Job description

Bring your skills and experience to help ensure that the very best support is provided for the mums and children who attend our project.

We believe all children have the right to a secure, safe place to play, healthy food, engaged, informed parents, and access to support, no matter what their family circumstances.

The Magpie Project provides a safe and fun place for mums and pre-school children suffering in temporary or insecure accommodation.

What will you be doing?

The Magpie Project is looking for a new trustee to join our board. Our trustees play a vital role in making sure that Magpie achieves its core purpose. They oversee the overall management and administration of the charity. They also ensure that Magpie has a clear strategy and that our work and goals are in line with our vision. Just as importantly, they support and challenge the executive team to enable the charity to grow and thrive, and through this, achieve our mission. Board members have a collective responsibility. This means that trustees always act as a group and not as individuals.

Average time commitment of 3-8 hours a month.

What are we looking for?

· Experience in HR, Immigration, Homelessness, VAWG charity sectors, or law welcome.

· A level of fluency in written and spoken English to engage with meetings and documents.

· Prior experience of charity governance is not necessary for this role and training will be provided.

We are keen to hear from those whose background and experience resonates with that of the women we support; applicants from a West African, Middle Eastern, Albanian heritage and those with experience of forced migration or homelessness.

We are also currently recruiting for a Chair. If you have not held a Chair role before but are interested in doing so, we are open to you joining as a Trustee in the first instance and the current Chair will support you to step up into the Chair role over an agreed period of time.

 What difference will you make?

“Being a trustee at The Magpie Project brings skills and experience to the charity that enables us to support the staff and volunteers and ensure that the very best support is provided for the mums and children who attend the project. Trustees bring guidance, governance and support to the staff, they create a well-governed charity that makes everyone feel safe. Really though the difference the role makes is to the trustees themselves. We get to give a small amount of our time and skills to the warmest, most inspiring, and wonderful group of mums, children, volunteers, and staff and become part of the unique Magpie family. The charity provides a safe place where everyone is heard and their stories believed and valued, people from across the world come together in a way that can only be described by experiencing it. Being a part of that restores my faith in human kindness and strength, so the real benefit is to me and my fellow trustees.”

Sam Ward - Trustee at Magpie Project
