We are seeking a Director of Finance to lead financial strategy to ensure long-term resilience, manage the finance team, deliver a high standard of financial governance, and provide effective support for our parishes. This role reports to the Chief Operating Officer.

As a key member of the Senior Leadership Team, you will provide expert financial guidance to the Bishop, Trustees, and diocesan leaders. You will oversee financial governance, treasury and investment management, risk assessment, and IT strategy, ensuring financial prudence while supporting the mission of the Church.

We are looking for a qualified accountant (ACA, ACCA, CIMA) with experience in complex organisations and, ideally, knowledge of the charity or not for profit sector. The successful candidate will have well-developed interpersonal skills, a track record of excellent attention to detail, and the ability to explain complex financial matters to non-finance audiences. A commitment to teamwork and supporting parishes is essential.

An understanding of Catholic Church teachings and values is crucial, as you will play a key role in aligning financial decisions with pastoral priorities.

Job Purpose

The Director of Finance is a key member of the Senior Leadership Team, responsible for strategic financial leadership and ensuring the financial sustainability of the Diocese. This role encompasses treasury management, investment strategy, risk management, IT oversight, and long-term financial planning. It also involves leading and developing a resilient and professional finance team.

The Director of Finance must balance financial prudence with pastoral priorities, fostering trust with clergy, lay leaders, and stakeholders while driving financial and operational efficiencies.

Key Responsibilities

Strategic Financial Leadership

• Develop and implement a financial strategy aligned with the Diocese’s mission and long-term objectives.
• Provide financial analysis, forecasting, and risk management to support strategic decision-making.
• Ensure compliance with Canon Law, UK financial regulations, and charity law across all jurisdictions.
• Advise the Bishop, COO, Trustees, and key leaders on all aspects of financial management.
• Attend senior board and committee meetings presenting clear and insightful financial reports.

Treasury & Investment Management

• Oversee treasury operations, ensuring effective cash flow management and financial sustainability.
• Lead on investment strategy, working with the Investment Committee and external advisors to maximise ethical and responsible investment returns.
• Regularly review Restricted and Designated Funds to ensure compliance with Diocesan policies and procedures for such funds.

Leadership of the Finance Team

• Provide strong leadership, fostering a culture of excellence, accountability, and continuous improvement.
• Develop and mentor finance staff, ensuring they have the skills and support needed to succeed.
• Ensure the efficient operation of financial systems, budgeting, reporting, and internal controls.
• Promote collaboration across diocesan departments, ensuring effective financial stewardship at all levels.

Financial Oversight, Risk Management & Investigations

• Oversee fraud risk management, implementing robust controls to identify, prevent, and address financial irregularities, particularly in parish accounts.
• Develop and maintain a Financial Risk Register, identifying and mitigating key risks across the Diocese, including fraud, liquidity, compliance, and operational risks.
• Regularly review and update the Risk Register, ensuring risks are assessed, mitigated, and reported to senior leadership and trustees.
• Establish and implement risk management strategies, embedding a culture of financial accountability across the Diocese.
• Provide audit support and financial guidance to parishes, ensuring adherence to best practices and regulatory requirements.
• Lead the development of annual budgets, ensuring alignment with diocesan strategy and long-term financial sustainability.
• Develop and maintain long-term financial forecasts, assessing future income, expenditure, and funding requirements.
• Lead and manage complex financial investigations, ensuring transparency, accuracy, and compliance.

Financial Planning & Parish Support

• Provide strategic financial support to parishes, schools, and diocesan agencies, helping them develop long-term sustainability plans.
• Offer guidance on budgeting, financial controls, and fundraising strategies.
• Develop and implement financial training for clergy and parish finance teams to improve financial literacy and compliance.
• Operational & IT Leadership
• Lead the IT strategy, ensuring digital transformation aligns with financial and operational objectives.
• Work with IT providers to ensure cybersecurity, data protection, and technology governance.
• Embed and oversee financial systems and processes, driving efficiency through modern financial software and automation.

 Payroll

• Lead the payroll function working closely with the HR manager to deliver a reliable and accurate service for employees. This will include the effective use of the designated payroll IT system.

Governance, Reporting & Compliance

• Ensure full compliance with accounting standards, charity law, and internal policies across all jurisdictions.
• Delivery of the Financial Annual Report and Accounts to agreed timescales.
• Develop and update key policies and procedures to ensure financial governance and accountability.
• Work closely with Trustees, external auditors, and regulatory bodies to maintain transparency and good governance.
• Implement robust internal financial controls to safeguard diocesan assets and mitigate risks.
• Develop a standard suite of financial reports to enable informed strategic and operational decision-making for the Board of Trustees and senior leaders.
• Timely production of monthly management accounts and cashflow analysis

Leadership & Stakeholder Engagement

• Act as a trusted advisor to the Bishop, clergy, Trustees, and Senior Leadership Team.
• Communicate complex financial information clearly and persuasively to both finance professionals and non-experts.
• Build strong relationships with internal and external stakeholders, ensuring financial decisions support the Diocese’s mission.

Director of Finance - Person Specification

Competence, Expertise and Knowledge:

Essential

• Degree-level education (or equivalent professional qualification/experience).
• A qualified accountant (ACA, ACCA, CIMA, or equivalent).
• Extensive financial leadership experience, ideally within charities, faith-based organisations, or complex institutions.
• Proven expertise in treasury and investment management, with experience in ethical investment strategies.
• Strong IT acumen, with experience in financial systems, digital transformation, and IT governance.
• Excellent leadership and people management skills, with experience leading and developing high-performing teams.
• Strong interpersonal and communication skills, with the ability to engage clergy, Trustees, and external stakeholders effectively.

Additional information

This role will be working 37.5 hours per week, offering a competitive salary of £80,000 - £85,000 per annum.

Based at St. Edmund House, Bishop Crispian Way, Portsmouth, PO1 3QA, with regular travel across the Diocese to parishes and diocesan meetings, including the Channel Islands which may require overnight stays. Please note, for this role a full driving licence and access to a vehicle will be required.

As Deputy Fundraising Director, Public Fundraising, you will: 

• Be responsible for a public fundraising income portfolio of c. £20m p.a. across recruitment, retention and development income streams, with shared accountability for a fundraising income budget of £35m
• Lead the development and implementation of a strategy and plans for public fundraising, aligned with Greenpeace UK’s new 3-year organisational and fundraising strategies and objectives
• Provide leadership, direction, coaching, and support to a team of 29, with 4 direct reports

Ideal skills and experience: 

• Experience of fundraising/marketing to individuals at scale, with a proven track record of recruiting and retaining new supporters, members or customers in the tens of thousands and generating 7-8 figure revenue/income across multiple income streams
• A track record of planning, forecasting and budgeting, including developing investment cases and modelling income, return on investment and lifetime value over short, mid and long term horizons to drive decision-making and investment choices
• Demonstrable experience of leading, managing, motivating and inspiring high performing multi-disciplinary teams including managing managers, with a focus on fostering a collaborative and inclusive culture
• Experience of developing, implementing, and adapting fundraising strategies that meet long-term financial objectives
• Proven ability to use data, analytics, and insights to drive decision- making, optimise fundraising performance, and improve supporter recruitment, retention and engagement

Reporting to the Chief Programme Officer, this senior leadership position oversees the development team and is responsible for a portfolio of trusts and foundation grants, high-net-worth individual giving, and government funding. The team oversees the entire fundraising cycle across the portfolio, including identifying and cultivating funding relationships, developing high-quality proposals, managing grants, and stewardship.

Leuchie is the national respite charity giving families a break from the physical and emotional responsibilities of caring for a loved one. The charity is dedicated to supporting individuals and families living with a neurological condition such as MS, MND, Parkinson’s and stroke through short respite breaks and outreach services. The expert team work to transform lives by improving health, enabling independence, and tackling loneliness.

Leuchie provides a range of settings that suit the health needs and circumstances of the individual and their family. There is a growing need to support those living with a neurological condition and their families that Leuchie is determined to respond to. The charity currently supports around 500 families, just like Dorothy and Robert, each year, and has a strategic intent to positively impact ten times as many lives by 2030.

Director of Development Role

The charity is looking for a new Director of Development to join its senior leadership team and take ownership of its fundraising and communications functions. Leuchie is looking for someone with deep knowledge of both these areas through a senior fundraising or business development career. You will be expert at writing growth strategies and have led a team to deliver success. Leuchie has huge potential to increase its support from high net worth individuals and corporate partnerships so you will need to be particularly knowledgeable about these channels.

You should have experience working with a Board of Trustees/Management to achieve your strategic goals as well as providing Board reports for your department. You will need to be an outstanding communicator at all levels.

The SS Great Britian Trust is seeking a12-month, maternity cover, Development Manager to play a key role in maximising income for the SS Great Britain Trust through Corporate, Trust and individual fundraising. Who We’re Looking For

We are seeking candidates with experience of developing income streams and delivering funding against targets. You will help to deliver a programme of events (from breakfast meetings showcasing items in the archive to evening events with shanty singers!) to engage with potential supporters and build relationships with new funders.

You will have brilliant writing skills and be able to develop excellent funding bids, alongside building effective working relationships with different teams, senior leaders and external stakeholders.

Key duties:

• Work with the Director of Development to grow income across a range of income streams, with a particular focus on Trusts and Foundations, including multi-year grants, unrestricted and restricted income.
• Lead the team in prospect research, developing qualified prospect pipelines across income streams and driving new funding approaches.
• Maximise opportunities with Corporate supporters. Work to develop existing Corporate Partnerships, and identify opportunities for growth and achieve new income across Memberships, Sponsorship and Corporate Trusts and Foundations.
• Achieve results through persuasive and compelling applications and proposals and creating robust budgets, and amplify project impact through detailed monitoring and inspiring reports.

GARAS provides support, advocacy, and integration services for refugees and asylum seekers in Gloucestershire and West Oxfordshire. We offer assistance with legal matters, access to essential services, arrange language support & other dynamic initiatives, to help individuals and families build a new life with dignity and security.

GARAS’ vision is a welcoming, inclusive, safe space for refugees and people seeking asylum, where all live free of destitution and have the means and opportunities to realise their full potential. Our mission is to provide refugees and people seeking asylum with practical support when it is most needed, build connections between people and use what we learn to raise awareness and advocate for positive change.

We are a team of 28, both full time and part time staff working across and/or supporting 3 teams: the Advice Team, the Ukrainian Team and the Resettlement Team. There is also a Housing Officer, an Employment Officer, and a team of Therapists. 

Job Purpose

The Director leads GARAS in its mission to support refugees and asylum seekers, with a strong commitment to their rights and well-being.

The successful candidate will be an innovative and strategic thinker, who can work with key stakeholders across Gloucestershire and West Oxfordshire to develop and deliver impactful services which navigate complex challenges. The Director is responsible for the strategic direction, financial sustainability, and overall management of the organisation, ensuring GARAS operates in accordance with its values and goals. Key Responsibilities

Strategic Leadership and Development

• Provide visionary leadership to advance GARAS’s mission and strategic priorities.

• Act as a spokesperson for GARAS, representing the organisation’s mission and values to the public, media, and other stakeholders.
• Develop advocacy strategies to promote awareness of refugee and asylum seeker issues within the community and among policymakers.
• Engage with media, attend public events, and foster partnerships to raise the profile of GARAS.

Team Leadership and Development

• Provide inspirational leadership, mentoring, and support to our dedicated team of staff and volunteers, fostering a positive, inclusive, and collaborative work culture and promoting continuous professional development and well-being.
• Provide direct line management to senior staff including development support, coaching, performance management and access to training, and to support senior staff and volunteers to do the same to the teams they manage.
• Ensure, through the senior staff, that all teams have robust work plans and key performance indicators in place which contribute to the achievement of GARAS’ long-term strategy and annual plans.
• Run regular all-team meetings to ensure good working practice is shared across the teams
• Work with the Trustee Board to recruit staff as required for the running of the organisation using fair and equitable systems.
• Work with the Office Manager to ensure effective oversight and resolution of any HR issues.
• Maintain and develop relationships with local Universities to provide opportunities for student placements
