BRANCH TRUSTEE – INCOME GENERATION

Overview of the Branch Trustee opportunity
We are looking for an enthusiastic and passionate person, with a background in income generation or fundraising, who could devote their time to volunteer as a trustee for our Branch and support us in maximising the revenue brought into the Branch to support our animal centre and welfare work.
Alongside passing on your expertise, this opportunity will give you the chance to influence how we care for and prevent cruelty to animals and drive the implementation of key initiatives. You will serve on the governing body of the charity and be instrumental, alongside fellow trustees, in the running of the Branch and setting out both the short and long term aims.
As a minimum, trustees would normally be expected to attend a bi-monthly committee meeting lasting around 2 to 3 hours (virtual meetings are an option). However, the commitment may vary depending on your availability, and if you decide to take on additional duties.

Our mission is to seek out safe homes for abandoned, neglected or abused animals who are nursed back to health, rehabilitated and found forever loving homes.
Preston & District Branch is part of a network of 140 branches, and 1 of only 8 in the North of England with an animal centre.
The rehoming centre is within the Preston area (close to JCN 31 of the M6).
RSPCA Preston & District Branch is a well established Branch with approximately 20 members of staff and 75 volunteers across 4 locations and raises all its funds locally through supporters and other income streams.
To continue helping animals in need the Branch also operates 3 charity shops in Longridge, Chorley and Penwortham (within our specified branch area) which bring in a regular income to keep our animal centre open.
Primary responsibilities of the Branch Trustee – Income Generation
- Explore ways to generate income for the Branch and work closely with the Branch Manager to put these ideas into action.
- You would aim to identify potential sources of funding which could be explored so we can continue this important work.
- You would organise and coordinate events that bring together those also determined to improve the welfare of animals to raise the funds we need to come to the aid of animals who are in need. Work with the trustees to produce a fundraising plan and budget.
- Identify fundraising roles and help recruit volunteers to fill them.
What we are looking for in a volunteer:
Ideally you would have some level of knowledge in the following areas- finance, legal, fundraising, project management, business experience, awareness of employment and/or charity legislation. These all can be useful to help ensure we have a sound and robust business model and long term strategic development plan, however, they are not essential.
We are looking for people who are creative, innovative, who have experience of or are part of groups and communities we want to attract, who can bring new ideas, different experiences and fresh perspectives to the board and to help put those ideas into action.
We are committed to creating a Board which is representative of our society and in particular, our community and surrounding areas so encourage people from any background to apply for any of our opportunities.
Ultimately we are looking for someone who is committed to the RSPCA’s charitable objectives and shares our passion for animal welfare.
You will need to be able to work with people and have good interpersonal skills. You do not need to be an expert although commitment, common sense, and the ability to be objective are vital.

Practical considerations
- Please also note that to become a Trustee, you will need to be aged 18 or over and a member of our branch for three months before you are eligible to be elected at our AGM.

- Trustees must sign a Trustee Declaration of Willingness to Act to clarify that they are not disqualified from being a trustee and read the Charity Commission’s guidance for individuals who cannot be a trustee or senior manager of a charity.

- Take the lead in assisting the Branch to generate and develop social media strategies to maximise the promotion of animal welfare, rehoming campaigns, fundraising opportunities, and engagement with local supporters.
- Support the Branch in using social media effectively and working within the social media strategy.

- Responsible for feeding back key insights and performance markers to the rest of the committee at board meetings.

MAIN RESPONSIBILITIES
- Attend quarterly and where necessary ad-hoc Board meetings including Members meetings and AGM (virtual)
- Ensure the vision, mission and values as set out in the AmplifyChange Strategic Plan are upheld and implemented
- Have oversight on the management of risk and ensure compliance and accountability with the governing document, external regulators and UK law
- Approve policies and procedures to govern organisational activity, including guidance for the Board, staff, volunteers and contractors
- Have oversight of the systems for reporting and monitoring results and impact
- Ensure financial affairs of the organisation are conducted properly and are accurately reported
- Ensure AmplifyChange applies its resources exclusively in pursuance of its mission. For example, it must not spend money on activities which are not covered by the mission, however worthwhile they may be
- Lead discussions and provide guidance on new initiatives, particularly in areas where the Director has specific skills, knowledge or expertise

PERSON SPECIFICATION
·Young (under 30) with passion for and experience in area related to Sexual and Reproductive Health and Rights ideally in Africa or South Asia.
·Demonstrable experience in young people and youth networks for national, regional and/or international advocacy initiatives
·Demonstrable experience in young people and youth sexual and reproductive health and rights (SRHR) advocacy and programming
·Experience of working with young people from diverse backgrounds, ages, sexual orientations and gender identities
·Involvement in setting advocacy priorities and leading coalitions
·High integrity and driven by compassion and values that define and shape AmplifyChange - including a commitment to all aspects of SRHR and especially the right to safe abortion and LGBTI rights.
·Commitment to support an organisation working to secure full attainment of sexual and reproductive health and rights for all through building a stronger civil society, with diverse organisations who are resilient and work together to form movements for change.
REPORTING AND ORGANISATION
Role requirements and time commitment - Quarterly 2-hour (virtual) board meetings, with pre-reading. Participation in additional conference calls as needed, and optional sub-committees. AmplifyChange Board members serve a 3-year term and can be eligible for re-appointment.
This is a volunteer position, but reasonable travel expenses can be reimbursed.
Trustees will be expected to work remotely. Occasional travel may be required to Bath, UK.

About Safe Passage International
Safe Passage International (SPI) is a charity that champions the rights of people seeking asylum and displaced people as they flee persecution. We use the law to help them access safe routes to a place of safety and we work alongside them to campaign for change and build public support for safe passage for all.

SPI’s existing Board currently has ten Trustees who between them have expertise by experience and / or knowledge and experience in the areas of safeguarding and casework, campaigning and advocacy, EU policies and law, finance, HR, leadership development, public policy, and governance.
It is very important that the Board’s decision-making is informed by the perspectives of people seeking asylum. We value the powerful insight that lived experience brings to the Board. We also respect that people’s identity is not defined by their past experiences and do not expect candidates to describe their lived experience during the interview process unless they wish to.

What is a Trustee at Safe Passage International expected to do?
The overriding duty of all charity trustees is to advance the purposes of their charity as well as several basic legal duties. You can find out more about Trustees’ legal responsibilities here.
As a new Trustee, you will be a full and equal Board member. The Board of Trustees works closely with the Chief Executive and Senior Leadership Team of Safe Passage International to achieve its mission, and is responsible for providing support, guidance, and decisions in the following areas:
- Leadership: appointing the Chief Executive, supporting them in their role and holding them accountable.
- Accountability: ensuring that Safe Passage International is transparent and accountable to the public, our beneficiaries, and our donors about the way we carry out our mission and the way we spend the funds our supporters entrust to us.
- Strategic thinking: helping the charity to set goals and objectives, and work towards achieving them.
- Financial Oversight: including a formal review of the charity’s annual budget and supporting the Senior Leadership Team in financial management and organisation.
- Fundraising: including helping the charity to gain access to potential donors and supporters and providing general advice on areas of fundraising.
- Guidance and Support: including advising, where appropriate, the Chief Executive and Senior Leadership Team in areas such as employee management, strategic choices, and legal requirements.
Time Commitment and Expectations: If selected to join Safe Passage Internationals Board of Trustees, you will be expected to:
- Attend a range of training sessions prior to your first board meeting
- Attend 4 Board Meetings per year, plus one Strategy Day (in person where possible, otherwise electronically).
- Read required Board documents before each meeting and be ready to ask questions and actively contribute to the Board’s discussion
- If requested, ad-hoc meetings on particular subjects
- Join a sub-committee to contribute to a specific area
- Attend occasional meetings with members of the public, for example with Safe Passage International’s supporters, or with politicians and policymakers
- Be an ambassador for the charity and for young people seeking asylum
- Collaborate and work with Safe Passage International’s staff as required. The successful appointee will be required to apply for an enhanced DBS or criminal record check, but a criminal record is not necessarily a barrier to being appointed to this role.
Safe Passage International’s Board members are appointed for a term of three years, which can be renewed. Throughout your time as a Trustee, we are committed to supporting your growth and offer access to relevant courses and development opportunities to help you build your skills and maximise your impact
Like all other charities, Safe Passage International’s Board members are volunteers. The role is therefore unpaid. However, SPI will pay for your travel to meetings and other necessary expenses.

At Tir Natur we are passionate about our vision of Cymru, where wild nature and communities thrive and ecosystems are restored. We want to buy land to create Wales' largest rewilding project. This will help meet our aims to advance the improvement and conservation of the physical and natural environment. Rewilding will restore the natural processes that create resilient ecosystems and enhance biodiversity and bio-abundance.
Tir Natur (Nature’s Land) was established in June 2022 in response to the escalating nature and climate emergencies that we are facing, including loss of biodiversity and extreme weather events. According to the State of Nature Report 2023, 1 in 6 species is now at risk of extinction in Wales with 2% of the 3900 species assessed already lost. Since 1994, Wales has seen a 20% average drop in species abundance, a shocking trend that must be reversed. The report calls for ‘a rapid increase in rates of both ecosystem restoration and targeted species recovery action’ while acknowledging that the scale of current activity will likely see Wales fall far short.
We came together to take action as the scale of ambition to implement recovery and climate mitigation work in Wales are not sufficient. Tir Natur will purchase of a large area of land in Cymru to demonstrate the processes involved in large-scale ecosystem restoration. We will support nature to enhance resilience, enabling it to adapt to current and future challenges including climate change.
We will showcase the cascading benefits of putting nature first, from re-animating natural carbon cycles, to holding water back on the land, protecting communities and farmland downstream, and improving the physical and mental health of society through reconnecting people with wild nature.
We are a growing charity, and we are capturing the imagination of people from a wide range of backgrounds, as can be seen from the runaway success of our recent crowdfunder. We are united by a conviction that proposed actions are inadequate, that we need to act now, and that Nature cannot wait.
As a Trustee you will play a key role to ensure that Tir Natur continues to meet its aims and achieves success in its aspirations. You'll have a shared responsibility with 6-10 fellow board members to play a pivotal role in shaping our strategic direction, ensuring compliance and supporting our CEO. As Treasurer you’ll ensure our financial affairs are conducted within legal requirements and good practice. You’ll work closely with the chair and trustees to oversee the financial sustainability and development of our charity.
The Board meets 6 times per year which usually take place virtually in the evening (though once or twice per year these will be in person or hybrid meetings for which reasonable expenses will of course be paid). To undertake the role effectively there will be additional time and involvement required.
We’re ideally looking for volunteers with experience in financial management and a passion for environmental issues.

- Working with volunteers to ensure accurate records are kept of income and expenditure in line with legal regulations (we currently use Xero).
- Helping us to set an annual budget
- Being a signatory for cheque payments and reimbursing invoices and expenses
