Chief Executive Officer (CEO) – Animal Welfare Campaigning Charity
Location: Hybrid working (mostly home based with a head office in Godalming, regular travel across the UK to meet politicians, supporters and other stakeholders)
Salary: £75,000-£95,000

About the Role:

The new CEO will play a vital role in shaping the future vision and strategic direction for the charity. You will take the lead in raising its profile and maximising impact and growth by extending and diversifying the customer base and developing new products.
You will be an excellent ambassador for the organisation, able to widen our reach through developing networks and strategic partnerships, and closer working with opinion leaders.
Alongside the external facing elements of the role, it is important that the team feel well supported, and that all aspects of operational delivery run smoothly, regulatory requirements are met and financial management is robust.
To be successful in this role you will need:
- Strong leadership, with experience of developing strategy and managing and communicating organisational change
- Significant experience at a senior level in business management and a track record of generating income from a wide range of sources
- Experience of effective and sustainable financial and performance management
- Well-developed relationship management and influencing skills
- Experience in developing and sustaining multi-sector partnership, working collaboratively with a wide range of people and organisations

Spirehouse Recruitment, a specialist Social Housing recruitment agency, has been instructed in the recruitment of a new Chief Executive for Sutton Coldfield Charitable Trust (SCCT).
The principal objectives of SCCT are to provide Almshouses and make grants to support individuals and organisations within the boundaries of Sutton Coldfield.
They are a truly community-focused charity, with the origin of SCCT traced back to when Bishop Vesey of Sutton Coldfield persuaded Henry VIII to grant a Charter in 1528. Throughout a long history, SCCT has improved the lives of generations of people in Sutton Coldfield, particularly those in the greatest need. It has sustained its original core priority to alleviate suffering while redefining and extending its benefits to reflect changing times and needs.
As the Chief Executive of SCCT, you will be responsible for providing leadership, strategic direction, and effective management to drive the mission, development, and impact of the organisation. You will work closely with the Board of Trustees, employees, and local community organisations to lead SCCT in fulfilling its objectives and making a meaningful difference in the Sutton Coldfield community.
The Board is seeking a part-time Chief Executive, working three days a week with an FTE salary of £85,000-£90,000 per annum.
There are three main functions of the role: overseeing operation of SCCT’s Almshouses and significant grant-making activities; supporting management of SCCT’s investments (principally a collection of properties, and an investment portfolio), and ambassadorial leadership of the charity in the community.
The role of the Chief Executive for SCCT will be varied, with the following functions covering a healthy but not all-encompassing overview of the post:
- Working with colleagues and Trustees to oversee polices, practices and procedures to ensure the efficient and effective management of the Almshouses
- Oversee the grant funding application policies and processes whilst establishing frameworks to assess grant effectiveness and their impact on beneficiaries
- Formulating, delivering and monitoring achievements against the SCCT strategic plan in alignment with its mission, vision and values
- Working with the Finance Director, Grants Manager and Property Manager to oversee day-to-day operations including project implementation, financial management, administrative functions and workload
- Collaborate with the Board of Trustees, attending all Board and sub-committee meetings, providing regular updates, strategic insights, and recommendations. Providing support to the Board of Trustees in ensuring proper governance processes are operated throughout SCCT.
- Leading on the development and implementation of the EDI strategy
- Working with the Finance Director and Board to:
- Develop and manage SCCT’s budget and five-year forecast
- Report on financial performance to the Board and stakeholders
- Liaise with auditors and external auditors
- Manage investments, oversee major transactions and manage performance of investment partners and advisors
- Identify potential risks and challenges and ensure effective systems, processes and procedures are in place for mitigation.
- Operate SCCT in a manner which delivers long-term sustainability of this historic charity.
The Board is open to applicants from a range of careers and backgrounds, though have identified the below as essential for the new Chief Executive:
- Experience working at a senior level in a Charity, Social Housing, or non-profit organisation
- Knowledge of high-level project delivery
- Strong strategic thinking, decision-making, and problem-solving skills, including the foresight for future planning, the adaptability to change and the skill to build strong relationships
- An understanding of financial management, budgeting, and fiscal responsibility
- A passion for SCCT’s objectives and a commitment to making a positive impact on the community

•Deliver a focused HR service to provide strategic direction and leadership to support the organisation-wide HR planning and implementation of policies and procedures to ensure that the overall organisational objectives are achieved.

The successful candidate must have or be:
•CIPD membership at Chartered or Fellow level or equivalent experience

•Sound understanding and proven experience of HR processes, including but not limited to, change management, organisational development, ER case work, resourcing, compensation and benefits, policy development
•Proven experience of HR business partnering and substantial skills and experience of HR management at a senior level within in a large organisation
•A good understanding, commitment and sympathy with Islamic Relief’s Values, principles and mission
•Proven ability and experience in people and activity management as well as delegating roles and authority in a way in which enables teams to reach their targets/objectives
•Proven experience of developing and implementing strategies and work plans which help to deliver the wider organisational objectives
•Ability to guide staff development towards achieving key performance indicators
•Demonstrable experience in consultative team approaches to decision-making and innovation which motivates and drives teams forward
•Proven ability and experience in analysing data which enables sound conclusions and recommendations to be drawn to work in a way which always considers long-term goals whilst maintaining an overview of its immediate situation
•Track record of working in partnership with senior leadership teams, based on a coaching approach
• Up-to-date knowledge of current employment legislation, awareness of forthcoming employment legislation
•High level of competence in all aspects of managing employee relations
•Sound financial and time management which enables strategic goals to be achieved within budgetary constraints
•Ability and motivation to travel within UK and internationally if required
