Communications Officer

We’re looking for a brilliant, proactive and resourceful Communications officer who is passionate about raising awareness and support for a leading working animal charity. We are looking for someone resourceful, tenacious and empathetic, who can pro-actively deliver and support communications and campaigns projects and activities, ranging from press releases and digital content to publications and media content. You should be creative and passionate about delivering impactful work, with a proven ability to be highly organised and manage your own workload.

The opportunity

The Society for the Protection of Animals Abroad (SPANA) is the charity for the working animals of the world. Since 1923, working through a series of global projects and partnerships across 23 low-income countries, SPANA has supported the welfare of working donkeys, horses, camels, oxen and other working animals in communities that depend on them for water, transport, agriculture, and their very survival. 

As part of the charity’s ambitious strategic development plans, SPANA is recruiting a Communications Officer. In this role, you will proactively develop and drive work to generate awareness and support for SPANA, and ensure working animals are represented in the global news agenda.

Your key responsibilities include:

Media and PR

• Deliver local, national and international PR (both online and offline), supporting awareness-raising, global programmes, emergency, fundraising and advocacy activities and campaigns. 
• Implement media plans in line with the global fundraising, marketing and communications strategy and in support of communications KPIs. 
• Organise PR engagements and activities for media and other stakeholders as required.
• Produce and distribute press releases, articles, statements, case studies, Q&A sheets, position statements, briefings, press packs and other media materials.
• Identify opportunities for, and support the development of, appropriate content (video, imagery etc) for media release.
• Oversee the production of video news releases or other content for broadcasters and digital media, assisting and supporting the content team in editing footage.

Communications and campaigns

• Work with the Communications and Campaigns team and colleagues to plan and implement strategic communications designed to grow awareness and understanding of the charity’s work and support income generation activities. 
• Work with Global Programmes staff to identify and realise potential stories of geopolitical importance (e.g. conflict and security, climate, food security, gender issues). 
• Work with the Global Programmes team to realise opportunities arising from advocacy work. 
   

Brand and content

• Write copy for SPANA publications, marketing materials and digital channels, such as the website and social media. 
• Work with the Senior Content Officer, in-country teams and freelancers, to develop, catalogue and select content (photography, video, case studies).
• Oversee the production of promotional materials as required. 
• Proof copy and review materials against brand guidelines on behalf of staff from across the charity. 

 
Other 

• Stay up to date with the latest developments in PR and communications.
• Contribute to SPANA content on third-party sites (e.g. Wikipedia).
• Monitor sector activity and advise key staff of relevant developments.
• Work as part of a team, supporting each other to achieve deadlines and team goals. 
• Uphold and promote SPANA’s values.
   

Your knowledge:

• Educated to degree level or equivalent or with comparable press, journalistic or communications on-the-job experience. 
• Knowledge of charity/not-for-profit communications.
• Excellent knowledge of the UK media environment, including print, broadcast and digital.
• An understanding international development issues, the importance of working animals and livestock in that context, and the international agencies and NGOs working in this field
• Professional qualifications and training in communications or journalism (desirable). 

Your experience: 

• Experience of working in a busy press or communications environment, including interacting with national media.
• Expertise in managing both reactive and proactive media relations.
• An experienced writer, with the ability to produce engaging, persuasive copy that is tailored to the needs of particular audiences.
• Experience of digital communications, including writing for the web.
• Experience of media contacts databases, such as Gorkana/Cision.
• Experience of working with content management systems (desirable).
• Experience of promoting income-generation activities (desirable).
• Experience of project management and delivering projects on budget and within deadline.

This newly created position will become part of the Public Fundraising team and will develop and implement a legacy fundraising programme that will allow the charity to realise the great untapped potential of gifts in wills for the Charity. • Developing and driving forward an engaging and inspiring programme of activity that will increase numbers of legacy enquirers and pledgers from existing and new supporters.
• Project managing legacy fundraising activities, including creative development, briefing and managing external suppliers, briefing data selections and assessing results.

JOB DESCRIPTION

1.Main purpose of role

To develop The Family Centre Deaf Children’s (FCDC) fundraising channels and secure income from grant funders and individual donors in order to sustain and develop the charity’s services and infrastructure, building strong relationships with key stakeholders and contributing to FCDC's overall strategic development, aims and operations.

The Development Officer is responsible for overseeing the development and implementation of our Fundraising Strategy 2024-2029 to support the charity’s continuous improvement, financial sustainability and future growth.

The post holder will be responsible for inspiring individual donations to the charity through local giving initiatives and further developing the charity’s existing income channels including:

· Community and events fundraising

· Individual giving

· Grants from Trusts and Foundations and other relevant grant income sources.

2.Duties and Responsibilities

2.1 General

· To champion FCDC’s vision, mission, ethos and values (internally and externally).

· To comply with all relevant charity and other legislation.

· To uphold and contribute to the updating of FCDC’s internal policies and codes of conduct.

· To contribute towards the delivery of the charity’s strategic, operational, and departmental plans.

· To develop and maintain good working relationships with FCDC staff members, Trustees, service users, volunteers and other key internal and external stakeholders.

2.2 Income generation from individuals

· Sustain and grow FCDC’s individual donor base and community fundraising in line with agreed income targets.

· Research and identify potential major donors.

· Work alongside the Centre Manager and Board of Trustees to develop relationships with potential donors.

· Work alongside FCDC’s Fundraising Working Group, Centre Manager and Events and Family Development Officer to develop and coordinate an annual calendar of community fundraising events.

· Develop local individual giving campaigns and social media appeals to secure individual donations.

· Ensure all fundraising activity is in keeping with the Fundraising Regulator’s Code of Fundraising Practice and is compliant with fundraising regulations.

· Ensure all fundraising activity is in keeping with FCDC’s mission, values, ethos and objectives.

· Ensure Gift Aid is claimed on all eligible donations and appropriate Gift Aid records are kept.

· Ensure our email opt-in and supporter subscriber lists are kept up to date.

2.3 Income generation from Trusts, Foundations and Statutory Agencies

· Maximise income from grant-giving organisations to ensure sustainable growth of restricted and unrestricted income in line with agreed income targets.

· Build and manage relationships with Trusts and Foundations to secure grants of £5,000 or more.

· Research, contact, correspond and meet with funders (as and when required) to build relationships prior to submitting funding applications.

· Collaborate with the FCDC team across the organisation to create compelling fundraising proposals and produce high-quality applications, reports and budgets.

· To assume responsibility for a portfolio of current and potential grant funders to maintain, grow and/or revive their support for the charity.

· Develop a robust pipeline of charitable Trusts and Foundations to support FCDC’s services and activities.

· Maintain relationships with funders between applications to nurture positive relationships between them and FCDC.

· Work alongside the Centre Manager and Board of Trustees to develop partnerships and positive working relationships with current and potential grant funders.

2.4 Donor engagement and stewardship

· Working closely with FCDC’s Centre Manager and the Chair to develop a donor journey that encourages long term support from individuals.

· Process individual donations, including: recording donations, thanking supporters in a timely fashion and responding to ad hoc supporter queries.

· Contribute to and proofread fundraising appeals, marketing materials and FCDC digital content.

· Support existing and new supporters of the charity in their initiatives to raise funds for FCDC.

2.5 Funder and donor data management

· Ensure that all funders and individual donor contacts and activity are accurately recorded on our funder and donor database.

· Work alongside the Centre Manager to ensure that all personal data is gathered, held, and used in-line with relevant data protection regulations and FCDC’s Data Protection Policy.

· Accurately record Trusts, Foundations and other grant income data on FCDC’s financial ICT system.

· Compile and submit timely funder reports, working alongside the Centre Manager in checking monitoring data, proofreading reports and ensuring reports are uploaded to funder portals, as and when required.

2.6 Fundraising Strategy 2024-2029

· Oversee the development, implementation and monitoring of FCDC’s Fundraising Strategy 2024-2029, with specific focus on individual giving, community fundraising and Trusts and Foundations.

· Support the Chair and Centre Manager to set up a new Fundraising and Events Working Group (consisting of volunteers, service users, Trustees and staff), who will support and act as a sounding board for new fundraising initiatives and open doors to new income streams.

· Keep up-to-date with fundraising trends, opportunities and best practice and recommend changes in our funding strategies and annual fundraising action plans.

· Maximise income from new fundraising opportunities as and when they arise in the course of our work. For example: local sports group donations and company payroll giving.

2.7 Reporting

· Regularly report on fundraising outputs, outcomes and the impact of fundraising initiatives to staff, the Chair and the Board of Trustees.

· Contribute to funder monitoring activities and evaluation reports to ensure that FCDC meets its reporting obligations to funders.

2.8 Other

· Contribute to FCDC’s positive working culture, strategic direction and the future growth of FCDC by participating in team meetings, supporting other staff in their work and contributing ideas and feedback across the organisation.

· Ensure that key stakeholder enquiries, contact details and other relevant records are maintained and kept up-to-date.

· Undertake other reasonable duties and responsibilities which the Chair may request from time to time.

· Actively participate in the staff appraisal scheme and be committed to learning and development in line with the Charity’s aims and objectives.

· Manage and liaise with volunteers, service users and other stakeholders as necessary.

The Role
Reporting into the CEO to lead and deliver fundirasing actvities across the Kent locality.

About You

About the role

This is an exciting opportunity to join Sustrans Cymru. We are looking for an Engineer, to support in the delivery of our innovative programme of people-focused street and route design.

As a transport charity, the focus of the work will be the integration of Placemaking as an integral part of Active Travel infrastructure projects. The principle objective of these projects will be to encourage higher levels of walking and cycling and the creation of equitable and accessible environments for all. 

You will be part of a multi-disciplinary design and engineering team, working closely with partners including the Welsh Government, Transport for Wales, Welsh Local Authorities and diverse communities across Wales.

This role will require travel and work at locations as necessary to undertake projects on behalf of Sustrans.

About you

You should have experience of project management of small defined projects relating to the design of the built environment.

A degree in Civil Engineering, Urban Design, Architecture, Town Planning, Traffic/Highways Engineering, Landscape Architecture or other degree related to the built environment (or other equivalent experience).

Experience in the production of technical drawings and specifications using design software, as well as experience of supervising and mentoring colleagues.

You will have a knowledge of inclusive design: understanding the relationship between streets and social justice and an ability to develop creative design engagement exercises suitable for a variety of audiences including school children.
