Programmes and Ambassador Community Lead to ensure operational alignment
· Develop and submit funding bids for high value Trusts & Foundations in support of operational plans and agreed budgets
· Identify and steward major donors to meet future targets, working with the support of the CEO, as required
· Develop new activities to increase income from individuals e.g. proprietary campaigns, regular donors, digital fundraising and events, working with external suppliers within available budget
· Ensure regular review and update of case for support to align with external and internal developments.
· Ensure compliance with organisational policies and fundraising regulations working with Head of Finance & Operations, CEO, Trustees and external support, as required.
Leadership
· Provide strategic leadership and direction to Fundraising, ensuring the strategy aligns with our wider goals, delivering high-impact fundraising campaigns and driving long term sustainability.
· Take an active role in the Senior Leadership Team (with CEO, Head of Programmes, Head of Finance & Operations) to ensure efficient management of the charity, developing annual operational plans and budgets, monitoring performance and risk against quarterly targets and attending quarterly Board meetings.
· Work closely with the Head of Programmes to identify and assess new partnership opportunities to develop the strategy and success of the charity.
· Work closely with Head of Finance & Operations on data migration to enable effective fundraising and ensure a high quality supporter experience.
· Develop understanding of policy and issues affecting our mentees and the impact and implications for The Girls’ Network programmes and funders.
· Build productive internal and external relationships, role-modelling our values.
· Act as Ambassador for TGN.
Reporting
· Report quarterly to the CEO and Board of Trustees on KPIs (Key Performance Indicators) and KRIs (Key Risk Indicators) including progress against income targets and value of pipeline, working with the Head of Finance and Operations to align management information
· Ensure restricted grant funding information is shared with the Head of Finance and Operations to enable tracking and with the Monitoring, Evaluation Research and Learning Manager to enable programme data reporting
Staff Management
· Ensure the Fundraising team are well supported to perform their roles, meeting virtually and in person on regular basis, conducting one-to-ones, annual appraisals and personal development plans to support learning.
· Lead and support the Fundraising Manager and Partnerships Manager to achieve their targets from corporate partners and Trusts & Foundations, tracking performance through quarterly reports, including pipeline values
· Work closely with Communications Manager to ensure fundraising opportunities and campaigns are coordinated in a timely fashion to the correct audiences.
· Handle administrative duties such as recruitment, training, performance management seeking support from HR as required
· Ensure direct reports are engaged and motivated and working to a high standard
· Provide appropriate information and guidance to direct reports on a timely basis
Other duties
· As a small charity with limited resources, all staff are expected to be flexible with their work and as such you may be required to undertake other duties and tasks as assigned from time to time.

Essential
Fundraising expertise
· Significant experience (5+ years) gained in senior fundraising and within the not for profit sector
· Significant experience in developing effective fundraising and communications strategies to meet organisational goals, leading teams to achieve success
· Proven experience overseeing a Trusts & Foundations programme, including pipeline and prospect management to meet multi-year targets
· Excellent written skills with the ability to produce a concise, compelling and creative case for support
· Financial analysis skills to track and report on quarterly income performance
Relationship Management
· Demonstrable experience of developing compelling funding propositions to secure high value partnerships with corporates and Trusts & Foundations
· Ability to develop productive relationships with colleagues, donors, suppliers, media contacts and Board-level decision makers
Leadership
· An aptitude for working with high degree of autonomy, managing multiple priorities and within the resource limitations of a small organisation
· An ambition to achieve the vision and mission of The Girls' Network and commitment to the principles of equality, diversity and inclusion
· Proven experience in developing fundraising content to meet communications objectives
Desirable
· Experience of major donor stewardship to secure gifts

About Bond and the role
Bond is the UK network for organisations working in international development. We unite and support a diverse network of over 365 civil society organisations to help eradicate global poverty, inequality and injustice. We strengthen and champion the sector to make international development more efficient and effective. We work to influence governments and policy-makers, develop the skills of people in the sector, share expertise, and build organisational capacity and partnerships. Bond gets nearly half its income from restricted funding, so it is critical part of becoming a financially resilient organisation with a diverse income portfolio, able to adapt to external cost pressures and having scope to invest in the work it wants to do.As our members shrink their UK presence, Bond’s membership income is reducing accordingly, and so we need to increase our access to restricted fundraising to compensate and allow us to continue to deliver our strategy.
Bond has strengths and weaknesses when it comes to fundraising. Our strength is our unique place in the UK sector, our structured relationships with the UK government and our key role in global networks, including around key processes such as the G7 and G20. Our main selling point for funders is that an investment in Bond can reach our 365 members, the UK government and the key global institutions in which it plays a key role. We have also demonstrated thought leadership on key issues, including anti-racism, economic justice, sector transformation, civic space, decolonization and development finance. We have access to unrestricted funding from our members, and funding from the FCDO, which can be used to co-finance other initiatives. Our weakness is that, as a UK based network, we cannot easily demonstrate the kind of ‘on the ground’ impacts that other organisations can, and we risk being deprioritized by UK funders who want to fund UK work, and those interested in work in LMICs who (rightly) want to prioritise spending in those countries. We are also rightly focused on our member priorities and positioning, which can limit access to some funding streams, as we are clear that we will only work on areas that are of sufficient priority for our members.
Moreover, many of the key trusts and foundations that Bond is targeting rely on relationship building and networking rather than a formal application process. We need to build up our profile and relationships with these funders, especially those in the US.
We are looking for a part-time fundraising director, to work on a consultancy basis, to support us in securing the next phase of these large grants and helping us to identify and engage with other funders to diversify our funding sources. This role combines coordination with building strong relationships and supporting Bond managers and leaders to secure our funding into the future. The person will lead an informal team of staff drawn from across the organisation (which meets fortnightly) and work closely with the CEO and Directors to establish and maintain relationships with key donors. They will also play a key role in upskilling and developing staff capacity to fundraise within Bond and coordinating our efforts.
We have done a significant amount of groundwork and initial scoping of trusts and foundations over 24/25, so this new director’s role will be to help us in opening doors and building relationships with priority funders. The director will also help to support the CEO, Senior Management Team and our managers to identify and build relationships with funders, strengthen networks and sharpen up our pitch. The director will also provide strategic advice and guidance to the SMT as to how we might strengthen our work areas to better attract additional funding, building on some consultancy on our finance model that is currently ongoing.
The ideal candidate will have a track record in fundraising from major donors and a strong interest in and understanding of the international development sector and the role of networks within that sector. They will have significant existing relationships and networks amongst the major donors likely to fund Bond’s work. They will be excellent at bringing teams together to submit bids, overseeing active funder management and finding the best relationships from which to secure funds.
Main purpose of the job
The main purpose of the job is to support Bond to secure the next phase of Bond’s large grants and to identify and engage with new and existing funders to diversify our funding sources.
Main responsibilities
We envisage that this role will deliver:
- Lead our overall approach with donors and ensure key relationships are nurtured (through the SMT and key managers).
- Build and manage relationships with key funders and sure introductions are made to relevant Bond staff members. Monitor trends in key donor agencies (new leadership, new strategies etc) and ensure that Bond staff can make the most of these opportunities.
- Work with the SMT and extended management team (EMT) to create and sustain a culture of fundraising within Bond
- Provide high level, strategic advice to Bond staff as to entry points and pitches with particular donors.
- Identify key external events at which Bond leaders can present our work and build profile and relationships with donors, and prepare Bond staff as appropriate.
- Proactively seek-out and identify new fundraising trends and developments, and make recommendations to Bond based on this
- Provide us with advice on how to best package our work to attract specific funders, while ensuring that we are able to continue to respond to member demand and our obligations and positioning with existing donors.
- Support and coordinate the preparation and submission of bids, expressions of interest and concept notes as appropriate, supporting our expert teams to present their work and plans in the most compelling way.
- Train and coach the Bond team ahead of key funder meetings and presentations.
- Write and deliver the fundraising strategy for 2025/6, including identifying new potential income streams and producing new strategies to access these funds.
- Monitor and deliver annual income targets
- Provide the CEO and SMT with advice on how we can best adapt our approach and ways of working to build up a more diversified funding base.
- Attend meetings with funders and prospects, and networking events to uncover new opportunities for fundraising
- Ensure Bond’s prosect list is kept up to date and prepare fundraising pipeline reports for relevant board meetings.
The role will be supported by a number of staff who have fundraising as a small part of their roles, including the CEO, Head of Finance, Operations and Performance, SMT and the Extended Management Team (EMT).

- A solid track record in leading significant successful fundraising efforts from trusts and foundations and major donors.
- Significant network of contacts within the major trusts and foundations likely to fund Bond’s work, including those in the US.
