The Role:
The Hardman Trust is at an exciting point in its development as it celebrates the arrival of its new team, the realisation of its first ever strategy and looks forward to the next phase of its journey.
Our recently successful applications to both the Lottery (Reaching Communities) and the City Bridge Trust means we will continue to be part-funded by them until 2027. Deeply rooted in the criminal justice sector, we plan to develop further our programme of support for those on long sentences both within and, we hope, beyond prison too; we aim to extend the reach and deepen the impact of our support and grants; and attract new partnerships with funders and like-minded third sector organisations. We have recently completed a merger with another charity and are open to further such mergers in the future.

The Guy’s & St Thomas’ Foundation which supports the work of Guy’s and St Thomas’ NHS Foundation Trust, is seeking an experienced brand, marketing and communications professional to become their Director of Marketing and Engagement in a newly created role.
The Guy’s & St Thomas’ Foundation is an independent foundation that has been investing in a healthier society for more than 500 years. This position brings together previous director roles at the Foundation into a new strategic role responsible for developing and implementing marketing and engagement strategies for the Foundation’s three hospital charities - Guy’s & St Thomas’ Charity, Guy’s Cancer Charity and Evelina London Children’s Charity - to enable them to continue their vital work.

The Director will set out the role of brand, digital, and communications as strategic enablers for the Foundation’s fundraising ambition and charitable impact and will play a critical role working with the NHS Foundation Trust to put patients, families and staff, at the heart of increasing income to fund long-term support.
The successful candidate will have substantial brand, marketing and communications experience at a senior level, ideally in the charity sector, and experience of devising, planning and implementing integrated communications strategies. They will also have a strong background in overseeing communications that support fundraising and drive income growth alongside a deep understanding of digital channels, audience and digital innovation.
The new director will have experience of leading and fostering high performing teams with exceptional leadership skills that enable them to inspire and enthuse people, and to build collaborative and effective relationships internally and external to the Foundation. Excellent judgement and decision-making abilities will be combined with outstanding communication and interpersonal skills.

Post summary
This is an exciting position for an exceptional person with a strong campaigning background to work for one of the UK’s leading rights NGOs. In this role, you’ll have the opportunity to devise high-impact campaigns to achieve real change, co-ordinating a multi-disciplinary high-performing team to further privacy, free expression and data protection rights. Ideally, you’ll also be a key Big Brother Watch spokesperson in the media.
You’ll have both people and project management responsibilities, leading our campaigns on key policy issues such as facial recognition, free speech online, financial privacy, digital ID and algorithmic decision making in the welfare system.
You’ll plan, execute and evaluate campaigns across all areas of our organisational strategy: surveillance and power; free expression online; and identity and financial privacy - as well as explore new organisational priorities, over time.
About you
We’re looking for highly skilled professional with a track record of delivering impactful change and, importantly, a demonstrable passion for protecting civil liberties – especially privacy and freedom of expression. Ideally, you’ll have a high level of experience of or interest in working on new and emerging technologies.
You’ll have significant experience working in a campaigns capacity, and significant experience managing people and projects in a comparable environment that relied on your expertise on civil liberties, surveillance or technology issues. You’ll be familiar with key issues in the area.
You’ll also have excellent knowledge of British politics and UK parliamentary procedures, a strong network of contacts in Westminster and significant experience campaigning for change in parliament in order to maximise our political impact.
You’ll be a brilliant communicator, able to simplify complex technology issues and convey powerful messages whether in campaign slogans or in live news interviews as a Big Brother Watch spokesperson. You’ll have an entrepreneurial approach to your work, always identifying opportunities to boost the progress of your campaigns. As the Senior MEL Officer in the MEL team, you will support the Head of Impact & Learning and the MEL Manager, as well as the Programmes & Impact department and wider team, to measure and analyse the quality and impact of our programming. You’ll use your strong organisation skills, experience in data collection and analysis, and ability to identify key trends and impact in our work. You will also work with colleagues across the organisation to ensure that our impact and expertise in working with women entrepreneurs is measured and communicated accurately and effectively to our Board of Trustees and external stakeholders.
Department purpose
This role sits within the Programmes & Impact department, which is responsible for the development and delivery of our programmes and services, ensuring they are delivered to a high quality, remain responsive to women entrepreneurs’ needs and have demonstrable impact. The department is divided into three teams: Entrepreneurship, which is responsible for delivery of services such as HerVenture and the four ‘Road to’ programmes, Mentoring, which is responsible for development and delivery of the Mentoring Women in Business programme, and MEL, which is responsible for quality impact measurement, analysis and research.
Key responsibilities
Main obligations
- Support the development and implementation of MEL systems and tools across Mentoring and Entrepreneurship projects, providing the Foundation with the necessary information to understand our impact and inform programme improvements.
- Support in collection and analysis of organisational KPIs and provide overall operational support for the MEL team.
Specific responsibilities
- Programme Monitoring, Evaluation and Learning
- Ensure up-to-date programme monitoring and evaluation materials (surveys, data collection tools and theoretical frameworks) are in place for existing programmes as well as those that are in development.
- In collaboration with colleagues in the Mentoring and Entrepreneurship teams, execute the annual calendar of programme and partner surveys, including uploading and testing the surveys.
- Develop analysis plans aligned to key research questions, programme goals and logical frameworks.
- Collect, clean and analyse quantitative and qualitative programme data aligned to programme goals, logical frameworks, organisational KPIs, and general summaries of findings.
- Collaborate with colleagues on the Mentoring and Entrepreneurship teams to support dissemination of programme findings and cross-site trends internally and externally.
Research and Evaluation
- Provide administrative, logistical and analytical support for programme evaluation and in-country data collection.
- Conduct desk research to support programme implementation and/or provide background and context for research and evaluation findings.
- Collect, clean and analyse data for Foundation-led or commissioned research and evaluations.
- Support development of tools and protocols for qualitative data collection, and conduct remote and in-country fieldwork, as needed.
- Project management and administration
- Attend and document monthly MEL meetings with colleagues in the Entrepreneurship and Mentoring teams.
- Support drafting internal and external reports to donors and in-country partners sharing programme outcomes and recommendations.
- Provide administrative support to the MEL team to organise and archive programme data, and anonymise PII in accordance with GDPR, under the direction of the MEL Manager.
- Maintain MEL data storage systems, including an organised library of accessible data collection tools and a database of vetted survey questions.

Person specification

- Essential criteria
- Two or more years of experience working in MEL, ideally related to international development.
- Experience with MEL tools and approaches for qualitative and quantitative data collection and analysis, including survey design and implementation, semi-structured interviews, focus groups and outcome harvesting.
- Good skills in MS Excel, PowerPoint and SurveyMonkey (or other survey tools such as Kobo Toolbox or Google Forms).
- Data collection, storage, analysis, and visualisation skills.
- Comfortable working in a fast-paced environment and able to juggle competing priorities while maintaining a meticulous attention to detail.
- Ability to develop a clear narrative from data, pitched at an appropriate level for the target audience, and to develop evidence-based recommendations.

- Familiarity with Microsoft Teams (or other project management/collaborative software) and Google open source suite of programmes, including Forms.
- Experience living and/or working in a low or middle income country.
- Understanding of key issues in women’s economic empowerment, entrepreneurship, and of gender and development.
- Willingness and ability to travel internationally.
