Main purpose and scope of the role:
Parentkind is a national charity representing 13,000 Parent Teacher Associations (PTAs) and has a long term ambition to be the voice of parents in policy making.
We are looking for someone to support our work in Westminster and Whitehall, improving our relationships across Parliament and inside government as we seek to be the credible voice of parents in UK policy making.
The successful candidate will have demonstrable experience of advocacy and policy research in Westminster, either within Parliament or government. If you have a passion for politics, a background in policy research and an interest in education policy and politics this is the role for you.
The role will involve:
- Conducting research on parents, including polling of parents and their views. We have an ambition to make high quality policy recommendations based on this research.
- Alongside the research requirements of the role, you will be expected to support our political and broader stakeholder engagement activity to make sure the work we do is seen by the right people.
- Organise and plan political events to communicate our research, including roundtables, lunches and dinners and launch events in Westminster.
- Lead on responding to public consultations on behalf of Parentkind to ensure the voice of parents is heard in the public consultations.
You will represent Parentkind at important events and meetings and have the chance to promote our research and policy recommendations. We would particularly welcome candidates who can demonstrate some media experience, including writing press releases and placing stories with national media outlets.
Duties and key responsibilities
Policy research and analysis
- To conduct research under the guidance of the Director of Policy and Research.
- To produce summarise large amounts of information and produce briefing material on education policy for external audiences, often at pace.
- To support the development of parent opinion polling related to our policy work.
- Respond to relevant consultations on behalf of Parentkind.
Policy development
- To provide rapid briefing material for any relevant future business relating to Parliament and the UK government.
- To provide political monitoring and identify opportunities for political engagement.
- To support the development of policy recommendations and experience of publishing policy related research.
Political engagement
To plan and organise political events, such as roundtable discussions, lunches and dinners and launch events in Westminster.
To identify political stakeholders relevant to our work in Parliament and the UK government, including:
- officials inside government departments,
- elected representatives,
- think tanks and other relevant research institutions.
To maintain a wide range of political contacts and meet with political stakeholders to promote our research and policy work.
To meet with organisations with an interest in our work and provide effective briefings.
To attend party conferences and other education led events to represent Parentkind.
Media engagement
To support the Director of Policy and Research in media engagement, including background research for press releases.
To summarise our policy and research ready for social media platforms.

This role will support the delivery of our ambitious policy influencing programme, helping to implement influencing plans to bring about the changes needed to reduce, prevent and eventually end the need for food banks in the UK. The Public Affairs Officer will be responsible for planning, delivering and monitoring public affairs activity with a particular focus on the UK Parliament. This will include a focus on engaging with parliamentarians and policy influencers who are part of Christian communities.
Role responsibilities
· Planning and delivering impactful public affairs activity: Supporting the development and delivery of public affairs plans for key projects, including high profile policy influencing campaigns, and planning and delivering engaging events in Parliament and at party conferences.
· Build support for the Trussell Trust’s policy influencing goals among UK parliamentarians and policy influencers who are part of Christian communities: Working closely with the Church Engagement team to identify opportunities to engage key audiences and effectively communicate our policy asks and strategic goal to end the need for food banks.
· Supporting a strategic approach to public affairs activity: Making effective use of public affairs systems and processes, including stakeholder mapping and horizon scanning for opportunities to engage, mobilise and work with key audiences, including UK Parliamentarians, UK Government Ministers and advisers, and assessing their impact.
· Building and managing strong relationships with key external stakeholders: Developing relationships, partnerships and networks to help raise the profile, credibility and influence of the Trussell Trust and our policy positions, particularly in the UK Parliament and with faith-based organisations.
· Working closely across the wider organisation to support our policy influencing aims: Supporting key stakeholders across the Trussell Trust to plan, deliver and participate in the Trussell Trust’s policy influencing work, including senior leaders, people with lived experience of poverty and food bank staff and volunteers.
· Building awareness of our public affairs activity and impact across the Trussell Trust: Providing accessible and engaging updates and insights from the UK Parliament and Government relating to key policy areas and helping ensure alignment with public affairs activity across the UK’s nations and regions.

Technical skills and minimum knowledge:
· Experience of working or volunteering in a political, public affairs or policy environment
· Knowledge of the machinery and structure of government and the UK Parliament including knowledge of faith-based structures and groupings within Parliament

The role:
The BSAVA is looking for an experienced policy professional in the areas of policy development and legislative change set against a backdrop of a complex and regulated environment. The role operates within a changing landscape dealing with high-profile issues for the sector.
The successful candidate will have the opportunity to shape BSAVA’s policies and national legislation with the aim of influencing outcomes of benefit to the veterinary profession, its clients and the health and welfare of companion animals.
Skills and experience:
We are looking for a self-motivated individual with a track record of success, who can demonstrate excellent understanding of policy-making and legislative change in an unpredictable environment. They will have significant previous experience of working in a policy role, ideally within a life-sciences or a veterinary or human medicine setting.
Experience of working with central government departments along with an understanding of parliamentary processes are preferable for the role. Equally important is the ability to analyse and critique information, formulate evidence-based solutions and accurately convey proposals to influence outcomes.
The successful candidate will be an excellent communicator, with strong written and verbal skills. They will be able to demonstrate effective engagement skills across a diverse range of internal and external stakeholders, including the membership. Diplomacy and political awareness will be essential to ensure successful outcomes. Experience of PR and reputation management as part of the policy-making agenda is desirable.
The candidate must be flexible to work outside of normal office hours depending on the demands of the role which are often driven by the external environment and national events. The role is hybrid, incorporating working from home with travelling to meetings in or around London as required. Therefore, to facilitate the needs of the role and the organisation, ideally candidates would be located in Bedfordshire, Buckinghamshire, Northamptonshire or Oxfordshire.

About the BSAVA:
The BSAVA is a professional membership association which exists to advance care for companion animals. With a membership of more than 11,000 veterinary surgeons, vet nurses and students, we work in the UK and internationally to promote excellence in small animal practice through education and science, by facilitating training, conducting research, and developing policy. This post sits within the Policy and (Corporate) Communications Department and reports to the Head of Department.

the3million is looking for a new Community Organiser to help us build the power of EU citizens in the UK and of their non-EU family members, working alongside two other Organisers in our team and the members of our EU Citizens’ Campaigns Network
Since Brexit, EU citizens in the UK and their family members have been brought under the Hostile Environment. the3million has been providing information to EU citizens and has continuously advocated for a fairer immigration system, especially in making the EU Settlement Scheme more accessible to all.
We provide a platform for EU citizens to become politically active and use their voices to advocate for themselves. The Community Organiser will be part of a team to create opportunities for EU citizens to have increased capacity to engage in activism and lead the change they want to see in the UK, their home.
This role is at an officer level and suitable for people who are looking for their first paid role in Organising, but have had some grassroots experience, even if on an informal or voluntary basis. You can expect to be mentored by an experienced Community Organiser and thereby learn a lot while on the job. More experienced candidates are also welcome to apply.We are currently in the process of applying for funding to extend this role. If we are successful, the contract will be extended by 2 years and we will work with the successful Organiser on a progression route, reviewing the job holder’s salary level after they have been in the role for 6 months.
Position type: Part time, between 3 to 4 days a week, depending on the successful candidate’s preference
Duration: 4 months (September - December 2024) with possibility of a 2 year extension from January 2025, subject to funding

**Duties and responsibilities **
1. Co-lead the3million’s “EU Citizens’ Campaigns Network”

Working with the Community Organiser - Campaigns to recruit more members of the EU Citizens’ Campaigns Network by regularly reaching out to relevant communities and booking 1-1 meetings with key community leaders;

Working with the Community Organiser - Campaigns to support and guide our existing Network members made up of over 40 community leaders who have a variety of backgrounds and levels of experience in campaigning, developing their confidence and ability to become effective change-makers and encouraging them to take coordinated, strategic actions to advance our campaigns;

Co-facilitate monthly Network meetings: setting agendas, facilitating Breakout rooms, taking minutes and following up with Network members on their agreed actions;

Support the3million’s campaigns by supporting our Head of Policy and Advocacy on our MP-facing work in Parliament and our Communications Manager to ensure that our campaigns are featured on our social media, newsletters and clearly communicated to key stakeholders such as partner organisations in the migration sector and to key community leaders on the ground
2. Relationship-building and in-person workshops

Rolling out a series of “listening sessions” and “Know Your Rights” workshops with community groups across the country: liaising with relevant community leaders to visit them and their communities, this may include working on Saturdays (and taking time off in lieu during the week) and running in-person sessions. You will receive guidance on the format from the Community Organiser - Campaigns but will be the main person delivering such sessions on the ground.
3. Professional learning and development
- Taking a proactive approach to your learning and development towards becoming a confident and versatile Community Organiser and Campaigns specialist, you will have regular check-ins with your line manager (Community Organiser - Political Campaigns) and engage in an ongoing process of evaluation, thereby reflecting on the work you are carrying out to draw out learning and being willing to stretch yourself. The Network Lead plays a central role in helping us achieve our vision to end the need for food banks in the UK. This is a varied, proactive and fast-paced role that involves representing the Trussell Trust on policy and public affairs in the region/nation, the leadership of a dynamic team of area managers that supports the network of food banks in the region/nation to deliver emergency food, and the coordination of projects and partnerships to support the food banks in our network to reduce the need for their services locally.

Strategic Leadership: Manage the delivery in the region/nation of food bank operations and key strategic projects that are part of the Trussell Trust’s five-year strategy to end the need for food banks.
