About the role

The Science Council is looking for two people to help it raise the profile and prestige of science-based apprenticeships and increase the status of scientific technicians through professional registration.

The Science Council has delivered the groundbreaking Technical Pathways project since 2020 and has recently secured continued funding from the Gatsby Foundation to the end of 2026. A key objective of the project is to make it easier for apprentices to achieve professional registration and raise the profile of science apprenticeships.

Summary of role and key benefits

Two positions are available, each of 0.4 FTE (2 days/week equivalent). The working pattern will be discussed and agreed with the successful candidates. Flexible working and secondments will be considered.

- Fixed-term contract until 31 December 2026.
- Salary £47,000 pro rata (i.e. £18,800 for 2 days/week).
- 5% employer pension contribution.
- 25 days annual leave and public holidays pro rata (i.e. paid leave of 70 + 22.4 hours per annum) plus Science Council closure days between Christmas and New Year in addition to pro rata leave.

Your role

You will contribute to an increase in the uptake of science-based apprenticeships across the UK by linking apprenticeships to professional body membership and professional registration. You will work closely and effectively with a wide range of stakeholders, including scientific professional bodies, apprenticeship training providers, endpoint assessment organisations and science-based employers.

You will spend much of your time meeting people (in person and online). You will need to establish and develop a broad range of relationships, often with senior leaders and decision makers. You will be a credible, diplomatic and engaging external contact for the Technical Pathways project and the Science Council. Who we’re looking for

Most of all, we’re interested in hearing from people with a commitment to technical education and the access it provides to the scientific professions, particularly for people from under-represented groups. You should have direct experience of supporting apprenticeships, either in a training provider, endpoint assessment organisation, science-based employer or a professional body. You should understand the mechanisms and requirements of apprenticeships. This will give you the credibility to form effective relationships with the groups you’ll be working with.

You should also have a reasonably good understanding of the wider landscape of technical education, including recent policy trends, and of scientific professional bodies and professional registration.

We’re looking for experienced candidates who can work with a significant degree of autonomy. While you’ll get plenty of support from the Science Council team, you’ll need to take the initiative in both addressing unforeseen challenges and setting day-to-day tasks to achieve your goals.

• Experience of ensuring the training and guidance is in place for the team to successfully deliver all elements of the Into Film programmes (including but not limited to training/CPD, events, conferences relationship management).

• Excellent communication and collaboration skills in all mediums and experience of being an advocate for Into Film at events/conferences etc.

• Understanding and experience of what young people, teachers, schools and those working in the realm of careers need to be able to participate and benefit from Into Film’s UK wide programmes including the educational backdrop and context of schools in Scotland. 
• Experience and understanding of monitoring and evaluation as well as managing feedback and advocacy loops via our Education Ambassadors, Youth Advisory Council and Expert Panels.
• Knowledge and experience of fundraising and how using key local knowledge and desk-based research is effective in success. 
• Understanding of CRM reporting, dashboards and data analysis to inform programme delivery.  
• Work on fundraising proposals as appropriate.

Chief Executive Officer (CEO) 

Salary - £50,000-£60,000 based on experience 

Dudley Canal and Tunnel Trust (DCTT) are looking for a committed and highly motivated CEO, who is confident and excited about leading an ambitious and award-winning Charitable Trust and Cultural Heritage attraction. We have been in operation over 60 years, caring for and engaging the public with ancient scheduled monuments and industrial heritage, waterways and mines, by offering educational and entertaining guided boat trips underground below the heart of Dudley.

In recent years we have expanded our offer to include catering, retail, and special events, as well as offering a range of local community initiatives and events to ensure everyone can engage with our unique underground site and offer. 

Our organisation is supported by a dedicated team of staff and trustees. We also work closely with neighbouring attractions, stakeholders, and partners such as Canal & River Trust and Dudley Metropolitan Borough Council, as well as tourism and destination marketing organisations. 

You will be driven by a desire to work with our team, partners, and trustees to ensure the success of the charity, as well as develop its forward-looking plans and activities to ensure its ongoing sustainability and development. 

Responsibilities 

• Strategic Leadership: Providing visionary leadership and direction for the charity. 

• Team Management: Motivating and leading the staff to achieve our mission and objectives. 

• Financial Management: Forecasting and monitoring financial activities, and seeking funding opportunities. 

• Legislation Compliance: Ensuring compliance with numerous external body requirements. 

• Board Support: Supporting and working with the volunteer board of Trustees. 

• Representation: Acting as the primary spokesperson for DCTT to supporters, partners, and industry specialists and organisations. 

• Guardianship: Ensuring the care and conservation of assets and the Ancient Scheduled Monuments, which are part of the UNESCO Black Country Geo Park. 

• Networking: Liaising with and representing our charity and attraction within regional and wider networks, making connections and forging collaborations with a range of supporters, funders and advocates for DCTT. 

Person Specification 

The successful candidate should have the following attributes & skills: 

A proven track record of leadership, in an organisation with a turnover around £1 million.

Experience of working with a volunteer Board.

Experience of business objective delivery.

Experience of team management.

Expertise in developing and managing budgets.

Experience of developing and monitoring Key Performance Indicators.

Exceptional communication and advocacy skills.

Familiarity with charity governance, charity law, company legislation and health & safety.

Ability to think creatively and be a sound problem solver.

Demonstrate sound judgement, in strategy, leadership and management.

The ability to control personal time management and to effectively delegate.

The role is full time, 37.5 hrs per week, primarily office based in Dudley with the option for occasional work from home and flexible working as required, which will include some weekends, evenings and bank holidays.

About the Role

This role will support the new Youth Zone projects with the full recruitment and onboarding life cycle.
