About the role:
This is a full-time position (37.5 hours per week), offering a competitive salary equivalent to NHS Agenda for Change Band 9 (circa £110-125k). The role is based in London, with flexible and hybrid working options available.

The RSPB, Europe’s leading nature conservation NGO, is seeking a Director of Supporter Fundraising to lead the charity’s work in recruiting and stewarding the next generation of individual supporters to help address the nature and climate emergency.

The Royal Society for the Protection of Birds (RSPB) is a charity for the conservation of birds and nature, bringing people together who love birds and other wildlife, and who want to take action to restore the health and diversity of the natural world. The charity now manages and protects 160,000 hectares of land across the four countries of the UK.

Public support has been at the centre of RSPB’s work since its foundation as a campaigning organisation in 1889. With 1.1 million current members contributing over £95m to the charity’s cause in 2024, the RSPB has set itself a bold ambition to increase supporter numbers and net income from this core area.

Working closely with the Executive Director for Income and Conservation Investment and other senior stakeholders across RSPB, the Director of Supporter Fundraising will ensure that the organisation maintains and increases its income in membership, individual giving, legacies, in memoriam and community fundraising. The ideal candidate will have a proven track record in growing a large and complex individual giving or subscription programme across multiple products and channels. Significant experience in individual supporter fundraising or consumer marketing through direct marketing techniques will be essential.

The Foundation has an annual expenditure of £17m and employs 180 people in the UK, Ireland, India and the USA. We are anticipating further growth in the coming years. 

Reporting to the Director of Operations and working closely with the Chief Financial Officer, you will lead all aspects of the annual business planning and budgeting cycle and monthly reporting to the Foundation’s management and Trustees. You will partner with the Foundation’s Financial Controller and leadership team to provide insight and help inform decision making. The role will include financial planning, budgeting and analysis, and management accounting. You will lead a highly-skilled team, including the current Business Operations Manager and a Finance Apprentice.

The ideal candidate will have experience of working in an international organisation. You will have strong analytical ability and attention to detail and excellent business partnering skills. You will be accustomed to working with colleagues at all levels of the organisation and will be used to presenting and communicating financial information to non-finance people.

Responsibilities

• Oversee annual business planning, budgeting, forecasting, and long-term financial planning. 

• Partner with the leadership team to develop budgets, forecasts, and long-term financial plans.

• Work closely with the leadership team, providing financial expertise and guidance to support decision-making and optimise resource allocation across products and programmes.

• Provide in-depth financial analysis and insights, identifying trends, risks, and opportunities for improvement across products and programmes.

• Support Fundraising in bid process, providing robust and costed financial data for bids and reports back to funders.

• Embed cross team collaboration and systems between fundraising and finance to establish one source of truth on performance against grants.

• Provide assistance to the financial controller with cash flow forecasting, particularly in relation to timing of receipts of grant income and payment of onward grants.

• Manages a team of 2.

• The role will partner closely with the Financial Controller and two Senior Fundraising & Development Managers.

Experience and personal attributes

• Qualified accountant with 5+ years PQE or equivalent

• Significant experience in budgeting, forecasting, financial modelling, and analysis

• Proven track record in developing and implementing business plans, ideally in a nonprofit context

• Experience with grant budgeting, reporting, and compliance

• Familiarity with setting KPIs, tracking performance, and using data to inform decision-making

• Strong analytical skills and the ability to derive insights from financial and operational data

• Strong business partnering and interpersonal skills to build relationships with key stakeholders

• Excellent communication skills to present financial information clearly and concisely to diverse audiences

• Experience leading and managing teams, fostering collaboration, and developing talent.

The Director of Fundraising and Communications will have significant multi-income stream experience and will lead the development of a new income generation strategy to drive fundraising activities across philanthropic donors, corporates, family offices, foundations and institutional funding, maximising ROI and creating a sustainable organisation. The Chief Operating Officer (COO) oversees the organisation’s operations, financial management and strategy, people and culture, and governance. Trevi is seeking an inspirational and visionary Chief Executive to lead one of the most prominent women’s charities in the Southwest of England. This pivotal role involves working closely with the Board of Trustees to shape and steer the charity’s direction and leadership. The Chief Executive will be responsible for driving the organisation’s growth, ensuring exceptional service delivery, and upholding Trevi's core values and strategic goals. Additionally, the CEO will serve as the public face of Trevi, acting as a passionate ambassador for the charity while offering strong support and guidance to the senior management team.

Requirements:

• Executive level management experience in a charity or public sector body
• Experience of developing, implementing, evaluating and monitoring strategic, operational and business plans
• Proven expertise in strategic financial management, with a deep understanding of budgeting and financial forecasting
• Strong commercial acumen and experience of managing diverse portfolios with alternative income streams
• Exceptional track record of securing statutory grant funding and commissioning contracts
• A track record of forging successful partnerships and engaging with a wide range of internal and external stakeholders
• Experience of leading and operating effectively in an environment often characterised by complexity
• Extensive people management, leadership and team building skills
• Significant experience of change management

About the Role

Over the past 7 years, UnLtd have developed and built an investment offer for social purpose organisations. This has included the development and full deployment of two investment funds - UnLtd Impact Fund, and the Thrive Fund. We launched our third investment fund in partnership with Big Issue Invest in December 2022. The Growth Impact Fund is currently a £10m fund focussed on providing capital for diverse-led social purpose organisations.

Reporting into the Director of Delivery & Investment, this person would be responsible and accountable for our investment work across UnLtd. This includes the management of the previously deployed funds as well as management of UnLtd’s role in the delivery of the Growth Impact Fund, specifically the management of the pre and post investment support and the management of our portfolio of investees.

This is a significant role for UnLtd. It requires experience of working on and in an investment fund, managing a complex and ever-changing investment portfolio, as well as the ability to manage a team, and a high-level strategic partnership with Big Issue Invest.
