Refugee Legal Support works in solidarity with people who migrate. We operate in the UK, France and Greece, promoting and protecting rights through legal support, casework, litigation, engagement, training and partnerships. We advocate for safe migration and oppose discriminatory immigration systems and policies.

RLS has held a legal aid contract in the UK since 2023. 

About the Afghan Pro Bono Initiative (APBI)

The Afghan Pro Bono Initiative is a specialist casework project delivered by RLS with funding and pro bono assistance from 14 leading commercial law firms. It is a project delivered in partnership with SPI. 

Firm pro bono lawyers are trained and supervised by the project’s two full-time supervising lawyers so that they can then assist with legal casework.

APBI has two core components. The team delivers legal information and support to and within the Afghan community, working together with the Community Engagement and Research Lead to ensure wide access. While the project also provides high quality legal representation in a range of cases for this community. This includes family reunion, the ARAP scheme, the Afghan Citizens Resettlement Scheme and others. 

APBI then aims to respond to the increased need for legal information, advice and representation of Afghan nationals and their family members forced to seek protection and reunion with family in the United Kingdom following the Taliban takeover. The project is now going into its 3rd year, and won the Most Effective Pro Bono Partnership Award at the Law Works Pro Bono Awards in 2022 as well as being nominated and commended for numerous other awards in 2022 and 2023. 

The casework of this project feeds into strategic research, policy and advocacy efforts to make existing ‘safe’ routes to protection (in particular refugee family reunion and resettlement schemes) more accessible and effective, advocate for their expansion and defend the fundamental rights of people on the move by influencing policy and decision making. 

Litigation arising out of the project is actively pursued (where eligible) under RLS’s legal aid contract to push for better decision-making, secure results for individuals and pursue improvements in the relevant law, policy and practices. 

RLS recognise that pro bono legal work is always an adjunct to, and not a substitute for, an adequate system of publicly funded legal services. 

Key responsibilities and objectives

The post holder will be a staff member of Refugee Legal Support. They will be a participant within the Afghan Pro Bono Initiative project team, which comprises two lawyers (the other being at SPI), a coordinator and a Community Engagement and Research Lead in addition to the volunteer lawyers from the individual commercial firm partners. 
 

Key responsibilities

• Manage a small caseload and provide high quality legal advice and representation to clients;

• Supervise the work of volunteer pro bono commercial lawyers on cases;

• Deliver training to pro bono commercial lawyers;

• Ensure that all legal work is promptly and accurate recorded on RLS’s case management system and keep relevant time recording; 

• Develop and disseminate relevant information on legal developments in this area for relevant stakeholders, including both the Afghan Community and building the capacity of other practitioners;

• Work in close collaboration with the other project Lawyer/s to develop and share experiences and best practice in relation to all aspects of casework (legal, evidential and procedural) and relevant internal processes;

• Work in close collaboration with the Legal Director, Programmes Manager and Coordinator to ensure that appropriate steps to achieve the aims and objectives of the project are taken, including ensuring that relevant data is obtained and assisting with the timely completion of the project Operational Plan/s;

• Work in close collaboration with the APBI Coordinator and Programmes Manager to contribute to the production of materials such as project periodic reports, information on emerging and strategic issues in relation to ‘safe’ routes for use in advocacy, content for newsletters, social media posts and articles to raise awareness of the project and its aims and outputs;

• Participate in, and contribute to, RLS’s monitoring, evaluation and learning framework;

• Be an active member of the RLS team participating in team meetings at both the UK and International level: engaging in a collegiate and collaborative environment that includes participating in the development of a new and exciting legal organisation; 

• Be an active and collaborative member of the APBI Project team together with the other Lawyer/s, Coordinator and Community Engagement and Research Lead;

• Work in close collaboration with the Community Engagement and Research Lead to contribute to the production of information sheets and other materials to disseminate to the Afghan community/ies;

• Maintain accurate and confidential records in line with GDPR;

• Adhere to RLS safeguarding policies and procedures at all times. 

Person Specification

Essential

• Be either a member of the Bar, a solicitor and accredited to IAAS Senior caseworker level, accredited to IAAS Senior caseworker level, or OISC accredited to Level 3;

• Experience of asylum casework;

• Experience of refugee family reunion procedures and applications, including applications outside of the Immigration Rules reliant on Article 8 ECHR and other human rights provisions;

• Experience of online immigration applications; 

• Demonstrable knowledge of legal aid provision and ECF applications; 

• Demonstrable supervision experience; 

• Experience of and commitment to working in a collaborative way on legal cases;

• Good verbal and written communication skills in English;

• Strong organisational skills, including the ability to prioritise work and meet deadlines;

• Strong attention to detail, responsiveness, reliability and dependability;

• Strong interpersonal and relationship management skills and an ability to deal professionally and collaboratively with both legal and not-for-profit stakeholders;

• Computer literacy;

• Right to reside and work in the UK;

• Enjoy working with a small team in a flexible and fast-paced environment, as well as being an independent self-starter able to work with a high degree of autonomy;

• Have a strong commitment to upholding the human rights of asylum seekers, migrants, and refugees; 

• Commitment to the aims of the project and the values of RLS.

• The successful candidate will be required to obtain an enhanced DBS certificate (we cover the cost). However, a criminal record is not a barrier to the role. 

Desirable

• Those with lived experience of navigating immigration systems are strongly encouraged to apply and will be favourable considered;

About the role

We have a new and exciting opportunity to work with us as an Equity, Diversity and Inclusion (EDI) Manager (External) to provide continuity while our EDI Strategy Lead is on maternity leave. Reporting to the Executive Director, Impact and working with key stakeholders and colleagues across the whole organisation, you will help ensure alignment between our external For Everyone Strategic Framework and our new organisational strategy. As a charity for everyone, this framework outlines our approach to embedding equity, diversity and inclusion internally within our organisation and externally in our delivery work.

As the EDI Manager (External) you will be supporting the Senior Leadership Team to deliver core actions from the For Everyone External Action Plan. You will also be responsible for reporting and evaluating progress on the implementation of the For Everyone External Action Plan.

You will be overseeing the consistent implementation of Sustrans Approaches, a new document that sets out the services that Sustrans offers, with a particular focus on inclusive design and delivery. Ensuring quality and timely execution, you will be managing specific EDI work projects and change initiatives, as outlined in the External Action Plan and/or Sustrans Approaches. Location: This role is contractually based in Central London; however, we currently operate a hybrid working model with regular whole team face to face meetings once a month. Engagement Lead Health Inequity

This is an exciting opportunity to work with those affected by stroke and those working in stroke, to focus on the health inequity that stroke survivors experience. We are looking for an innovative, passionate and professional individual with excellent interpersonal and organisational skills to join our leadership team in the South West – specifically Bath & North East Somerset.

The Role

The project has recently been through the research and design phase and is now ready to implement a number of tests to address health inequities experienced by Stroke survivors following their stroke. The project exploration and design has taken a collaborative approach with our NHS colleagues, the Engagement Lead will continue with this approach.

Reporting to the Associate Director for the South West & Channel Islands, the Engagement Lead will:

· Lead and oversee the project tests, measuring the impact with an ability to adapt and flex as the project develops.

· Have responsibility for developing the project with a test and learn approach.

Look Good Feel Better is a national cancer charity devoted to delivering workshops that help people living with a cancer diagnosis to cope with the physical and emotional side effects of their treatment. About Lepra

Lepra is dedicated to addressing leprosy and lymphatic filariasis (LF) and their consequences through direct support, advocacy, and the promotion of inclusive communities. We work in Bangladesh and in India, through our sister organisation, LEPRA Society. We work in partnership with people affected by leprosy and LF to improve detection, ensure access to treatment and care, and promote inclusion and wellbeing. We have just finalised our new Global Strategy for 2024-30, which will guide us in our efforts to accelerate progress towards global targets for leprosy and LF, and towards our vision of a world free from leprosy and LF.

Background & Context to the Consultancy

Our new Global Strategy introduces some new approaches and priorities to our work, including: our first ever global Theory of Change (ToC), the most detailed Monitoring, Evaluation, Accountability and Learning (MEAL) approach ever, and a sub-strategy dedicated to our Advocacy work. Purpose & Objectives of the Consultancy

The primary objective of this consultancy is to enhance the effectiveness and efficiency of Lepra’s programmes through robust MEAL practices, capacity development, and comprehensive support across various operational areas including advocacy, knowledge management, safeguarding, project cycle management, and cross-team collaboration.

Scope of Work

The consultant will be responsible for the following key areas over a six-month period:

MEAL

• Strengthening the capacity of the teams across the organisation to effectively deliver on the ToC and the MEAL strategy.

• Develop / roll out tools and methodologies for data collection, analysis, and reporting.
• Support the development of new proposals with a MEAL and project management cycle approach.

GGF UK consists of thirteen staff members working on fundraising and influencing philanthropy; finance; communications; and operations, with all of these functions operating autonomously but in close collaboration with their US counterpart functions.

The Philanthropic Partnerships Lead – Major Donor to understand the challenges and opportunities that come with these transformations and can remain flexible, steady, and adaptable.

The role

Global Greengrants Fund UK is looking to hire an energetic and passionate individual who will play a key role in establishing and developing Global Greengrants Fund UK’s offering to individual donors to be able to make gifts of £100,000 annually, in order to secure significant unrestricted income for the organisation.

GGF UK has a small portfolio of existing high net worth individual (HNWI) supporters but is currently primarily reliant on income from trusts and foundations. The post holder will join the organisation at a time of very significant growth and will be expected to be able to work autonomously to build out a new income stream with significant potential to diversify our revenue and strengthen the organisation’s support to grassroots environmental justice movements.

Working as part of the Philanthropic Partnerships team and reporting to the Director of Philanthropic Partnerships, the postholder will also collaborate closely with colleagues across the global organisation Global Greengrants Fund, particularly within the Programmes, Communications, and Development teams towards realising organisational aims.

The candidate profile

The successful applicant will have significant relevant experience in a similar role in a charitable, environmental, development, and/or grant-making organisation. They will be an experienced, senior-level fundraiser with a track record of securing and developing successful relationships with HNWIs to achieve ambitious income goals. They will have extensive experience in developing pitches, proposals, and fundraising products; and a strong interest in environmental justice, international development or human rights issues. They will have an extensive knowledge of the funding and philanthropy sectors in the UK and Europe; excellent written and verbal communication skills; and be confident in engaging a wide range of internal and external stakeholders, including at senior levels. They should also have excellent interpersonal understanding, relationship-building, stewardship, and conceptual skills to build strong alliances with diverse constituencies and manage complex politics, positioning, and relationships. They also thrive in a virtual environment and are motivated to take on challenges and collaboratively find innovative and creative solutions.

Role Purpose

The role holder will be part of the Operations & Transformation Directorate reporting to the Head of PMO / Change and Delivery Lead.

The incumbent will have a pivotal role in the management of change, implementation and continuous improvement projects, mostly in the digital and IDS sphere. The role holder will help to ensure the work is aligned with the strategic objectives of the organisation, promoting the team’s relevance and value. Working on a broad spectrum of digitally focussed projects, this role will partner with the senior management team and other internal stakeholders.

Key Activities

• Project Management of Mobilisation and Implementation projects covering systems, continuous improvement, and strategic projects
• Creating project plans & mapping dependencies from bottom-up in collaboration with key stakeholders
• Define and track project milestones and ensure dependencies are understood and accepted by the relevant owners
• Report on the status of projects and ensure the appropriate governance and compliance is applied
• Coordinate and facilitate the delivery of a complex range of initiatives and/or projects
• Act as Project Manager by planning, supporting, facilitating and monitoring progress of activities, ensuring that delivery is on track, as well as establishing mitigating activities where risks and issues may arise.
• Oversee a number of complex projects
• This role requires a proactive approach to relationship building - collaborating, negotiating and managing internal and external stakeholders, ensuring delivery is achieved by the most effective and efficient means.
• Ensuring the project stays on time and within budget to deliver outcomes and measure expectations
• Working with the Risk Manager on risk and issues management

Experience & Qualifications

Essential:

• Significant and demonstrable project management experience (3-5 years) in a multi-project environment, from inception to implementation and closure
• Extensive experience delivering complex projects with strategic change component
• Experience managing projects through multi-disciplinary teams
• Project/Programme qualification e.g. APM, PRINCE2, MSP; experience working with both Waterfall and Agile methodologies
• Excellent communication and negotiation skills (verbal, written and listening)
• Strong attention to detail
• Self-starter with the ability to work autonomously and proactively
• Resilient and able to handle ambiguity
• Personal, relatable character, able to build relationships with a diverse set of stakeholders
• Ability to maintain confidentiality and manage data and information with discretion

Desirable:

• Have had exposure with matrix working and strong capability as a business partner in relationship building with stakeholders
• Demonstrable experience dealing with Director-level stakeholders and challenge thinking where appropriate
• Government / public sector experience would be advantageous
• Knowledge of project management best practices, methodologies, and project governance principles
• Adaptability – accepts need for change, maintains a positive outlook and projects credibility
• Experience of using Google Sheets and Smartsheet to be able to create project plans
