The Council for At-Risk Academics is a UK-registered charity founded in 1933 under the leadership of William Beveridge, to rescue academics suffering persecution under the rise of Nazism and facilitate their continued work in safety. Sixteen Cara Fellows from the 1930s and 1940s became Nobel Laureates, and many more innovators in their fields, including, Nikolaus Pevsner, Lise Meitner and Karl Popper. A number of Cara’s founders and Council members also personally provided places and/or funds to help individual academics; and Cara, known in the 1930s as the AAC, later the SPSL, was closely involved in the successful effort in 1933 to bring to London the Warburg Institute art library, which had been prohibited by the Nazis, and six of its staff. Cara support is typically framed as temporary sanctuary offered at times of heightened risk.
Cara Objectives ‘To assist academics who have been, or are, or are at risk of being, subject to discrimination, persecution, suffering or violence on account of race, religion, nationality, membership of a particular social group, or political opinion, to relieve needs among them and their dependants and ensure that their specialist knowledge and abilities can continue to be used for the benefit of the public.’
‘To advance education by supporting academics and their educational institutions in countries where their continuing work is at risk or compromised, to ensure that such academics and institutions can continue to fulfil their critical role as educators for the public benefit.’

Hybrid working, with primary location at our London office
This is an exciting time for the WI, as we are planning the next stages of our strategy and building on our strategic vision launched in 2020 – to be bold and inspiring, growing and relevant, flexible and inclusive. We are proud to say that we continue to be the largest and most influential UK-based women’s organisation, with over 180,000 members. Our campaigns push for change on the issues that matter to women and their communities, and we have been a powerful voice throughout our 108-year history on issues from equal pay for women to protecting the environment from pollution. Today we continue to support and empower women to campaign to tackle climate change, for more awareness of mental health and to end violence against women. The WI has a track record of achieving real change on a huge range of issues, and this record of action shows that we are as relevant today as we were in 1915 when we began.
The National Federation of Women’s Institutes (the NFWI) is responsible for running the organisation and provides support and advice to members at both regional and local levels. The NFWI also works with the Denman Trust to fulfil its charitable objectives and implement a comprehensive educational programme of courses and activities, both online and in person, to WI members and non-members.

At the same time, you will actively develop the team across WI Enterprises, draft the annual business plan and budget, and set clear and ambitious performance targets before ensuring their attainment. Above all, you will foster a culture of innovation and high achievement, where every colleague is focused on results and has the skills to make things happen.
About you
Experienced in managing sales teams and leading commercial operations, you will combine a track record within the publishing or editorial sector with innate flair for negotiating contracts and agreements. You will need to be adept at creating budgets and business plans, skilled in identifying and pursuing successful revenue streams, and familiar with using data to inform strategic decision-making. Confident reporting and presenting at Board level, as well as networking and engaging with stakeholders at all levels, you will have a demonstratable understanding of marketing and fundraising within the charity sector.

Hackney Here To Help (formerly known as Hackney Money Hub) is an easily accessible, resident-facing, multi-disciplinary service that brings together benefits advice with assessment for a range of discretionary grants, in a delivery model that has data-led, active community outreach at its heart.
One of our core goals is increasing residents’ income by tackling benefits under-claiming in the borough. For 2025, we will be focussing our work on supporting residents in temporary accommodation or who need homelessness support.
The Outreach Team is one of four teams within Here To Help. Rather than requiring residents to come to us, we work with community organisations to do outreach work in different settings. As an Outreach Officer, you will go to these places every week and provide advice and support to residents on how Hackney Here To Help can help them.
You will report to the Income Maximisation Lead.
Two Outreach Worker posts are available. One post needs to be full time but there is scope for the other post to be offered on a part time basis.
Key accountabilities
A main area of work will be to complete benefits checks with residents, identified through outreach work and through inbound work, and identify under-claiming. You will be delivering a mix of:
· Community-based outreach work, running and attending events at a range of venues.
· Assessing in-coming applications for advice
· Phone-based data led uptake campaigns
In order to be successful in this role you will be able to work in a holistic, and empathetic way, to overcome mistrust in council services, stigma and ignorance around benefits. You will use your professional curiosity to explore unmet needs. You will also be able to work collaboratively with colleagues to ensure a wide range of needs are met.
Skills and Experience
· Be comfortable working directly with residents and taking a holistic, empathetic approach
· Understand eligibility and help apply residents apply for the relevant benefits
· Able to navigate relevant systems including Academy, Comino, Jigsaw and LIFT
· Comfortable working with community partners to deliver joined-up support for residents
· Able to be flexible, work independently and take a problem-solving approach when working with residents and on different types of cases
