Independent Age is the national charity focused on improving the lives of people facing financial hardship in later life. 

Our Helpline and expert advisers offer free, practical support to older people without enough money to live on. Through our grants programme, we support hundreds of local organisations working with older people across the UK.

We use the knowledge and insight gained from our support services and partnerships to highlight the issues experienced by older people in poverty and campaign for change.

Responsibilities and Person Specification:

Working closely with the CEO, the Director of Policy and Influencing and the Head of Influencing, the Head of Policy and Research will lead an ambitious programme of research and policy development - with the experience of older people in poverty at the core - to secure change on reserved policy issues across the UK. The Head of Policy and Research will work proactively, collaboratively and strategically with internal and external stakeholders to secure support for our policy and practice recommendations and make them a reality. They will provide effective, inspirational, transparent and compassionate leadership and line management to colleagues in the Policy and Research department. This is one of two new roles in our well established Policy and Influencing Directorate, building on our commitment to drive forward policy change that tackles poverty in later life. 

You should have a passion to tackle poverty in later life, significant experience leading and evaluating large and complex programmes of strategic policy work and devising creative and workable policy solutions that are adopted by UK Government, businesses and/or regulators. It’s also essential to be an experienced line manager and team player, collaborating with internal and external stakeholders across the nations to secure policy change.

This is a full-time role, 35 hours per week, which you can choose to work over five days or a 9 day fortnight.

What we need from you

We are looking for an experienced leader and manager who is skilled in building and developing effective relationships with colleagues, particularly with a workforce which is geographically dispersed. Looking for a chance to make a real impact, you will have the desire and passion to drive forward the mission and values of The Advocacy People.

Although this role is predominantly working from home the role does require monthly travel to see our local teams which are currently accross the south of England. You must have access to a stable home broadband service, good mobile signal, a full driving licence and your own transport as well as flexibility with working hours.

The post holder will be fully involved in all aspects of the day-to-day management of our Young Peoples Ofsted registered service, including line managing the relevant front-line staff. About Us:

Appeer is a Community Interest Company (CIC) set up to deliver services that support autistic girls and women (and those assigned female at birth) to connect with peers, to develop their life/work skills and to support their wellbeing.  We provide in person and online activity groups and programmes, alternative provision, events and resources for those in the community that we serve, their parents/carers and other professionals. We are not a therapeutic setting and as such do not offer clinical support or 1:1 supervision. When a family member has a spinal cord injury, it can be difficult to acknowledge and accept that their injury will affect you too.

You might find it difficult to express and share how you have been affected by these events, especially to your loved one with the injury. Overwhelming feelings of guilt, helplessness, confusion and isolation are very common.
