The Royal United Services Institute (RUSI) is one of the world’s leading research think-tanks in the field of defence, security, and geopolitics. The Research Business Development team was established in 2023 to support RUSI’s nine research groups to meet their annual funding targets by responding to competitive bids, proactively identifying new funding opportunities, and sharing best practice across the organisation.​

​Main purpose of the post​

We are seeking to appoint a Strategic Bids Manager with experience in managing the development and submissions process for successful research bids, to be part of a wider team that spearheads RUSI’s research fundraising efforts. Reporting to the Director, Research Business Development, the successful candidate will lead the process for preparing high-value bids, including drafting sections of the narrative and reviewing budgets, and be responsible for building central resources to improve and facilitate effective business development operations. This is a highly collaborative role that involves building very strong internal relationships at all levels of the organisation and with external stakeholders and skilfully managing competing priorities, personalities, and deadlines. We are seeking a team player with a pragmatic and positive attitude, who will enjoy learning about RUSI’s research areas and building stronger systems and processes to help us to make Business Development more efficient and successful.

​Key tasks​

• For UK Government, US Government, EU and Canadian Government bids, and bids over £100,000 value to RUSI:
• Serve as the institutional point of contact for the key funders listed above – attend Early Market Engagements/supplier events, funder events, webinars, to ensure you are up to date on their priorities and RUSI is competitive with our bids. Maintain a centralised database and disseminate up-to-date information on each funder’s practices, key dates, preferences, upcoming opportunities etc.
• For all other bids, review budgets for accuracy, competitiveness and to ensure costs are in line with RUSI’s policies and previous submissions, and, once finalised, seek approval from the COO.
• Work with the Director for Research Business Development, Research Directors and the Deputy Director General to identify and cultivate new relationships within each of the key funders, ensuring that we have good awareness of upcoming plans, expectations and priorities.
• Facilitate links to partner organisations (primes) and build and manage consortia-based relationships to ensure we have oversight of upcoming opportunities and are able to negotiate successful partnerships.
• Ensure use of best practice across research groups in our approach to bids and budgets, and that key documents, outcomes, research impact, and decisions are saved centrally for future use.
• With support from the BD team, develop and execute a plan to inform, train and mentor research and central services colleagues on best practice for bids, including a focus on wider business awareness.
• Respond to due diligence requests received by RUSI from research funders, ensure we have a central database of up-to-date policies and documents required to respond successfully and quickly.
• Work with the Business Development team to build organisational systems and processes for effective BD, collaborate with BD colleagues to share feedback and ideas, support each other, and develop central projects to improve BD across the organisation.
• Attend Business Development meetings with research groups and build strong relationships with project managers and project officers, capturing feedback and seeking input to BD processes and practices.
• Manage the process for new funder approvals with the Deputy Director General.
• Be a member of RUSI’s Research Committee and report on bid statuses and other relevant information when needed.

Essential Skills and Experience:

​

• An extensive track record of submitting high-quality research project proposals to the funders listed above, with a demonstrable success rate.
• Able to produce clear, accurate and insightful written output, setting high standards and enhancing our external reputation through the production of strong bids.
• Skilled at dealing with high-pressured situations with sensitivity and in a calm manner.
• A track record of producing and reviewing small, medium, and large project budgets, often with specific funder requirements, and an understanding of how to develop competitive financial bids.
• Strong knowledge and awareness of common requirements for bid submissions, including statements on duty of care, quality assurance, supply chain management, gender, and diversity, equity, and inclusion.
• Outstanding time management skills and a willingness to work flexibly, juggling shifting priorities and competing deadlines, managing people’s expectations effectively. Ability to agree and uphold effective boundaries to protect your time, with support from the Director of Research Business Development.
• Existing contacts or connections to partners from RUSI’s key funding institutions and/or primes.
• A good understanding of contractual matters and experience in resolving them.
• Experience in training colleagues on best practice and developing associated materials.
• Strong IT and Microsoft skills (Excel, Word, Outlook, and PowerPoint)
• Project management certification such as Prince 2.
• An interest in, and knowledge of, defence, security and geopolitics.​​​

As a HR Assistant – Apprentice you will provide a high level of administrative support to the HR Manager and wider Corporate Service Department, helping in the development and implementation of HR practices, processes, and functions within the Charity. Duties to Include:

- Maintain, create, and update all employee records in an accurate and timely manner.
- Undertake administrative activities linked to the employee lifecycle from new starters, promotions, colleague changes and leavers.
- To check and maintain all pre-employment documentation associated with Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) and Right to Work compliance prior to the commencement of employment.

The scope of the role of the Financial Controller is to lead a best-in-class financial control function which:

What the job involves

The Health Information Coordinator is a vital role supporting a busy team that creates health information and communications for men who have been diagnosed with prostate cancer or those at high risk of developing it.

You’ll have the opportunity to play a key role in keeping all the health information on the website up-to-date and in line with the Patient Information Forum’s PIF TICK quality standard. As well as coordinating and editing the team’s social media communications. Supporting the promotion of our resources both internally and externally, you’ll help to evaluate the effectiveness of the service we provide.

The role is responsible for making sure all our health information publications are in stock, so we deliver an effective health information service for men and their families affected by prostate cancer. You’ll also develop and maintain administrative systems to support the team’s work including financial processing.

We’re looking for a pro-active and highly organised person to join our team. You’ll be self-motivated and able to multi-task, supporting a busy team while keeping on top of your own projects. You’ll have experience of communicating in plain English across multiple platforms including social media and our website. You’ll also have the opportunity to develop an in-depth understanding of how medical and health-related information is produced to standard guidelines.

You’ll be a strong team player with excellent interpersonal skills, you’ll be happy communicating with a wide range of people, from men with prostate cancer and their families to specialist clinicians and researchers.

Role Responsibilities:

Strategy, planning and growth

· Track progress against plans and budgets, and support shop teams to adapt, phase and prioritise work where appropriate.

· Ensure that broad and long-term thinking is brought to decision making and avoid reactionary behaviour, whilst capitalising on arising opportunities.

· Support the delivery of a five-year Retail Strategy (2024 – 2028), to include:

o The professionalisation of our systems and processes to capitalise on all income opportunities.

o Putting a positive customer experience at the heart of our approach.

o Delivering income upwards of £2.5m per annum with year-on-year growth to £10.6m by 2028/29.

o Deliver Gift Aid targets across all shops.

o Assist the Retail Development Manager in launching new shops.

o Utilise digital and social media to drive footfall and stock donations.

o Support fundraising through the shops, including legacy and IG marketing.

o Tailor each shop in the portfolio to maximise the potential of its unique location and its role in the business – including exploration of clearance, vintage, furniture and books.

Sales and Profit

 

• Monitor and be accountable for sales and category performance, as well as ensure that the team are aware of and engaged in the area financial performance
• Foster a creative and entrepreneurial environment where team members seek to maximise income in new and innovative ways both within their shops and through a variety of channels, such as community events
• Drive the team to maximise income from Gift Aid on donated products
• Ensure that all financial procedures are adhered to and executed in a timely fashion by the shop teams

Shop Floor

 

• Ensure sourcing sufficient levels of donated stock locally in collaboration with the shop management and Retail Partnerships team
• Ensure compliance with efficient and commercially successful stock processing systems (such as pricing, quality standards, consumer safety, stock density and culling stock), including backroom systems and ensure these are adhered to by the volunteer team. Ensure that all legal and internal regulations regarding donated stock are adhered to
• Inspire the team to provide a great customer and donor experience, which enables us to attract new supporters every day. Ensure that feedback, including complaints are escalated to the Director of Retail within the agreed timeframes
• Empower the team to work in partnership with the Visual Merchandising Manager to create original, appropriate and commercially successful visual merchandising displays, including shop windows
• Make sure that all procedures for the sale of new and donated corporate products are followed by the volunteer team
• Work with the Director of Retail to ensure our shops are in good condition, maximise their potential and are fit for purpose
• Provide a safe and healthy working environment and ensure that all team members are aware of and operate within our health and safety policies and procedures, including waste management and customer safety

• Support the Volunteer Manager and shop management teams to recruit, induct, and retain an inclusive and diverse volunteer team, which is large enough in numbers and capable to maximise income and profitability and guarantee the smooth running of the area.

This innovative role has been created to respond to recent demands for an integrative approach into support delivery of vulnerable adults presenting a severe and enduring mental illness and/or a forensic background, at times in combination with substance misuse.

The post holder will lead on creating a therapeutically informed programme in order to develop a Psychological Informed Environment in the service.

The role would suit an experienced counsellor/psychotherapist who will lead in facilitating therapeutic groups and individual counselling /therapy for service users. By using their own experiences to help each other and providing a safe space where people feel accepted and understood, Peer Support Workers encourage participants to identify their own strengths, triggers and life goals and support people to develop and use a range of skills and techniques to help their wellbeing.

This is a part-time role for 22.5 hours per week (over three weekdays: Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday working across the New Forest PCN (Lymington/Milford-on-Sea/Lyndhurst).

The aim of Advice Service Supervisor is to maintain a consistent quality of advice and help for clients by providing support, guidance and feedback on a day to day basis. There are 3 main areas:

• ensuring quality - actively supporting the quality of advice by guiding the team to information sources, checking that all aspects of a client's situation have been considered, checking that follow up work is progressed, and that research and campaigns issues are identified
• providing support - actively supporting each team member to develop their skills and competences, by explaining, guiding, demonstrating, encouraging, suggesting, coaching, giving constructive feedback and challenging appropriately - adapting the level of support to individual competence and need, and taking account of the team as a whole
• managing the practicalities - overseeing and managing all practical issues relating to the session - allocating the team to face-to-face work or other communication methods, checking waiting times or interview lengths, and if necessary, dealing with client or Citizens Advice emergencies

Requirements

1. A minimum of 12 months experience of advice work in a Citizens Advice setting or similar quality assured environment.
2. Ability to effectively manage and support people to meet individual and team objectives.
3. Ability to monitor and maintain Quality of Advice standards including checking accuracy of advice and benefit calculations.
4. Good understanding of safeguarding principles and willingness to adhere to them
5. Experience of using ICT systems and packages, and electronic resources in the provision of advice, record keeping and document production.
6. Ability to work on own initiative and be flexible to business need.
7. Demonstrable understanding of the issues affecting society and their implications for Citizens Advice clients and service provision.
8. Ability to create a positive working environment in which equality, diversity and inclusion are well managed, dignity at work is upheld and staff are empowered and motivated to do their best.
9. The ability to commit to and work within the aims, principles and policies of the Citizens Advice service and the vision of Citizens Advice Liverpool
