Family Thing Dance is a small but growing charity that provides inclusive dance classes for people with learning differences and diverse abilities. We are looking for Trustees to join our Board to offer governance and support to grow the charity. 

The dance base is commercial dance and hip-hop. Family Thing's mission is to provide opportunities for empowerment, support and a sense of belonging using dance as a vehicle to reach these aims. 

Family Thing is passionate about providing these dance opportunities for everyone.  There are many reasons why. Mencap lists the main benefits of taking part in leisure activities as improving physical and mental health, personal social skills, self-worth and confidence, and social attitudes (Mencap, 2019). Yet despite these widely understood benefits, only 16.8% of people with a learning disability take part in a sport or physical activities at least once a week, compared with 39.9% of the general population (Sport England, 2018). Additionally, there is a great deal of evidence that inactivity is a major contributing factor of ill health in people with learning disabilities. Only 9% of participants in a 2016 review met the minimum recommended guidelines for physical activity (Dairo et al, 2016).

We know that organisations like Family Thing play a role in the well-being of people with learning disabilities by providing activities that promote good physical health as well as positive psychological and social stimulation, and offers a way to overcome situations such as loneliness and anxiety. We know that a positive impact of Family Thing is the increase in social engagement and improvements in physical and mental well-being for those who participate in our classes.

Activities: Family Thing offers free or subsidised, supportive, fun and creative dance classes to diverse groups of children, young people and adults. During each session, dancers are invited to create their own ‘dance hero persona’, and have opportunities to express themselves as individuals with the support of the group. There is a focus on strengthening their sense of community through the concept of “supporting your crew”. As defined by those who attend the groups, the overall aim is to create a “big family” that’ll dance altogether basically!

What are we looking for?

At this particular time we are keen to find people with a financial services background and someone who may be willing to take on the role of Treasurer in due course and/or someone with marketing skills, including digital marketing.

Experience

• Experience of the dance community (desirable but not essential)
• An understanding of equality, diversity and inclusion and a desire to support those with learning differences and diverse abilities
• Leadership experience (desirable but not essential)
• Experience of delivering strategic organisational change (desirable but not essential)

It is not necessary to have previous board experience as training and support can be given

The GRAB Trust was established to address waste and recycling issues in Argyll & Bute and this year is celebrating its 25th year! GRAB recognises that the key to its work continuing successfully is through engaging the local community - the public need to be interested and active in sustainable environmental projects. • To promote increased levels of re-use through the landmark Lorn & Oban Reuse Initiative (LORI) in order to for Argyll and Bute become a Zero Waste society; offer volunteering opportunities for more local people; and offer opportunities for the long-term unemployed and community service offenders through their pioneering training and job search programme

Recently the GRAB Trust has supported over 8,000 individuals through LORI; reached over 55,000 people via social media; and engaged hundreds of participants in beach cleans and workshops. They’re now looking for new people to join the board as trustees so they can continue this vital work.

Traditionally, GRAB trustees have been residents of the Argyll and Bute area but GRAB would also welcome interest from candidates who are from further afield. New trustees are sought who offer insights and experience in:

• Buildings and properties maintenance and development, such as improvements and renewals to drive income from current GRAB buildings and securing new facilities for expansion;
• Any type of recycling programmes and/or environmental protection;
• Fundraising, in particular trusts and foundations or securing governmental/grants funding;
• Stakeholder or partnership development, locally and beyond the Argyll and Bute region

Exeter Community Initiatives (ECI) is seeking new Trustees

Commitment: 2-3 hours per month

ECI has an active board of trustees known as the ECI Council. The trustees set the strategic direction of the organisation and oversee the governance required to deliver innovative projects and programmes that meet the needs of people in Exeter and wider Devon.

We are seeking multiple trustees to strengthen and diversify our board. We are particularly interested in hearing from people who have skills and experience in the following areas:

About the role

 As a voluntary trustee you will play an important role in the success of ECI as part of the board team. Your responsibilities will include:

LEVEL OF COMMITMENT 

All trustees are required to attend quarterly evening and one full day Board meetings.  Board meetings usually take place at the Baca main office, Loughborough, Leicestershire. As appropriate, meetings could also take place virtually.

In addition to reading papers and preparing for meetings/conference calls, Trustees may be called upon for specific advice if they have particular expertise in a given area.

The London Basketball Association (LBA) provides sustainable and regular participation in the sport of basketball whilst aiding and encouraging a variety of career paths for young people living in London’s most deprived and isolated communities. 

What is LBA looking for?

The London Basketball Association is pleased to announce that an opportunity has arisen for a Board of Trustees Chairperson to join our intensely committed organisation.

The Board of Trustees Chairperson is a pivotal role within the organisation, tasked with holding the Board and Executive Team to account, to ensure the Charity hits its mission and longer term strategic visions. This is achieved by providing inclusive leadership to the Board of Trustees, ensuring that each trustee fulfils their duties and responsibilities for the effective governance of the charity. The Chair will also support, and, where appropriate, challenge the CEO and ensure that the Board functions as a unit to achieve agreed objectives.

Time Commitments: The Board of Trustees meet 6 times per year [bi-monthly]. Meeting may be held either in person and virtually. In addition to attending and chairing board meetings, this role is required for 3 hours, bi-weekly, to support the CEO, other board members and in order to fulfil the below responsibilities.

Leadership

• Provide leadership to the LBA and its Board, ensuring maximum impact for its beneficiaries.

• Ensuring Trustees fulfil their duties and responsibilities and holding each Trustee to account where necessary.

• Ensure that the Board fulfils its duties to ensure sound financial health of the charity, with systems in place to ensure financial accountability.

Required Knowledge, Skills & Experience

Knowledge

• Broad knowledge and understanding of the voluntary sector, in particular within the Sports sector, and current issues affecting it.

• Strong understanding of funding, fundraising strategies and grant management.

• Financial management expertise and a broad understanding of charity finance issues.

• Good understanding of charity governance issues.

Skills

• A strong and visible passion for basketball (or other sports) and commitment to the LBA, its strategic objectives and, ultimately, its cause.

Founded in 2016, Little Village has grown from small beginnings in Tooting to a pan-London network of baby banks and support for families with babies and children under five. We’ve supported over 32,000 children and we’re working hard to put the need for baby banks at the heart of conversations about tackling child poverty through our role as a Founding Partner of the newly launched Baby Bank Alliance.

We’ve achieved a huge amount with an amazing team, but there’s a lot more to do, and we need more expertise to help us achieve that. That’s why we’re looking for new trustees to join our Board in 2024.

As our organisation continues to grow at pace, we are looking for some specific expertise as well as more general experience (but we don’t need any previous board or trustee experience). We’d like to appoint one trustee with experience of raising charity income and engagement as well as one or two other trustees with more general experience, especially a commercial or entrepreneurial background.

Management Committee Members Sought by thriving grassroots mental health charity at the cutting edge of advocacy service delivery in South London

Community Support Network South London (CSN) is a Brixton based mental health service user led and run mental health charity which currently provides mental health advocacy services primarily within the London borough of Lambeth in forensic, (for people with a criminal record in addition to mental health problems); in-patient and community settings.  We are seeking people to join our small and friendly Management Committee which currently has hybrid meetings on a bi-monthly basis.  Management Committee members may also get involved in other aspects of the organisation, such as: promoting the organisation, fundraising, recruitment & other HR issues as appropriate to the trustee role of a small charity.

Expenses reasonably incurred in the execution of the role (e.g. travel) will be met.

Skills/qualifications required for this role:

Understanding of what is required of a trustee, (although an induction pack and training will be provided).  Committee members will guide the work of the organisation, through policy and strategic development, funding. financial control & monitoring service provision.

Leadership, Mental Health, organisational development, management, financial and HR (Human Resources) skills and experience will be a particular asset, as will strategic development and fundraising experience.  We particularly welcome people who have experience of mental health problems and/or mental distress to join our Committee.

The Treasurer is an officer of the Trustee Board and not a paid member of staff.  The purpose of the role is to ensure that the charity’s finances and supporting financial control systems are robust and comply with relevant regulations.

The role works closely with the Chair of the Trustee Board, the Chief Executive and the volunteer Financial Accountant.

The Treasurer is responsible for chairing the Finance sub-committee, including preparing the agenda and arranging for the production of the minutes of each quarterly meeting,

Treasurer main duties and responsibilities

Financial accounts

· Every quarter, review entries on Xero made by volunteer Financial Accountant (

· Review quarterly management accounts prepared by volunteer Financial Accountant before submitting report to the Trustee Board

· Ensure that year-end accounts are prepared to in compliance with SORP (Statement of Recommended Practice) Accounting for Charities and submitted by the deadline to Charity Commission and Companies House, and make arrangements for them to be independently examined as required

Budgets and planning

· Prepare annual budget and obtain Trustee Board sign off each March

· Review and update forecast of annual outturn

Financial control and compliance

· Comply with the charity’s financial policies and procedures

·Liaise with the CEO to prepare costings for any funding bid applications

· Ensure capital expenditure authorisations and limits are followed, and prepare expenditure justifications where appropriate

· Ensure that money received is spend only on the purposes for which it was given and ensure that reports and accounts demonstrating this are submitted to funders

· Submit regular financial reports to national Citizens Advice as required, and meet all financial obligations of the Citizens Advice Membership scheme

Relationship with Trustee Board

· Provide financial advice as required to the Chair and Trustee Board

· Explain, guide and advise the Board on the key assumptions and financial implications of the budget, operational and strategic plans

· Keep the Board informed about its financial duties and responsibilities

· Ensure that all Board members have a clear understanding of the accounts presented at meetings

· Ensure that the organisation has an appropriate reserves policy and a realistic budget that meets the service’s needs

· Provide input to the risk register process

· Present accounts at the Annual General Meeting in an accessible way

· Chair the Finance sub-committee, preparing the agenda and arranging for the production of the minutes for each quarterly meeting

Treasury

· Act as key contact on the charity’s bank accounts

· Transfer money between savings bank accounts to optimise interest income

· Maximise the interest on savings by comparing available interest rates

· Review investments (in conjunction with other trustees)

· Review and update cheque signatory and electronic payment authorisation

· Authorise salaries and PAYE payments to HMRC

Other (annual)

· Review reserves policy

· Prepare salary review (in conjunction with Personnel Committee)

· Review office insurance policy

· Review Gift Aid claim prepared by volunteer Financial Accountant

The Association for Young People’s Health works to understand and meet the particular health and wellbeing needs of 10-25 year olds. We are recruiting several voluntary positions to join our Board of Trustees and Advisory Council.

We are looking for Trustees who have experience of working with small charities and fundraising. We are also looking for members of our Advisory Council who have experience in a broad range of skills including education. All candidates should have a commitment to improving young people’s health and AYPH’s vision and mission.

Time commitment: The board meets quarterly during the year online; one of these meetings will incorporate a strategic away day and AGM in London. There are opportunities for ad hoc committee work.

ADVISORY COUNCIL

As an Advisory Council member of AYPH you will support the Board of Trustees in its governance function by discussing and prioritising issues in the young people’s health field from a broad professional perspective. The Advisory Council responds to the needs of the AYPH membership as well as reflecting and responding to the views expressed by other professionals in the field.

Time commitment: The Advisory Council meets twice a year online, with opportunities to attend the away day and other AYPH events.

Both Trustees and the Advisory Council link with our Youth Advisory Panel to explore Young Ambassadors’ perspectives on young people’s health together.
