Are you looking for a pivotal role which will shape the future of a national charity working on a key social justice challenge? Are you excited to tackle a key post targeted at raising awareness of the charity’s work and bringing critical supporters and stakeholders on board? Are you an experienced communications professional who wants to use your talents to improve the lives of people across the UK? If so, then we’d love to hear from you.
As we embark on our new five-year strategy, The Hygiene Bank would like to hear from talented communicators who would like to use their skills to further the mission of this exciting anti-poverty charity.
About The Hygiene Bank
Hygiene poverty is not being able to afford many of the everyday hygiene and personal grooming products most of us take for granted. The reality of low income is that it restricts people’s options, leaving us caught between being able to heat our homes, pay the rent, eat, or be clean. It is washing hair, bodies, faces and clothes in the same cheap washing-up liquid used for the dishes. It is not being able to replace a toothbrush when needed or sharing a toothbrush because one each just isn't an option. It is having to choose between shaving foam and razors or the transport fare to a job interview.
Hygiene Poverty is the hidden crisis facing the UK. Earlier this year, The Hygiene Bank published a research report into the incidence and impact of hygiene poverty. It found that over 4.2m adults in the UK are affected by hygiene poverty, that is an additional 1.1m people into hygiene poverty since 2022 - the equivalent of the population of Birmingham.
With hygiene poverty on the rise, it is also undermining the nation’s health: 50% of those affected by hygiene poverty say that it is causing them anxiety or depression. 92% of people affected report that it limits their social interactions with friends and family. 54% of those affected have not gone to the dentist in the last 12 months. But most importantly, it’s putting people in impossible situations. A staggering 69% of adults experiencing hygiene poverty are having to make the difficult decision between paying for essential needs like food and bills or purchasing basic toiletries. 65% of parents affected by hygiene poverty have had to choose between buying hygiene products for themselves or their children.
At The Hygiene Bank, we believe that everyone deserves to feel clean. That is why our network of projects exists – to give people access to the basics they need.
About the role
This role will be part of a multi-disciplinary Communications Team working together to raise awareness of the work of The Hygiene Bank. The successful candidate will develop and deliver effective marketing and communications content, with a special focus on digital channels, to promote The Hygiene Bank’s work, partnerships, and year-round fundraising activity – including National Hygiene Week and brand collaborations – and demonstrate the positive impact donations have had on communities across the UK. We’re a people-powered movement on the verge of major breakthroughs in Parkinson’s. Together, we will find a cure.
Parkinson’s UK works with health and social care professionals to transform Parkinson’s services across the UK.
We do this through the Parkinson’s Excellence Network (PEN), a network of around 6,000 health and care professionals with a shared vision: to build an expert Parkinson’s workforce and improve health and care services for people with Parkinson’s.
We bring together and support health and care professionals to share best practice, network and collaborate, share resources and education, and drive improvements to services for people with Parkinson’s and their loved ones.
Since its establishment in 2015, the Excellence Network has provided networking and collaboration opportunities for professionals across the different regions of the UK. In England, the Excellence Network is moving to a new regional model aligned to the 7 NHS England regions. The regional model in the devolved nations will remain the same: 3 regions in Scotland, 2 in Wales and 1 in Northern Ireland.
To help us deliver this new regional model, we are looking for a healthcare professional to take on the role of Regional Clinical Lead on a consultancy basis.
To apply for the role, you will need to be based in the East of England region.
What will be expected of you in this role
You’ll:
- Be expected to co-opt a multidisciplinary leadership team to support you in your role. This team should reflect the multi-professional composition of regional services, as well as the geography and should include at least one person with Parkinson's.
- Drive engagement and participation with the Excellence Network at a regional level.
- Inspire, challenge and collaborate with the health and social care professional community to drive significant improvements to Parkinson’s services across your region.
- Act as a professional ambassador for the Excellence Network and help represent the professionals in your region.
- Engage with Integrated Care Board (ICB) leaders to help influence the development of your Integrated Care System (ICS).
- Work closely with the Professional Engagement team at Parkinson’s UK to organise and hold engagement opportunities in your region. This will include working with the team to hold and lead at least one in-person meeting in your region per year.
- Attend the annual in-person PEN National and Regional Clinical Leads meeting.
- Support the PEN national calendar of events through attendance or promotion. This includes Excellence Hub meetings and other activities centred around our national priorities.
- Work closely with the PEN National Clinical Leadership Team (CLT) to discuss and review national and regional priorities. Attend a virtual meeting with CLT 2 times per year.

We have a fantastic opportunity to join The Queen’s Reading Room - an independent charity seeking to promote the joy of literature and the benefits of reading, and to support people in beginning a lifelong reading journey. Formalised as a charity in 2023, we’re a young charity; now is an exciting time to help shape our future direction.
Here at The Queen’s Reading Room we are seeking a talented and experienced Operations Director to report directly to our CEO. As Operations Director, you will have strategic oversight of The Queen’s Reading Room’s core operations, act as the charity’s second-in-command and lead our team to be efficient, productive, and effective. The ideal candidate has proven experience of managing a team in a finance, events, operations or development role, and is comfortable in translating strategy into actionable strength for our charity’s growth.
Responsibilities:
-
Analyse internal operations and identify growth opportunities for the charity, such as partnerships and venues for events
-
Oversee financial planning and evaluations, including budgeting and leading the charity’s annual accounts and audit for the Charity Commission
-
Oversee daily operations of the charity, including Finance, Fundraising, Marketing and Content Production, leading our team to encourage maximum performance
-
Helping our Events strategy to strong profitability
-
Keeping an eye on all governance issues, such as policies to implement and update
-
Preparing board reports
-
Assist the CEO in fundraising ventures and manage relationships with donors
These cover the central duties of the role, but as we’re a small team the person in this role can also expect to work across many aspects of the charity, including: the creative vision for the charity; helping to design and manage events; helping to devise and manage neuroscience research projects; helping to devise and manage our grassroots strategy to increase the number of people reading in the UK and internationally; helping to devise the creation around national reading campaigns and helping to devise strategy around our content across our social media, website and podcast.
The goal of the Operations Director position is to secure the functionality of the charity, to drive extensive and long-lasting growth, and to manage our small, dedicated team in their operations. The person joining now will have a direct influence on the long-term direction and legacy of the charity and it’s key that they find that prospect exciting and energising.
The key qualities of our ideal candidate:
-
Excellent at problem solving, with a positive, can-do attitude
-
Practical, logical thinking, with an ability to analyse the benefits of different strategies and to create strategy from scratch
-
Brilliant people skills and a team-oriented approach, including an ability to pay attention to the needs of the team and a willingness to muck in
-
Confidence and willingness to take the lead on projects, such as our first audit and annual report
-
Resilience and focus, undaunted by the challenges that charities face, including on budget and fundraising
-
Confidentiality and discretion
-
Energy!
We’re not expecting a candidate to have all the skills needed at the start of their role, but it is essential that they have the desire and enthusiasm to learn new skills and to learn from the CEO about the running of the charity.
The role is home-based, with regular video meetings and occasional meetings in London (infrequently around the UK).
The salary is available upon request.
If you think you could be a great fit in our small but expanding charity, please submit your CV and a cover letter of no more than 500 words by midnight on the 1st August. In your covering letter you should include:
-
How your experience aligns with the responsibilities of the role
-
What you see as the challenges and opportunities of this role
-
Why you would be interested in driving The Queen’s Reading Room’s growth
Interviews are anticipated for mid-August. As a small team we regret that we may not be able to give feedback on every application. Good luck!
