The purpose of the Philanthropy Officer role is to support with the Trust’s approach to building and developing income from philanthropic sources, including Trusts and Foundations, organisational donors, and individuals, as well as supporting the effective stewardship of our family of supporters. We are setting ambitious fundraising targets to substantially increase income for the next phase of our 2030 strategy to grow activity across the organisation and support the widest cohort of beneficiaries possible.
The Development team has secured a relatively stable income of c.£6M of income over a number of years. 22/23 was our strongest year yet with an income of £6.8M and pledges of £12.8M, and we look set to exceed this in 23/24. Philanthropy revenue accounted for just less than half of the income in 22/23 and we believe there is potential for much more as the philanthropic community continues to invest in social mobility and unlocking young people’s potential to create a fairer society where everyone can succeed no matter their background.
The Philanthropy Officer will work on a key income stream for the Sutton Trust, developing a robust pipeline of Trust and Foundation prospects and delivering high-quality account management to a portfolio of small to mid-level Trusts, Foundations, and organisational donors. The scope of the role will also include supporting the Head of Philanthropy on strategic management of our major Trust and Foundation partners and the Philanthropy function’s overall fundraising operations.
Main duties
Account Management and Individual Giving Support
- Managing a portfolio of small to mid-level Trusts, Foundations, and organisational donors, delivering impactful stewardship (e.g. programme visits, impact reporting) to meet all reporting requirements.
- Supporting the Head of Philanthropy on strategic management of our major Trust and Foundation partners, including administrative activities and data collation for reporting.
- Assisting with information gathering and writing inspiring, compelling reports and proposals to Philanthropy funders, as well as targeted donor communications.
- Working closely with the Director of Development to project manage the annual donor impact report, coordinating departmental submissions from the Senior Leadership team and working with our design agency to create a professional external report of the highest standard, in a timely manner.
- Providing general administrative support to the Philanthropy team and Director of Development, such as arranging meetings, note-taking, supporting with gift fulfilment, processing expenses, preparing gift receipts.
- Supporting the Philanthropy Manager and Head of Philanthropy on administration and maintenance of low-level online giving campaigns, including automated stewardship activation (i.e. once gifts are received, ensuring supporters are thanked appropriately and understand the impact of their support for the Trust to encourage repeat support).
- Managing the Trust’s online fundraising platforms such as JustGiving and CAF US/ Canada to enable smooth processes while ensuring new and existing regular donors are appropriately thanked and have inclination to support in the future.
- Work with colleagues across Development to support the transition of our online giving capabilities to the Trust’s website and the implementation of a low-level regular giving strategy.
New Business and Grants Fundraising
- Conducting thorough prospect research into prospective and current donors (including trusts and foundations and statutory i.e. Government contracts or grants) and supporting the team to develop a pipeline of opportunities and proposals that are attractive to the Trust’s prospects.
- Developing long-term relationships with small to mid-level Trusts, Foundations and organisational donors to secure income (£5k - £50k), for the Trust.
Fundraising Finance and Reporting
- Ensure appropriate recording and monitoring of Philanthropy relationships through Salesforce, ensuring private data is managed confidentially in line with GDPR and Data Protection Guidelines.
- Act as an ambassador for the Trust at external events, primarily with current and prospective supporters.
- Work with colleagues across Development and Finance to ensure accurate forecasting, income tracking and reporting for Philanthropic partnerships.
- Work closely with the Development team on due diligence, donor stewardship and reporting, including creating account plans.
- Stay up to date with fundraising best practice.
- Other duties as necessary from time to time.
Person Specification
We welcome applications from individuals who have experience in:
- Experience building and managing relationships to achieve a project or other goals.
- Experience managing multiple priorities and tasks to successfully achieve project or other goals.
- Excellent research skills.
- Experience presenting, writing compelling proposals, or pitching to audiences with the intent to persuade them to your point of view or secure a specific outcome.
- Knowledge of fundraising in the education and/or not-for-profit sector or can demonstrate relevant experience of philanthropy account/relationship management (desirable)
- Experience of grant fundraising, including securing and managing relationships and donations (desirable).
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills and the ability to summarise information from readily available sources clearly and concisely.
- First-class interpersonal skills - a natural ambassador able to represent the Sutton Trust in a range of settings.
- Experience using CRM software (ideally Salesforce) to record funding relationships (desirable).

Terms of Appointment

Role Requirements
Site wide general housekeeping service – ensure that the housekeeping services is of an acceptable level and is consistent across site.
- Carry out a cleaning service in allocated buildings/rooms/areas ensuring that daily tasks are completed according to the standard operating procedures in relation to the cleanliness/hygiene standards.
- Follow infection control procedures whenever carrying out duties and ensure procedures are followed should there be an infection control outbreak.
- Liaise with the Housekeeping Supervisor and House Staff on a daily basis – carrying out special requests in relation to Housekeeping.
- Ensure safe storage of cleaning materials and equipment and sufficient stock is maintained – informing the Housekeeping Supervisor of stock requiring ordering.
- Assist in the cleaning of communal areas on a daily basis and cleaning of carpets, curtains and high dusting on a rotating schedule.
- Ensure that any repairs required to fixtures and fittings are reported to the designated Facilities Helpdesk as soon as possible and any issues are reported to the Housekeeping Supervisor.
- Assist in routine housekeeping audits as outlined in the planned preventative maintenance (PPM) schedules and ensure any works are to agreed service levels.
- Prioritise work to complete assignments in a timely manner.
- Assist other members of the Site Services and Facilities teams as required.
- Undertake other or additional duties that are within your skills and abilities, as the organisation may reasonably require from time to time.

The Associate Director for HR Operations is an exciting and new role at the College in which you will work collaboratively with all Divisions to support a range of operational and strategic HR activities, as well as embracing and contributing to College wide projects and the enhancement of the People & Culture Division.
Reporting directly to the Executive Director for People and Culture, you will take ownership for reviewing and developing policies and processes, alongside establishing innovative approaches to ER issues, change management, managing the recruitment of key hires and championing the EDI agenda.
As Associate Director for HR Operations, you will provide enthusiastic leadership, direction and development to the HR team involved in employee relations, encouraging proactive ER interventions to ensure the increased productivity and efficiency of the College.

MCIPD qualified and with a bachelor’s degree in Human Resources, you should have extensive knowledge of employment laws and regulations as well as proven experience of working in a trade unionised environment.
You should have a strong strategic mindset with the ability to align HR strategies with business objectives, as well as a proven ability to use management information to drive activity to improve organisational performance. You will also be responsible for maintaining and improving the College’s HRIS.
Strong leadership and managerial skills along with the ability to effectively coach and mentor a team are essential, as are excellent organisational, interpersonal and communication skills.
It is also essential for you to be able to build and maintain strong relationships with employees, managers and stakeholders. Experience of working in a membership organisation would be desirable.
The HR Operations team is responsible for developing initiatives and tools to support the achievement of RCPCH’s strategic objectives. This is a very exciting time to join our expanding Visiting Caseworker Service. We are seeking two new colleagues, who will join our current team of two caseworkers covering the UK and Ireland. These newly created positions will be regionally based, one covering South West England & South Wales, and the other North West England & North Wales (with other travel across the UK on occasion).
Visiting Caseworkers each deal with an approximate caseload of 70-100 cases / visits per year. Central to the role will be supporting and advocating on behalf of vulnerable applicants, or those who are living in particularly complex or challenging situations. The job will be wide-ranging and include elements of advocacy, support, income maximisation, mediation, partnership working and processing our own grants where appropriate, with the overall aim to reach long-term sustainable solutions for Anglican clergy households.
Working closely with the Visiting Caseworker Manager and the wider Charitable Services team, key responsibilities will include:
Receive referrals from applicants via the Grants & Services team, for potential casework and home visits
- Assess and prioritise urgent cases on a weekly basis.
Conduct home visit (or online meeting)
- Provide thorough assessment of current situation, taking into consideration time available and wellbeing of the applicant.
- Conduct general income maximisation check (welfare benefits, grants check etc), where necessary.
- Identify, discuss and escalate (to Designated Safeguarding Officer) any safeguarding concerns within the household.
- Gather information in order to create individualised action plans with the primary contact and other household members.

Develop an action plan
- Complete a written summary of the meeting and draft an action plan for possible areas of help and support with allocated responsibilities and agreed timelines.

- Liaise with other agencies (e.g., DWP, Social Services, NHS, other charities, voluntary organisations, occupational benevolent funds, Dioceses, CofE Pensions Board etc.) where necessary.

- Research and identify any local organisations for longer-term support.
- Consider and recommend most appropriate grant support through our own internal grants programme.

The groups are an informal, fun, confidential space where young people can meet and chat, participate in feel good activities and receive helpful information and tools. There are two groups a week, one on Thursdays in Tunbridge Wells between 4.30pm – 6pm and another in a community venue or a school in Tunbridge Wells or Tonbridge, details to be confirmed.
You will have experience of working with young people, and the ability to facilitate groups, plan and deliver creative activities that engage young people and encourage participation. You will have excellent communication and administration skills. We are looking for someone energetic, positive, warm and welcoming, who is able to deal with challenging situations with confidence.

• Understanding of the requirements of legislation, Charity Commission and professional body guidance on being a well-run and financially accountable Charity – or an ability to familiarise themselves with charitable law.

• Experience of the charity or not-for-profit environment (this could be gained as a trustee) preferably with some understanding of charity funding and investment management.
