Members work with RSS staff to support areas such as policy development, education, training, statistical communication, and statistical literacy.

The Director of Professional Services is responsible for our professional affairs activities, overseeing the creation, maintenance and application of relevant standards through our professional affairs committee, and certification and accreditation schemes. They are also responsible for member recruitment and management, ensuring we continue to attract new RSS members and partners, and that their needs are met. They also oversee a range of activities that engage RSS members (including groups that bring members together on a topic or geographical basis, RSS honours and awards, and our volunteering opportunities), securing both our impact on society and member retention. 

Informed by an in-depth understanding of the needs of members and prospective members, the Director manages these activities strategically across the organisation, bringing relevant staff together within small teams working on defined goals that support our objectives, foster a sense of value and community for all members and ultimately lead to the growth in membership and impact of the Society. 

Pension and benefits: Our defined contribution pension scheme can be joined after three months in post. Your contributions of up to 8% of salary will be double matched by the Society (making a maximum contribution by the Society of 16%). A training budget, season ticket loan, cycle to work scheme and employee assistance programme are also available.

Location: The RSS office is in central London and currently open twice a week. We offer flexible working arrangements and office attendance is encouraged but not mandatory depending on the role. In person attendance for certain meetings is required (including all staff/team meetings and governance/committee meetings that take place in person). Limited travel within the UK and internationally may be required. 
 

Working hours: 35 per week full-time. Applications for job shares, part-time and flexible working will also be considered.

Holidays: 25 days per annum, plus bank holidays and an additional close down between Christmas and New Year. 

Probation: This post is subject to a six-month probation period. 

Key responsibilities: 

Understanding needs and the changing external environment 

• Develop an understanding of the preferences and needs of statisticians and data professionals, and others interested in data and statistics, to evolve our value proposition and align member benefits to those preferences and needs 
• Undertake research to identify new target audiences for membership 
• Monitor and respond to developments and emerging trends in charities, membership organisations and other learned societies, and in statistics/data science/AI to ensure that our membership offering remains timely and relevant 
• Plan and deliver membership surveys and oversee the collection and management of member data 
• Provide robust analysis of member behaviours to forecast future renewal patterns to inform financial planning 

Development of strategies and plans 

• Drawing input from across the organisation, develop strategies for membership recruitment, management, engagement, retention and professional affairs that support the organisation’s objectives and foster a sense of value and community for all members  Lead the creation and delivery of fully costed programme plans for member recruitment, management, engagement and retention that align with key strategic goals  Support the development of wider strategies and plans across the organisation 

Programme management and delivery

About this role

Due to the significant growth phase, we require vital cornerstone funding from a new Major Gifts function that has just been established, to secure donations from high-net worth individuals, that will enable us to achieve our mission and help thousands of women to transform their lives.

The Philanthropy Manager is an exciting new role that provides an opportunity to build a new major gifts programme from scratch, raising £150,000 income by end of March 2025. About James’ Place  

James’ Place works to save the lives of men in suicidal crisis. We are a charity offering free, life-saving therapy to suicidal men at our centres in Liverpool, London and Newcastle. 

James’ Place was set up by Clare Milford Haven and Nick Wentworth-Stanley in 2008 after their twenty-one-year-old son, James, died by suicide ten days after a minor operation. James had no history of mental illness or depression and had sought urgent help for anxiety and suicidal thoughts, but didn’t find it.    
  
James' Place was set up to make the experience of finding help as easy as possible. We offer men who are experiencing a suicidal crisis a brief, intensive, therapeutic intervention in a safe environment. Men who walk through the door at James’ Place will be in a space where they feel valued and respected.  We provide a calm and peaceful environment both inside the centres and in our outside spaces, accessible to men who visit us as well as their friends and families.  The first James’ Place opened in June 2018 in Liverpool, the first of its kind in the UK. In 2022 we opened a new centre in London and in early in 2023 we launched an appeal to raise over £10m to fund three more centres across the country. Our third centre opened in Newcastle at the beginning of 2024, and we are currently raising funds to open a James’ Place in Birmingham.  We have treated over 2,800 men in suicidal crisis to date. 

About you: 

You will be a self-starter with a desire to make an impact and a connection to James’ Place, you will bring your passion, previous administrative experience and a proactive approach, to enable our fundraising team to be as efficient as possible.  Using your knowledge and understanding of a range of social media platforms and your keen interest in learning about new digital innovations, you will support us in creating digital content across our chosen channels. This role is designed to meet the debt advice needs of Oxford residents. The post holder will provide debt advice including benefit checks, ways to raise income and reduce overheads. Advice will be given by telephone/email, by appointment in person at our office, and to drop in clients at outreaches.

• Use the Citizens Advice Information System to find, interpret and communicate the relevant information.
• Research and explore options and implications so that clients can make informed decisions.
• Act for the client where necessary by negotiating, drafting or writing letters and telephoning.
• Liaise and negotiate with other statutory and voluntary organisations to progress the client’s case and ensure they receive all assistance available.
• Signpost and refer internally and externally as appropriate in order to link clients into additional relevant support .
• Ensure that all work conforms to the office systems and procedures
• Maintain detailed case records for the purpose of continuity of casework, information retrieval, statistical monitoring and report preparation.

We're looking for:

• Experience of advice work in debt and benefits. Ideally also experience in a wider range of areas - for example, housing, employment, consumer and immigration.
• Ability to work sensitively with a diverse range of clients
• An understanding of the issues involved in interviewing clients, particularly those who may be experiencing stress and anxiety.
• An ordered approach to your work and an ability to follow set procedures concerning casework and file management etc
• Ability to use IT in the provision of advice and the preparation of reports and submissions.
• Good oral communication skills with particular emphasis on negotiation and representation skills on the telephone.
• Ability to communicate effectively in writing with particular emphasis on negotiation and representation skills and on preparing grant applications, reviews, reports and correspondence.
• Numeracy skills required to understand statistics and check calculations.
• Ability to monitor and maintain own work to comply with set standards
• An understanding of and commitment to the Aims and Principles of the Citizens Advice service including the services Equal Opportunities policies.
• Ability to work independently without close supervision, to prioritise own work, meet deadlines whilst contributing to the wider Citizens Advice team.

The opportunity

As the Project Officer, you will be supporting the smooth running and development of the Community Action Groups (CAG) network in Devon. The CAG Devon network empowers community groups to act towards a more sustainable future, focussing on the areas of waste reduction, composting, sharing, reuse and repair, community energy, biodiversity and wider sustainability. CAG Devon provides community groups with the tools and support they need to thrive such as support with insurance, guidance, and training, and opportunities for networking, collaboration and sharing skills with other groups. You will be joining CAG Devon at an exciting time, as we have expanded in the last year to offer support across the whole county and with a wider sustainability focus.

What you will be doing

Day to day project support

• Responding to enquiries from groups and other organisations.
• Co-ordinating the booking of training and events, using systems such as Ticket Tailor.
• Attending CAG events and planning meetings (including evenings and weekends where required).
• Assisting with group and event risk assessments, insurance documents and related administration.
• Creation and dissemination of guides and resources to support the projects.

Publicity and communications

• Supporting development of the CAG Devon website, ensuring it is well maintained and up to date.
• Keeping social media channels up to date, generating content and building online audiences.
• Assisting groups with effective publicity for their events, including 1-2-1 social media clinics.
• Producing a regular newsletter, encompassing news, events, funding, etc. for CAG Devon.
• Producing publicity material, news releases, stories/case studies and articles for CAG Devon.
• Occasionally speaking in public about CAG Devon and the work of its members.

Administration

• Ensuring communications with CAG groups are logged within the project database.
• Ensuring mailing lists are up to date (MailChimp, SurveyMonkey, Outlook, etc.).
• Monitoring projects, utilising tools such as Excel, SurveyMonkey and our bespoke monitoring system.
• Liaising with groups and gathering documentation as part of the membership joining process.
• Supporting with quarterly and annual reporting.
• Gathering and reporting on regular website and social media analytics data.
• Assisting the project team with any other administrative tasks that they require.

The essentials

• Knowledge of the community/voluntary sector.
• Experience of maintaining and developing websites (WordPress) and social media.
• Competent IT user, particularly Microsoft packages and web.
• Previous experience in a role in communications and/or public engagement.
• Excellent organisational and time management skills to meet deadlines.
• Good communication skills (e.g. written, verbal, presentation).
• Ability to take and edit photos/videos.
• Great people skills.
• Ability to work on own initiative and as part of a team.
• Willingness to work evenings and weekends to support community engagement (approximately one to two times a month).
• Full driving licence and access to a vehicle with the necessary business use insurance.

We are seeking a compassionate and highly organised individual to work within the Welfare Benefits Team. You will be required to undertake welfare benefit checks, provide tailored advice on missing benefit entitlements and advise on wider income maximisation areas. You will also be required to provide advocacy and representation at appeal tribunals with challenging, more complex, benefit decisions.

The successful candidate will need to have experience of providing welfare benefits advice with skills in advocacy, negotiation and communication. They will be an articulate communicator with excellent IT skills suited to working in a paperless environment. You must be able to demonstrate an ability to relate to people of all ages especially older beneficiaries, in a manner which is conducive to relieving stresses and concerns by giving sound and impartial information, guidance and assistance. 

The role is based in our London HQ, with a minimum of three days working in the office per week. The successful candidate for this role will need to be Standard DBS checked and prove they have the right to work in the UK.

Would you like to work in a fast-paced environment, where you work closely with team members and are responsible for maintaining the general upkeep of our College?

We are looking for someone who is proactive and will take pride in the look and feel of the property – ensuring the standard is great for our staff and members. Ideally with some experience of maintenance or facilities with a proactive approach to solving and taking ownership of problems. A relevant trade would give you the edge but is not essential.

You will be taking responsibility for ensuring that the College is exceptionally well-maintained, well-presented and functional.  Duties include ensuring that health and safety standards are met, first line reactive repairs and maintenance is addressed, minor redecoration and accompanying contractors where necessary, and conducting daily building checks.  Events roles include ensuring that meeting spaces are set up ready for the day’s events, as well as being present for some events that are out of working hours.
