Job description

Research Module Leader

Location: Waverley Abbey, Waverley Abbey House, Waverley Lane, Farnham, Surrey, GU9 8EP

Contract: Temporary, Part time

Hours: 0.4 FTE days per week

Salary: £40,000 FTE per annum dependent on experience and qualifications

JOB PURPOSE

To lead and manage the Research Module for the MA in Counselling (MAC) year 3 and for the MA in Therapeutic Counselling and Psychotherapy (MATCP) year 3 which share the same module.

To chair the Research Ethics Committee which oversees the process of gaining ethical approval for all Waverley Abbey College (WAC) programmes (MAC, MATCP & MA SF), and process all requests for ethical approval from WAC staff, students, and any external researchers wishing to recruit WAC staff or students.

To ensure that the distinctive character of Waverley Abbey College’s counselling pedagogical frameworks are maintained, in relation to research ethics and validated programme criteria for research.

KEY TASKS

The temporary Research Module Leader and REC Chairperson will oversee the following tasks:

  • To be responsible to lead the Research Module for the MAC and MATCP programmes ensuring the successful delivery of its teaching, learning and assessment strategies.

To be responsible for:

  • Collaboratively working alongside MAC and MATCP supervisors/ tutors in the planning and implementation of the successful delivery of all facets of the research module, and especially in the supervision and support of research students and research supervisors, as outlined in the module narratives of the validated programmes.
  • Ensuring that all research proposals are reviewed by research supervisors/ tutors and meet with the ethical and legal obligations as outlined in the Waverley Abbey College Research Ethics Committee Policy and Procedures and module learning materials, including issues of risk assessment, and rigour of empirical qualitative research.
  • Ensuring that supervisors with relevant research and clinical expertise are assigned to supervise topics chosen by students.
  • Oversee any student or research supervisory issues that arise in the delivery and completion of the research module.
  • Overseeing how supervision enables student progression through the stages of research: i.e. proposals, ethics and risk assessments, analysing data, determining findings, and in the final written production of a dissertation that meets all requirements for successful submission and assessment as per the assessment criteria.

Maintain fair systems for student assessments, including:

  • Maintaining standards in marking and grading of research proposals and dissertations
  • Ensuring supervision/ tutorial support and oversight of students’ personal development

To support, encourage, develop and manage the research supervision/ tutorial team. Responsibilities include:

  • Selection of supervisors as required, in consultation with the Academic Dean or University representative
  • Line manage and provide oversight of supervisors/ tutors, including team-building and individual feedback

Supported by the Academic Dean, to be responsible for the welfare, spiritual well-being and psychological safety of the research students, within the parameters of the research module. Responsibilities include:

  • Offering pastoral support, dealing with student complaints and grievances, and handling any cases of academic misconduct, in line with Waverley Abbey College policies and procedures

To be responsible for the structure and oversight of the Research Ethics Committee. Responsibilities include:

  • Overseeing the obligations for ethical research by all WAC students, staff and any external researchers working with WAC staff or students, including the MAC, MATCP, and MA SF.
  • Chairing the Research Ethics Committee and agenda setting of meetings.
  • Reviewing research proposals in the light of ethical and legal guidelines and best clinical practice with other research supervisors.
  • Determining required revisions of proposals in the light of ethical guidelines.
  • Making collaborative decisions regarding which research proposals may be given ethical approval and which ones either need revising, adapting, or not undertaking.
  • Communicating decisions in writing in a timely manner to students, ensuring that all required changes and conditions are succinctly communicated.
  • To review proposals and ethical matters to ensure that changes and conditions have been satisfactorily met.
  • Maintaining the integrity and ethos of the Waverley integrative framework and consistency with overall postgraduate research requirements
  • Ensure that the Research Ethics Committee (REC) Policy is up to date, and that it is applied effectively by the REC and Waverley students and staff conducting empirical research via the process of reviewing applications for ethical approval.
  • To oversee and engage in marking and supervision responsibilities as needed.
  • To maintain a personal counselling caseload (e.g., in private practice or at an agency) in accordance with the highest standards required by professional bodies, including having professional indemnity insurance, under regular clinical supervision, and any other requirements in accordance with the context of the practice (e.g., DBS check)
  • Attendance at Waverley Abbey College Research Ethics Committee Meetings
  • To have BACP/ ACC full membership, or other recognised professional body
  • Any other reasonable duties as requested by the post-holder’s line manager.
