We are seeking to appoint an Advocacy and Communications Officer – a vital role for our 70-strong coalition during an exciting period for our work. 

CJC is a broad coalition of NGOs, trade unions and law firms, encompassing a range of political and thematic priorities, from workers’ rights and modern slavery, to climate and the environment, global justice and the rights of women and girls, children and indigenous peoples. But what brings us together is a shared commitment to ending corporate impunity for human rights abuses and environmental destruction: in line with this, collaborative work for change alongside our partners is at the heart of all we do.

We’re at a crucial point in a campaign which spans advocacy, public communications and engagement with businesses, and seeks to ensure the implementation of a ‘Business, Human Rights and Environment Act’ in the UK. This legislation would help end corporate abuses of human rights and the environment, and make it easier for victims to access justice. At an exciting juncture for the campaign, the successful applicant will play a central role in shaping it and driving it forward, working alongside our civil society partners to do so.

What we’re looking for

The successful candidate will be highly motivated and have a real commitment to campaign for change on corporate accountability for human rights abuses.  You’ll be enthusiastic and full of ideas, able to juggle multiple deadlines and tasks, while being ready to show initiative and take ownership of your area of work. 

You don’t need to be a policy expert on our issues, but you’ll need to have the ability to rapidly gain an understanding of what we work on and why, and advocate for these issues to Parliamentarians and civil servants.

Facilitating joint work alongside our coalition partners is fundamental to everything we do, so we’re looking for someone who already has experience of working in coalitions or in the not-for-profit sector - whether in the UK charity sector or elsewhere - and who will be at ease regularly communicating with other organisations and facilitating meetings which can have multiple organisations in attendance. We need someone who recognises and understands the value of civil society groups collaborating effectively, and is good communicator comfortable working with stakeholders at multiple levels.

You will update and ensure the delivery of the advocacy strategy for the campaign, leading regular calls with coalition partners, so it’s crucial that you’re comfortable with and enjoy collaborative work with others. You’ll drive forward our engagement with policy makers, thinking up strategies for engagement and potential approaches. You will be supported by a team and engaged Board, as well as coalition partners, but will be encouraged to take ownership of your areas of work and develop proposals for action.

• Responsible for carrying out monthly balance sheet recs, leading on all trading subsidiary matters, and ensuring tax compliance, including VAT and Corporation Tax, across the organisation.

Key Responsibilities:

- The Financial Controller will assist in maintaining the high standards in the finance team and play a pivotal role in supporting the CFO in running the team.
- Prepare the annual accounts, in compliance with SORP and relevant GAAP. Work with external accountants/auditors to manage the preparation and audit of end-of-year accounts.
- Facilitate the production of the annual report.
- Lead on organisation-wide budgetary planning along with the CFO and CEO.
- Responsibility for the integrity and accuracy of the general ledger.
- Ensure efficient day-to-day financial operations within the charity, such as payroll, invoicing, and other transactions.
- Efficient and rigorous financial administration including but not limited to staff expense, bookkeeping, gift aid (and any associated schemes), P11d, bank reconciliations, payroll, the workplace pensions scheme, credit card management and invoice processing.
- Provide support and training to other staff on finance issues (such as purchasing and commissioning of expenditure, charity SORP requirements, etc.)
- Ensure all external obligations, accounts and budgets are prepared and reported in a prompt, accurate and timely manner.
- Ensure all organisational financial practices are in line with statutory regulations and legislation and evolve and ensure adherence to finance policies and procedures, including the maintenance and development of these.
- Stay up to date with any relevant changes to charity legal and financial responsibilities, for example charity commission and HMRC reporting requirements.

Key requirements and skills:

- Professional accountancy qualification (CIMA, ACA, ACCA) with significant experience in financial control, ideally in a UK charity.
- Experience in managing year-end audits and producing statutory accounts.
- Track record of planning and budgeting for organisations with annual turnover of at least £1 million.
- Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
- High levels of familiarity and comfort with Microsoft office packages and computer-based accountancy packages – QuickBooks is currently in use.
- Experience with DEXT, ApprovalMax and SAS is desirable.
- Ability to prioritise and work flexibly in a busy environment.
- Be comfortable working in a hands-on environment.
- Enthusiastic and self-motivated with initiative.

Introduction

This is an exciting role within the Fundraising team in Wales that will enable RSPB Cymru to deliver impact. The role will primarily focus on high value including grants, charitable trusts and corporates, generating funds and support for the RSPB against annual income targets and contributing to the organisation's' purpose of saving nature. What's the role about?

As Fundraising Officer you will be part of a busy fundraising team within RSPB Cymru, proactively researching and pursuing funding opportunities and relationships that meet the need of Wales Delivery Plan and overall strategic objectives of the RSPB.

You will work to agreed income targets, maximising funding opportunities and playing your part in delivering the agreed fundraising plan, working with a range of departments on specific projects to meet funder and project timescales.

You will compile financial claims and monitor and report progress, and action needed against targets and KPIs to stakeholders to ensure appropriate oversight of income streams.

You will play a critical role in updating and utilising contact databases and CRM systems to ensure accurate records are kept to facilitate effective contact management across the organisation.

You will provide excellent customer experience to all existing and potential funders, donors and supporters to ensure ongoing relationships, future donations and support, and safeguard the RSPB's reputation and brand.

Essential skills, knowledge and experience:

• Working knowledge and application of relevant Chartered Institute of Fundraising, Fundraising Regulator and Charities Act regulations and guidelines.
• Relevant understanding of fundraising, including supporter motivations
• Excellent written and verbal communication skills with the ability to interpret complex information and present it with clarity.
• Persuasive negotiator with the ability to influence.
• Competent user of Microsoft Office.
• Able to work under own initiative and prioritise work in order to get the right things done, with the confidence to ask for support and direction where needed.

About the Role

MSI provides services via our Outreach, Public Sector Strengthening and MSladies channels to underserved and marginalised communities. In MSI we call these “Pillar1, Leave no-one behind channels”. These channels are the core of our high impact delivery (high impact clients, adolescents, those living in poverty).  

Specifically, the role is accountable for: 1) engaging and representing MSI in sector dialogue relating to Pillar 1 to contribute to sector learning, influence and impact; 2) development of pillar 1 operational best practices that can be cascaded across MSI countries to further improve impact; 3) developing MSI overarching “Leave no-one behind” strategy and leading testing of new models of service delivery  

The Director is a member of the Senior Leadership Team of MSI and is a member of the Technical Services Team. This role reports to the VP & Director of the Technical Services Department. A strong background in health system strengthening is crucial, including familiarity with different health system frameworks and how they contribute to overall system performance.
• Significant technical experience at an advisory level in SRHR. Have designed and produced best practice guidelines or training materials related to SRHR best practices, and operations, especially in remote service delivery, SRHR in the public sector; or in reaching adolescents. An understanding of global and regional SRHR trends, as well as awareness of the latest research and evidence-based practices, will be invaluable in this role.

Leadership and Governance Officer (Maternity Cover)

Job Profile 

The leadership and Governance Officer is a key role that enables CAFOD’s Leadership (the Executive Team) and Governance (the Board of trustees) teams to fulfil their remits well through sound administration, organisation, and relationship-building skills. 

The post sits at the centre of CAFOD and will have a broad overview of key issues affecting CAFOD’s work and the management mechanisms in place to address them.  The post holder will have proven experience in providing sound administrative and organisational support at a board/senior management level. This includes excellent communication and interpersonal skills with an ability to interact across different cultural settings. They will have experience in setting meeting agendas, following up on key actions and experience in forward planning with excellent project management skills to support the Board of Trustees. 

The post holder will ensure: 

• That the governance of meetings and functions in CAFOD (Board of Trustees and relevant committees) are well planned, effective and documented transparently. 

• That governance reporting requirements are fulfilled to a high quality and in a timely fashion. This includes minute-taking, serious incident reporting and follow-up actions. 

• That they keep abreast of changes in the governance environment and ensure CAFOD is following charity commission regulations appropriately, engaging with relevant Directors accordingly. 

• That key stakeholders receive a high-quality service from the small Directorate team. This includes CAFOD colleagues and supporters, Trustees, Catholic Church officials and members of the public. 

The role is part of the Governance Team, which has a broad, cross-organisational remit, working closely with CAFOD’s Directors.  

The post holder will also manage the Leadership and Governance Assistant who provides direct support to CAFOD’s Executive Director and Executive Team. Line management of this post holder is provided by the Executive Director.

Key Responsibilities 

Ensuring effective Governance (60%) 

• Acting as Secretary to the Trustees and Committees, ensuring that the annual meeting cycle (Governance Calendar) is followed, records of meetings are kept and that external submissions (e.g. the annual report, serious incidents, and other reporting) take place in a timely manner. 

• Ensuring Trustee and Trustee committee meetings are well-planned (dates, papers, agendas, attendance, etc.) and well-run (including guidance for Chair, minuting, follow-up, action tracking, etc) and that follow up actions are monitored and undertaken.

• Liaise with Trustees on governance matters, including due diligence requests, and events, planning a schedule of Trustee travel to international programmes. 

• Overseeing the recruitment and induction of trustees to CAFOD’s Board and coordinating their on-going training and development in conjunction with the Governance Lead Trustee. 

• Manage the policy review processes and document management with support from the Leadership and Governance Assistant. 

• Ensuring relevant policies come to the Board of Trustees for review in line with the schedule of reporting as outlined in the Governance Calendar. The meeting calendar dates are reviewed on an annual basis in October (so next review is October 2025). 

• To be responsible for CAFOD Trustee’s Annual Report being produced in a timely and accurate way, commissioning a consultant. 

• Liaising with the Executive Members regarding governance matters ensuring that they are able to provide relevant and accessible information in a timely manner. 

• Assist with the communication of CAFOD’s governance work with key donors, supporters and other stakeholders. 

• Working with the Governance Lead Trustee to implement any necessary improvements in CAFOD’s governance mechanisms.   

Ensuring the effective running of the Executive Team (25%)  

• Providing strategic guidance on governance issues and support to CAFOD’s Trustees and Leadership Team. 

• Managing the Governance and Leadership assistant to ensure that Executive Team meetings are well-planned (dates, papers, agendas, attendance, etc.) and well-run (including minuting, follow-up, action tracking, etc.). 

• Having a broad oversight of all critical projects and support the team to deliver its objectives on time and to budget. 

• Brief the Executive Team on matters arising as needed especially governance. 

• Process organisational grants and memberships. 

• Alongside the Governance and Leadership Assistant, maintain an overview of CAFOD’s key contacts and relationships with the Catholic Church 

Support to the Director (15%) 

• Working closely with the Executive Director in planning trustee board meetings, following up on necessary actions and ensuring that papers and other necessary information are well produced, accurate and timely. 

• When the Governance and Leadership assistant is absent, to manage the diary of the Executive Director. This includes broad insights to plan effective use of their time, including sufficient time to follow up on actions and to prepare for internal and external commitments. 

• Provide support on Budget monitoring for the team with input from the Executive Director and L&G assistant. 

• When required monitoring the ED inbox, ensuring that requests are followed up and that communications are drafted and signed off, as necessary. 

• Forward planning and ensure coordination of travel. 

• Prepare briefings and presentations for the ED when required. 

People Management 

Lead, manage, develop and support the Leadership and Governance Assistant by championing CAFOD’s purpose and values through building strong and safe working relationships, setting SMART objectives and conducting performance reviews, and nurturing staff career development.  Encouraging collaborative ways of working and aiding staff to be adaptable to change whilst engaging with the external and internal context.
