Senior Youth Worker Jobs

For over 35 years, School-Home Support has been working with children, families and schools to break the cycle of poor school attendance, low educational attainment, anti social behaviour, crime, low paid or no job, generation after generation. School-Home Support gets children and young people back into school, ready to learn. Whatever it takes.

Purpose of role

To work with families, parents, carers and the school to enable children and young people to have full access to educational opportunities and overcome the barriers to learning.  This may include working with the wider family and community.

Work Context

Based at Haberdashers' Abraham Darby  the SHS Practitioner will work from a child centred approach and primarily be concerned with developing and maintaining good working relationships with parents/carers, children and young people, teachers, head teachers and various educational support staff and other agencies. The workload is varied and is negotiated with the schools prior to the appointment of the SHS Practitioner.

Level of contact with children and young people

The responsibilities of the post require the post-holder to have substantial, unsupervised and daily contact with children, young people and their families and is subject to an enhanced Disclosure and Barring Service check. SHS will organise and pay for this certificate.

Internal contacts

Colleagues of School-Home Support (UK) to share tasks, information and good practice, colleagues throughout the organisation who may be in a position to assist with, or require help from the SHS Practitioner in the fulfilment of the role. This includes colleagues in both schools and Central Office.  This is not a definitive list.

External contacts

This includes: head teachers, teachers, SENCOs, parents, carers and families, students, youth workers, other SHSPs/PSAs and learning mentors, health workers, voluntary sector organisations, researchers, other professionals in related fields of work.  This is not a definitive list.

Other Organisations

Professional contacts include: social services, schools, voluntary organisations, youth and community workers and groups, religious and cultural groups, benefits agencies, general practitioners etc. This is not a definitive list.

Main responsibilities and tasks

Work with families
 

1. Work with parents/carers in a school context, supporting them and building their engagement with their child’s learning.

1. To design and/or facilitate a flexible range of programmes of intervention to support parents/carers of children identified as vulnerable.

1. To undertake outreach work which may include home visits, to offer a flexible support service in accordance with the SHS lone worker policy, in order to improve parental engagement with the school and with the child’s learning.

1. To act as advocate, mediator and negotiator in confrontational situations, maintaining communication with young people, parents/carers, schools and other agencies.  This will include initiating and participating in meetings to discuss and develop ways of resolving problems.

2. To provide targeted support on a one to one basis or for small groups with parents/carers, children and young people through either self-referral or school staff referral.

3. To advise and inform parents/carers about relevant local services and where appropriate to make referrals to other agencies.

Liaison with other agencies

1. To ensure effective communication between the school, parents/carers and external agencies and to understand the school’s culture and ethos.

2. To provide informal opportunities for all parents/carers to access specialist support in the school and local community to increase their capacity to independently support the child’s learning.

3. To act in accordance with SHS and the school’s child protection procedures and ensure the job holder keeps up to date with relevant training in this area.

4. To attend and contribute to child protection conferences, reviews, core group meetings, pastoral support plan meetings and school reviews as appropriate, which may support the Early Help Assessment (EHA).

Monitoring and evaluation

1. To keep accurate electronic daily records and all documentation pertaining to meetings/contact with children and young people and their families.

2. To maintain receipts and documentation of any expenditure in order to facilitate the monitoring of the budget. 

3. Produce a written annual report before the end of each summer term with case studies.

4. To take ownership and fully participate in termly work plan reviews and the annual appraisal to determine priorities both for the school and for SHS.

Additional requirements depending on the needs of the school

1. Where appropriate to provide transition support between secondary school and feeder primary schools and between infant school and junior school.  This will also include mid-term admissions.

2. To plan, prepare and run high quality, outcome focused informal and formal parenting groups, workshops and courses, in line with the project objectives and local authority Parenting Strategy.

3. To support parents/carers of children and young people identified as at risk of exclusion or having been excluded.

4. To monitor and track the attendance and punctuality of children and young people and work with families and School attendance staff to gain improvements though identifying and tackling underlying issues.

5. To provide targeted work with children and young people who have persistent absence.

Other Organisational Responsibilities

1. To attend out of hours meetings, for example parent evenings and school events.

2. To regularly attend local area meetings and conferences and other meetings or working groups for exchange of information and “best practice”.

3. To take ownership and develop a learning plan and review this with the SHS line manager to ensure reflection and development of own practice.

4. To ensure that good practice and equal opportunity principles are complied with and promoted in accordance with SHS values and Diversity/Equal Opportunities Policy.

5. To conform to health and safety legal requirements as laid down by the school and SHS.

6. To ensure that a high level of confidentiality is maintained in all aspects of working with children, young people and their families.

Title: Male Residential Support Worker (this is a live-in role)

Responsible to: Senior Support Worker

Responsible for: Young people living in the accommodation (4 young people aged 16 – 18 years old seeking asylum in the UK).

Location: This is a live-in, residential role based in a supported accommodation home in Loughborough. Some work will be based in our office buildings.

Hours: 25 hours per week on duty – this is a mixture of day, evening and weekend shifts. Two days a week will be off duty.

Leave: Two nights a month can be taken as nights away from the home. This in addition to annual leave allowance. Annual leave - 33 days (converted into hours) pro-rata for number of hours worked

Salary Band: £24,150 - £27,760 per annum pro rata. Equivalent to £16,100 to £18,506 for 25 hours a week.

Benefits in kind: Rent-free accommodation, including Wi-fi, gas, electric and council tax bills.

Overall Purpose

To provide advice, assistance and support to young people in the home, as a key member of the Support Team, delivering Baca’s service in line with our Vision and Values. The role includes a consistent adult presence in the home. To attend to their practical and emotional needs whilst supporting the development of living skills. To teach them how to manage and look after a home in order to keep it safe and hygienic. To build trusting relationships within the home to enable young people to feel safe and cared for. To act as an excellent role model and to work closely with them and their Support Worker to enable them to make good progress towards independence.

Specific Duties & Responsibilities

• Welcome newly arrived young people into the accommodation, helping them feel safe and able to rest; with compassion without discrimination of age, race, colour or behavioural issues.
• Actively support young people to make progress and develop in the following outcomes; physical wellbeing and emotional wellbeing; personal safety; education and learning; employment and training that is safe and suitable; social engagement (being part of the community and activities outside of the home)
• Be an excellent and positive role model, offering advice, guidance and assistance and consistently modelling behaviours in line with Baca’s values.
• Using Baca’s progress plan, train all young people in living skills and looking after a home such as washing, personal safety, cleaning, cooking and food safety, food shopping and budgeting.
• Providing emotional support at times of difficulty, anxiety or stress.
• Encourage young people settle into and support them to maintain a healthy routine which will include regularly attending education and social activities.
• Act as a co-keyworker for the young people to ensure that their support plans and progress are up to date and that all their needs are being met.
• Enable young people to live with positive values and good boundaries by challenging any unhelpful or unsafe behaviours and encouraging safe and positive behaviours.
• In accordance with the guidelines on Safeguarding and Health and Safety policies, to accept responsibility for working within these guidelines and report any concerns.
• Work collaboratively with the rest of the Rebuild Team to ensure all young people are safeguarded and supported to rebuild their lives.
• Take responsibility for keeping the home clean, by consistently role modelling to and training young people.
• Maintain very good communication with relevant members of the Rebuild Team and relevant social workers
• Ensure regular appropriate reporting requirements are consistently met, meeting regulations set out by Ofsted.
• Complete and update all admin work as part of the role such as month end reports and support plans on time and in a consistent manner.
• Playing an active role in developing knowledge and understanding in areas relevant to the role and especially in the areas of asylum and refugee law, trafficking, supporting separated children and the cultures of different nations relevant to Baca.

Personal Specification

Baca is looking for a Support Worker who is passionate about seeing unaccompanied young refugees achieving their potential and rebuilding their lives for a better future. The successful applicant will have a personal style that is in line with Baca’s vision and values. They will live in the new arrival house and make it their home. They will be a good self-starter and have excellent interpersonal skills with the ability to inspire our young people to be the best they can be. The successful applicant will be motivated and passionate about the work that Baca does and the young people in our care. They will be very approachable, enjoy working as part of a wider team but also able to manage their own time and workload. Someone who is supportive, approachable, responsible, reliable, personable and willing to set boundaries in line with Baca’s values.

This is a frontline role that will need the successful applicant to be working closely with young people in their houses and will need access to transport young people to different appointments, meetings and activities.

Young Persons Housing Support Worker

We have a new role available for a Young Persons Housing Support Worker to join Depaul UK to ensure that every client leaves a Depaul service with the skills and resilience to be confident and self-determining in their lives.

About the Role

To work as part of a team delivering an assessment, support and move on service to vulnerable clients in supported or community-based accommodation. Your work will be underpinned by the Depaul Endeavour model of assets-based, psychologically informed delivery.

Working under the direction, guidance and support of a manager/senior worker you will be responsible for a caseload of clients as well as share responsibility for the safety and wellbeing of all clients, volunteers and staff in the service. In accommodation-based services, you will ensure that the accommodation is properly maintained and support the client to sustain their tenancy and participate in a positive and successful move on.

Where the client lives in the community you will ensure that their tenancy is not at risk and that they have the skills and resources to manage and maintain their accommodation. Your work will be underpinned by the Depaul model of Acceptance and Commitment Therapy informed delivery, the aim of which is to support our clients to understand and act on their values, strengths, and long-term vision for their future.

Key responsibilities include:

· You will carry a caseload of clients for whom you will be the named key worker, and you will also take joint responsibility with your team members for the well-being and day-to-day support of all clients in the services

· You will lead on risk and needs assessment and support planning for your key clients and contribute to ongoing needs and risk assessment of other clients in the service

· You will develop and implement SMART outcomes based support plans for your key clients

· You will deliver one-to-one and group support opportunities within their accommodation and in the local community aimed at increasing resilience in the clients we work with.

· You will proactively work in partnership with multiple agencies including statutory teams, to support the well-being of Depaul clients following data protection and information sharing protocols.

You will need to have the following skills and experience:

· An understanding and commitment to working in an assets-based way.

· An understanding of the needs of people who have experienced homelessness, poor mental health, and substance use.

· A knowledge and understanding of Risk Assessments and Support Planning.

· Good literacy, numeracy and IT skills.

· Able to demonstrate a clear understanding of safeguarding requirements and procedures.

About the Organisation

Depaul UK delivers a wide range of support and housing services for young people and adults at risk of homelessness. We specialise in the provision of services that prevent homelessness, increase the resilience of those we work with and energise opportunities for employment, education, training and volunteering in the communities we work within. The Ambition Case Worker has the lead responsibility for ensuring the inclusion of the identified marginalised young person within locality and cross locality youth work to reduce negative outcome. The Ambition Case Worker will liaise with, support, and work collaboratively with a range of agencies to ensure a holistic approach to embedding children and young people’s participation in service delivery.

DUTIES AND ACCOUNTABILITIES

· To identify needs, establish contact and build sustainable working relationships with identified young people to encourage and motivate participation in existing and new curriculum led youth work programmes. Identified groups include Looked after Children (LAC) and Care Leavers, Young People with Learning Difficulties (SEN), Young Carers and young people identified by the community of being at risk.

· Lead the case management of the cohort of young people with the team to ensure we are working with multi agency, that have been identified in the Southwark Vanguard and beyond.

· To ensure the effective, ethical and meaningful involvement of young people to inform service planning, policy development and delivery of single and multiagency services.

· Operating as part of a team around the family, ensuring work undertaken is reflected in the personal development plan for the young person. As well as working with other professionals towards the agreed common goals, updating the lead professional for a case on involvement on a regular/agreed basis and attending identified Vanguard meetings to ensure work is well co-ordinated.

· Review and update development plan/assessment where there is no child protection concerns but where support is clearly needed, considering the needs and strengths of all family members with multi agency support.

· Participate in the gathering of information to inform in depth assessment of both the young person and family needs.

About the Role

To work as part of a team delivering an assessment, support and move on service to vulnerable clients in supported or community-based accommodation. Your work will be underpinned by the Depaul Endeavour model of assets-based, psychologically informed delivery.

Working under the direction, guidance and support of a manager/senior worker you will be responsible for a caseload of clients as well as share responsibility for the safety and wellbeing of all clients, volunteers and staff in the service. In accommodation-based services, you will ensure that the accommodation is properly maintained and support the client to sustain their tenancy and participate in a positive and successful move on.

Where the client lives in the community you will ensure that their tenancy is not at risk and that they have the skills and resources to manage and maintain their accommodation. Your work will be underpinned by the Depaul model of Acceptance and Commitment Therapy informed delivery, the aim of which is to support our clients to understand and act on their values, strengths, and long-term vision for their future.

Key responsibilities include:

· You will carry a caseload of clients for whom you will be the named key worker, and you will also take joint responsibility with your team members for the well-being and day-to-day support of all clients in the services

Board Administration

• Liaising with the Trustees on meeting dates and logistics

• Preparing meeting agendas and discussion papers alongside the Chair

Communication

• Maintain the working relationships between the Board of Trustees, senior management and centre staff, ensuring effective channels of communication and feedback

Board compliance and advice

• Ensure the Board is compliant with all legal and statutory requirements such as paperwork and governance.

Trustee Recruitment 

• Work on the recruitment of new Trustees including advertising on the relevant platforms

• Administration of the recruitment process including scheduling interviews, managing the recruitment drive folder and ensuring all relevant paperwork is complete.

• Support the Chair to provide appropriate training for new Trustees.

It is expected that the Clerk to the Board will also take on other responsibilities such as helping to maintain and manage the Google Drive, ensuring information is managed correctly.

About The Roots Foundation Wales

We are an award-winning charity supporting children and young people in care, those transitioning to independent living and care leavers. We also support foster and kinship carers. 

In 2017 we featured on a BBC1 DIY SOS & Children in Need special and as a result we have a beautiful centre with 3 semi-independent living flats attached.  Our Transition to Independent Living programme is bespoke and holistic in its approach and aims to teach young people on the cusp of leaving care (16-19 years old) independent living skills to aid a smooth and positive transition into adulthood.

We have a team of youth workers, night staff and volunteers who run groups, activities and clubs throughout term time and school holidays for young people aged 4-25. We hold coffee mornings for carers, a playgroup for young parents and activity groups ranging from crafts club to cookery, youth club and movie nights.

We have an ambitious plan to deliver an innovative and varied programme of youth work, jobs, employment and education (JET) and lifeskills to young people this year and we are searching for an exceptional candidate to help us succeed in this vision.
We are looking for a candidate who is committed to delivering high quality services to homeless young people. The successful person will be responsible for delivering an innovative and youth-led JET and lifeskills programme as well as supporting with the coordination of our daily day centre service to young people aged 16-24.
You will have experience motivating and inspiring frontline teams, maintaining and building a network of relationships with relevant external agencies and be able to work dynamically and confidently in a fast-paced day centre environment. We’re looking for a candidate who can think on their feet, demonstrate initiative and proactivity, and is an excellent problem-solver.
The ideal candidate is a team player who enjoys working collaboratively across our organisation. They will be committed to the safeguarding of young people and helping us to develop an inclusive and trauma-informed service.
