Peer Support Group Development Officer - Midlands Area

Overview:
Following the successful application of a National Lottery award, we are seeking two dedicated and compassionate Peer Support Group Development Officers to set up and sustain local peer support groups for people living with and affected by prostate cancer. These roles focus on building on our established networks to expand peer support in defined areas, facilitating group formation, and enhancing service delivery through strategic outreach and resource development.

Key Responsibilities:
- Group formation and support: Oversee the setup and operation of 10-12 self-sustaining and independent peer support groups within your assigned region across the lifetime of the three-year project. Ensure smooth delivery, monitoring, and evaluation of group activities. Support existing group leaders and organisers to reach more people living with and affected by prostate cancer with tools and resources.
- Volunteer Coordination: Recruit, train, and support volunteer Support Group Leaders. Assist in the co-production of training materials and resources, aimed at creating self-sustainable groups.
- Community Engagement: Conduct outreach to map existing support services and facilitate the integration of these services with the peer support groups. Host local engagement events to boost volunteer recruitment.
- Data and Case Management: Use a Customer Relationship Management (CRM) system to support high-quality volunteer and case management, ensuring accurate data collection to support service outcomes.
- Training and Development: Develop and deliver tailored training programmes for volunteers based on the specific needs of Group Leaders and Organisers. Set up regional forums for sharing best practices and peer networking. Encourage use of Members Portal to share good practice.
- Documentation and Compliance: Ensure compliance with Best Practice Guidance document. Ensure adherence to safeguarding policies to maintain safe governance of peer support groups.
Skills and Qualities Required:
- Strong Facilitation and Communication Skills: Ability to engage effectively with diverse groups. Excellent written and verbal communication skills are essential.
- Project Management: Proven skills in managing complex projects with multiple stakeholders. Ability to meet deadlines and manage a varied workload.
- Volunteer Management: Experience in recruiting, training, and supporting volunteers in community settings. Knowledge of best practices in volunteer management.
- Influencing: Experience of influencing a wide range of partners and stakeholders, and in particular clinicians and voluntary and community providers within the health and wellbeing community.
- Community Development: Experience of developing and delivering community services with a range of stakeholders, including health and social care workers, commissioners, local authority and community and voluntary partners.
- Data-Driven Approach: Experience with data collection and CRM systems and a commitment to data-driven service evaluation.
- Community Sensitivity: Experience collaborating with people with a lived experience of cancer or other long-term conditions. Ability to understand and empathise with community needs.
- Administrative: Strong administration and IT skills to maintain accurate records and documentation.
- Safeguarding Knowledge: A good understanding of safeguarding practices, particularly concerning vulnerable populations.
Educational Qualifications:
- Relevant qualification or experience in Community Development, Psychology, Public Health, or a related field is preferred.
Essential Requirements:

About the Role
We are seeking to recruit a creative and ambitious Fundraising and Communications Officer.
As our reach and impact has increased significantly in recent years, so has our income, and this new role has been created in response to that demand. This is an exciting opportunity for a fundraiser who wants to widen, or consolidate, their knowledge and experience of fundraising, in an international context, as well as gain communications experience.
We are a very small team so the role will cover a breadth of funding streams, with a particular focus on Trusts and Foundations, High Value Donors, and Events, both special and community. It is therefore important that you have excellent writing and interpersonal skills, and solid experience of crafting successful funding applications. You will also need excellent planning and organisational skills.
The role can, to some extent, be shaped by the skills and experience of the successful candidate, but it is likely to include the following responsibilities.
Key Responsibilities
- Steward, retain and grow the support of our existing donor portfolio: KHULA has an existing portfolio of donors including trusts, foundations, corporates, major donors, individual and regular givers, the majority of whom are based in the UK or South Africa. Alongside the Director of Fundraising and Communications, the post holder will be responsible for managing these relationships, including bespoke reporting for trusts and major donors and taking responsibility for their own portfolio of donors.
- Donor prospecting and new business: researching and generating new donor leads as well as acting on opportunities provided by our Board and others, converting prospects into supporters of our programmes.
- External communications: working alongside the Director of Fundraising and Communications, assisting in the creation of our quarterly e-newsletter and the Annual Report, managing our social media channels, in addition to other ad hoc external communications.
- Events: supporting our community and events fundraisers and assisting with the organisation of occasional special events, alongside Board members.
- Fundraising innovation: assisting in the development of creative campaigns to increase donations/recruit lapsed donors, developing products and offerings.
- Financial management and admin: maintaining our donor database and contributing to fundraising budgets and forecasts.
Person Specification
Experience of working in a smaller charity and team is beneficial as this is a very hands-on role, covering a wide range of responsibilities.
We are particularly interested to hear from candidates who demonstrate most/all of the following attributes:
- A proven, demonstrable track record of submitting successful funding applications.
- Experience in successfully fundraising from one or more of trusts, foundations, high value donors and corporates.
- Experience of community and events fundraising, including promoting events and supporting participants.
- Excellent communication writing skills.
- Personal or professional experience of a range of social media channels.
- Good IT Skills (Microsoft Office, Mailchimp, CRM systems (we use Donorfy))
- Self-motivated and able to work autonomously with a largely virtual team

Job Purpose
The purpose of this role is to provide operational support to CAVA’s Health and Wellbeing Manager to support the delivery of the community engagement aspect of the REN Workplan which is identified through the REN Working/Steering Group. The Coventry and Warwickshire REN is currently funded by the National Institute for Health and Care Research (NIHR) and aims to increase opportunities and inclusivity for people (particularly from underserved communities) to take part in research, to tackle health inequalities, and identify ways for researchers to improve the health and wellbeing of people across Coventry and Warwickshire Integrated Care System.
The post holder will be responsible for supporting Working and Steering Group meetings, attending REN events on behalf of CAVA and taking a proactive role in gathering examples of good practice and sharing outcomes and impact with stakeholders. This role will support engagement with communities throughout Coventry and Warwickshire by supporting delivery of in-person engagement events and support the recruitment of, and support related to, Volunteer Community Research Champions who play a vital and central role within this scope of work.
Main Duties and Responsibilities:
- Support organisation and delivery of in-person engagement events for the REN work
- Support the REN Working and Steering Groups with communications and marketing activities with various stakeholders (including with: VCFSEs; potential and existing volunteer Community Research Champions; updates to funders; and for various communication channels of the ICS)
- Support gathering of examples of good practice and presenting these case studies in various formats
- Support the team with gathering intelligence, and liaising with VCFSEs about capturing and sharing in an Engagements and Insights Atlas the research opportunities and learnings from across Coventry and Warwickshire
- Champion VCFSEs involvement in using their knowledge and understanding of issues related to addressing inequalities and under-representation, and improving health
- Support the REN with writing monitoring reports
- Circulate relevant material and agendas and take notes from virtual and in-person meetings
- Support the REN with the recruitment, on-going support, training, and organisation of virtual and in-person events for volunteer Community Research Champions
- Attend relevant meetings (in-person and virtually, as appropriate)
General
- Participate in individual supervision sessions with your line manager.
- Attend and contribute to relevant CAVA meetings.
- Undertake relevant training agreed with the line manager.
- Ensure that under-represented groups have access to CAVA services offered by the post.
- Comply with CAVA’s work programme, policies and procedures.
- Partake in occasional CAVA events including AGMs and Away Days.
- Undertake additional duties occasionally, commensurate with the grading of this post.
