The Role

The team purpose is to listen to, understand and inspire our supporters and our teams to fundraise with pride in a way that’s both easy and right for them, with the help they need to enable greater giving that is legal, ethical and inspiring to others. As our Strategic Evidence Manager, you will have the responsibility of delivering the development and curation of our strategic evidence base and will play a significant role in our mission to make dementia the priority it needs to be.

Economic Empowerment Evaluation Consultancy

Sightsavers works with partners in over 30 countries across Africa and South Asia to eliminate avoidable blindness and support the empowerment of people with disabilities to learn, earn and participate equally in society.

Sightsavers’ Empowerment and Inclusion Strategic Framework explains our rights-based approach to social inclusion and our commitment to the progressive mainstreaming of disability throughout our programming. It underpins all our social inclusion work and complements our other global strategies on eye health, education, NTDs and research. The core objectives of the unrestricted portfolio include increasing access to economic empowerment pathways for people with disabilities, removing barriers in market systems, and leveraging initial seed funding to secure larger donor investments.

Purpose

The key purpose of this evaluation is to review and document the experience of implementation from the past two years to inform future strategic decision making. Sightsavers is seeking a Consultancy to conduct a comprehensive evaluation aimed at understanding the models and approaches that demonstrate effective pathways towards inclusive employment, contributing to the evidence and knowledge base of Sightsavers’ economic empowerment portfolio. The evaluation will place a particular emphasis on how the design and delivery of programmes might be enhanced for future programmatic work including a deep dive into two specific project approaches, IT academies and agriculture.

The Consultancy will be expected to evaluate the project level data and materials as well as primary data collected and consider if and how the projects have contributed towards the programme theory of change.

Scope of Work

The Consultancy will evaluate:

• If the purpose of the unrestricted portfolio has been achieved
• What models or approaches demonstrate improvement in economic inclusion of people with disabilities
• What partnership models are effective in providing leadership on inclusive employment
• What prevents or motivates the provision of a full range of products and services by financial institutions to people with disabilities. How we can use this knowledge to drive greater financial inclusion

Key Deliverables

• Inception report drafted and finalised
• Desk review document/data review and analysis
• IT academy case study
• Malawi agriculture project case study
• Discussion of desk review and case study findings at the programme workshop

Timeline

The consultancy is expected to be conducted between December 2024 to end of August 2025.

Sightsavers will welcome expressions of interest from qualified independent evaluators or consultancy companies. An individual or team with members located in the relevant countries (Malawi, Kenya, Nigeria) would be preferred. The Consultancy and team members should have the following core competencies and experience.

Consultancy’s expertise

• Depth of knowledge conducting evaluations of economic empowerment programmes
• Previous experience working in West and East African countries, particularly Malawi, Kenya and/or Nigeria
• A proven track record of working on disability inclusion
• Previous experience developing and evaluating Theories of Change
• Proficiency in qualitative and quantitative research methods
• Ability to conduct comprehensive desktop summaries and case studies
• First class production of high-quality evaluation reports
• Understanding of the labour markets, socio-economic and cultural contexts of the programme countries
• Understanding of issues related to people with disabilities
• Strong project management skills, including planning, execution, and reporting
• Flexibility to conduct required data collection in Malawi, Kenya and/or Nigeria

A consultancy with a proven track record in the above will be procured to undertake the project through an expression of interest process.

The deadline for the Consultancy to submit their bid is Thursday 5 December 2024, 23.30pm GMT UK.

The Role

Reporting to the Head of Policy and Influencing, the Policy Manager leads the policy work and the development of UK-wide, evidence-based policy positions on key issues affecting stroke survivors or those at risk of stroke. Working closely with the Policy and Influencing team, devolved nations’ leads as well as other Association teams, they will consult with internal and external experts as well as stroke survivors as part of the policy development process and ensure final positions are disseminated and used effectively.

In a busy health policy arena, the Policy Manager oversees the identification and drafting of organisational consultation responses, ensuring submissions are backed up by evidence, informed by those affected by stroke and have impact with policy makers and audiences. 

The Policy Manager is an astute, experienced policy lead. Providing expert policy advice and support to colleagues across the organisation including local system leaders, they contribute to effective horizon scanning and message development to ensure the organisation is prepared for announcements and events in the external environment. The Policy Manager will also represent the Association at external events and sit on like-minded coalitions. They also support the public affairs work when necessary, and provide policy support for the Chief Executive and other senior leaders by preparing presentations when required.

This role will be provided on a fixed term basis, to cover maternity leave within the team.

As Policy Manager, you will be educated to degree level or relevant demonstrable industry experience and be willing to undertake training and continuing professional development. You’ll be a flexible team player and solutions-focussed.

Last year, 136,000 young people approached their council for help as they were homeless or at risk of being homeless. Even more alarming is that figure represents an increase of 58% from six years ago. Youth homelessness costs the UK economy an estimated £8.5bn, largely due to unemployment, and so the challenge can feel huge. But we already have the resources to solve it within the built environment sector. And that is where LandAid comes in.

We use our links to the UK’s property industry, harnessing its members’ direct capital, assets and skills to help tackle youth homelessness by awarding grants and investing in frontline charities, providing financial support, and brokering free advice and expertise to increase the impact of their support.

The Chief Financial and Operating Officer is an important new role for us, created to ensure we achieve our ambitions over the coming years by focusing on delivering better quality of management information, insights and analysis to the Board and leadership to inform decision making. A key early component of the role will be to develop a detailed four-year financial plan in line with our organisational strategy. We are looking for a chartered accountant who brings senior finance leadership experience either at executive director level in an organisation of similar size to ours, or deputy director level in a larger organisation, most likely within a charity setting. Overall purpose of the job  

The River Engagement and Education Officer will become a valued member of our small, friendly, and highly dedicated Community Engagement and Education Team. In this role, you will help organise river-related activities aimed at inspiring individuals and empowering them to take action for their rivers. 

You will be actively involved in the catchment area, supporting volunteer initiatives, conducting school sessions, and assisting with community workshops. Your role will include facilitating enjoyable and memorable experiences through challenges, games, and experiments, allowing participants to explore their river environments and appreciate the benefits of being close to nature. 

Additionally, you will encourage individuals to develop new skills by engaging in conservation activities such as river clean-ups, citizen science water quality monitoring, and wildlife surveys. 

Please note that this position involves regulated activities with children, so the successful candidate will need to undergo an Enhanced DBS check prior to employment.

Travel and Schedule Requirements  

This position will be based at the home address of the appointed employee, with regular use of the Trust’s desk space in Bristol. The post holder will be required to travel frequently throughout the Bristol Avon catchment for meetings, site visits, community and school events, and more. A full, current UK driving license and daily access to a vehicle covered by business insurance are essential for this role. 

To minimise travel time and reduce carbon emissions, we prefer candidates who live within the catchment area. Mileage costs will be reimbursed. Additionally, this position may occasionally require working evenings, weekends, and public holidays to fulfil the responsibilities of the role. The Trust operates a time-off in lieu system. 

Role Purpose  

This role will be pivotal in the Trust’s expansion of its community engagement and education work packages – a key strand of the Trust’s 5-year strategy (coming soon).

The role will include the following aspects:

Community Engagement Activities  

Assist with delivery of our established community engagement programmes, including: 

• Assisting in the execution of practical conservation activities for volunteers, including litter picks, vegetation management, and tree planting. 

• Leading on written / graphic communications such as social media posts, website articles and press releases. 

• Training and supporting volunteers in citizen science monitoring, such as wildlife surveys and water quality testing. 

• Leading educational sessions for schools, including assemblies, in-class workshops, and site visits to the river. 

• Facilitating engaging workshops about rivers for families with young children. 

• Preparing equipment and learning resources for activities, ensuring all items are well-maintained. 

• Taking the initiative to expand your knowledge and develop skills relevant to the role. 

• Assisting in the collection of monitoring data to support progress assessments and end-of-project reports. 

Organisation and Teamwork  

• Serve as a dependable team member, contributing to high-quality volunteering and learning activities. 

• Manage your time effectively to travel to various locations within the catchment and dedicate time to independent work from home. 

• Develop skills in prioritising your workload to ensure tasks are completed within established deadlines. 

Partnership Working and Communication  

• Serve as a welcoming representative for Bristol Avon Rivers Trust, maintaining a professional demeanour. 

• Shadow colleagues to gain experience in effective communication and collaborative practices with key partners, including Wildlife Trusts, the Environment Agency, Natural England, and Local Authorities. 

• Attend meetings, events, and exhibitions, confidently engaging with diverse audiences, such as families, schools, volunteers, and community groups.

mySociety is a small, purposeful charity which uses digital tools to help people to participate more fully in democracy, make governments and society more transparent and help people work together to address societal challenges. We’re looking for an experienced fundraiser who has the research, proposal writing and budget development experience to deliver on our fundraising strategy by securing new sources of income from grant making foundations and government programmes, coupled with the strategic planning and management skills to further diversify our income by building our individual donations. You’ll be providing maternity cover and working as part of a nimble, digital-first, and entirely remote team - you can work from anywhere in the UK! You will have the opportunity to meet your colleagues face to face at our quarterly in person team meetings.

The role requires developing existing connections and leads and identifying and building new relationships in order to deliver ~£1 million a year in funding. You’ll be our sole fundraiser, coordinating with our Chief Executive and brilliant, friendly, multidisciplinary programme teams to develop workable, fundable proposals, and to manage and report on grants, acting as the main relationship holder for funders. You will need to be inventive in seeking out potential new funders, and to quickly grasp how the organisation works, with a good understanding of how our technology-led climate, transparency and democracy programmes sit within and extend the reach of broader systems of impact. 

The ideal candidate will be an exceptional communicator, proactive and tenacious at finding and following up leads, flexible and collaborative in approach, with good knowledge of the broader funding landscape and relevant and active connections and networks.

What does the role involve?

• Deliver on and refine our four year fundraising strategy, building and maintaining a good understanding of the needs of each of our programmes, priorities and desired charitable goals

• Frame our current and planned activity to appropriately align with the priorities of potential funders

• Identify relevant restricted grant funding for projects that align with our existing priorities and new adjacent areas

This is a fixed-term maternity cover contract with a pro-rated salary in the range of £55,000 to £65,000 per year, plus pension (4% employer, 4% employee).
