Social Welfare Volunteer Roles

Could you use your digital marketing and social media skills to help a local London-based recovery service to increase their social media presence and reach?

Lewisham Primary Care Recovery Service (PCRS) provides a drug and alcohol treatment recovery-orientated service, offering medication assisted treatment alongside psychosocial interventions for people living in Lewisham.

Humankind has national social media accounts, but we would love to involve a volunteer to help increase PCRS’s local social media presence and engagement, generate content and also to help promote existing activities.  We can provide insight and experience in the field of social media marketing for a charity, and support you in your own goals.

Please note:  This role is designed so that is can be undertaken remotely, but the volunteer would still need to be based in the UK.  Humankind is unfortunately not able to offer visa sponsorships.

Details of the role:

Engage with staff, service users and volunteers to gather content, quotes and stories to be shared on social media.  This could involve attending online group sessions or meetings, following nationwide Humankind accounts to share relevant content on local platforms, and researching relevant local organisations / networks / initiatives.

• Support with the design of this content, using templates and brand guidelines.
• Help to promote the activities of the service
• Help create a social media plan with support from staff
• Adhere to data protection, safeguarding, social media policies, media consent and brand guidelines
• Have regular catch-ups with a supervising member of staff to evaluate progress

Practical Considerations:

This role can be undertaken remotely and with flexible timings, but it would be ideal if you were able to attend an online meeting fortnightly during 9-5 hours to discuss and plan with the supervisor for this role.
Please note, we'd need to check with you that you can access the internet /have enough mobile data if Volunteering remotely, as we want to ensure no one is out of pocket from volunteering.  We will have a Humankind laptop available for this role.

Personal qualities / Experience:

• Experience using social media platforms to increase engagement, and generating content
• An interest in / willingness to learn about recovery and substance misuse services
• Excellent verbal/written communication skills
• An understanding of the importance of guidelines and procedures relating to key areas such as safeguarding and information governance.
• Respectful and non-judgemental towards service users and team
• Able to commit to volunteering regularly (though flexible when that would be)

BRANCH TRUSTEE – MARKETING AND SOCIAL MEDIA

Branch Trustee (Preston & District reg Charity No 232256)

This is an exciting opportunity to be a hands-on trustee at branch level, helping to promote kindness and prevent animal cruelty, reach out to more supporters, and influence how we do things. 

With your expertise and support we will achieve so much! 

We need volunteers who have expertise in Marketing and Social Media to help us maximise our revenue and increase engagement.

You will get new skills and experience whilst enabling us to help more animals. 

Overview of the Branch Trustee opportunity

We are looking for an enthusiastic and passionate person, with a background in marketing and social media, who could devote their time to volunteer as a trustee for our RSPCA Preston & District Branch and support us in boosting our campaigns online. 

Alongside passing on your expertise, this opportunity will give you the chance to influence how we care for and prevent cruelty to animals and drive the implementation of key initiatives. You will serve on the governing body of the charity and be instrumental, alongside fellow trustees, in the running of the Branch and setting out both the short and long term aims.

As a minimum, trustees would normally be expected to attend a bi-monthly committee meeting lasting around 2 to 3 hours (virtual meetings are an option). However, the commitment may vary depending on your availability,  and if  you decide to take on additional duties.

Trustee do not need to live within the branch boundaries but occasional travel to Branch sites may be required from time to time.

About the RSPCA Preston & District Branch

Over 80% of the animal welfare work of the RSPCA is carried out through local Branches which are run by staff and volunteers, supported by the RSPCA National Society.

Preston & District Branch has been affiliated with the National RSPCA for 150 years!

A separately registered charity looking after animals in the local area and engaging with the local community. 

Our mission is to seek out safe homes for abandoned, neglected or abused animals who are  nursed back to health, rehabilitated and found forever loving homes.

Preston & District Branch is part of a network of 140  branches, and 1 of only 8 in the North of England with an animal centre. 

The rehoming centre is within the Preston area (close to JCN 31 of the M6). 

RSPCA Preston & District Branch is a well established Branch with approximately 20 members of staff and 75 volunteers across 4 locations and raises all its funds locally through supporters and other income streams.

To continue helping animals in need the Branch also operates 3 charity shops in Longridge, Chorley and Penwortham (within our specified branch area) which bring in a regular income to keep our animal centre open. 

Primary responsibilities of the Branch Trustee – Marketing and Social Media

• Take the lead in assisting the Branch to generate and develop social media strategies to maximise the promotion of animal welfare, rehoming campaigns, fundraising opportunities, and engagement with local supporters.
• Support the Branch in using social media effectively and working within the social media strategy. 
• Support the Branch in ensuring any social media or marketing content is in line with RSPCA brand guidelines. 
• Responsible for feeding back key insights and performance markers to the rest of the committee at board meetings. 
• Support the Branch in promoting animal welfare campaigns and events using various digital media platforms.

Core Branch Trustee responsibilities

• Appreciate and support the aims and policies of the RSPCA.
• Work in conjunction with fellow trustees and branch officers and jointly act in making decisions for the best interest of the branch and the RSPCA. 
• Work with national RSPCA staff to ensure that the branch meets all minimum animal welfare standards (MAWS).
• In conjunction with your fellow trustees and Branch Partnership Manager write, adopt, monitor, and review a development plan setting out the short and long term aims of your branch.
• Actively participate in branch committee meetings and to attend the branch annual general meeting and regional conference.
• Be aware of the outcome of regional board meetings and support regional initiatives.
• Actively promote and advertise the society in an ongoing programme to recruit new branch trustees and volunteers and welcome new members.
• In conjunction with your fellow trustees, ensure the proper management and control of all activities and decisions relating to any premises held or staff employed by the branch if applicable.

What we are looking for in a volunteer:

• Ideally you would have some level of knowledge in the following areas- finance, legal, fundraising, project management, business experience, awareness of employment and/or charity legislation. These all can be useful to help ensure we have a sound and robust business model and long term strategic development plan, however, they are not essential.
• We are looking for people who are creative, innovative, who have experience of or are part of groups and communities we want to attract, who can bring new ideas, different experiences and fresh perspectives to the board and to help put those ideas into action. 
• We are committed to creating a Board which is representative of our society and in particular, our community and surrounding areas so encourage people from any background to apply for any of our opportunities.
• Ultimately we are looking for someone who is committed to the RSPCA’s charitable objectives and shares our passion for animal welfare. 
• You will need to be able to work with people and have good interpersonal skills. You do not need to be an expert although commitment, common sense, and the ability to be objective are vital.

What is the purpose of this role?

 The Information & Advice (ISA) Service aims to provide advice on a range of subjects relevant to the needs of older people and to those who are caring for older friends, partners, and relatives.  The service operates through the City and County of Nottinghamshire. Currently the advice we offer is provided over the telephone, face-to-face office appointments and home visits.

The role of the Volunteer Benefits Advisor is to complete a Welfare Benefits Check with clients and provide advice on potential benefits entitlements, and supporting older clients with long-term health conditions or disabilities to complete applications forms which could include new claims, upgrade, or renew claims for the following: Attendance Allowance, Personal Independence Payment, Disability Living Allowance, Carers Allowance, Blue Badge, Council Tax Support and Housing Benefit.

What impact does the role have?

This role provides vital support in helping ensure that people in later life are able to meet the extra costs involved in living with a long-term health condition or disability by claiming the benefits they are entitled to.

What activities might you be involved in?

• Providing Welfare Benefits Checks and Welfare Benefits advice, within the boundaries laid out by the Service Coordinator, by telephone or face to face office or home visits.
• Identifying signposting opportunities to further support service user.
• Assisting the Coordinator in meeting targets of the Service e.g. providing extra information about service users’ needs for case studies, funding monitoring etc.
• Attending workshops, training, or events relevant to your role.
• Recording accurate case notes on our secure electronic database – this can be from our office or from a home computer with an Internet connection.
• Using an online benefits calculator tool to complete welfare benefits checks
• Volunteering in line with the Charity’s policies and procedures and adhering to the Volunteer Code of Conduct

What are we looking for?

Essential

· A genuine interest in the wellbeing of older people and a calm, sensitive approach to providing advice to older people, their family, and carers.

· Ability to think holistically to best meet clients’ needs and referring for follow up by the Volunteer Coordinator.

· Ability to treat customers with sensitivity and confidentiality.

• Previous experience of providing advice about benefit options.

· IT literacy and a willingness to input own client case notes on to the Charity’s database, together with recording of the appropriate individual client consents.

· Ability to work to deadlines.

· Willing to attend one to one’s support sessions, benefits training and volunteer meetings.

· Willing to volunteer within the guidelines of Age UK Notts’ Volunteering policy and adhere to the Volunteer Code of Conduct.                                   

Desirable (any of the following):

• Previous experience of working with older people.
• Previous experience of either working or volunteering in an advice role at CAB, Welfare Rights, Housing association or similar or to have worked in an advisory role for a statutory agency including DWP, Housing and Council Tax department, Adult Social Care department or a Housing Association.
• A sound knowledge of health and welfare benefits and claims processes (inc. Attendance Allowance, Disability Living Allowance, PIP) and ideally, experience of providing welfare benefits checks.
• Ability to accurately complete detailed forms.
• Ability to record information for reporting purposes, including writing case studies where applicable.
• Ability to work alone and using own initiative.

When would you be needed to volunteer?

The needs of the role and your availability (including days and times) can be discussed at interview.  Ideally, we would like you to be available for a minimum of 3 hours each week.

You will be given all the training you need to enable you to carry out your role which will include a thorough departmental induction.

You will help enrich the lives of people we support by becoming a part of this friendly charity known for providing high-quality support to people as recognised by our recent “Outstanding” CQC award. This is a voluntary post and would be offered subject to satisfactory references and DBS check. Voluntary, with travel and other reasonable expenses payable.

You will be joining an enthusiastic and committed team of trustees. Induction and training for the role will be provided. The appointment will run for three years and be subject to an annual review with the Chair of the Board. Two further terms of three years may be agreed upon. You will be required to sign a confidentiality agreement, declare any relevant business interests and complete an insolvency check as well as a charity-related parties register prior to your first Board meeting. You will be required to declare, on an ongoing basis, any further relevant business interests and/or conflicts of interest that may arise.

Across the UK, many cats are cared for by volunteer fosterers who provide a stable, safe and loving environment in their homes or in purpose-built pens in their gardens. They provide vital hands-on care and accommodation to stray or abandoned cats or cats whose owners could sadly no longer keep them, and are part of a dedicated team of volunteers committed to finding new homes for cats in need. Our fosterers carry out this role with support from their local branch or centre.

Most of our fosterers care for one or two cats at a time and enjoy providing lots of TLC to those cats, who have been pre-loved or have had a difficult start in life. Some of our fosterers look after new mums and kittens and provide round-the-clock care to newborns to give them the best start in life.

Time expectation

Our volunteer fosterers usually spend one and a half hours per day on average (around 10 to 13 hours per week) in this role, but this might vary depending on the number of cats or kittens in care. In order to help you feel confident in your fosterer role we ask that prior to looking after your first foster cat you complete some online cat welfare learning modules.

At Cats Protection we believe our volunteers should be happy and confident in their roles. We provide support and guidance from our National Cat Centre and through our regional and local volunteer groups and teams. We offer engaging online and face-to-face training, expenses and have policies and processes to help volunteers get the most out of their time with us.

You will be working directly with THL UK staff members who will steward and support you throughout your time with us. You will also have access to exclusive training opportunities to further your animal advocacy development, as well as a full onboarding process to get you started.

Our team is based all over the UK, so we’re set up to provide you with a great experience no matter where you’re based. We cover expenses to join us at in-person events, so you can be based anywhere and still get involved. No prior experience is required, we’ll give you everything you need. There is no set time commitment, but roughly 2-4 hours a month is average for this role, depending on how much you choose to get involved with.

We are recruiting three new trustees to help steer our organisation through its next chapter of growth. As board members, IRMO trustees play a vital role in supporting our organisation to broaden its reach and impact, bringing valuable and varied expertise to the table.

Our mission is to enable the development, agency, and participation of all Latin Americans and other Spanish and Portuguese speakers, by responding to both immediate needs and structural inequalities. 

We do this by offering high-quality information and advice services, opportunities for development and training, and a platform to seek social and systemic change. Our work is organized across three main operational areas—Advice and Casework, education, Training and Employment, and children and Young People—and a crosscutting area: Advocacy, Research, and Campaigning.

With 40 years of experience, we support over 4,000 people every year. 

Being a Trustee

IRMO’s Board of Trustees is made up of six to nine Trustees, who work together to ensure the charity is run properly. As a trustee, you will have the opportunity to support IRMO’s strategic development and oversee its finances. Trustees meet every two months (usually online in the evening) and are asked to commit an additional eight to ten hours between meetings to follow up on actions and provide advice and input on strategic documents and areas of work relevant to their areas of expertise.

General Responsibilities

• Stay up to date with and assess the political, economic and social contexts that affect IRMO’s work
• Support the development of and approve IRMO’s key strategic documents
• Annually review and approve IRMO’s budget
• Review, update and approve major policies
• Approve salaries, benefits, terms and conditions for staff
• Ensure that IRMO’s financial structure is adequate for its current needs and long-term strategy
• Ensure that the organisation has the necessary resources in place to meet its long-term goals
• Ensure that the Board of Trustees is adequately informed of the condition of the organisation and its operations
• Ensure that published reports adequately reflect the nature of the services and the financial condition of the organisation
• Approve major actions of the organisation, such as capital expenditure over authorised limits and major changes in activities and services 
• Review staff results in relation to IRMO’s aims and objectives, as well as annual and long-term goals
• Appoint, supervise, support, and appraise IRMO’s Director
• Provide candid and constructive criticism, advice, comments and praise
• Ensure that the Director has established appropriate policies to define and identify conflicts of interest throughout the organisation and are administering and enforcing those policies
• Appoint independent examiners/auditors subject to approval by members
• Ensure compliance with relevant legislation affecting the organisation
• Annually review the performance of the Board of Trustees and take steps to improve its performance

Best Foot Forward provides a series of free, accessible, guided health walks around open spaces in Nottingham. Walks are designed to encourage a healthy lifestyle through exercise and social interaction. The walks offer the opportunity to improve health, make new friends, have fun and get to know your local environment. This volunteer role offers you the chance to make a difference to an older person's life, and ensure your volunteering experience is a fulfilling and positive one.

Tasks you may be involved with include the following:

• Giving a brief talk before the walk to make sure everyone is prepared, and welcoming new walkers
• Leading and managing walks, usually jointly with other walk leaders (including ‘back marking or middle marking’ as well as leading at the front.
• Making sure walks are welcoming, friendly, enjoyable and safe
• Trouble shooting and dealing with problems on walks, with the support of your scheme coordinator
• Providing information about other Age UK Notts services and other walks offered by the scheme, and basic information about how to keep active
• Making sure paperwork such as registration forms and registers are completed

Skills and interests required are:

• Friendly, welcoming and empowering with good communication skills
• Knowlegdeable about the basics of the benefits of walking and physical activity
• Reliable, punctual and well-organised
• Ability to volunteer independently but with guidance and support
• Confident at speaking in front of small groups and able to take control and be assertive when needed
• Able to provide basic paperwork punctually and accuate

We are looking for volunteers who have availability to support our walks across Nottingham and Nottinghamshire which are held every day except for a Thursday 

We are looking for volunteers who can support a minimum of one walk per week, every week (time and days tbc)
