The Head of Fundraising & Communications will operate as an effective member of the Leadership Team, reporting directly to the CEO and acting as the strategic lead for the charity’s fundraising and communications activity.

Given the fluctuating nature of statutory income (currently c.75% of total income) it will be the responsibility of the Head of Fundraising & Communications to develop and implement a fundraising strategy that enables the organisation to diversify its income portfolio, ensuring a sustainable funding model that spreads risk and allows for greater donor engagement.

There is a blank canvas to be creative and try new things, with lots of scope for the successful applicant to determine where the network opportunities might lie, build long term relationships and develop an exciting programme of external communications and engagement.

Key Responsibilities:

• Operate as an effective member of the Leadership Team, working collaboratively to ensure the delivery of organisational objectives.
• Develop, lead and deliver the fundraising strategy – focused on diversification and sustainable income whilst remaining hands on in the establishment of new income streams.
• Establish clear stewardship plans for all supporters, maximising their engagement with the charity.
• Develop and implement the communications strategy – utilising external comms to engage supporters and underpin income generation whilst raising awareness about the issues faced by unaccompanied child refugees.
• Oversee the generation of tailored, multimedia content that raises awareness of the charity and drives increased support.

Person Specification:

• Aligned with the charity's values of: Respect, Integrity, Passion, Grace, Compassion and Wisdom.
• Proven expertise of fundraising across different income streams (e.g. trusts and foundations, community, regional, philanthropy). Expertise of developing new income streams from scratch/a low base would be beneficial but not essential.
• Relational approach – focused on developing long term commitments and support from key stakeholders and donor audiences.
• Experience of working in a communications role/closely with communications teams to maximise the opportunities to engage externally and increase support/awareness.
• Creative approach to fundraising, with realistic ambitions within a small charity environment.

As Head of Advice, you will ensure delivery of high-quality advice services across multiple channels, maximising engagement and access. 

Key responsibilities include:

• Ensuring that advice services meet local needs, are effectively managed, consistently delivered and developed to achieve funder requirements, agreed KPIs, accreditation and contractual obligations, client outcomes and regulatory requirements.
• Ensuring that clients and the charitable objectives remain at the heart of the service.
• Working as part of the senior leadership team to support the Board of Trustees and CEO to develop and monitor the strategic plans that reflect the mission, vision and values of the organisation.
• Developing and maintaining stakeholder relationships

Crucial to the role is a strong understanding of advice and advice issues e.g. housing, debt, employment, benefits etc in order to support the team with complex work and oversee QAA.

About the role

This is an exciting opportunity to join our friendly team and use your fundraising experience to make a real difference to the lives of vulnerable children and families. As Head of Fundraising, you will lead a team of two fundraisers to develop relationships and generate income from charitable trusts, statutory sources, individuals, schools and parishes.

This is a diverse and rewarding role where you can work closely with our project teams and see the direct impact of your efforts. The fundraising team is also actively involved in service delivery and this role will be instrumental in helping to distribute gifts and food to hundreds of disadvantaged families at Christmas, as well as helping families in crisis via our Crisis Funds.

You will also play an important role in the senior management team, helping to shape the charity’s overall strategic direction and ensure that many more disadvantaged children and families can access the support they need and have hope of a better future.

What we are looking for

We are looking for someone with at least four years’ fundraising experience who is keen to use their skills to help CCS grow our income. A proactive and flexible approach is also a must! The successful candidate will:

• Have a proven track record of securing income in excess of £300,000 p.a.

This role comes at an exciting time with the opportunity to lead the growth of MQ’s Development Team as we expand our capacity across all these areas of income generation. MQ currently has at least one role under each area and there is desire, supported by the board of trustees, for further recruitment to strengthen each as needed.

We are happy to consider people who want to work full-time (35 hours), or four days per week (28 hours).

Here's a summary of your key responsibilities:

• Provide inspirational leadership to the MQ Development Team, managing the current team of five to deliver our £3m 2025 budget
• Develop, oversee and actively lead the implementation of a fundraising strategy which exploits a wide range of fundraising opportunities, maintains diverse and sustainable income streams, and builds the organisation’s unrestricted income capacity to meet its aims and objectives.
• Lead by example, personally building and managing a pool of 6 figure prospects to deliver against targets within your area of speciality (major donor, trusts and/or corporates), with a focus on new business across the team
• Potential to help MQ expand its high value fundraising on an international scale
• Collaborate across MQ’s teams, including Research, Marketing and Finance, to develop MQ’s list of fundraising products and proposals
• Refine and deliver MQ’s high value tracking and reporting on financial and activity KPIs, working closely with the Senior Data and Compliance Manager and using our CRM, Raiser’s Edge NXT
• Build and monitor annual Development Team income and expenditure budgets and work with MQ’s Executive to provide regular updates against progress and reforecasting as needed
• Drive innovation in fundraising activity in order that MQ can stand out – improving current approaches but also developing new behaviours, projects and activities to win new funding through excellent stewardship and cultivation
• Capitalise on the expertise and networks of MQ’s senior volunteers, including working closely with MQ trustees and other Development Team colleagues to maximise existing opportunities for introductions, including the Lord Mayor’s Appeal
• Develop MQ’s ability to carry out targeted and systematic research to establish new high value prospects utilising existing networks, the MQ database, search engines and referrals

About you:

This role is for you, if you have fundraising experience with grants and foundations as well as corporate fundraising and/or new business acquisition experience. This means you will have experience in stewarding and securing new gifts from foundations as well as researching new opportunities to apply for funds.

You will also be skilled in understanding and translating complex information and turning it in to compelling written proposals, for grants, corporate partnerships and major donors.

You will be driven to ensure that projects are delivered to the highest possible standards and be a sophisticated communicator with the confidence to build relationships with and inspire colleagues and donors.

We do require someone who is proactive, hardworking and results-focused.

Experience of Blackbaud’s Raiser’s Edge/NXT is desirable but not essential.
