Job title: Chief Operating Officer (COO)

Hours: 37.5 per week. Flexibility will be considered working a minimum of 30 hours per week / 0.9 full time equivalent. Salary and pay will be adjusted accordingly.

Work pattern: 5 days per week. The majority of hours will be worked during office hours Monday to Friday, however Winchester Science Centre offers a 7 day a week experience with events on several evenings per week. To best support the team there will be occasional work, meetings and events in evenings, early mornings and at weekends which will be compensated by time off in lieu.

Salary: £60,000-£70,000 per annum depending on experience (pro rata if working fewer than 37.5 hours per week)

Responsible for: Head of Visitor Experiences, Head of Events, Head of Marketing and Head of Curiosity

Holiday: 27 days per annum plus bank holidays based on working 37.5 hours per week. Option to buy/sell some leave and gain additional days for continuous service after four years.

Location: Winchester and Eastleigh. Occasional travel within the UK will be required.

This is a key period of growth for our Charity, with the delivery of our new strategy and exciting capital and activity Masterplan in the pipeline. This will be the single largest development in our 38 year history, whereby we are investing over £6m in further expanding our base of operations in driving further financial resilience and reducing risks to the charity. The growth will enable our Charity to maximise its social impact: empowering thousands of children to develop the science skills and nature agency to act on the climate and biodiversity crises.

This newly-created role will play a vital part in enabling and shaping the very exciting future of Wonderseekers.

The post-holder will lead all of our of Charity operations at Winchester Science Centre including;

• Visitor experiences (including customer services, exhibition, retail and catering)
• Events (for families and adult audiences)
• Curiosity (education, planetarium, and live science engagement)
• Marketing

Working alongside the Chief Financial Officer, the post-holder will deputise for our CEO from time to time representing the charity to external stakeholders and partners.

The Chief Operations Officer (COO) will be a commercially astute and visitor focused operational leader who possesses an entrepreneurial spirit. Through their inspirational, values-based, and collaborative approach, they will always look for new opportunities to innovate and drive growth.

The post holder will bring their wealth of experience as an operational leader with a proven track record within a large visitor attraction to provide expert knowledge to lead a large and diverse team to success.

The COO will be an integral part of the SLT to support business planning by translating the vision, goals, and strategy for the Charity into operational and business plans. They will demonstrate strong financial leadership helping to provide best value and deliver on agreed targets.

Key accountabilities

• Delivery of Commercial Objectives – Drive the commercial performance of our visitor centre, growing revenue whilst managing costs.
• Strategic development - As a member of the leadership team, the COO will play a key role in supporting the CEO with the strategic development of the Charity, bringing a commercial and operational mindset. The COO will attend Board meetings and other Trustee committees.

Main responsibilities

• Drive continuous improvement initiatives within the commercial operations team to enhance business performance and standards whilst driving efficiency
• Deliver effective, empowering and engaging operational leadership across a large and diverse team of over 80 people
• Lead on the commercial operational strategy and translate strategy into actionable steps for growth and increased impact
• With the CFO manage all aspects of commercial operational risk including reporting and monitoring
• Manage and deliver transformational change through a period of significant growth
• Closely manage income and expenditure targets for a turnover of over £3.5m ensuring best value is delivered for the Charity.
• Represent the Charity at various offsite meetings including public speaking
• Collaborate with the senior leadership team to set and drive organisational vision and support the strategic direction of the Charity
• Ensure that the commercial operations teams activities are aligned to the Charity’s sustainability strategy and plans

• Championing existing partnerships internally to ensure the partnership’s expectations are delivered and exceeded. This includes working to secure engagement from Senior Leadership and relevant colleagues across Communications and Engagement.

• Coordinate with internal groups and senior colleagues across the Impact and Network Delivery teams to write applications and reports.

• Conduct and support colleagues on the Trusts & Foundations team with prospect research, helping to build a strong pipeline of new, well-researched opportunities that have strong alignment with UK Youth’s funding priorities.

• Support the Trusts & Foundations team in making approaches to a list of high value Trust & Foundation prospects, delivering high quality bids to secure new partnerships.

• Support the Partnerships & Trusts Team with ad hoc administrative duties including pipeline reporting, database (CRM) management, and inbox management.

About the role

As the MSK SKILLs Development Officer you will Support the Health Development team in developing and delivering a flexible, responsive and evidence-based education programme for health and care professionals. Through effective marketing and relationship building, promote the Advanced MSK SKILLs programme for health and care professionals and support the development of a health and care professional customer journey.

About you

If your knowledge, skills and experience include the following then we’d love to hear from you:

• Experience of developing and delivering communication plans to promote and effectively market a range of education and training products, with the ability to demonstrate impact.

You will work with the County Council’s Refuse Collection Teams and Waste Managers to deliver a programme of targeted doorstep engagement, monitoring and community engagement activity aimed at reducing contamination and increasing recycling. As a Recycling Engagement Officer you will exercise your delegated powers to address residential waste offences.

You will be a strong and persuasive communicator, able to understand legislation and council policies and to explain these in simple terms to residents through correspondence and conversation. • Our research is child-centred, meaningful and useful - it drives improvements to our work with children, families and communities, influences the development of policy and guidance, and contributes to new NSPCC campaigns, as well as adding to the wider evidence base. 
• We also support research activity at NSPCC via our Research Advice Clinic, Evidence Summary Service, and the NSPCC Research Ethics Committee.

 What will the job involve? 

This is an exciting and varied role for a researcher with excellent project management skills. You'll be working with colleagues in departments across the NSPCC including Childline, Policy and Public Affairs, Knowledge and Information, Schools services and Participation. Current projects we're working on include research on technology assisted online sexual extortion, sex and relationships education at secondary and primary levels, problematic sexual behaviour and provision of services to tackle loneliness, to name just a few.

Specifically, the role will involve: 

• Designing and project managing research on a wide range of NSPCC research projects. 

• Liaising with internal and external stakeholders to develop research projects and advising other teams in the NSPCC about how to carry out robust and ethical research. 

• Communicating research findings to a range of different audiences including colleagues, practitioners, decision makers, policy makers, academics and the children and families who access our services. 
• Managing junior members of the team directly and via our matrix management structure.

What experience are we looking for?

You will have demonstrable experience of undertaking and managing complex research and evaluation projects in different settings and contexts. You will have a passion for the NSPCC's mission, and for child-centred, participatory research, as well as a strong understanding of: 

• Qualitative and quantitative research methods, including participatory fieldwork methods 
• What makes research, particularly research with children, safe and ethical.

You would be joining us at a time when in the middle of last year, we launched our new identity as the Leadership Skills Foundation (previously Sports Leaders UK) alongside a new 5-year ‘Evolve’ strategy. Having navigated the challenges of the pandemic, the organisation has naturally placed an emphasis in recent years on retaining and sustaining the existing relationships we have with the 2,500 organisations (centres) that deliver our programmes.

Looking ahead, with new programmes and partnerships emerging, this role will now play a significant part in helping us expand the network of centres delivering Leadership Skills Foundation programmes and broaden the audiences we reach. Over the next few years, we aim to create an adaptable leadership skill offer that will increase our reach to more young people across, fully establishing the Leadership Skills Foundation as the trusted voice for leadership skills development.

We have ambitions to empower a more diverse range of young people with opportunities to develop essential leadership and life skills, regardless of their background. Having recently secured a strategic partnership with Sport England, this role will play a significant role in activating that programme, leading the co-ordination, engagement and management of local and regional stakeholders to deliver leadership programmes with identified target audiences, groups and individuals. 

The role will initially be a fixed term contract (to July 2027) but we aim to secure further funding for the role to extend.

You will act as an influential member of the organisation’s newly established Programme Delivery Team delivering the Programmes and Projects Strategy aimed at supporting growth, reach, and impact of Leadership Skills Foundation programmes among underserved and/or under-represented communities and individuals, which will in turn, benefit thousands of young people across the UK.
