In addition, provide clear, values-based strategic organisational leadership as a key member of the Strategic Leadership Team and trusted advisor to the CEO.

We're looking for a new Facilities Manager for our Leighton Moss reserve. This is a fantastic opportunity to join the team at Leighton Moss in North Lancashire. As part of the team, you will work for one of the world’s leading conservation charities, dedicated to saving nature.

As the Facilities Manager you will be responsible for ensuring the infrastructure and support services are well maintained, operate within budget, in line with good practice and within legal frameworks. You will provide comprehensive business/operational support facilitating delivery of work programmes and an effective working environment. You will ensure RSPB is accredited by Green Dragon and compliance is maintained. You will manage the administration of the site as well as managing staff and volunteers and ensuring a high level of customer service.

Essential skills, knowledge and experience:

• You will have the self-motivation and organisational skills to effectively prioritise and deliver a large and varied workload - maintaining our buildings, supporting the visitor business and land management operations and providing admin support to managers.
• Knowledge, understanding and evidence of the key elements of ensuring well-maintained facilities and associated services.
• Ability to ensure H&S compliance is met, knowledge and experience of writing and implementing Risk Assessments and Emergency Procedures.
• Good verbal and written communications skills and ability to engage with a wide range of audiences.

• Ability to manage your own team of staff and volunteers to ensure daily cost-effective, efficient running of the facility.

Desirable skills, knowledge and experience:

• To be confident in building management and deal with trades people.
• Financial management skills to be able to manage a facilities budget (overseen by the site manager) and ensure value-based budgeting. You will work to a high degree of accuracy, flexibility, confidentiality and discretion.
• Knowledge of Environmental Management Systems, including legal compliance, quality management and sustainability of a site.
• Ability to effectively use RSPB systems including eBIS and Assemble. Also, knowledge of IT and network systems is useful.
• Ability to deal with confidential and sensitive information appropriately.
• A facilities management qualification or equivalent.
• Natural history knowledge and knowledge of conservation issues and priorities

About the role

We’re looking to recruit a Head of Grants Management to join our Financial Planning & Analysis unit which provides timely financial planning and reporting across the whole organisation. Managing a small team, you will deliver first class financial support on over 160 grants and £32m of expenditure. This will involve overseeing the outgoing grant lifecycle, including due diligence on grantees, preparation of grant agreements and amendments as well as managing the timing of payments.

As Head of Grants Management, you will lead on our grant management processes and ensure these are compliant with our standards and policies. In addition, you will provide advice and analysis to colleagues to help them deliver successful, impactful programmes. We will look to you to monitor the status of grants and provide commentary on monthly variances as well as check foreign exchange exposure on grants, collaborating with colleagues to mitigate losses. You will also provide training and advice to grant issuing teams to help ensure that budgets are well managed and ensure they have the information and support needed to make well-informed financial management decisions. Important will be the ability to conduct due diligence on new grantees, follow up on due diligence actions and review due diligence annually on existing grantees. You will play a key role in the design and implementation of a new Grants Management System too.

We’re looking for someone with:

• Hands on experience in grant management.
• Significant experience in managing, leading and coaching a team.
• Accountancy qualification (part or fully qualified) or qualified by experience with exposure to compliance activities such as due diligence.
• Experience in, and a passion for excellence in, process management, and the ability to identify and implement process improvements.
• Strong communication, interpersonal and analytical skills.

We have been lucky enough to secure funding from the National Lottery Heritage Fund for our wilder future for Herts and Middlesex Wildlife Trust Project. This is to undertake a programme of digital and cultural transformation at the Trust, creating a more efficient and effective organisation.

You’ll be part of the Trust’s Development Directorate, leading the development and delivery of the Trust’s volunteering transformation plans with the aim to improve collaboration and efficiency across the Trust.

About the role

This is a new role funded by the National Lottery Heritage Fund that will enable the transformation of how the Trust supports volunteering by delivering a programme of volunteer and staff engagement and training, and leading the set up and migration to a new cloud-based volunteer management system. The role will also lead on volunteer development with external partners as part of the project.

The postholder will require the ability to work collaboratively and to implement an agreed project plan to fixed milestones and is expected to support and embrace a positive team culture, and to uphold the Trust’s values and expected behaviours at all times. The Education Officer will enthuse young people and local communities about their local seas and amazing marine life through unique boat-based education experiences and innovative co-design education approaches. 

Hebridean Whale and Dolphin Trust (HWDT) is a marine conservation charity based on the Isle of Mull. This role is responsible for the development and delivery of HWDT’s new education project, Hebridean Marine Explorers - Connecting Scotland’s seas and communities.

The Education Officer will develop and deliver:

• a 12-week co-design project with schools resulting in a community exhibition

• a programme of digital school workshops

• boat-based floating classroom education workshops

• marine mammal research expeditions for young people

• community open boat events.

Educating young people on land and at sea is key to the role so we are seeking a confident, enthusiastic, organised self-motivator, familiar working with schools and young people, with outstanding communication skills. Experience of marine mammal surveys and the ability to identify cetacean species in the Scottish waters is also essential to the role.

We are looking for somebody experienced in teaching and delivering environmental education activities and training for young people, ideally with knowledge of co-design project delivery and its implementation within a primary school environment.

Our ideal candidate will have experience coordinating a funded project and the skills to provide effective communication, evaluation, and reporting against project targets.

The ability to work with external partners, the wider team of HWDT staff and boat crew to deliver project outcomes and a genuine interest in cetaceans and marine conservation is essential. An understanding of the workings of a charity/NGO would be an advantage.

A valid medical fitness certificate (i.e. ML5 or ENG1) and PVG check is required for the role.

Role purpose

To diversify, develop and deliver fundraising initiatives with a focus on major donors and legacies, securing significant funding for the Trust that will enable delivery of our new 2030 strategy of more space for nature, with more people on nature’s side. 

1. Main Responsibilities

1.1 Devise and deliver annual plans, together with associated budgets, in line with strategic objectives

1.2 Monitor and report on fundraising targets and budget

1.3 Line management of the Fundraising Officer

2. Major Donors

2.1 Growing the scale of donations – both the number of donors and the value of donations by managing an impactful major donor programme for the Trust 

2.2 Use the Trust’s Customer Relationship Management (CRM) software to manage and grow a pipeline of prospects including high value donors, major donors and potential legators 

2.3 Develop and manage a portfolio of high value donors and prospects to include working closely with appropriate colleagues on research, cultivation, ask and stewardship, including planning and delivery of inspiring events

2.4 Work with the CEO, Senior Management Team and Trustees to appropriately involve them in planning and managing relationships with major donors 

2.5 Develop a stewardship programme, developing meaningful relationships with donors and potential donors, involving them in our work and ensure they feel valued and part of the Trust.

2.6 Manage the Patrons Circle, providing a fantastic experience for WWT Patrons, including delivering engaging events and maintaining regular communication

2.7 Ensure appeal donors receive relevant stewardship communications, including holding specific events and activities

3. Legacies

3.1 Support the development of the Trust's legacy strategy, leading to an increase in number of pledges and value pledged

3.2 Identify and recruit new legacy pledgers including but not exclusively from WWT members and supporters, ensuring a legacy pipeline

3.3 Steward known legacy pledgers to maximize and retain their loyalty to WWT and to maximize their lifetime giving, including their support for current appeals.

3.4 Ensure ongoing engagement with all legators and enquirers by upgrading and conversion through the legacy cycle: enquirer, considerer, intender, pledger 

3.5 Create and run a series of events to engage potential and existing legators and legacy professionals

3.6 Liaise with departments across the Trust in relation to legacy campaigns 

3.7 Work closely with the marketing team to ensure effective communication about legacy giving with members, supporters and pledgers/legators 

3.8 Use the CRM’s legacy module to manage relationships with pledgers and legators

4. General Fundraising

4.1 Support the Trust's new Project Oversights Board, ensuring projects align with the strategy, are fully developed, and help secure appropriate funding

4.5 Work closely with the marketing team to update and improve third party fundraising materials, online material and guidance to enable supporters to fundraise for us independently

PURPOSE OF THIS ROLE

Over recent years, SBP has grown from a fledgling charity to an established and impactful organisation with an annual budget of over £1m in restricted and unrestricted funds. 

Our existing Head of Finance, who has been with us through part of this journey, is shortly due to retire and will be replaced by this Head of Finance & HR role, with strategic and operational ownership of SBP’s finances, as well as responsibility of SBP’s HR policy and processes.

KEY LIAISONS

The Head of Finance & HR will report to SBP’s CEO and sit on SBP’s Management Team, comprising the CEO and other heads of functions. 

The role will manage our Finance & HR Officer and work closely with other members of the home-based SBP team, including colleagues in Fundraising leading on income generation.

The role will also communicate regularly with SBP’s Treasurer and the wider Board of Trustees to support their understanding of the charity’s financial and HR management.

Where required, the role will also have contact with SBP’s partners, suppliers and other external contacts in the course of managing the charity’s financial agreements and transactions.

KEY DUTIES/RESPONSIBILITIES

Operational ownership of SBP’s finances, including:

• Control and management of SBP’s bank accounts and financial system (Xero).

• Responsibility for SBP’s financial transactions, payments and payroll.

• Responsibility for external claims/reporting, including Gift Aid claims and VAT returns.

• Responsibility for SBP’s financial processes, controls and policies.

• Line management and development of the Finance & HR Officer to support in the above. 

Strategic ownership and governance of SBP’s finances, including:

• Management and delivery of our annual budget and the budgeting/re-forecasting process, with input from the wider team.

• Management and delivery of our annual accounts and audit, in conjunction with an external accountant/auditor.

• Monthly financial reporting to the Management Team.

• Quarterly financial reporting to the Board of Trustees.

• Financial planning for the organisation, taking into account trends in spending and income, and planned growth of our activities.

• Assessment and communication of financial risks to the Management Team and Board of Trustees.

Financial advice and support to the wider SBP team, including:

• Providing financial information to feed into fundraising applications.

• Providing advice on VAT/financial risk in relation to new products, partnerships and agreements.

• Advising on budget creation and management for projects, commissions and operational areas.

Human resources policy and processes:

• Responsibility for SBP’s human resource processes, controls and policies.

• Oversight of contracting and on-boarding of new employees.

• Oversight of holiday management and storage of key documents/information using our HR system, Breathe. 

• Line management and development of the Finance & HR Officer to support in the above. 

QUALIFICATIONS & EXPERIENCE

• Qualified accountant (ACA/ACCA/CIMA), or equivalent level of knowledge/experience.

• Experience of reporting, budgeting, payroll and other finance processes at an operational and strategic level.

• Experience in a charitable organisation, or good working knowledge of the unique aspects of charity finance, including management of restricted and unrestricted funds.

• Experience of taking ownership of either a finance function or a discreet finance area, along with the responsibility for its accurate management and efficient running.

• Experience of presenting and explaining financial information to individuals and groups with varying levels of financial understanding.

• Experience of HR management policy and process.

• Experience of working with Xero, or proven ability to get up to speed quickly with new financial systems.

KEY SKILLS/ATTRIBUTES

• Self-motivated and solutions-focused, with the capability and desire to take ownership of all relevant responsibilities and continually improve the charity’s financial and HR processes. 

• Comfortable working in a small organisational setting, without the support of a wider, multi-level finance and HR structure/team.

• Attentive to detail, in order to ensure that transactions, processes and reporting are accurate and reliable.

• Analytical, with the skills to provide financial analysis in support of decision-making and help others identify trends and anomalies in our finances.

• Skilled at taking financial data from a variety of sources (e.g. accounting software, bank, spreadsheets) and presenting it to a non-financial audience in an accessible format.

• Excellent organisational, time management and prioritisation skills, with the flexibility to respond to changing needs in a dynamic working environment.

• Ability to communicate confidently with a wide range of people and build positive
  relationships with colleagues, partners and stakeholders.

• Desire and ability to stay up to date with financial and HR governance law and requirements as they relate to charities.

• Motivated to be part of a committed wider team working towards our vision for rewilding in Scotland.

TERMS AND CONDITIONS

Salary: £24,000-27,000 per annum on 0.6 FTE hours (pro-rated from £40,000-45,000 FTE), depending on experience. Salaries are paid in arrears on the last working day of each month by bank transfer.

Hours: Working hours are flexible, but must equate to a minimum of 22.5 working hours (0.6 FTE) per week, Monday to Friday. Note that the full-time working week at SBP is 37.5 hours. The nature of the post may from time to time require evening and weekend work. Paid overtime is not available, but time off in lieu will be given. 

Place of work: This role is home-based within Scotland and will require a suitable home office working environment (SBP can provide a laptop and support additional equipment needs). Attendance of meetings and events in other parts of Scotland will also be required periodically, with travel expenses paid in accordance with SBP’s Expenses Policy. 

Contract: Permanent.

Flexibility: Subject to ensuring that the needs of the charity and the role are met, SBP endeavours to meet the flexible working needs of its employees. 

Holidays: 16.8 days on 0.6 FTE hours (pro-rated from our FTE allowance of 28 days) including public holidays, plus 5 additional office closure days between Christmas and New Year. 

Pensions: You may be eligible to be enrolled into SBP’s employee pension scheme. Written terms of the scheme are available on request. 

Probationary period: 6 months. 

Notice period: 2 months.
