Job Purpose

Working closely with the Chair of the Board of Trustees, the Chief Executive will provide leadership and operation direction to Age Concern Luton, Working with the Senior Management Team (SMT) they will be responsible for developing and implementing the agreed strategy and achieving the business plans of the organisation, by effectively managing and developing the resources available to the organisation.  They will represent the organisation externally by promoting its services and values.

 

Main Duties and Responsibilities

Strategic Leadership

• Work with the Board in developing a strategy for the organisation.
• Lead and develop a welcoming environment which reflects an inclusive organisation that values diversity and embeds equal opportunity for all stakeholders.
• Provide strategic leadership and direction in collaboration with the SMT, ensuring strategic plans and policies are developed and implemented to facilitate the achievement of the organisation’s business plans and objectives.
• Develop and maintain business plans with clearly identified key performance indicators and outcomes.
• Review service needs on an on-going basis and ensure that the organisation is well placed to respond and deliver services as required.
• Research, develop and maintain partnerships with external stakeholders.
• Represent the organisation in key forums and promote the organisation’s work in the wider community, acting as a spokesperson, as appropriate.
• Ensure that effective infrastructure, support services and risk management is in place for all aspects of the organisation’s service delivery and activity.
• Contribute to and oversee the implementation of the fundraising plan, including identifying new funding streams, working on funding bids and ensuring funding reports are completed.

Enabling Governance

• Serve the Board and subcommittee meetings, in liaison with the Chair of Trustees, and advise the Board on matters of policy, strategy, legal, financial, staffing and procedural matters.
• Responsible for managing risks and keeping the Board informed and escalating to the Chair of the Board.
• Ensure that the decisions made, and policies approved by the Board are implemented within the organisation.
• Responsible for keeping the Board of Trustees up to date with accurate information to enable them to make decisions about the organisation.
• Build a collaborative working partnership with the Chair, and enable communication and collaboration between Board members, staff, volunteers and stakeholders.
• Have oversight of health and safety within the organisation.

Financial and Legal Management

• Ensure, with the SMT, that all legal and statutory requirements are met.
• Develop and gain approval for the Business Plan.
• Work with the Finance Manager and Treasurer to ensure budget setting and finance systems provide effective oversight and reporting of finances and budget to the Board of Trustees and the funders.

People Management

• Line manage, coach and empower, set objectives and hold to account the SMT to effectively deliver their roles and objectives and be role models within the organisation.
• Enable a working environment in which staff and volunteers achieve role satisfaction and which encourages personal/professional development.
• Maintain an organisational culture that fosters communication and collaborative working relationships across the organisation, with stakeholders and the wider community.
• Ensure that the staffing structures and resources meet the changing needs of the organisation, developing succession planning strategies for key roles.
• Manage internal organisational, employee and procedural processes, ensuring these are up to date and serving the organisational goals and aims.

 

General Responsibilities

• To network within the social sector to inform of developments and emerging best practice.
• To undertake continuous professional development / professional training / learning opportunities in line with the needs of the post and resources available.
• To be familiar with and uphold all organisational policies and procedures including Health and Safety and Equal Opportunities.
• To undertake other tasks and duties as appropriate following consultation with the Chair of the Board of Trustees.

About the role

We are looking to grow the capacity of our church leadership to support church growth, as we both develop our base within the new Osney Mead Innovation Quarter and expand our activities across the city.

We see Operations as a key ministry in the life of the church. Our existing church Admin Team covers events, communications, volunteer coordination, data handling and safeguarding administration, whilst management roles have generally been held by pastoral staff. The Operations Leader will work with our senior leaders to build and run systems that support church growth, and will be responsible for:

The Head of Development and Impact will be our lead fundraiser, drawing in support and expertise from across the team. They will take ownership of identifying funding sources, creating a strategy, forecasting our fundraising income, and building strong relationships with donors, bringing the experiences of our group members to life in fundraising communications. They will line management a full-time fundraiser who specialises in individual giving while the Head of Developent, Operations and Impact will lead on grant writing.

Salary: £43,000 - £46,000 p/a

The role: 

The Head of Development, Operations and Impact is required to lead a wide range of activities. You will be expected to manage your own time, prioritising tasks and leading a small team of people who contribute to CARAS’ fundraising. You will inherit excellent systems and skilled, supportive and enthusiastic team players. You will work closely with the CEO, and the senior leadership team which draws together Heads of Service from each of our programme areas. You will collaborate with our Finance Manager to ensure smooth management of grants and donations, and will play a key role in budget setting with the Finance Manager and CEO. 

The role demands cross-departmental working, and regular contact with community members to enhance your ability to advocate for them. You will be at the forefront of developing new ideas and approaches, and ensuring that teams have the money and resources to have an impact. 

Key tasks and activities. 

General 

• Lead the Operations department, line-managing team members in fundraising and operations management.

• Secure diverse and sustainable income streams to secure the future of CARAS. 

• Be the main point of contact for grant-makers and donors, communicating clearly and effectively about our work and its impacts. 

• Participate in organisational strategic reviews, making decisions on how to prioritise where limited resources are focused across the different activities and projects. 

• Carry out other duties as necessary and commensurate with the role. 

Fundraising 

• Line-manage our Fundraising Officer and work together to generate income to meet CARAS’s budgetary targets through trusts and foundations, individual giving, community fundraising and other means at our disposal. 

• Develop and deliver a fundraising strategy which synchronises with the CARAS Strategic Plan.

• Maintain a real-time pipeline of fundraising opportunities and oversee delivery. Lead or allocate all income generation opportunities in good time so that appropriate co-design and decision-making processes are behind applications. 

• Ensure compliance with best practice in fundraising including use of data and confidentiality. 

• Work collaboratively with Heads of Service and CARAS’ Finance Manager to develop, deliver and iterate systems to ensure grants are accurately and effectively managed. 

• Lead on the development of programmatic and core budgets for diverse grant funders. 

• Identify and build corporate partnerships based on organisational needs, values and income targets. 

Operations  

• Line-manage our Operations Manager and work together to ensure our premises, IT infrastructure, data management and risk management systems are effective, efficient, and legally compliant.

• Oversee or directly manage service providers and ensure that all contractors represent value for money and are appointed in line with our policies. 

• Maintain and develop strong, effective partnerships with delivery stakeholders such as our landlords, Wandsworth Council officers etc.

• Support the team to monitor projects from start to finish, including preparing costing for applications/bids, agreeing contracts and grant terms, monitoring deliverables and finance, and co-ordinating timely reporting. 

Finance 

• Work collaboratively with the Finance Manager to ensure the rigorous financial management across all income and expenditure to ensure all grants and donations are accurately accounted for and spent. 

• Working collaboratively with the Finance Manager and CEO, develop the organisational annual budget and lead on income projections for the year ahead to ensure expenditure budgets are feasible and unlock multi-year growth. 

Monitoring, evaluation and impact 

• Leading CARAS’ annual outcomes evaluation, managing work across departments to collect, disaggregate and analyse outcomes data from our Learning, Casework and Social Programmes. 

• Develop CARAS’ outcomes report and donor report ensuring they are data rich and clearly demonstrate impact. 

• Monitoring the wealth of data CARAS collects through our frontline service to ensure we stay agile and adaptable within a changing policy context, supporting Heads of Service and other relevant stakeholders to deliver excellence. 

Governance 

• Contribute to the maintenance of up-to-date policies relevant to the role.

• Attend board meetings as requested to share reports with the Board on fundraising.

• Work closely with the Treasurer and the Finance Committee on fundraising strategy.

Person Specification 

Essential  

Direct experience of the following: 

Proven experience in a leadership role. 

Proven experience of fundraising or business development successfully raising income from a range of sources.

Outstanding written communication with demonstrable experience of creating compelling cases for support and experience of successfully securing funds from large foundations.

• Oversee the finance operation, to include, statutory accounts and tax returns, quarterly management accounts, financial planning, and budgeting

Ambitious Impact (AIM) is a growing nonprofit organisation running training and incubation programs aimed at establishing and supporting a flourishing high-impact, effectiveness-focused philanthropic ecosystem, with a lively community office in East London.

We are looking for a talented Communication and Marketing Manager to join our Recruitment team to increase the quality of AIM’s communication, and our identification of exceptional talent to join our high-impact training programs. In this role, you will create, execute, and evaluate multi-channel marketing and communications strategies and continuously evaluate and improve them for the next iteration.

ABOUT THE ROLE

The Recruitment team currently consists of ~three FTE and fulfils the two key functions of attracting and selecting top candidates for our Charity Entrepreneurship incubation program  - as well as possible support for other programs AIM runs or may run. As such, there are two 3-4 month sprints each year that are very execution focused for identifying and then selecting top candidates. The recruitment team also carries out broader communications work for AIM, such as by supporting AIM’s Impactful Grantmaking Program, on outreach for staff roles at AIM, and helping our incubated charities with their initial communications.

As Communication and Marketing Manager, you will chiefly be responsible for the attracting function on the team, presenting AIM’s work in a consistently high fidelity, compelling, and engaging manner. You’ll bring a strong focus on implementation, efficiency, and strategic improvement to help us maximise the value of AIM’s communication efforts.

The role could be more junior or more senior depending on the successful candidate: A more experienced hire will take more of a lead on designing the strategy they will execute, while a more junior hire will focus more on contributing to and learning strategic planning for the tasks they will execute at first.

SPECIFIC RESPONSIBILITIES

(The exact % split may change based on updates to AIM’s strategy and the number of programs we are running.)

Executing Marketing & Communications Activities - 40%

• Implementing and (co-)designing integrated multi-channel marketing campaigns across digital, traditional, and in-person channels (such as our website, newsletter, LinkedIn, job boards, and conferences)

• Identifying and persuading top talent to apply for our programs through 1:1 engagement - such as through LinkedIn, email, and online calls 

• Soliciting and collating referrals for potential top applicants to our programs, especially from members of our community and affiliated organisations

• Managing communication with candidates before, during, and after the application phase, handling special cases and queries about our processes

• Ensuring target audience-adjusted, brand-consistent messaging and positioning in all our communications materials, adapting to diverse international target audiences and backgrounds where useful

• Ruthlessly prioritising the activities with the highest ROI

• Potentially attending conferences and other professional events to represent AIM, conducting talks, workshops, and 1 on 1 meetings

Evaluation and Systems Improvement - 30%

• Performance tracking and reporting: Set up and improve systems for collecting data on the cost-effectiveness of different communication methods for finding high-quality applicants to our programs

• Use available data to identify areas for increased efficiency and effectiveness in the communication of our work

• Identify and implement opportunities for automation

• Testing potential new communication avenues, such as digital advertising or pitching articles to major publications

Communication Asset Management and Development - 20%

• Manage communications content and assets: Create and improve materials for AIM, such as our websites, newsletter, blog, photos, and video content from our programs

• Write and edit copy across the spectrum of our communications assets

• Take up ad hoc asset-focused tasks for other departments, such as copy editing research reports for the research team, capturing footage of the in-person weeks of our programs, and providing initial design support for new charities we incubate

Planning Marketing & Communications Strategy - 10%

• Co-designing our marketing and communications strategy on the basis of collected data

• Working with our Senior Selection Manager Bret on aligning our marketing efforts with our selection processes and optimising both for successful applications

• Refining our marketing models from initial exposure to application, improving existing steps and identifying new high-potential opportunities

• Market research and analysis: Updating internal models of our target audiences and identify the best ways to reach them

Future growth trajectories for excelling hires could look like:

• Taking more, up to full responsibility for the entire attracting function of the Recruitment team

• Learning more about the selection function of the Recruitment team and splitting the role into combining work on the attraction and selection functions

• Leaning into a less executing-focused and more people management-focused position as Director of Recruitment as we will most likely hire or internally promote someone to this position in mid-2025

ABOUT YOU

This role will likely suit early-stage and mid-level communications/marketing generalists or specialists (0-5 years of experience) and could be tweaked significantly in responsibility to suit a senior communications/marketing specialist. At minimum, you should already be able to execute high-quality work across a range of communications tasks, combining some existing skills with an excitement to grow in new areas and contexts which may be less familiar. You will likely consider yourself as a communications-focused generalist to some degree, able to quickly learn and improve at tasks you have little or no previous experience with.

APPLICATION PROCESS

Our application processes aim to be highly predictive, time-effective, and informative for you. Our process consists only of stages that our best evidence suggests are predictive of success on the job (such as test tasks) rather than more common but less predictive stages (such as cover letters). We only invite candidates to the next stage if we think they have a good chance of passing it, and take care to choose tasks and interview questions that will also give you a good sense of the role and our culture.

Applicants will be asked to complete the following stages:
