Job Purpose:
The main purpose of this role is to lead and coordinate communications activities across the Society’s policy and external affairs activities, ensuring that our work is communicated strategically and visible to appropriate audiences.
Key responsibilities:
Understanding opportunities and the changing external environment
- Develop our understanding of the preferences and needs of our key internal and external audiences to better align our policy and external affairs communications to those preferences and needs.
- Monitor and respond to emerging trends to ensure our communications channels and content for policy and external affairs remain timely and relevant.
- Build a network of key contacts across critical and adjacent organisations to maximise potential routes into influencing decision-making and make the best use of resources through collaborative working.
Development of strategies and plans
- Lead on strategic communication of the Society’s campaign priorities
- Contribute to the development of the Society’s communications strategy across media, social media and communications planning.
- Work closely with colleagues across the organisation to maximise the communications value of the Society’s key policy and external affairs outputs and activities.
- Contribute to costed plans for communications campaigns that meet key strategic goals and include monitoring for impact.
Media relations
- Lead on the Society’s media relations work – proactively identify and exploit appropriate media opportunities to promote campaign priorities, drafting media statements and managing launches and announcements.
- Develop and maintain relationships with journalists across our key topic areas and respond to press queries.
- Expertly advise, assist and brief the Society’s key spokespeople in respect of media relations issues and opportunities.
- Manage, and develop the Society’s statistical ambassador scheme, supporting individuals and ensuring we have a pipeline of spokespeople that reflects the diversity of the data professions.
Content creation and editorial
- Develop communications content including blogs, press statements, posts and thought pieces to communicate our campaigns and policy work.
- Contribute to the operation of the Society’s social media accounts, working with wider staff to ensure we are reflecting the breadth of the Society’s activities across the various platforms.
- Produce write-ups of events and roundtables.
External affairs
- Work with the CEO and Head of Policy and Advocacy to identify and develop relationships with external stakeholders, both UK-based and international and across government, civil society, academia and business, acting as a convenor, trusted advisor and critical friend.
- Lead on the Society’s statistical excellence awards programme, including developing and maintaining relationships with awards sponsors to ensure the awards are both impactful and financially sustainable.
- Lead on the planning and delivery of policy focused events
- Support the publication, launch and dissemination of relevant outputs across the policy team, and work with colleagues to ensure relevant and timely and communication of policy positions to support policy and advocacy objectives.

Management
- Monitor and report on progress and performance against targets.
- Project manage campaigns, external affairs and communications activities, ensuring that work is appropriate, of high quality, and sufficient volume to maintain presence and reputation.

Interfaces with other teams and groups
- Contribute to a cross-RSS communications group to share comms plans and outputs and identify opportunities for synergy and collaboration.

Person Specification
- Significant relevant experience in media relations and external affairs

Working for the RSS
Pension and benefits
Our defined contribution pension scheme can be joined after three months in post. Your contributions of up to 8% of salary will be double matched by the Society (making a maximum contribution by the Society of 16%). A training budget, season ticket loan, cycle to work scheme and employee assistance programme are also available.
Location
The RSS office is in central London. We offer flexible working arrangements, and this is a hybrid role with a minimum two days a week working in the office. In person attendance for certain meeting is required, including all-staff / team meetings and governance / committee meetings that take place in person. Limited travel within the UK and internationally may be required.
Working hours
35 per week full-time. Applications for job shares, part-time and flexible working will also be considered. The post-holder will be the point of contact for any out-of-office hours press queries.
Holidays
25 days per annum, plus bank holidays and an additional shut down between Christmas and New Year.
Probation

How Will you Make a Difference?
The Executive Assistant (EA) will provide high-level administrative support to Amna’s CEO, Senior Leadership Team (SLT) and Board of Trustees. This includes administrative help such as managing calendars, drafting communications and briefings, planning, and organising meetings, inbox support, travel, office administration and personal assistance. It also includes working on and managing special projects including research, data analysis, preparation for public speaking, writing and research.
This dynamic and creative position requires the ability to anticipate needs, think critically, and offer solutions to problems with a high level of professionalism and confidentiality. The ideal candidate will have excellent communication skills including strong written and verbal skills, the ability to work with little supervision, and manage simultaneous priorities within the leadership team.
The role holder will report to the CEO.
Key areas of responsibilities:
CEO/SLT Support

Work closely with the CEO to keep them well informed of upcoming commitments and responsibilities, following up appropriately. Act as a "barometer", staying attuned to the internal and external environment and keeping the CEO updated on relevant issues.

The role of Helpline Advisor
For several years, Guts UK have provided information, support and guidance to our community over the phone and by email. This year, we’re formalising that service into a professional Helpline and are looking for someone to join our small, talented support team.
During the initial 6-month trial period, the Helpline phone lines will be open Monday to Friday, 10am to 2pm, but this may expand or change later in the year. Queries could be received via phone, email or web-query form.
As a member of the Helpline team, you will offer on demand information, support, guidance and signposting primarily to enquirers living with, or caring for those with, digestive conditions and symptoms. The support offered will include receiving calls, emails and web form queries from people who are looking for more information about their digestive condition, need to know where they can turn to for support, or are waiting on a diagnosis and need help navigating how to get there. You will provide appropriate information, guidance and signposting to our own information and other external support organisations. As a charity, Guts UK covers all digestive symptoms and conditions, across the whole of the UK, and so no two days will be the same and queries will be diverse and interesting.
The role holder will man the Helpline (alongside others from the team) from 10am to 2pm (with a 30-minute lunch break) and during that time will receive, respond to and appropriately log phone calls, web-queries and emails.

About the role
We The Curious is about to enter an exciting new phase in its mission to connect and empower everyone through shared creative science learning experiences. It is nearly a year since we reopened and as we enter our 25th Anniversary Year there is lots to celebrate and talk about with our new multi-year strategy, Plan 2030 which encompasses numerous major projects for which we must develop and cultivate support.
The Development Team is responsible for fundraising across the whole organisation and the stewardship and development of our donors and supporters. The other members of the team are the Development Manager, the Gifts and Partnerships Manager and Development Account Manager. We are looking for a Trusts and Foundations Manager who is collaborative, organised and an excellent communicator to join the team to help us maximise and unlock some very exciting fundraising opportunities.
As Trusts and Foundations Manager you will use your skills in research and persuasion to identify grants funding opportunities, establish new relationships and write and submit proposals to trusts, foundations, Lottery funders, the local authority, universities and research councils. Working closely with the rest of the team and project managers from other departments you will raise between six and seven figure sums for our programme of creative science learning and inclusion projects.
What will you do in this role?
Role specific responsibilities
_Identify new grants funding sources, including trusts and foundations, research councils and statutory/government funders.
_Prepare and submit high quality funding proposals, expressions of interest and budgets in accordance with strict deadlines and application criteria, to a diverse range of funders, for up to seven-figure sums.
_Work closely with internal departmental teams to develop We The Curious projects so that they are ready for fundraising and write detailed and compelling cases for support that include timelines, budgets and evaluation and reporting plans.
_Support the funding applications of other partner organisations by collaboratively drafting budgets, attending project development meetings and writing letters of support.
_Support the Development Account Manager to cultivate potential funders, including attending on-site visits and events, phone calls and delivering presentations to secure support.
_Support the Development Account Manager to manage a portfolio of funders including overseas relationships, fulfilling reporting and public recognition requirements, thank you letters, regular communications and other correspondence.
_Liaise with the finance team to record new income and report on expenditure in accordance with funder deadlines.
_Support the Gifts and Partnerships Manager and Development Manager in identifying new strategic opportunities and exploring new types of income stream. What we’re looking for from you

_You’ll have experience of working very closely with project delivery teams to develop projects, ensure they know what they need to deliver for funders and monitor their expenditure.

We The Curious is about to enter an exciting new phase in its mission to connect and empower everyone through shared creative science learning experiences. It is now a year since we reopened and there is plenty to celebrate in our 25th Anniversary Year. We have exciting projects which range from community and educational outreach through to preparing for some major capital projects for which we must develop and cultivate support.
The Development Team is responsible for fundraising across the whole organisation and the stewardship and development of our donors and supporters. The other members of the team are the Development Team Manager, Development Manager, Trusts and Foundations Manager and the Development Team Account Manager. We are looking for a Fundraiser to join the team, to help us maximise and unlock some very exciting opportunities.

The Volunteer Relationship Manager will play a crucial role in overseeing and optimising the volunteer programme within the College of Paramedics.

INTRODUCTION
St George’s Hospital Charity manages a portfolio of over 200 Special Purpose Funds (SPFs), with a total over £3.6m. These funds, comprising donor-gifted and community-fundraised income, are designated to support specific wards, departments, research areas, or staff and patient groups. Each SPF is overseen by designated Fund Advisors, comprising staff from St George’s University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust (the Trust) and City, St George’s University of London, who hold delegated authority for expenditure approvals and funding applications. We have developed a new organisational strategy focused on enhancing our impact through grant-making, and we are now in an exciting phase of implementation. The Grants Funds Manager will also be responsible for the day-to-day management of the SPF portfolio, stakeholder engagement, communications, marketing, and administration, requiring collaboration across the Charity, the Trust, and the University at all levels.

Presently, we contribute grants and generate funds of £2 million annually. With an ambitious goal, we aim to double both our yearly fundraising and grant allocations to reach £4 million within the coming years.
ABOUT THE ROLE
Purpose of the role
To support senior management, the board of trustees and the wider charity leadership team with the strategy implementation, the management and administration of the Charity’s SPFs. As a priority, in the next 12 months, this role is tasked to implement the SPF strategy which has been agreed by the Charity’s Board of Trustees. The strategy is to re-organise and restructure the shape of the SPF portfolio of funds to minimise administrative burden, maximise the charity’s flexibility in spending decisions and reflect the best possible structure of services in the hospital so that we can deliver our charitable purposes of advancing healthcare to maximum effect.
This is why we are looking for someone who has expertise in change management, stakeholder engagement and strategic communication who is able to understand Charity Commission guidance and apply it. These are the skills necessary to implement the SPF strategy.
The next stage of the strategy will require a very strong grasp of detail, strong and confident communication and organisational skills to ensure stakeholders understand planned changes, in order to secure their support for them.
Background to the role
This role was originally created to provide dedicated resource to optimise the efficiency of our SPF portfolio, and champion these SPFs both internally among the Charity’s staff and externally within the Trust and University.
This is a role which must operate at a micro and macro level, paying attention to the detail of management, administration and systems but also with the ability to think strategically and make recommendations to senior management and trustees. The successful candidate will be highly organised and outgoing and will be an excellent project manager, with lots of initiative and the ability to reach out to people to build strong relationships.
You will be a key member of the Grants team and be managed by the Head of Grants, but you will also work closely with all charity teams given the nature of this all-encompassing role, including providing an important link between Grants and Fundraising because of the income raised into SPFs.

The Head of Mass Participation Fundraising is responsible for overseeing our mass fundraising team. Leading the Events, Community and Individual Giving teams to maximise income and to introduce and lead on a new and exciting mass participation programme. Developing outstanding supporter relationships and delivering long-term sustainable income through innovative, audience led fundraising.
MAIN RESPONSIBILITIES
Specific Duties
Leadership
- To lead and inspire the Mass Participation team fostering a collaborative and high performing culture that delivers against income and objectives
- Provide clear and supportive leadership that motivates staff to achieve, develop and grow in their roles
- Undertake quarterly reviews for all direct reports
Mass Participation Fundraising
- Lead the development of all fundraising products, propositions and community and events, to effectively acquire and engage our mass audience target markets
- Use innovation and donor and market research to help define and shape Winston Wish’s Mass fundraising offer
- Lead the development of a robust lottery programme
- Work collaboratively with the Director of Income Generation to develop an approach to Gifts in Wills and legacy marketing
- Maximise income, by overseeing the development of key income sources, including community, challenge events, in memoriam and regular giving programmes
- Drive an innovation-focused culture, constantly evolving our product offerings to expand the charity’s reach and impact
- Maintain up-to-date knowledge on sector and market trends, the legal environment impacting on public fundraising and ensure compliance with standards determined by Fundraising Regulator
- Lead on the development and execution of acquisition strategies to meet agreed targets
- Lead on the development and execution of retention, conversion and upgrade strategies to ensure donor LTV and sustainable income
Strategy, Planning and reporting
- Develop and execute bold strategies to grow the charity’s mass participation portfolio, optimising supporter journey and maximising income generation
- Work with the Director of Income Generation and the Head of Mass Participation Fundraising to develop the annual budget, including leading on monthly performance reports and contributing to quarterly reforecasts and reporting against KPI’s and milestones
- Oversee the development of supporter journeys and stewardship of all mass audiences and key community relationships to maximise retention and ensure long-term income growth
Collaboration
- In collaboration with the Marketing Communications team, oversee the development of compelling integrated fundraising acquisition and engagement plans
- Liaise with trustees’ internal stakeholders to develop Mass fundraising activity, and contribute to reporting for trustees and SLT as required
- Manage key agency relationships to deliver successful fundraising

- A proven track record in mass participation or public fundraising roles leading on the development of new, successful programmes
- Demonstratable strong strategic planning skills and the ability to develop and implement long-term strategies to achieve fundraising targets and enhance the charity's mission
- Proven leadership and people management skills, with experience in overseeing multi-disciplinary teams. Essential experience includes team leadership, staff motivation, setting clear objectives, and fostering a collaborative work environment
- Experience in effectively developing, managing and reporting complex income and expenditure budgets
- Exceptional communication and negotiation skills, with the ability to influence at senior levels and excellent written skills

The role covers the full marketing mix, including paid social, email, print, direct mail, radio, and other relevant channels.
With strong marketing experience, you can skilfully plan and deliver campaigns across online and offline channels to reach targets. You have experience developing engaging direct response campaigns and excellent copywriting skills to create materials for different channels and audiences.
Passionate, creative, and detail-oriented, you bring exceptional project management skills and a drive to make a meaningful impact. You thrive in a fast-paced environment, working flexibly and adapting as needed.
Your project management experience enables you to oversee multiple campaigns while collaborating confidently with agencies, stakeholders, and teams to deliver quality work on time. A strong understanding of KPIs allows you to evaluate and optimize campaigns, applying insights to improve future performance. These skills also equip you to manage, support, and develop the Community & Events Officer.

Primary location of role and hybrid working
This role is primarily based in our London office. Our hybrid working model allows you to work up to 3 days per week at home.
