Safeguarding volunteer roles

Youth Leaders work directly with young people in St John Ambulance Badger Setts and Cadet Units. By organising a mixed weekly programme, this role will support the learning and development of young people into the next generation of healthy citizens. Youth Leaders also help young people develop their confidence, teamwork skills, self-discipline, and generally encourage them to strive to be the best they can be, as well as supervise and support other adult volunteers in their team.

You’ll get a huge sense of satisfaction and pride delivering an essential service. It’s great for you, great for your community and great for our nation, and it requires only a small commitment of your time. 

Our Felixstowe Cadet Unit will meet for 2 hours on a weekday evening, every week during term times. Usually between the hours of 6-9 pm, being a new unit, the team will be able to discuss the day/time when in place. Please outline your availability in your application form.

Pursuing the role

If you are successful you will need to undertake induction & training for role at these dates:

• Welcome Event (Induction) - 30/03/2025- 01/09/2025
• Training for role - To progress to a Youth Leader, a candidate would need to undertake Safeguarding Level 2, Youth FUNdamentals, Youth Principles and First Aid for Youth Leaders training. There is also opportunity to undergo Day Warrant training, though this isn't a requirement for the role.

Volunteers needed to provide support to local families within Southwark and Lewisham

Volunteers needed to support local families within Southwark and Lewisham, offering peer support to families with children under the age of 5. Support would typically include helping the family to access local activities, playing with children and offering a listening ear. All volunteers are required to attend our 6 session volunteer preparation course which covers topics such as safeguarding, personal safety, child development and developing listening skills. Next Course begins on 4th February.

Volunteering with Home-Start is suitable for anyone keen to offer peer support to local families and is particularly suitable for those who are parents or have experience of working with young children and would like to give back to their community. It is also a great opportunity for those wanting to get back into the work place or to gain experience for a career within family or social work.

Bounds Green Food Bank has been in existence since 2020, operating as an independent charity since September 2023.  Our Board of 5 Trustees seek to recruit additional people to add to our team.

We are particularly interested in people who have skills in the areas of fundraising, communication and organisational development – however, we also welcome applications from those with a genuine interest and the ability to contribute to our strategy and future direction.

Hours: 1-3 hours a week, to find around your schedule. Includes 2-hour monthly meetings (online).

Location: Remote with occasional meetings in N22, London.

Person specification: 

• Understand and support the purpose of BGFB as a community led organisation whose primary aim is to prevent/relieve poverty.

• Either have lived experience, or understand the reasons for food poverty and why BGFB is an important asset to our community. 

• Can work collaboratively with others in a team, using their skills to make decisions in the best interests of BGFB, holding responsibility and accountability individually and jointly. 

• Can demonstrate awareness and understanding of the legal responsibilities of being a Trustee, and best practice in charity governance.

• Must be able to obtain a DBS, be able to attend required training and meetings (usually twice per month), and have not been disqualified to stand as a Trustee/Director.

Experience required: 

• We are particularly interested in people with expertise in fundraising and communication. However, we would also like to hear from anyone who has skills and experience they can use to help us achieve our strategic goals. The list below are possible areas but should not be considered as finite:

1. Community organising. 

2. Safeguarding/health and safety. 

3. Food distribution. 

4. Human resources/legal.

• Experience and knowledge of volunteer-led organisations would be helpful but is not essential.

Hospital Visitor Volunteer

VoiceAbility’s professional advocates provide independent support for people under the Mental Health Act. Hospital volunteers can help people get access to advocates, and can also support the work that advocates do.

As a hospital volunteer, you might:

• hold drop-ins
• attend events and ward meetings at local facilities
• share information
• refer people to an advocate, by completing a form online or calling our helpline

Relevant Person’s Representative (RPR) Support Volunteers

Some people live in a care home because other people have decided that’s the best and safest place for them.  They’re entitled to have support from an RPR, who is there to make sure they get the best care possible.  Some people have family members as their RPR, the RPR might be a person from VoiceAbility.  An RPR Support Volunteer supports the VoiceAbility RPR to make sure a person’s views are listened to when decisions are made about their care.

As an RPR Support Volunteer you might:

· Visit people in their care home, to make sure they’re getting the right care and support

· Talk with them about their feelings, thoughts and wishes

· Raise concerns

· Keep detailed notes and records

· Make a real difference to someone’s life

Service Team Volunteer

VoiceAbility’s service team volunteer role is a varied role that provides support to advocacy service teams in a number of ways.

As a service team volunteer in England, you might:

• support the local advocacy team as needed
• drop off promotional materials at various locations
• attend events or assist in organising small local events
• support staff with presentations
• accompany advocacy staff on visits
• support staff with group advocacy and self-advocacy workshops
• submit regular reporting forms

Volunteering opportunities are available Monday to Friday between 09:00 and 17:00.  You will need to be over 18 years old and be living in the UK.

A unique opportunity to teach prison inmates sewing and designing skills while encouraging their own creativity.

Help engender greater self-belief and enhance potential employability upon release.

We will be using surplus fabric from the textile trade which would otherwise go into landfill.

This is not seen as a commercial enterprise so any profit made from selling marketable products would be invested in prisoner welfare.

We are recruiting a team of volunteers to teach cutting and machine-sewing skills in Pentonville prison, with inmates vetted for this project and with strictly applied safeguarding in place. MA students from Saint Martins Arts University, under the auspices of Professor Lorraine Gamman’s ‘Design Against Crime’ project will also be contributing time and creative input.

Ideally we foresee volunteers and inmates exchanging and developing ideas together in a supportive and creative space.

Volunteers will be asked to commit for at least six months to a minimum of 3-4 hours a week and would in a typical session together with at least one other volunteer be working with up to five learners. A one-session training on working in a prison will be provided. 

Trustees play a vital role in ensuring Middlewich & District Foodbank meets its core purpose by overseeing the management and administration of the charity and ensuring that the foodbank has a clear strategy in line with our vision and goals.

What will you be doing?

The Risk and Assets Lead Trustee will be responsible for the management of a risk register, ensuring that the Board of Trustees are aware and kept up to date regarding their legal, regulatory, and governance responsibilities. In this role you will monitor the food bank’s risk log, ensuring that the Board of Trustees at Middlewich & District Foodbank are aware and kept up to date with regard to current risks and their status.

Key tasks:

Trustee (Risk Lead) Responsibilities:

• to ensure that the Trustee board understand their legal and regulatory responsibilities with regard to the maintenance and updating of the charity’s risk register and other matters relating to risk.
• to maintain the risk register for the charity, liaising with the Chair of Trustees and wider board to identify when risks require review.
• to ensure, along with operational management support, that policies and risk assessments are in place and kept up to date with the changing internal and external environment.
• to be the allocated point of contact for risk related enquiries.
• to liaise with relevant teams at Trussell to ensure that the risk register is updated in line with current best practice guidance
• along with operational management support, to ensure that all relevant staff, trustees or volunteers are aware of the correct process to follow when risks are identified, including how to raise any concerns.
• to ensure that the charity’s assets are properly maintained and insured.

Other responsibilities, along with the board of trustees, include:

• to approve, support and guide the charity’s purpose, vision, strategy, goals and objectives.
• to manage the charity’s resources responsibly, including ensuring the charity’s assets are used only to carry out its purpose, avoid undue risk, and not over-commit the charity.
• to ensure appropriate financial plans are in place, budgets are monitored, and progress is evaluated.
• to review and approve financial statements.
• to ensure the charity has appropriate procedures to comply with current legislation and good practice, including employment, health and safety, equity, diversity and inclusion, safeguarding and GDPR compliance/data protection.
• to prepare for and regularly attend and participate in board and subcommittee meetings and any trustee away days.

What are we looking for?

We are looking for people who want to help their local community and work towards the eradication of food poverty. Our ideal candidates would demonstrate:

• knowledge or experience of risk management and a charity’s legal and regulatory responsibilities in relation to risk management.
• an ability to lead on and monitor any matters relating to risk.
• it is not necessary to have previous board experience as training and support will be provided. This role could support someone taking their first steps to develop wider board level and governance experience.

Independent Visitor Role Description
Purpose: To appoint a volunteer to visit, advise, and befriend a young person in the care of the Local Authority, providing contact with someone independent of their professional network.

Accountable to: Independent Visitors/Mentors and Peer Mentoring Coordinator

Main Tasks

• Visit a young person monthly and build a positive relationship as an adult friend.
• Encourage participation in activities for social, emotional, and educational development.
• Provide timely written reports on visits.
• Maintain contact with responsible adults for the young person.
• Ensure the young person’s views are heard.
• Ensure the young person knows their rights and is encouraged to participate in decisions.
• Promote the young person’s unique needs related to their race, culture, language, religion, disability, gender, or sexual orientation, challenging discrimination.
• Abide by the confidentiality policy and report any safeguarding concerns.
• Keep secure records of visits and significant events.
• Safely destroy documents once no longer part of the scheme.
