Across the UK, our 60+ local branches help disabled people live the lives they choose. Our network of skilled volunteers respond to thousands of requests each year to design and make customised equipment free of charge.

Our Engineer/Maker volunteers are at the very heart of what our local branches do. They use their practical skills and creativity to help people with disabilities live fuller and more independent lives.

What the role involves

This is a varied role where local need shapes what you’ll be working on, but it often includes:

• Designing and making pieces of equipment for individuals with specific needs

• Using your practical skills working with metal, wood, plastic, or electronics (or a combination of them)

• Attending a monthly meeting of the local branch.

We can support you to develop the skills you need for this role, and there’s an induction that covers all the areas above. You’ll also have chance to discuss your role and any additional needs with us.

What you’ll need for this role

Immediate Theatre is a Hackney based community arts organisation with almost 30 years’ experience of providing quality arts opportunities in East London.  We are looking for people willing to bring energy, enthusiasm and commitment to the role, and who will broaden the diversity of thinking on our board. We are seeking two Governors for our voluntary-aided girls’ school in the East End of London who care deeply about transforming the lives of young women through education.

What will you be doing?

About You

We are looking for two new Foundation Governors who are excited by and committed to the delivery of an excellent education for students at our Girls' School in Tower Hamlets. You will join seventeen other members of the Governing Body responsible for the strategic direction of the school, and involved in many significant decisions in school life.

Time Commitment

Governors usually spend ~20 hours per term on core governing duties.

The Governing Body which meets four times a year to undertake its regular duties, with occasional meetings for urgent or time critical decisions. Regular meetings currently take place on Wednesdays during term time, usually at 5/5.30pm. Governors also need to allow time to read papers and prepare for meetings.

The Girls’ School Governing Body has three sub-committees – Finance & Resources, Curriculum, and Health & Safety and Personnel. These meet at least termly, and we ask that each governor sit on at least one committee.

In addition, we are particularly looking for the successful candidate to be able to spend a further 8 – 10 hours per term on ad hoc matters requiring more 'hands on' governor involvement, including meetings with students, staff and parents which usually take place during the school day. 

We encourage governors to attend one governor’s day per term when specific topics central to educational outcomes are highlighted for discussion with staff and students. Governors are also invited to attend public events such school play performances, music concerts and prize-giving ceremonies.

Being a Foundation Governor

Governors come from a wide range of backgrounds and professions and include some appointed by the staff of the school, parents and the Tower Hamlets Local Authority.  A majority of the governors are appointed by the Central Foundation Schools of London. As an Educational Charity we support two schools in inner London, the Girls' School and also Central Foundation Boys' School in Islington. This appointment will be a joint appointment by the Foundation and the Girls' School governing body.

Pain Concern is a charity providing information and support to people with pain and those who care for them, whether family, friends or healthcare professionals. Trustees play a vital role in ensuring Middlewich & District Foodbank meets its core purpose by overseeing the management and administration of the charity and ensuring that the foodbank has a clear strategy in line with our vision and goals.

What will you be doing?

This role involves leading on any safeguarding issues, policies or concerns, ensuring that the Board of Trustees at Middlewich & District Foodbank are aware and kept up to date in regard to the legal, regulatory and governance responsibilities of the charity regarding the care of all who enter the food bank, including staff and volunteers.

Key tasks:

Trustee (Safeguarding Lead) Responsibilities: 

• to ensure that the Trustee board understand their legal and regulatory responsibility on matters of safeguarding for the charity.
• to ensure, along with operational management support, that all safeguarding policies and risk assessments are in place and kept up to date with the changing internal and external environment
• to continuously keep up to date with all safeguarding legislation/regulations, to be able to reflect these changes in the food bank distribution centres/warehouse in the relevant manner.
• to ensure that all safeguarding issues are reported to yourself for the trustee board to be informed.
• along with operational management support, to ensure that all relevant staff, trustees or volunteers are suitably trained and aware of the correct process to follow if any safeguarding concerns arise, including how to raise a concern to the relevant authorities.

Other responsibilities, along with the board of trustees, include:

• to approve, support and guide the charity’s purpose, vision, strategy, goals and objectives.
• to manage the charity’s resources responsibly, including ensuring the charity’s assets are used only to carry out its purpose, avoid undue risk, and not over-commit the charity.
• to ensure appropriate financial plans are in place, budgets are monitored, and progress is evaluated.

About the CARAS ESOL Team:

Our award-winning ESOL project offers English language classes to adults at a wide range of levels. This provides vital skills, opportunities and social contact and is crucial for enabling people to attend college and access other services in the future.

About the Role:

CARAS is looking for volunteer ESOL Teaching Assistants to support our face-to-face adult ESOL classes in Tooting. Volunteers in this role are required to commit to at least one 2-hour session every Wednesday during these times: 

• Mondays ESOL 9:30 to 13:30

• Tuesday 9:30 to 11:30

• Tuesday One-to-one employability and language learning support 15:00 to 17:00 

Please note that ESOL classes do not run during school holidays, and we follow Wandsworth Council term dates.

Volunteer tasks and responsibilities:

• Providing learners with one-to-one or small group support within ESOL classes; 

• Helping to set up the classroom and provide learners with classroom resources;

• Attending and contributing to volunteer debriefs after each session;

Requirements: 

Essential: 

• To be 18 years or older; 

• Able to travel to our community centre in Tooting (travel expenses can be reimbursed); 

• An interest in education and English language teaching; 

• To be non-judgemental and able to engage with people from diverse backgrounds; 

• To be reliable and punctual; 

• Excellent communication skills, especially with people who are new to English; 

• The ability to volunteer on Mondays or Wednesdays during Wandsworth term time for a minimum of three months; 

• Currently resident in the UK; has asylum-seeker or refugee status 

• *Able to provide five years’ worth of addresses, and willing to undergo a DBS check; 

• Able to attend volunteer induction training (online) prior to start of role. 

 *DBS and proof of residency is not necessary if you are a CARAS community member who is more recently arrived in the UK. 

Desirable: 

• Knowledge of community languages, such as Arabic, Tigrinya, Amharic, Pashto, Dari, Farsi, Kurdish, Somali or Spanish. 

Through volunteering with us you will:

The Caldecott Foundation provides specialist residential care, fostering families and education for disadvantaged, vulnerable and traumatised young people in the UK.

We are seeking a Trustee with risk management and/or auditing experience. You will join a team of Trustees and staff helping some of the most vulnerable children in our society to build a future and reach their potential.

This is a fantastic opportunity to take on a leading role for the Board on organisational risk management and audit arrangements. Whilst the organisation currently has expertise in finance and business who can contribute to discussion around organisational risk, the Caldecott Foundation is seeking to add to this expertise, primarily regarding risks concerning Ofsted regulations, reputational and service delivery risks pertaining to working with vulnerable young people.

Whilst applications from all sectors will be considered, it is hoped that this important role can be filled by someone with expertise in social care and, ideally, someone who understands the organisational challenges and risks inherent in working with children and young people.

Our Board meetings are held four times a year. You will also Chair the risk and audit committee, which meet 4 times a year.

Person Description

• Someone with a passion for helping the most vulnerable children build a future and reach their potential.
• Someone with significant experience of operating at a senior level of business, preferably within an organisation which links to children and young people or someone who has worked with children and vulnerable adults in the past.
• Experience of risk management and/or auditing (preferably in a service industry other than finance).
• Experience of working with committees and chairing committees.
• Exceptional interpersonal skills and ability to work with a range of people with different roles.
• Someone with the ability to listen to others and bring in external expertise when needed.

The Trustee role is a critical one within the functioning of the organisation and as part of a group of volunteer Trustees you will be an important member of the leadership team. Did you know that 18% of adults in England are thought to have a reading level of 9-11 years or below? What about knowing that 54% of the UK’s working age population has low numeracy?

Within Tees Valley we intend to help tackle this by ensuring that those adults who struggle with reading and or/numeracy will be able to better access to effective support to improve these vital skills.

We’d like to recruit a Volunteer Champion who will represent us locally and work with key local stakeholders and partners to identify opportunities to deliver our Turning Pages (literacy) and Count Me In (numeracy) programmes.

These programmes have been shown to be highly effective in working with people with low levels of literacy and numeracy, and have been designed specifically for working with adults. They are delivered for free and on a 1:1 basis by trained reading coaches. Anyone with a reasonable level of reading or numeracy can be trained to deliver these programmes and this could present a fantastic volunteering opportunity locally.

This support can be life changing and can open up people’s access to opportunities in education, training and employment. Not only can this have a huge positive impact on the individual, but it can deliver improved outcomes for family members and have a positive impact on the local community.
