- significant experience in public affairs, either in-house, for an agency, or having worked in government or Parliament

- the ability to consistently horizon scan, model best practice and learn from success and failure to drive continuous improvement
- experience in line management and developing team performance.
About the role
The Senior External Affairs Manager is responsible for overseeing the NHS Confederation’s strategy for how it engages with central government, parliamentarians, political parties and national stakeholders so that the organisation can effectively influence on behalf of its members.
This post will support the expansion of the organisation’s political and cross-Whitehall connections and its public affairs ambitions following the 2024 UK General Election. The NHS is a major priority for the new government and we will increasing our political engagement on behalf of our members – both nationally and regionally as we respond to the government’s devolution agenda.
This is a rare and exciting opportunity to be influence changes that could be in place for a generation. As such, we are looking for someone with experience in steering Parliamentary discourse, and on engaging constructively with the Government.

As Head of External Communications and Engagement, you will be a key part of a talented and ambitious Communications and Engagement Team. You will play a leading role in implementing our integrated external communications and engagement strategy to enhance our brand reputation, co-deliver highly successful integrated campaigns, drive positive media coverage locally and nationally, and raise awareness and increase engagement with existing and new audiences around our lifesaving work and our five-year strategy – Working Together to Save More Lives. Our aim is to reach as many people as possible to inspire and generate the support we need to continue saving lives every day across Kent, Surrey and Sussex.
You’ll be a highly strategic, self-motivated, organised and creative individual looking to make a real difference to the communities we serve, who values and understands the importance and benefit of highly effective and integrated external communications and engagement to widening our reach, strengthening our profile and building our supporter base. The Communications Team sits within the Marketing and Communications (MarComms) Directorate which builds brand awareness and engagement among the public, builds our profile with the media and key stakeholders, and supports fundraising activities to generate income to keep the service running. The team culture is dynamic, creative, fun, collaborative and supports individual growth, learning and development.
MAIN RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Deliver targeted, engaging and impactful communications to support the successful delivery of KSS’s strategic objectives
- Play a lead role, in collaboration with colleagues in the Income Generation and Marcomms Team, in delivering successful integrated campaigns and support income generation activity including generating key messaging and communications
- Work with the team to develop and deliver our PR and Communications strategy, ensuring excellence in all our activity with consistent brand identity, key messaging, and tone of voice to maximise all opportunities.
- Ensure all other teams are confident and equipped in communicating our brand identity, key messages and tone of voice, and support teams in maximising the impact of their communications
- Lead our in-house press office, supporting an increase in media coverage across print, online and broadcast both locally and nationally. Be able to work to a strategic plan as well as have the flair to spot a story and other PR opportunities to further engage our audiences in our lifesaving work.
- Be an experienced and brilliant copy writer, content planner and event manager
- Have a track record in working with high profile ambassadors, celebrities and influencers
- Be experienced in public affairs and confident in working closely with MPs, other public figures and community leaders.
- Work closely with our Digital Team to ensure an integrated approach to on and offline activity to maximise our reach and impact
- Develop relationships with colleagues across Team KSS, including senior colleagues, offering strategic and tactical communications support
- Ensure a high level of confidentiality is kept on sensitive matters including medical information, press enquiries and patient stories
- Write and deliver strategic documents, in partnership with the Governance Team and Senior Leadership Team
- Manage KSS’s reputation escalating risks and threats to the Director of Communications and Engagement and rest of the MarComms Team
- Evaluate and report –through data-driven evidence – how effectively external communications and PR activity is performing
- Work in a manner that supports a culture that embeds and promotes our values
- Attendance at our fundraising events, which may include weekend work, will be expected. Time off in lieu will be provided for additional hours worked.

New Horizon Youth Centre has been commissioned by the Mayor’s Office for Policing and Crime (MOPAC) as part of an Alliance with Safer London, St Giles Trust and the Anna Freud Centre to deliver on their Children and Young People’s Violence and Exploitation and Reduction support service. The commission will run from June 2024 for three years. As part of this, an additional service will be set up within the NHYC Youth Justice team specifically to deliver on the Alliance contract. This will include a team of Housing Caseworkers who will carry out assessments and advocacy work with young people under 25 who are fleeing violence and exploitation, in order to move them on successfully into both emergency and long-term housing options. You should be passionate about working with this client group, able to manage a fast-moving caseload, and committed to working collaboratively with a team across multiple services.

We are the regulator for the optical professions in the UK. Our purpose is to protect the public by promoting high standards of education, performance and conduct.
About the Hearings Panel
The Hearings Panel’s work relates to our Fitness to Practise functions. The Panel consists of around 70 members, lay (non-registrant) and registrant, from whom members of our Fitness to Practise Committees (FtPCs) and Registration Appeals Committees (RACs) are drawn. As a lay chair member of our Hearings Panel, you will chair either FtPCs or RACs.
You do not have to be a legally qualified individual or have specialist medical knowledge for this role. We are looking for individuals who can chair meetings effectively and impartially, ensure that allegations are considered fairly and independently, and that standards are maintained for registrants and the protection of the public.
A FtPC considers whether a registrant’s fitness to practise is impaired and imposes sanctions if appropriate to do so. This includes considering allegations, hearing evidence, and determining the fitness to practise, train or carry on business of our registrants.
A FtPC also determines whether it is necessary for interim measures (suspension or conditions) to be put in place whilst an investigation is in progress for the protection of members of the public or in the interests of a registrant.
A RAC considers an appeal against a decision by our Registrar to refuse to enter or restore an individual or business to the appropriate register; and applications for restoration by former registrants who have been erased by the FtPC.
We encourage applications from people of all backgrounds with a passion for public protection; and the ability to think critically, listen effectively, consider evidence and to build a consensus.
Remuneration and time commitment
This role requires a commitment of approximately 16-20 days per year, including time spent preparing for meetings. Meetings will usually take place via MS teams, but on occasion may be held at our offices in Central London.
A daily fee of £372 is paid in line with our member fees policy and member fee schedule, and expenses can also be claimed.
