We have an exciting opportunity to join the Wildlife team, within the Policy, Prevention and Campaigns Division, as a Senior Scientific and Policy Officer - Animals in Entertainment & the Media.
This pivotal role will address a significant gap in the protection and welfare of animals used in entertainment and media. Tens of thousands of animals are featured in films, television shows, advertisements, often facing substandard treatment and welfare conditions. Despite public concern, current legal and industry safeguards remain inadequate.
The creation of this new role within the RSPCA, is not only vital for addressing current deficiencies in animal welfare within the entertainment industry but also reinforces the RSPCA's commitment to leading positive change.
This role will drive forward critical initiatives, ensuring that the welfare needs of animals are prioritised and protected, reflecting the values and expectations of society.
This role is being offered as a 24 month fixed term contract. We are open to flexible working options, such as part time hours and the role will be offered on a hybrid working basis; working from home and from our London and or Horsham office.

What a day might look like for you:
As our Senior Scientific and Policy Officer - Animals in Entertainment & the Media, you will develop and implement a strategic plan to raise industry standards, improve legal protection, and shift public attitudes to improve the welfare of animals used in these industries.
The role is situated in the RSPCA's Wildlife Department but the scope of the work includes all animals, including companion animals, so you will work collaboratively across several departments.
You can find a full description of what the role entails on the attached role profile but in a nutshell, we will look to you to:
- Generate and maintain RSPCA policies, strategic aims, goals and objectives relating to animals in entertainment and the media.
- Develop and implement a strategic influencing plan to improve industry standards, legal protection, and public attitudes towards animals in entertainment and the media
- Build strong relationships with stakeholders, including those in the entertainment industry, animal welfare organisations, and regulatory bodies, and represent the RSPCA in advocacy coalitions to achieve the RSPCA's goals and objectives.
- Prepare and deliver evidence-based briefing papers, policy reports, position statements, articles, and press releases.
- Work with RSPCA colleagues to ensure RSPCA standards are based on the latest scientific evidence and best practices.
- Undertake media interviews as the RSPCA's lead spokesperson on animal welfare in entertainment.
- Stay up-to-date on animal welfare science, legislation, ethics, and industry developments.
What makes a great Senior Scientific and Policy Officer - Animals in Entertainment & the Media?

- A degree level qualification in a relevant discipline.

They are looking for an experienced treasurer to support the Board, CEO and Finance Director in the successful delivery of the charity’s financial responsibilities. This includes provision of advice, guidance, challenge and reassurance on all aspects of the charity’s financial activities, ensuring that their strategic plans are underpinned by robust and fit for purpose financial management. Board meetings and time commitment
The The Board ordinarily meets four times per year in March, May, August and November. Two of these meetings are held remotely via video call on a Saturday, and two are held in person in London across weekends. In addition, Trustees are encouraged to join a Committee relevant to their area of expertise which meets at least once per quarter via video call. An appropriate time commitment will be required over the course of the year for preparative work between meetings. Trustees are also invited to attend occasional charity events and join recruitment panels on an ad hoc basis.
Following a probationary period where Trustee-elects attend at least 2 board meetings, appointed Trustees serve a three-year term, with the option to renew for a further three years. Trusteeship is an unremunerated position, though reasonable out-of-pocket expenses will be paid.

What you’ll be doing
- Support the Events Manager to coordinate an innovative and inspiring events programme (both in person and on-line)
- Support other teams in the delivery of specific events. This includes launch events for new activities or campaigns
- Event delivery, including ensuring all materials and equipment needed for events are transported and set up
- Keeping events programme up to date on appropriate digital platforms
- Monitoring and responding to customer queries via email and telephone

- Able to set up the equipment needed for events. This can include, and is not limited to setting up gazebos, carrying and transporting items, arranging chairs, PA systems. This is likely to compromise 5-10% of the role.

About the Role
As Communications Officer you will be responsible for managing Communications for the UK as well as inspiring both new and existing supporters. You will create exciting and innovative content across a range of channels which will raise awareness of the charity and generate income.
You will curate the monthly email newsletter, create content for social media and write press releases. You will also manage a number of exciting projects and work cross organisationaly with the wider team in Kenya and the USA on the Communications plan.
About you
You will have had at least 2 years experience in Communications ideally in the third sector and have the proven ability to write creative and compelling copy for a variety of Channels. You will also be able to demonstrate that you have experience in delivering successful communications and marketing campaigns.
You will be proficient in PR and you will be able to demonstrate that you can build relationships with external stakeholders as well as have experience with Mailchimp or equivalent email software.
This role is office based in Billingshurst, West Sussex and some hybrid working may be considered. Please note that part time hours (4 days per week) will also be considered.

EU Campaigner
Position Objective:
To plan and execute campaign actions across Europe to ensure the success of PETA’s anti-bullfighting campaign, with a focus on successfully ending the Catholic Church’s support of bullfighting.

Primary Responsibilities and Duties:
- Conceive of, organise, and oversee disruptions, demonstrations, and other campaign projects
- Recruit and liaise with activists in Europe, with the aim of building relationships with and a network of key activists, and enlist their assistance when needed to deliver on campaign goals
- Stay informed of significant events and decision-makers within the Catholic Church and identify opportunities to advance the anti-bullfighting message
- Coordinate projects for PETA’s anti-bullfighting campaign, including producing new content, conducting research, and writing letters
- Work with the PETA US production team to create and redesign posters, banners, literature, and other outreach materials as needed

Responsibilities
Strategic development and implementation

Develop and oversee an effective PR communications strategy, including business/trade press and public affairs (EU and UN advocacy), based on ProVeg’s strategic principles, impact areas and global interventions.
