This is an exciting position for an exceptional person with fundraising, campaigning, policy, communications and management/leadership experience to temporarily direct one of the UK’s leading human rights NGOs. In this role, you’ll have the opportunity to oversee high-impact civil liberties campaigns to achieve real change and manage a high-performing multi-disciplinary team to further privacy, free expression and data protection rights in the United Kingdom. Importantly, you’ll be an experienced fundraiser, responsible for leading our grants and major giving to maintain Big Brother Watch’s income growth, and have experience with financial reporting.

You’ll have a diverse skill-set enabling you to line manage our Advocacy Manager, Digital Communications Manager and Head of Research and Investigations. An ideal candidate will also be responsible for leading the development of policy positions on new and emerging issues alongside our talented team.

You may also share spokesperson responsibilities, taking up our role as a recognised voice on civil liberties matters in the national media, though this is not essential.

The start and end of the position will include comprehensive handover periods with the current Director, and may include a period of co-working full time with the current Director.

About you

We’re looking for highly experienced professional with a track record of NGO fundraising and management with a demonstrable passion for protecting civil liberties, especially privacy and freedom of expression. Ideally, you’ll have a high level of experience of or interest in working on new and emerging technologies.

Importantly, you’ll have excellent political judgement. You’ll have strong knowledge of British politics, a strong network of relevant contacts and significant experience both fundraising and advocating for change.

You’ll have an entrepreneurial approach, always identifying opportunities to boost Big Brother Watch’s campaigns, resources and reputation. The ideal candidate will appreciate the importance of winning in the court of public opinion in order to win in parliament, and have the skills to do both.

You’ll be a brilliant communicator internally and externally, able to simplify complex technology issues and convey powerful messages whether in campaign slogans or in interviews as a Big Brother Watch spokesperson.

You’ll be at ease working on a strictly non-partisan, cross-party basis and grounding our campaigns and communications strategies in human rights and liberal principles. You’ll also embody our principles of equality, respect and accountability.

JOB DESCRIPTION

Fundraising

• Seeking fundraising opportunities and writing fundraising applications

• Reporting to funders, including trusts/grants and individual donors

Management and finances

• Day to day operational management of the office, ensuring policies are upheld

• Management of the Advocacy Manager, including overseeing the development of quarterly campaign plans and evaluations across our priority areas

• Management of the Digital Communications Officer and our public communications strategy/scheduling, encompassing digital fundraising

• Management of the Head of Research and Investigations, ensuring ongoing production of high-quality research, investigations and reports to support priority campaign areas

• Ensuring the highest level of quality of all campaigns, communications and research output

• Manage staff performance and development, and ensure wellbeing

• Help foster a positive, supportive work environment

• Financial management of the organisation, liaising with our accountants, with quarterly financial reporting to the Board of Directors, and maintenance of our annual budget

Advocacy

• Lead a high-performing, multi-disciplinary team to further our strategic aims across campaigns, communications, research and some litigation

• Oversee and ultimately authorise our public messaging, from press quotes to public stunts, in line with our strategic aims

• Work with the team to promote Big Brother Watch’s campaigns externally/in the media, supporting spokespeople or personally undertaking speaking engagements, media interviews/opinion writing, etc.

PERSON SPECIFICATION

Essential

• Successful experience (2y+) fundraising from trusts and individual donors for a non-profit/NGO

• Experience of budget management and financial reporting, particularly in a non-profit context

In this role you will work with a small management team, as well as extend your influence into the regional fundraising and engagement team.

Main Duties and Responsibilities:

· Drive engagement, increase visibility, improve our course sales and fundraising targets

· Manage our national and localised digital awareness campaigns from development stage to presenting results and assessment of impact

· Manage and optimise our website and landing pages for improved user experience and conversion rates

· Stay up to date with industry trends, emerging technologies, and best practices in digital marketing

· Help develop social media engagement strategies with our social media officer

About the Role

The Director of Partnerships will lead TASC’s partnership efforts, responsible for cultivating and securing new partnerships, and delivering on partnership strategies.  Your role:

The Grantmaking Operations team sits within the Fund’s Operations department and is primarily focused on ensuring that resources are reaching frontline activist organizations. The team seeks to hire a Grants Specialist who will report to the Managers of Grantmaking Operations and manage the Fund’s most complex grantmaking programs. 

 The successful candidate will join a high-performing, enthusiastic grants management team, a deeply committed global staff, and an organization constantly learning and adapting to global contexts.

 ESSENTIAL DUTIES OF THE POSITION:

 Grantmaking 

• Manage due diligence and enhanced grantmaking protocols for a highly complex and high-volume portfolio of grants spanning 50+ countries. 
  1. Inform the development and implementation of grantmaking plans, ensuring they are robust and responsive to changing contexts and needs.
  2. Research compliance and financial regulation for various country contexts as needed and flag potential areas of risk to the Manager of Grantmaking Policy and Models. 
  3. Identify and flag operational challenges that may have an impact on programmatic grantmaking ambitions, potential donor commitments or grantmaking advisory bodies.
  4. Coordinate with Program and Grantmaking Operations to ensure grants and grantee relationships are managed according to their risk level and operating context.
  5. Together with Program, Fundraising and Finance teams coordinate grant recommendation processes and timeline for grantmaking portfolios.
     • Prepare and organize applicant materials and prospective grantee documents for all LEF cohorts.
     • Manage incoming grant proposals and evaluate eligibility of prospective grantees in line with grantmaking due diligence protocols.
     • Serve as the primary point of contact for grantees, enhancing grantee relations and maintaining communication in multiple languages, including but not limited to English and French.
     • Coordinate translation of grant and program related materials in line with portfolio grantmaking, (i.e., ensuring all grant and program documents are tailored according to program initiatives and compliance needs)
     • Participate (and lead as needed) in regular check-ins, strategic meetings and retreats to help coordinate the workflow of grantmaking, shape grantmaking budgets and collaboration with external stakeholders.
     • Actively contribute to fundraising stages by integrating data-driven insights and compelling narratives in proposals and evaluation reports.

 Database and Systems Administration

• Contribute to the management of the Fund’s grants management system.
  1. Maintain accurate grant and grantee records – updating grant, organization and contact records daily, updating budget trackers periodically and ensuring OFAC compliance.
  2. Generate reports and dashboards for colleagues across departments, as needed.
  3. Code all grantmaking requests and budgeting information.
• Enhance the grants management system functionalities, including coding and back-end development for improved user experience and data integrity.
  1. Collaborate with Grantmaking Operations colleagues to test new releases to grantmaking database, identifying improvements and addressing bugs.
  2. Contribute to the design and creation of the EOI and proposal forms in the grants management system.
  3. Facilitate the successful launch of newly implemented workflows and forms within the grants management system by identifying and assisting in the resolution of issues, ensuring optimal functionality and user experience.
  4. Support the design and implementation of grantee portals to facilitate efficient interactions and reporting.
  5. Collaborate with Grants Management colleagues to test new releases to grantmaking database, identifying improvements and addressing bugs.

 Project Coordination

• Lead on GM internal projects; brainstorming and implementing workflow solutions to team endeavors, ensuring cohesive and aligned project reporting and closing.
• Provide support to the Manager of Grantmaking Systems & Projects 
  1. Support engagement with all project stakeholders, gathering and integrating feedback to improve project management processes.
  2. Proactively identify risks associated with projects; recommending effective solutions to ensure successful implementation.
  3. Inform the scheduling and coordination of project activities, including meetings and deadlines, in coordination with Legal Empowerment Fund team.

Your Team:

This position is part of the Fund’s Grantmaking Operations Team. The team is comprised of one Director, two Managers and four Specialists spread between the US and UK offices. This position will report to the Manager of Systems & Projects and will be based in the UK or US. 

You Have - Candidates should demonstrate the following range of skills, experience, and qualities:

• Three years of relevant work experience, e.g., managing workflows, projects, and processes + at least one year of complementary education or experience working in human rights, program, or fundraising 
• Demonstrated experience navigating legal and financial frameworks in the UK/US and working knowledge of international grantmaking funding trends and nuances.
• Strong project management skills, including software and people and process management.

• Develop and implement an effective stewardship plan creating timely and meaningful engagement with major donors
• Managing a portfolio of Major Donors, developing relationships and commitment to enhanced donations
• Work with the senior leadership team and board to coordinate communication and relationships with donors
• Create compelling propositions for donors, this will also include capital projects

Person Specification:

We are pleased to advertise for a Head of Death Penalty Projects- US to oversee our work against the death penalty in the United States of America. 

Reprieve has worked against the death penalty since our founding. In recent years we have built a particular specialism in issues relating to lethal injection, the most popular execution method in the US. Lethal injection has been touted as more humane than other methods – a modern, clean, clinical way to execute. This couldn’t be further from the truth. Lethal injection executions go wrong more often than any other execution method, often resulting in prolonged and torturous executions, commonly known as “botched” executions. Through our work we aim to dispel the myth of the humane execution, working with allies across medicine, business and other sectors to end the misuse of medicines and medical technology in executions.

The existing portfolio of work includes litigation, investigation and analysis, corporate engagement, a wide range of public and private advocacy, and developing and maintaining world-leading expertise on execution methods, particularly the jurisprudence and science relevant to lethal injection.

Contract, location and salary

The role is a full-time, permanent position with a salary of £59,226 per annum less any required deductions for tax and national insurance.Reprieve operates a hybrid working model and we require staff to work a minimum of 40% from the London office and the rest of the week from home. Main Purpose of the Role

The Head of Volunteering will act as an ambassador for volunteering across all StreetVet locations and externally. • Develop and implement the StreetVet Volunteering Strategy
