What is a Divisional Secretary?
The is a key role involving administration and coordinating people. As the first point of contact for the division you will play a key part in promoting SSAFA locally, matching clients to volunteer caseworkers and supporting volunteers to get the best outcomes for their clients.

We’ve been supporting the Armed Forces community since 1885. Our clients come from all backgrounds and age groups and may have served in WW2 or in a more recent conflict like the Falklands or Afghanistan.
There are SSAFA branches throughout the UK and overseas who support local volunteers to deliver services to veterans, serving personnel and their families. Some branches are divided into smaller divisions to ensure the best local service delivery. Each branch has a team of volunteer caseworkers, support volunteers, executive roles, and fundraisers.
We aim to provide financial, practical, and emotional support when it’s needed most. More people than ever before are coming to us for help, and you will be one of the people contacting new clients and getting them the support, they need.
When would you be needed and where would you be based?
This role is about coordination and administration. As part of your local branch, you might have access to an office, but many volunteers are based at home. The role would suit someone looking to offer a regular time commitment each week.
What would you be doing?
- Acting as the first point of contact for SSAFA in the local area
- Taking enquiries from potential clients and potential volunteers
- Matching new clients to available caseworkers
- Supporting caseworkers, particularly new volunteers
- Working with the local publicity officer to promote SSAFA locally.
- Providing reports to the local SSAFA branch and to SSAFA’s Central Office
- Maintaining accurate records on our on-line case management system
- Coordinating SSAFA Visitors and Helpers (if applicable)
- Organising local meetings to keep all volunteers up to date with the latest training and information.
- Being a positive ambassador for SSAFA remembering that anyone you meet could be a potential client, volunteer or fundraiser.
- Volunteering within the standards and values of SSAFA including observing our policies such as the Volunteering policy and data protection policy (these will be covered in your training and local induction.)
The remit of this role may change over the next 12-18 months depending on the outcome of a trial currently being undertaken.

What training and support would you receive?
- Role specific training to prepare you for your voluntary role – confidentiality and boundaries, personal safety, caseworker course, caseworker IT system training, volunteer management – case management and quality. The caseworker course takes 3 days and please allow a further day for the other training.
- Mandatory on-line training modules to complete at home, so you are up to date on how to keep clients, their families safe and personal information safe.

What are we looking for?

- Good written and spoken English.
- Ability to be respectful and non-judgemental with clients, their family, other agencies and SSAFA colleagues.
- Ability to send and receive emails – you will receive your own SSAFA email address.

Shannon Trust fulfils an unmet need around adult learning, supporting people who’ve fallen through the cracks in formal education.
We know a lot of people have had negative learning experiences in the past, so our programme is designed to be different, with no exams and no classrooms. Our unique, evidence-based Turning Pages reading manuals are used by thousands of learners in prisons and the community to improve reading skills.
Prison volunteers live near to their local prison so that they can visit about once a month during the working week to nurture the growth of the Shannon Trust in their prison. They help unlock the power of reading by offering advice, guidance, training and support to prison staff and prisoner mentors who help other prisoners to improve their skills 1 to 1.
We are looking for volunteers who are able to work alone, able to give a regular, reliable commitment for ideally two years and able to deliver engaging training to groups of people in prisons. Due to the nature of the role, prison security vetting will be required.
We provide training for the role via e-learning and 4 training sessions which are a mix of live, online and group training.

What would you be doing?
- Every SSAFA Branch has different needs, however, below are the main activities of a Branch Administration Coordinator.
- Overseeing enquiries: Overseeing the administration of the branch shared inbox and post, ensuring queries are answered.
- Getting people together: Organising internal meetings, both virtually and face to face
- Planning and organising: Liaising with internal and external stakeholders to arrange events such as the Branch Annual General Meeting
- Note taking and recording: Maintaining accurate records of meetings and decisions.
- Communicating: Supporting the Branch Chair with internal communications, keeping other volunteers up to date and informed
- Tracking and ordering: Keeping a record of branch assets, ordering stationery, and ensuring maintenance of equipment
- Supporting health and safety: Supporting the Branch Chair with administration of personal, office and event risk assessments where required

Young Enterprise’s Team Programme is an enterprise journey for students who have mild to moderate learning difficulties. Designed to aid young people’s transition from education into independent living and employment, the programme develops confidence and life skills through working as a team to set up and run an enterprise.
This hands-on and highly impactful role involves mentoring and encouraging students with learning disabilities to face the challenges of running a business, and learn critical life skills, in a safe space.
Team Programme Volunteers are primarily based within schools/ colleges supporting a group of students with learning disabilities. They will volunteer alongside school staff to ensure the young people are able to flourish. Young people particularly value volunteers who can attend in person as this support their learning and development of social skills.
The time commitment can be variable depending on the particular needs of the group. At most this will involve around one hour per week, attending weekly company meetings throughout the school academic year, however in some cases may be less frequent than this.
What you will be doing
- Coaching, mentoring, and positively supporting young people with learning disabilities and autism through their business adventure
- Attending regular company meetings within the school environment
- Liaising closely with the lead teacher to achieve the best outcomes for young people

What is a Community Connection Champion?
The aim of the role is to promote connection by developing and facilitating social groups and activities within the local serving community.
Tasks will include planning group activities that are sociable and of interest to the community. It also involves coordinating and delivering sessions. You will receive training and have support from a dedicated project officer as you establish a variety of groups.
What difference will you make?
Armed Forces life can bring its challenges when a loved-one is deployed overseas, or a family must move to a new location. Some people can find themselves feeling lonely or socially isolated, they may struggle to meet and connect with new people due to their confidence, work commitments or because they don’t live in Service Family Accommodation.
Community Connection Champions will play a vital role in tackling these challenges by creating welcoming, engaging group opportunities that bring people together.
What will you be doing?
Although every SSAFA Team has different needs, below are the main activities of a Community Connection Champion:
- Creating and Planning: Working with the Project Officer to plan, develop and organise groups and activities that are best suited to their local serving community.
- Communication and Teamwork: Keeping in touch with the local Community Volunteer Coordinator and attending s meetings.
- Networking and Engagement: Reaching out with those who are interested in attending activities, providing support and encouragement for them to attend, including those who face barriers to attending.
- Facilitating group sessions: Delivering group activities in line with agreed plans, signposting attendees to external support as required and in line with SSAFA’s safeguarding policy and procedures.
- Recording and reporting on activities: Sharing activity plans with the SSAFA Project Team, tracking attendance, and encouraging attendees to complete the relevant paperwork to support Project reporting and development.
What about training and support?
- Volunteers will need to complete E-learning courses covering topics including GDPR and safeguarding plus a 1.5hr webinar which focuses on understanding the impact of loneliness and social isolation, what helps to reduce those feelings and the skills needed to develop and facilitate groups.
- Support from a dedicated Project Officer who will work with you to plan and develop the groups and activities.
- Support from your local Community Volunteer Coordinator and SSAFA’s Regional and Central Volunteer Operations colleagues.
- Access to a range of e-learning courses, resources and local opportunities to keep your knowledge and skills up to date.

A typical group might run once weekly for a 6-week period. Face to face sessions are likely to run in community venues such as community centres but we also want to explore how virtual groups can be used to support those who can’t access face to face sessions.

There are SSAFA committees on many military bases around the UK and overseas. Each one has a secretary to
makes sure that meetings are organised, volunteer information is up to date and decisions are recorded. This is a

We’ve been supporting the Armed Forces community for more than 130 years. In recognition of their service to the
Nation we aim to provide financial, practical and emotional support when it’s needed most. To do this we need
local volunteers who can ensure the community know about SSAFA and keep things running smoothly behind the
scenes.
When would you be needed and where would you be based?
This role is about communication and administration. Many volunteers can do this from home or their place of
work. The role would suit someone looking to offer a regular time commitment. You would also need to organise
and attend a number of regular meetings each year. This role is an Office Bearer with voting rights.
What would you be doing?
• Working with the committee to agree an annual plan of activity based on local need
• Providing administration for at least four meetings per year
• Monitoring volunteer numbers against the demand for support and recruit new volunteers as needed
• With the support of the Learning and Development and Volunteer Experience Teams at Central Office,
ensuring all volunteers have completed the training and mandatory tasks required for their roles.

At Rainbows, we support around 750 babies, children and young people with serious and terminal conditions throughout the East Midlands, providing support at our Hospice, in local hospitals and at home. As part of this, our Family Support Team work with families to navigate through the emotions of caring for a child who has a life-limiting condition.
As these families can be based all across the region, Keep in Touch Volunteers play a vital role in connecting families with the Hospice. Volunteers do this by making an outreach telephone call to a family; checking-in with them and signposting them to any wider support which may be needed, as well as any support or services which Rainbows may be able to provide.
Typical tasks the role could involve:
- Making outreach telephone calls to Rainbows families.
- Checking on a family’s welfare and alerting them to available support if needed.
- Relaying any concerns to the Family Support Team.
- Regularly submitting an activity log summarising their calls so we can make sure everyone is receiving the help they need.

Core tasks
Your tasks may include:
- Offering a cut and blow dry or braiding service
- Barbers offer haircuts including short back and sides, skin fade, head shave and beard trimming to our Christmas guests.
- You will be volunteering at our Health & Wellbeing Day(s). These events are an opportunity for members to access a range of health & wellbeing services from the safety and comfort of our Skylight. All treatments are clothed.
- You will be part of a specialist volunteer team which may include: Hairdressers, Masseuses, GPs, Nurses, Physiotherapists and Podiatrists.
- Our training will show you what to expect when offering hairdressing services in our Christmas centres.
Who we are looking for
- Professional hairdressers/barbers
- People who are enthusiastic about making our guests feel good
- Good interpersonal skills and the ability to interact with vulnerable guests
- A positive attitude and the ability to be friendly and welcoming to guests who may not have had a haircut for a long time
- Ability to work with the Shift Team and report any potential issues to the shift leader
- Ability to deliver Crisis at Christmas services in a fair manner ensuring that the safety of the guests and volunteers is of paramount importance at all times
- Be a positive role model for all volunteers exhibiting behaviours outlined in the Volunteers Code of Conduct
- Commitment to Crisis’ purpose and values including equality and social inclusion

Shannon Trust fulfils an unmet need around adult learning, supporting people who’ve fallen through the cracks in formal education.
We know a lot of people have had negative learning experiences in the past, so our programme is designed to be different, with no exams and no classrooms. Our unique, evidence-based Turning Pages reading manuals are used by thousands of learners in prisons and the community to improve reading skills.
Prison volunteers live near to their local prison so that they can visit about once a month during the working week to nurture the growth of the Shannon Trust in their prison. They help unlock the power of reading by offering advice, guidance, training and support to prison staff and prisoner mentors who help other prisoners to improve their skills 1 to 1.
We are looking for volunteers who are able to work alone, able to give a regular, reliable commitment for ideally two years and able to deliver engaging training to groups of people in prisons. Due to the nature of the role, prison security vetting will be required.
We provide training for the role via e-learning and 4 training sessions which are a mix of live, online and group training.

Join our amazing volunteer team in this flexible opportunity that puts you at the heart of our work supporting blind and partially sighted people. You’ll make taking part in events and carrying out volunteering easier and more enjoyable for our customers and volunteers with sight loss. You’ll take some of the stress and anxiety out of getting around and taking part in activities as a blind or partially sighted person. The help you give will encourage people to do more. What you’ll be doing • Sighted guiding / giving practical help to individuals in and around venues, so they can take part in events. • Supporting volunteers with sight loss with their volunteering activities which range from facilitating a regular community group to delivering a talk about sight loss to a local business. Your role would involve things like guiding; Meeting and greeting at group activities or creating a welcoming and interesting display stand at events. In this role you will only be helping individuals in places open to the public, often in a group setting. We will provide training in sighted guiding techniques and understanding sight loss. We are now recruiting for a fantastic Co-Chair of Trustees to join the team! They will work alongside existing Trustee, Katy Sparrow Robins, who will be moving into the Co-Chair role in March 2024.

The Co-Chairs provide leadership to the charity and its board, ensuring that the CIO has maximum impact for its beneficiaries. They are responsible for board management, support to individual trustees and support to the CEO, facilitating scrutiny of Family Volunteering Club’s strategic direction, values, policies, and operational efficiency. The Co-Chairs also play an active role in representing the organisation to a range of internal and external stakeholders. The Co-Chairs will work closely with the CEO to oversee the governance of the charity, guide the development and growth of the organisation and have an overview of strategy and finance. It is important in line with the values of the organisation, that we retain a strong sense of democracy and inclusion in how the charity operates at a board level, and the Co-Chairs will help ensure this.
