Job description

Background to the role

We are looking for a handyperson to join our team, providing handyperson support through the Havering Energy Doctors project.  The service is funded by the London Borough of Havering.

Job description

Job Purpose

· To support residents of Havering in, or at risk of fuel poverty, by fitting simple energy-efficiency measures in their homes. These measures include putting up curtain poles and thermal curtains, installing radiator reflector panels, draught-proofing, fitting LED light bulbs and damp and moisture damp readers.

· Working as part of our handyperson team you will deliver kind and friendly person-centred services to diverse communities across east London and Essex. You will work with people referred by our community partners, our hospital discharge teams, and wider AUKEL colleagues to help older people remain safe in their homes.

Key Responsibilities

Specific responsibilities

· To install simple energy efficient measures within the home

· To engage with project participants in a positive and constructive way and ensure their needs are met

· To provide excellent customer service

· To communicate effectively with the team

· To work with team members to achieve goals

· To input and report on the success of allocated tasks

· Assess whether the customer has additional needs that our wider team, or partners can support with, and refer/signpost as needed. For example, for benefit checks, befriending, carers support.

· Adhere to health and safety guidelines and AUKEL policies and procedures.

· To deliver food packages (and other emergency packages) when required.

 Health, Safety

· Whilst using AUKEL fleet vehicle ensure that appropriate checks are completed prior to driving e.g. tyre pressure, brake test etc.

· To keep AUKEL tools and equipment in a clean, safe working order meeting health & safety requirements.

· To work closely and support AUKEL volunteers and/or work placement by providing basic on the job training skills.

Lone Working: Ability to work alone and on own initiative, knowing when to seek help if appropriate.

Safeguarding: Report any safeguarding concerns to the AUKEL Safeguarding Dedicated Safeguarding Lead (DSL).

Administration

Financial Accountability: To keep detailed records of jobs completed e.g., time taken, materials purchased and used along with any donations received.

Incident Reporting: Report any ‘No Access’ failed visits in accordance with AUKEL’s policies and procedures.

App Maintenance: Maintain the AUKEL Call-Round app and Solo Protect Lone Working Personal Safety App/device in accordance with AUKEL policies and procedures.

Feedback Collection: Support customers to complete service feedback questionnaires where required

Quality

Quality Control: Services provided in accordance with Foundations Quality Mark.

Mandatory Training: Completion of essential training as required by AUKEL to ensure the delivery of safe, person-centred services.

 General

· Continuous Training: Complete any training necessary to fulfil the role effectively.

· Flexibility: Demonstrate flexibility in working hours and duties to meet the needs of the service and ensure high-quality service delivery.

· Support & Supervision: To meet with line manager on a regular basis

· Policy Compliance: Carry out the duties of the post in accordance with AUKEL policies and procedures, including but not limited to Equal Opportunities, Mental Capacity, Deprivation of Liberty, Food Hygiene, Health & Safety, Confidentiality, Complaints, GDPR (General Data Protection Regulation), First Aid and Safeguarding Vulnerable Adults

Collaboration

· Guidance & Direction: Operate under the direction of the Home and Care Manager whilst being supported by the Senior Handyperson.

· Internal Collaboration: Attend team and staff meetings as required

· External Collaboration: Work in partnership with Age UK Redbridge Barking & Havering and the London Borough of Havering (project funders) to enhance service provision and extend support networks for our customers.

· Relevant vocational qualifications or apprenticeship in a trade such as carpentry, plumbing, or electrical work is desirable.

· Understanding of the impact of discrimination and disadvantage on the lives of people and ability to work in a trauma-informed manner.

· Understanding and commitment to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of vulnerable adults and their carers.

· An awareness of and sensitivity to the needs of older people and their carers.

· Awareness of health and safety issues, risk assessment, COSHH, RIDDOR etc.

Additional Requirements

· As Age UK East London works with adults where children may be present the post holder will be required to have a satisfactory enhanced DBS certificate. A criminal record will not necessarily, but may be, a bar to obtaining a position with the organisation

· Flexibility in working hours to meet organisational needs.

Employment Details

 Contract type

This contracted post is for 35 hours per week (working day pattern to be decided) and may require some out of hours or weekend work as required.  We welcome application for flexible working including reduced hours and other flexible working arrangements.

Location

The post holder will be mostly based at London Borough of Havering

Salary  Between £28,840 and £31,390 Plus 5% employer pension contribution.

We have recently introduced a salary bands system. This salary range refers to the lowest and top steps of the grade. Salary will progress every year until the top salary is reached.

Holiday entitlement

25 days (pro-rata for contracted hours) of paid holiday per year plus bank holidays. This increases after two years of service to 27 days, and then a further one day per every year of service up to a maximum of 30 days after five years of service. In addition, all employees are entitled to one day off on (or around) their Birthday.

Conditions of employment

The job offer is subject to the receipt of two satisfactory Employment References, an enhanced DBS Check and evidence of relevant Qualification.
