The role
We’re seeking a Volunteering and Participation Coordinator to join our fantastic Volunteering and Participation team!
As our organisation grows we want to ensure we are consistently providing a great experience for volunteers and lived experience participants, right through from recruitment and onboarding, to providing support and enabling them to be ambassadors for the charity once they move on.
We have brought the areas of volunteering and participation of people with lived experience in our work, together in this role and team. We see these areas as having some points of distinctions, and also that many of the approaches and policies underpinning them are the same. We want to prioritise the same enabling and impactful approach, which values diversity, in both.
PCUK has made a commitment to diversifying and building the participation of people with lived experience across all levels of our work. We already do lots of great things, but we are committed to doing more and to ensuring that people with lived experience are regularly involved from the start in shaping projects and working alongside staff with learnt experience and in meaningful ways.
We are a new team and you will work closely with the Volunteering and Participation Manager to introduce new processes and resources, and the People and Culture Administrator who handles volunteer and participation enquiries. This is an exciting time to join, with lots of opportunity to grow the diversity of the volunteers and participants involved, as well as the range of opportunities they are involved with. You will recruit and onboard volunteers and participants directly and create new ways to keep them engaged and updated with the charities work and further opportunities. As well as work with colleagues across different teams to develop new roles and opportunities for volunteers and participants.
We particularly welcome applications from candidates who consider themselves to be from backgrounds which are under-represented in the charity sector.
This is a part time role (17.5 hours per week) which can be worked across 3 or 4 days, working from home and from our office in central London. There will be the opportunity to discuss working hours and hybrid working at interview and we can be flexible according to your preferences, as long as the needs of the role are met.
About You
We are looking for someone who
- Is passionate about making a difference for volunteers and those affected by Pancreatic Cancer who want to participate in our work and supporting them to have a positive experience
- Has experience of either developing and/or supporting volunteering or participation programmes and is keen to develop their knowledge in the area (volunteering or participation) they have less experience in.
- Is excited by the opportunity to find new ways to engage different people with our volunteering and participation opportunities and to welcome and support them in an inclusive way.
If this sounds like you – we’d love to hear from you!
About Working for Us
This is a fast-paced and growing organisation that is really committed to making a difference. Being a part of our team is being part of a thriving, positive, dynamic, successful, and welcoming community that is making an impact. We will support you and develop you should you wish this, and you get the opportunity to be involved in activities outside the scope of your immediate role. We care about your health and well-being and your work-life balance, and you will feel that your contribution is valued and matters.
About Us
Pancreatic cancer is a tough one but we're taking it on. It is tough to diagnose, tough to treat, and tough to research. For too long this disease has been side-lined. We want to make sure that everyone affected by it gets all the help they need. Together we are taking on pancreatic cancer. Underpinning this vision are our three values:
- Courageous
- Collaborative
- Compassionate
We cannot achieve our vision without employing people who are committed to our vision, strategy, and values.
At PCUK our ambition is to create an inclusive working environment that reflects the communities and audiences that we engage with and where everyone can be their true selves, where they feel respected, championed, heard, and supported. We want our workforce to achieve their potential, understand their contribution and feel proud of their impact by creating a culture and organisation that is genuinely inclusive by advancing equality, diversity, inclusion, and belonging through our policies and practices.
We believe diversity drives great outcomes by encouraging the different points of view that come from a diverse workforce. We want to hear from and engage with people whose experience of dealing with this disease may be very different depending on their individual circumstances and background can think of no better way to do this than by ensuring that this role fully represents our intent therefore we are especially keen to consider applications from suitable applicants who consider themselves to be in areas that appear underrepresented within the charity sector.
How to apply
- You can download the Job Description and Person Specification for full details of the role. If you have any questions about this role that we’ve not answered, please get in touch with us.

Are you a highly organised, creative problem solver who is passionate about improving the experience of students from disadvantaged backgrounds?
Do you have strong project and stakeholder management skills, and exceptional verbal and written communication capabilities?
If so, we would love to hear from you!
The Access & Participation Project Coordinator is a brand new, exciting role designed to support LSESU’s work around access and participation.
The successful candidate will play a lead role in identifying areas where there is a need/opportunity for targeted interventions to support the experiences of students from disadvantaged backgrounds, before putting then translating these into evidence-based proposals.
The Access & Participation Project Coordinator will be responsible for designing, implementing and delivering these programmes, as well as for reporting back on them and proactively seeking ways of driving continuous improvement.
The role will also oversee the delivery of the Black and Minority Ethnic (BME) Mentoring Scheme. This landmark programme, that was last year nominated at the National Diversity Awards, pairs students from ethnic minority backgrounds with LSE alumni, who provide the former with mentoring and support during their studies.
The successful person will be responsible for reviewing the programme and seeking to build upon its fledgling success to ensure it is bigger, better and more impactful than ever.
This role will also involve close working with stakeholders at LSE, especially those working on the delivery of LSE’s Access & Participation Plan (APP).
You would be joining a fantastic and friendly Advice Team, consisting of the Advice Caseworker and Advice Manager, that sits within the wider Student Voice Department, and which together oversees all of the Union’s advice, policy, democratic, campaigning and representation work.
Given the breadth of work undertaken within the department, expect there to be plenty of opportunities to grow, develop and pick up new skills outside of the main responsibilities of the role.
Who are we looking for?
The successful applicant will be a creative problem solver who is passionate about issues of social justice and committed to improving the experience of those from marginalised backgrounds.
The role will require finding opportunities for supporting disadvantaged student groups and then designing, implementing and delivering projects and activities. As a result, we are looking for someone who is highly organised, confident, self-sufficient, and able to deliver at pace, managing multiple competing priorities with enthusiasm and a ‘can do’ attitude.
Project management, stakeholder management and communication skills (both verbal and written) are considered essential, as is the ability to undertake research, policy, and monitoring & evaluation work.
However, we believe that what you do is just as important as how you do it. We are a hardworking but friendly and welcoming team, and so are looking for someone a genuine team-player. You will be a kind, positive and supportive individual who looks out for their colleagues and isn’t afraid to muck in to help those in need.
We particularly welcome applications from candidates who self-identify as coming from a disadvantaged or marginalised background.
People with prior experience of working in a students’ union and/or with knowledge of access and participation issues within Higher Education are encouraged to apply, although such experience is not considered essential.
Sabbatical officers with relevant, transferrable skills are also encouraged to apply.
If any of this sounds like you, we’d love to hear from you!
Why apply?
Because you’re excited by the challenge! The exact opposite of corporate, we’re progressive, daring and creative individuals working to make a difference in unconventional workplaces.
Benefits and Perks
In return for your passion and experience we offer:
- 25 days of holiday per year (pro rata)
- Additional closure periods at Christmas and Easter
- Free LSE Students’ Union gym membership (including advice from dedicated professionals)
- Cycle to Work scheme enabling significant savings on bicycle purchase
- Access to LSE staff training courses
- Ability to purchase TOTUM (NUS) card, which provides a wide range of discounts

- Interest-free travel loan
How to apply?
We want to ensure all systems, policies and processes are free from bias or discrimination and are fair and accessible, therefore we ask that all candidates complete our Application Process by uploading the two following documents:
- Part 1: Supporting Statement is all about you telling us about your suitability for the role and will be used to determine if you are shortlisted for interview. Please keep this one page maximum and do not include any personal information, e.g. name or date of birth. Please use the attached job description and person specification to help with this.
- Part 2: Equal Opportunities Monitoring and Contact Form is personal information – so we can contact you if you are shortlisted for the interview. It also helps us gather and analyse demographic information about our applicants. This part will only be seen by HR and will not have any impact on shortlisting.
- Part 3: CV - Please attach your completed CV outlining the jobs or voluntary roles you have had.
To apply for this role, please complete an online application.
Application forms are formatted to ensure the equality monitoring data is removed before applications are seen by the shortlisting panel. For further information regarding the role, please see attached the full job description and person specification.
Compulsory Requirement - The UK Government sets the legal regulations that we are required to follow. The UK’s public services are in acute crisis. Political trust is on the floor. The struggles people and communities face are many, and are deeply knitted together. Consequently, our mental health is often poor, and our resilience is weakened. We must be prepared to unravel and reweave for the common good.
That requires working together in new ways, empowering radical acts of co-creation across communities, sectors and boundaries. For The Young Foundation, this is a moment to embody the spirit of our founder, Michael Young. To embrace collective effort and work collaboratively to show that, with the Power of Participation, we can redesign the social contract between people, communities, state and business to shape a fairer, greener future.
