Join us as a Senior Research and Evaluation Officer within the Research and Evidence team and play your part in leading progress that makes a real difference to the lives of babies, children and young people.
What kind of research does the NSPCC Research and Evidence team do?
The NSPCC Research and Evidence team carries out, commissions and partners on high quality social research. We seek to answer big and small questions around preventing and stopping child abuse, and how to support children who have experienced it.
- Our research is child-centred, meaningful and useful - it drives improvements to our work with children, families and communities, influences the development of policy and guidance, and contributes to new NSPCC campaigns, as well as adding to the wider evidence base.
- We also support research activity at NSPCC via our Research Advice Clinic, Evidence Summary Service, and the NSPCC Research Ethics Committee.
What will the job involve?
This is an exciting and varied role for a researcher with excellent project management skills. You'll be working with colleagues in departments across the NSPCC including Childline, Policy and Public Affairs, Knowledge and Information, Schools services and Participation. Current projects we're working on include research on technology assisted online sexual extortion, sex and relationships education at secondary and primary levels, problematic sexual behaviour and provision of services to tackle loneliness, to name just a few.
Specifically, the role will involve:
- Designing and project managing research on a wide range of NSPCC research projects.
- Liaising with internal and external stakeholders to develop research projects and advising other teams in the NSPCC about how to carry out robust and ethical research.
- Communicating research findings to a range of different audiences including colleagues, practitioners, decision makers, policy makers, academics and the children and families who access our services.
- Managing junior members of the team directly and via our matrix management structure.
What experience are we looking for?
You will have demonstrable experience of undertaking and managing complex research and evaluation projects in different settings and contexts. You will have a passion for the NSPCC's mission, and for child-centred, participatory research, as well as a strong understanding of:
- Qualitative and quantitative research methods, including participatory fieldwork methods
- What makes research, particularly research with children, safe and ethical.
Looking for a team that is passionate about what it does?
You'll be part of the team of friendly and talented researchers. We're quite a big team, which is great for diversity in thought and practice. There are things we all have in common though, namely a passion for doing excellent work that makes a difference to children and a commitment to showing care for each other and those involved in our research through trauma-informed practice and inclusive approaches. We put children at the heart of our work and, in line with the NSPCC's strategic goals, we listen to and take their views and ideas into account wherever we can.
As a senior researcher you'll no doubt have a thirst for the acquisition of knowledge! The NSPCC provides rich and varied opportunities for this, both through interactions with inspiring colleagues and via structured learning and development opportunities. It is a genuinely exciting and stimulating environment for someone who cares about research and keeping babies, children and young people safe.
Does this sound like the role for you?
If you share our values and you have the experience we're looking for we would love to hear from you.
Please note that we reserve the right to close this post early if we receive a high number of applications.
Interviews for this post will take place in person at the NSPCC's Weston House office in London on December 17, 2024.
Could you use your fundraising skills to help drive forward world class cancer research, right here in Wales for Welsh people?
In this brand-new Fundraising Manager role, you'll build relationships with businesses and communities to encourage people to fundraise with a meaningful goal of saving and extending people's lives from the heart-breaking impact of cancer.
Salary: £40k FTE, £32k for 4 days
Contract: Permanent, ideally 4 days per week but will consider full-time
Location: Homebased, working across the North Wales patch with contract based from retail stores in either Bangor, Llandudno or Wrexham
Benefits: 20 days holiday (+ bank), generous pension contribution (double employee contribution up to 13%)
About the charity
Every 30 minutes, someone in Wales is diagnosed with cancer. It is predicted that one in two of us will have cancer in our lifetime and by 2030, over 230,000 people in Wales will be living with it.
As cancer outcomes in Wales tend to be poorer than other UK devolved nations and European countries with similar healthcare systems, it is critical that more research is done and quickly. The good news is that incredible work is being done in Wales to ensure earlier diagnosis and more effective treatment.
Cancer Research Wales has been driving forward world class cancer research for almost 60 years, funding more than £30m in research, awareness, and partnerships. But we need and can do so much more.
About the role
You'll be the face of the charity in North Wales, building relationships with community supporters and businesses through corporate partnerships. As this is a new role in the team, we're realistic about what's possible and you'll be supported to build a sustainable pipeline of long-term support across the region.
It's a varied role with huge amounts of potential, working closely alongside fundraising, research and retail colleagues. Opportunities will be available with a wide range of individuals and organisations, including community fundraising volunteers and committees, Welsh business, schools, universities, clubs and associations. With a growing community of donors and supporters taking part in events across Wales, you'll be given the freedom to grow the pipeline in your own way, using your own initiative and innovative ideas.
About you
We'd ideally love to see you bringing some previous fundraising experience and ideas with you, to help get things off the ground. We would be open to conversations with candidates from other sectors, who believe they have what it takes to make the transition and can demonstrate at least an understanding of fundraising principles and practice.
Here's what we'd love to see shining brightly on your CV:
- You work successfully to targets and have a proven income generation track-record.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills that allow you to inspire and influence different audiences.
- Evidence of relationship and rapport building skills.
- Confidence in pitching and presenting to a diverse range of people.
- Self-motivated and solutions focused, with a positive mindset.
- You're a team player who brings out the best in others.
The ability to speak Welsh is highly desirable, but not essential. If you don't speak Welsh and would be open to learning, the charity would be very happy to support you.
This is a truly unique opportunity, working as part of a growing team. Tons of potential and chance to be involved at an exciting time, implementing a new strategy, and working for a supportive Head of Fundraising.
If reading about this opportunity has captured your imagination, please get in touch with a copy of your profile or CV to Ellen Drummond at Charity People.
Deadline: 9am on Friday 29th November
Interview dates TBC
We'd encourage you to get in touch asap if you are interested. We're conscious of the festive break coming up and would love to start conversations as early as possible. We promise we won't close early and you won't miss out if you apply right up to the deadline though.
Charity People actively promotes equality, diversity and inclusion. Are you a major donor fundraising specialist, ready to make your mark tackling health inequalities for people affected by cancer in the North West?
Working for the region's leading cancer charity as their brand-new Philanthropy Manager, you'll put the region's cancer needs first by funding world-class research and award-winning campaigns to tackle the cause, improve the care and find the cure for cancer.
Salary: £40-45k
Contract: Permanent, full time or reduced hours
Location: Homebased with regular travel to HQ In Liverpool and across North West
Benefits: 25 days (+ bank and Christmas closure), 5% employer pension contribution
Culture: Flexible, supportive, able to work with autonomy
About the charity
Living in the North West, we're 25% more likely to be diagnosed with cancer than elsewhere in the UK and many cancers are much more common across the region. The region also suffers from extreme social-deprivation and health inequalities which, when combined, lead to a lower-than-average life-expectancy and poorer quality of life for our communities.
As the charity's first Philanthropy Manager, you'll support high-net-worth individuals to tackle inequality head on and channel their passion to drive change for local communities.
What will you be fundraising for?
This charity has consistently punched above its weight, achieving an impact beyond its size.
Since 2000, they have invested over £45m in vital research activities in the region's top Universities, constantly pushing the boundaries forward in the fight against cancer.
Your fundraising will support influential, region-wide initiatives, including award-winning public health campaigns. Recent fundable projects include a groundbreaking annual Regional Report on cancer and the innovative Lab-Coat Learning education programme for the region's schools.
There is so much to engage and excite major donors who care about improving outcomes for people in the North West. It's all about levelling the playing field for people living with the harsh reality of a cancer diagnosis.
About you
You'll be joining a passionate and well-established fundraising team. The Board and senior leadership are realistic about what it takes to get major donor fundraising off the ground.
Starting from fairly modest beginnings means there is a blank canvass and plenty of opportunity to bring fresh ideas and approaches. There is a genuine understanding that effective major donor fundraising requires strong foundations and a realistic lead-in time to see positive results. You'll be given the freedom to develop and deliver your own philanthropy strategy, analysing opportunities and challenges, and leading from the front.
Ideally you'll come with experience of working closely with individuals in previous roles, have a proven track-record of making high-value asks and be comfortable working to targets.
The role requires someone with emotional intelligence and exceptional communication skills. It's vital that you're a team player - someone who brings out the best in other people.
If you're driven by making a difference in the fight against cancer, then step forward: we'd absolutely love to hear from you.
