Job description

BE THE STORYTELLER: Volunteer Grant Writer for SUNSHINE Charity Startup

Location: Remote (Flexible Hours)

Type: Unremunerated Volunteer Role (Support Team)

Commitment: Approx. 3 hours per week (Flexible, project-based)

The Crisis We Face: Loneliness

Join us to fight the invisible epidemic. Chronic social isolation is not just sadness—it is a public health crisis with a mortality risk comparable to smoking 15 cigarettes a day. At SUNSHINE, we are a passionate, 100% volunteer-run startup dedicated to providing a clear path back to connection for Londoners suffering from deep loneliness and digital exclusion.

We have the proven model (The Ladder of Connection) and the data-driven strategy. Now, we need a compelling writer to translate our urgent need and powerful impact into successful seed funding applications.

The Role: Volunteer Grant Writer (Support Team)

We are seeking a highly articulate and organised Volunteer Grant Writer to join our crucial Support Team. This role is fundamental to our initial launch, as you will be responsible for researching, preparing, and submitting applications to secure the grants necessary to cover our essential operational costs (e.g., volunteer training, laptops, compliance fees).

You will be the voice that convinces funders that SUNSHINE is the most effective way to tackle loneliness in the capital.

Key Responsibilities for Launch & Growth:

  1. Grant Research: Proactively identify relevant trusts, foundations, and corporate giving programmes (e.g., National Lottery Awards for All, small community foundations) that align with SUNSHINE's mission (health, isolation, digital inclusion).

  2. Application Drafting: Write compelling, evidence-based, and technically accurate grant proposals, using our WEMWBS data and programme metrics to clearly demonstrate public benefit and measurable outcomes.

  3. Needs Translation: Work closely with the Treasurer and Programme Lead to accurately translate project costs (e.g., '10 Laptops for Digital Inclusion') into grant application budgets, ensuring financial transparency.

  4. Submission & Tracking: Manage the submission process, adhere to strict application deadlines, and maintain a centralised tracker of all submitted and planned applications.

  5. Storytelling: Craft compelling narratives that illustrate the urgent need for our services and the life-changing impact of our Ladder of Connection model on isolated individuals.

Why Volunteer with SUNSHINE?

  • Maximum Impact: Your successful applications will unlock our charity's potential. Every grant secured is a direct investment in the safety and delivery of our core programmes. You are turning words into action.

  • The Mission: This role allows you to combine your writing talent with a heartfelt mission. You are not just writing proposals; you are writing lifelines for vulnerable Londoners.

  • Flexibility: This is a fully remote role allowing you to fit your commitment around your existing schedule, contributing on a project-by-project basis while still being a core part of our founding team.

Who We're Looking For

You are a strong, persuasive writer with a track record of securing funding (charitable, corporate, or academic) or extensive professional experience in bid writing, marketing, or technical documentation. You must be highly organised, self-motivated, and possess a meticulous eye for detail to ensure compliance with application guidelines. Familiarity with the UK grant-making landscape is highly beneficial.

If you believe that the right words can unlock the funds needed to defeat loneliness, and you are ready to put your writing skills to an inspiring use, we want to hear from you.

APPLY NOW and become the crucial voice that secures SUNSHINE's future.
