Trustee Vacancy, Midlands
Voluntary Role. Reasonable travel and other expenses reimbursed.
First time trustees are very welcome to apply! Full training given
Help us deliver our Vision of a Midlands Region where no one goes hungry and where children don’t go to school on an empty stomach
Last year, our food helped over 500 frontline charities and community groups across the Midlands to provide 13 million meals.
FareShare Midlands (FSM) is the region’s largest food redistribution charity. We take good-to-eat surplus food from the food industry and get it to our Members - frontline charities and community groups all over the Midlands. We turn an environmental problem into a social solution.
Last year we redistributed almost 5,794 tonnes of food from our warehouses in Birmingham, Leicester and Nottingham. It is sorted and stored by our dedicated teams of staff and volunteers, and then redistributed to around 800 Members including food pantries and cafes, homeless shelters and drop-in centres.
These local organisations turn the food into food parcels, affordable shopping and delicious meals for people of all ages. As well as food, our Members provide vital support to families and the elderly, many of whom are facing challenging circumstances and living in poverty.
Last year our food reached more than 83,000 vulnerable people every week, providing 13 million meals. At the same time, we are growing our Employability Programmes to help people gain work experience, skills and jobs.
Our Purpose at FareShare Midlands is to Fight Hunger, Tackle Food Waste and to Create Opportunities.
The Role
Our Trustees set the strategic direction for the organisation, ensuring alignment to our values and are responsible for setting organisational strategy, policy, defining goals, agreeing the financial plan and evaluating performance.
We are looking for you to bring your life experience, insight, expertise and skills together with the enthusiasm and commitment to helping to reduce food insecurity and unnecessary food waste. You will have a passion for the work we do, have an understanding of poverty and inequality and a commitment to our values around a fairer and more equal society.
We welcome applicants who have little or no Trustee experience but a strong desire to be part of a force for good and helping to create lasting change. An inquisitive mind and confidence to interrogate information provided to you by the Leadership Team.
It is imperative for us to have a board which reflects a range of backgrounds and identities and, most importantly, represents the people we exist to support, as we believe that such increased diversity will improve our creativity and decision making.
We welcome applications from anyone enthusiastic and interested about the work we do and a desire to help us create lasting change through the work that we do. We are particularly keen to talk to people with experience in; Finance, Fundraising; Food Industry; Employability; Marketing, PR or Communications; Business Development and IT; Transport/logistics and Warehousing and distribution.
You will work with our existing board of trustees and our Chief Executive who are ably supported by a Senior Management team as well as our staff and volunteers who all share a passion to make a difference for those who need the food we distribute.
The Commitment
The trustee board meets quarterly (January, April, July and October). Meetings are usually on a Saturday morning and last for 2-3 hours, often remotely. Plus one strategy day/board development day per year. Generally, board members have the opportunity to be part of or chair a committee too.
To Apply:
If you feel you have the passion and interest for the role we would love to hear from you. Please send an up-to-date CV or LinkedIn profile along with a supporting statement stating how your skills and experience would add value to the Board, as well as why you are interested in joining us.
Do let us know if there is anything we can do to support your application, and if you have any individual needs or need any adjustments.
The client requests no contact from agencies or media sales.

Do you want to support the running of a longstanding, free and highly-effective counselling service for young people?
You could be a trustee for Bracknell-based charity, Youthline.
Set up in 1988, now a Charitable Company Limited by Guarantee, we have just celebrated 35 successful years, offering more than 600 counselling hours to young people every month. Demand and complexity of services continue to increase, and we have thus improved space and availability to meet that demand.
Our anniversary year meant a new logo, and in 2023/24, our income was maintained at £220k, with a successful funding bid. Of course, income-generation remains a high priority, as for all charities.
The role and what we are looking for in a new trustee
Trustees are the people who make the top-level decisions for our charity. Our Board includes people with experience and skills in governing a youth counselling charity, and we require new trustees to have empathy with our cause and our beneficiaries.
You don’t necessarily need prior experience of charity trusteeship, as full induction and guidance from our trustees and staff will be provided, including access to external training, as needed.
We are looking for new trustees with some skills or experience in:
- Income-generation
- Employee & volunteer support/HR
- We also are looking for ‘general’ trustees who are interested in our mission and services
If you are unsure your abilities or experience fit our needs, please ask: we’re flexible how people can contribute to our charity. If you can think strategically and plan long-term, you have the primary skills needed by our trustees; you’ll also need to be able to work collectively with other Board members. Support from our paid employees is always available, as they deal with the day-to-day running of the organisation.
We are a charity not a business, but we apply business principles to governing our organisation. We are looking for people from a variety of backgrounds to join our Board, and want to expand the diversity of our board, in all meanings of the word, strongly welcoming applications from people from less-represented groups.
We ask for up to five hours of your time per month, less at some times of year, which includes all meetings, discussions, etc. You will need access to digital communications, as some of our charity’s business is run that way, with quarterly Board meetings face-to-face in Bracknell.
How to apply
This appointment is being managed for us by inVOLve Community Services, a charity-support organisation, who offer a no-obligation discussion by video or phone, and assistance with your application. A detailed Role Description and Person Specification can be made available to you upon request.
Trustee appointments are subject to satisfactory references and completion of a Safeguarding course.
Your CV or similar will be read by our existing trustees, and an interview offered as soon as mutually convenient.

Would you like to help tackle loneliness, one conversation at a time?
Loneliness and isolation can have devastating effects on a person’s mental and physical health. We are a registered charity providing a pathway of support to alleviate the hurt and distress, and the impact on mental and physical health, caused by loneliness and social isolation.
We are seeking Volunteer Drivers, to provide transport in their own vehicle, bringing Friends (people who use our services) to and returning them home from an Archway supportive social group. Occasionally we organise Archway Fundraising activities or events where may be asked to provide transport to an Archway Fundraising activity or event. Some Archway Friends (people who use our services) are unable to attend a supportive social group independently, mainly due to physical barriers to public transport. Transport delivered by volunteers enables Friends to access the supportive social group, in turn alleviating loneliness. The groups may be the only opportunity for Friends to meet with others. Each Friend is invited to one group per month either in Oxford or Abingdon so transport volunteers usually offer one trip per month or more if they like.
We ask volunteers to think of this as a longer term volunteer role due to the training and time we take in order to give our volunteers, and Friends, the very best service. You will also need to consider occasional time spent in training for your role and for continuous development.
For all our roles:
Enhanced DBS checks for working with vulnerable adults (formerly called criminal records bureau checks) which we will organise (no cost to this) and two references are required.
For any roles involving driving Archway Friends, we will need to see evidence of insurance and driving license as well as MOT and tax documents for the vehicle to be used.
We will happily cover out of pocket expenses (eg mileage).
We provide training relevant to the roles as well as ongoing supervision, guidance and support for all volunteers.
Smart Works is a dynamic, high profile and fast-growing UK charity that dresses, coaches and empowers unemployed women for success at their job interview. After visiting Smart Works, 63% of clients secure a job within a month, gaining financial independence and transforming their lives.
The Smart Works service is delivered in 11 centres across the UK. Over the past ten years, Smart Works has helped over 35,000 women. It is our mission that any woman who needs our service should be able to find her way to a Smart Works centre. More information about who we are can be found on our website.
In April 2022, Smart Works launched a new Three-Year Plan that will see the charity double the number of women helped annually from 5,000 to 10,000 women a year. To achieve this, we will grow our existing centres and open new centres in areas of need. We are well on the way to achieving our goals.
About This Role
We are seeking up to 3 new trustees to join our Group Board. Smart Works is led by a Group Board of passionate and dedicated trustees, who are responsible for the governance and strategic direction of Smart Works. We also work closely with our 6 local Boards across the country.
“Over the last 10 years, Smart Works has grown from an unerring passion to support unemployed women into work, into a dynamic and successful charity transforming the lives of women and communities across the UK,” says Smart Works Chair Julietta Dexter. “New members of the Board will have a key role to play in ensuring that Smart Works continues to deliver our ambitious targets for growth, whilst ensuring that we meet and exceed the expectations of our clients. The role of trustee is hugely rewarding, challenging and enjoyable in equal measure.”
Our current skills audit illustrates that we are particularly looking for candidates with expert skills in the fields of commercial property, fundraising and employment support (for example, organisations that regularly refer to Smart Works). By drawing on their expertise, the successful candidates will be able to advise Smart Works as it looks to develop and expand in these areas.
For more information on the Trustee position, please find the full role profile attached.
How to Apply
Please apply via our website.
Shortlisted applicants will be invited to an interview after 30th September. The process will be led by the Nominations Committee. There will be a shortlisting process followed by two rounds of interviews with formal approval to take place at the Board meeting in October.
References and a Basic DBS check will be taken up prior to appointment.
We particularly welcome applications from black, Asian and minority ethnic candidates, disabled candidates, and candidates with lived experience of female unemployment as we would like to increase the representation of these groups at Smart Works. Smart Works promotes equity, diversity, and inclusion in our workplace. We make employment decisions by matching the Charity's needs with the skills and experience of candidates. These decisions are made irrespective of age, disability (including hidden disabilities), gender, gender identity or gender reassignment, marriage and civil partnership, pregnancy and maternity, race, religion or belief, or sexual orientation.
At Smart Works we will apply suitable measures to keep your information secure in accordance with our Privacy Policy (a current version of which is available on our website)
We exist to give unemployed women the clothing, coaching and confidence they need to succeed at interview and get the job.
