Role Overview

As a Trustee and Spiritual Specialist, you will play a vital role in ensuring our charity fulfils its purpose for the public benefit.

Your strategic input will be crucial in guiding the organisation’s direction, setting policies, defining goals, and evaluating performance.

Additionally, you will assist in appointing and monitoring the Chief Executive’s performance.
Key Responsibilities
You will be instrumental in challenging and evolving our vision for spiritual care, promoting the understanding that death is part of life, and supporting community engagement. Collaborating closely with the Spiritual Support Lead and multi-faith leaders, you will enhance spiritual care for our patients and families of all faiths and none. You will champion the implementation and development of our spiritual strategy, utilising multi-faith contacts to support our mission.
The Ideal Candidate

Time Commitment
The role requires in-person attendance at quarterly board meetings (3 hours) at Winsley House and participation in Strategy Away Days held off-site twice annually. You will also attend relevant board sub-committee meetings quarterly, which may be held virtually, and participate in ad-hoc meetings and wider engagement activities as needed.
Appointment Details
The term is for 3 years, renewable up to a maximum of 9 years (3 x 3-year terms). Closing date is 18 September 2024 with interviews to be held 30 September or 1 October 2024

Introduction

Full training is given, and it’s great fun, with students often covering thought-provoking topics from obesity and the NHS to Churchill and what defines happiness.

Overview of the Branch Trustee opportunity
We are looking for an enthusiastic and passionate person, with a legal background, who could devote their time to volunteer as a trustee at our Preston & District Branch and support us with GDPR compliance.
Alongside passing on your expertise, this opportunity will give you the chance to influence how we care for and prevent cruelty to animals and drive the implementation of key initiatives. You will serve on the governing body of the charity and be instrumental, alongside fellow trustees, in the running of the Branch and setting out both the short and long term aims. As a minimum, trustees would normally be expected to attend a bi-monthly committee meeting lasting around 2 to 3 hours (virtual meetings are an option). However, the commitment may vary depending on your availability, and if you decide to take on additional duties.Trustee do not need to live within the branch boundaries but occasional travel to Branch sites may be required from time to time.

The RSPCA Preston & District Branch
Over 80% of the animal welfare work of RSPCA is carried out through local branches, which are run by staff & volunteers who have the support of the National Society of RSPCA.
The Preston & District Branch is part of a network of 140 branches, and one of only 8 in the North of England with an animal centre. We are a separately registered charity looking after animals in our local area and engaging with the local community. Our mission is to provide safe homes to abandoned, neglected or abused animals, to nurse them back to health, rehabilitate them and find them their forever home.
RSPCA Preston is a well established branch with approximately 20 members of staff and 75 volunteers across 4 locations. The main activity of our branch is providing a rescue, rehabilitation and rehoming centre within the Preston area (close to JCN 31 of the M6). To continue helping animals in need we also operate 3 charity shops in Longridge, Chorley and Penwortham which bring in a regular income to keep our animal centre open.

Primary responsibilities of the Branch Trustee – Legal and GDPR
- Assist the Branch in ensuring that activities are GDPR compliant and reviewing and updating the Branch processing activities register.
- Support the Branch in developing and updating Branch policies, particularly the Branch privacy notice and internal data protection policy, to make sure they are compliant.
- Support the Branch when liaising with external specialist providers such as HR and health and safety specialists.
- The Branch may occasionally enter into new leases with regards to its charity shops; so, liaising with external specialists for advice if it does not fall under your area of expertise.
- To assist the Branch when developing new schemes, such as providing welfare assistance to those on low incomes, to ensure any new schemes are GDPR compliant.
Core Branch Trustee responsibilities
- Appreciate and support the aims and policies of the RSPCA.
- Work in conjunction with fellow trustees and branch officers and jointly act in making decisions for the best interest of the branch and the RSPCA.
- Work with national RSPCA staff to ensure that the branch meets all minimum animal welfare standards (MAWS).
- In conjunction with your fellow trustees and Branch Partnership Manager write, adopt, monitor, and review a development plan setting out the short and long term aims of your branch.
- Actively participate in branch committee meetings and to attend the branch annual general meeting and regional conference.
- Be aware of the outcome of regional board meetings and support regional initiatives.
- Actively promote and advertise the society in an ongoing programme to recruit new branch trustees and volunteers and welcome new members.
- In conjunction with your fellow trustees, ensure the proper management and control of all activities and decisions relating to any premises held or staff employed by the branch if applicable.

You will need to be able to work with people and have good interpersonal skills. You do not need to be an expert although commitment, common sense, and the ability to be objective are vital.

- We will provide you with a comprehensive trustee training course which will provide you with everything you need to carry out the role.
- Ongoing support is also provided by local and national RSPCA staff in addition to any additional training provided by the relevant branch.

Practical considerations
- Please also note that to become a Trustee, you will need to be aged 18 or over and a member of our branch for three months before you are eligible to be elected at our AGM.
- Trustees are elected for a 12-month term each year.
- Reasonable expenses will be reimbursed.
- Trustees must sign a Trustee Declaration of Willingness to Act to clarify that they are not disqualified from being a trustee and read the Charity Commission’s guidance for individuals who cannot be a trustee or senior manager of a charity.

Role Description – Treasurer to the Board of Trustees
The Board of Trustees recognise that charity governance is a balanced relationship between the employed staff; the Chief Executive, Executive Leadership team, and the Board of Trustees. Together they are responsible for directing the affairs of the charity, ensuring that it is solvent, well-run, and delivering the intended charitable benefits.
A key role in the effective governance of the financial affairs is that of the Treasurer among the charity Trustees. While financial matters are the responsibility of all Trustees, the Treasurer takes special responsibility for all aspects of the charity’s financial management and reporting.
An overview of the role of Treasurer is:

monitor the financial administration of the charity and report to the Board of Trustees, in compliance with the governing document.

oversee the charity’s financial risk-management process;

act as a counter signatory per the bank mandate; and
-
provide board-level liaison with the external auditors on specific issues such as the Auditors’ Management Letter and the related board representations.
In addition to the normal responsibilities of a Trustee the Treasurer will:

oversee budgets, internal management accounts and annual financial statements before presentation to the Board of Trustees;

ensure that proper accounting records are kept, financial resources are properly invested and economically spent;

liaise with the Chief Executive and Operations Director as appropriate;

Role Summary
The Safeguarding lead will take the lead in ensuring that appropriate arrangements are in place for keeping students, volunteers and team members safe at Roots Academy.
You will promote the safety and welfare of young people involved in Roots Academy’s activities at all times.
Key tasks
- Take a lead role in developing, reviewing and implementing Roots Academy’s safeguarding policies and procedures: ensuring all safeguarding issues concerning students and volunteers who take part in Roots Academy’s activities are responded to appropriately.
- Make sure that everyone working or volunteering at Roots Academy, including the board of trustees, understands the safeguarding policy and procedures and knows what to do if they have concerns about a student or volunteer’s welfare.
- Develop and deliver safeguarding training.
- Make sure students and young people who are involved in activities at Roots Academy know who they can talk to if they have a welfare concern and understand what action the organisation will take in response.
- Receive and record information from anyone who has concerns about a student or volunteer who takes part in Roots Academy’s activities.
- Take the lead on responding to information that may constitute a safeguarding concern, including a concern that an adult involved with Roots Academy may present a risk to children or young people. This includes:
a. assessing and clarifying the information
b. making referrals to statutory organisations as appropriate
c. consulting with and informing the relevant members of the organisation’s management
d. following the organisation’s safeguarding policy and procedures.
- Liaise with, pass on information to and receive information from statutory agencies such as the police. This includes making formal referrals to agencies when necessary.
- Store and retain safeguarding records according to legal requirements and the organisation’s safeguarding policy and procedures.
- Work closely with the board of trustees the People Team Lead to ensure they are kept up to date with safeguarding issues and are fully informed of any concerns about organisational safeguarding practice.
- Report regularly to the board of trustees on issues relating to safeguarding, to ensure that safeguarding is seen as an ongoing priority issue and that safeguarding requirements are being followed at all levels of the organisation.

- Experience as a qualified social worker or safeguarding lead desirable

There are SSAFA branches throughout the UK and overseas. These are divided into small local areas that we call divisions. Each one has a treasurer to look after the accounts and funds in that division. This is a key role involving financial administration.
Why do we need you?
We’ve been supporting the Armed Forces community since 1885. Our clients come from all backgrounds and age groups and may have served in WW2 or in a more recent conflict like the Falklands or Afghanistan.
Our branches support local volunteers to deliver services to veterans, serving personnel and their families. Some branches are divided into smaller divisions to ensure the best local service delivery. Each branch has a team of volunteer caseworkers, support volunteers, executive roles, and fundraisers.
One of the key ways we help clients is by tapping into various sources of funding on their behalf. Monitoring and reconciling this flow of funding in and out of SSAFA accounts is important to ensure clients receive the support when needed and we can account for all charitable funds in our care.
When would you be needed and where would you be based?
As part of your local branch, you might have access to an office, but many volunteers are based at home. This flexible role involves using our on-line financial management system and on-line bank accounts and so can be done when and where suits you best.
What would you be doing?
- Maintaining and reconciling local bank accounts and recording transactions
- Ensuring funds are available to caseworkers, to provide immediate grants where appropriate.
- Making and recording all authorised payments
- Preparing year end accounts
- Working with the divisional secretary, advise on a local fundraising plan to cover divisional running costs.
- Identifying and returning any surplus monies from grants as appropriate
- Providing reports to the local SSAFA branch and to SSAFA’s Central Office
- Maintaining accurate records on our on-line finance management system
- Being a positive ambassador for SSAFA remembering that anyone you meet could be a potential client, volunteer or fundraiser.
- Volunteering within the standards and values of SSAFA including observing our policies such as the Volunteering policy and data protection policy (these will be covered in your training and local induction.)
The remit of this role may change over the next 12-18 months depending on the outcome of a trial currently being undertaken.

This role is about coordination and administration. As part of your local branch, you might have access to an office, but many volunteers are based at home. The role would suit someone looking to offer a regular time commitment each week.
What would you be doing?
- Acting as the first point of contact for SSAFA in the local area
- Taking enquiries from potential clients and potential volunteers
- Matching new clients to available caseworkers
- Supporting caseworkers, particularly new volunteers
- Working with the local publicity officer to promote SSAFA locally.
- Providing reports to the local SSAFA branch and to SSAFA’s Central Office
- Maintaining accurate records on our on-line case management system
- Coordinating SSAFA Visitors and Helpers (if applicable)
- Organising local meetings to keep all volunteers up to date with the latest training and information.
- Being a positive ambassador for SSAFA remembering that anyone you meet could be a potential client, volunteer or fundraiser.
- Volunteering within the standards and values of SSAFA including observing our policies such as the Volunteering policy and data protection policy (these will be covered in your training and local induction.)

Main Duties and Responsibilities:
- Lead the development of ADC’s social impact strategy, including practical tools and systems that not only track and measure impact performance, but also integrate impact analysis into strategy and decision-making
- Lead the development of ADC’s fundraising strategy, with a focus on developing long-term strategic public and private sector partnerships with global and regional corporates, institutions, foundations and high net worth individuals
- Play a role in relation to revenue generation by helping to define market relevant value propositions for consulting services based on our Theory of Change, with a goal of achieving a business model that is financially sustainable and delivers on ADC’s strategic vision for catalysing social impact
- Lead the creation of new social impact programs, interventions and goals that will inspire and drive the organisation to deliver social impact at scale, and ensuring that the ADC approach and Theory of Change is upheld and enhanced
- Lead the development of thought leadership initiatives that position ADC as an influential driver of systemic social change in Africa and leader in social impact research
- Play a role in creating and maintaining social impact content, and making it accessible to our Marketing & Communications team for sharing with internal and external audiences to promote ADC’s work
- Coordinate and provide oversight and support to the Social Impact team, guiding recruitment and onward career development of team members
Knowledge, Skills, and Experience:
Essential
- +15 years of experience in the not-for-profit sector
- A track record of leading successful fundraising campaigns and grants applications
- Experience of design and delivery of social impact programs
- Excellent stakeholder management skills, with the ability to develop long term relationships with institutional sponsors and individual major donors
- Familiarity with impact assessment methodologies and latest developments in the impact measurement field
- Ability to create powerful narratives that present social impact in a simple manner
- Ability to drive strategy in a multi-disciplinary and multi-cultural team environment
- Demonstrated ability to create global and regional networks across the industry
- Ability to actively take initiative and help set things up in a start-up environment
- Ability to actively seek and give input in a collaborative team environment
- A committed team player with good communication skills
- Available to volunteer at least 10-15 hours a week

Our branches support local volunteers to deliver services to veterans, serving personnel and their families. Some branches are divided into smaller divisions to ensure the best local service delivery. Each branch has a team of volunteer caseworkers, support volunteers, executive roles, and fundraisers.
One of the key ways we help clients is by tapping into various sources of funding on their behalf. Monitoring and reconciling this flow of funding in and out of SSAFA accounts is important to ensure clients receive the support when needed and we can account for all charitable funds in our care.
When would you be needed and where would you be based?
As part of your local branch, you might have access to an office, but many volunteers are based at home. This flexible role involves using our on-line financial management system and on-line bank accounts and so can be done when and where suits you best.
What would you be doing?
- Maintaining and reconciling local bank accounts and recording transactions
- Ensuring funds are available to caseworkers, to provide immediate grants where appropriate.
- Making and recording all authorised payments
- Preparing year end accounts
- Working with the divisional secretary, advise on a local fundraising plan to cover divisional running costs.

Purpose of the Trustee role
Members of the BSR Board of Trustees make up the governing body of the society. Trustees are responsible for ensuring BSR remains true to its charitable purpose and objects set out in its governing documents and for meeting BSR’s legal and financial duties as a registered charity. BSR is also a registered company limited by guarantee and therefore all Trustees automatically become company directors registered at Companies House. The BSR Board of Trustees is made up of both elected member trustees (representing the healthcare professionals that make up BSRs membership) and appointed lay trustees.

Key Responsibilities
- Contributing to the strategic direction of BSR setting overall policy, defining goals, setting targets, and evaluating performance
- Ensure that BSR as a charity complies with charity law, and with the requirements of the Charity Commission as regulator, including that BSR remains true to its charitable purpose
- Safeguarding the charity’s assets, including its financial sustainability
- Be the custodian of and champion BSR’s values
- Demonstrate commitment to promoting equality, diversity, and inclusion
- Scrutinise board papers, contributing to discussions, providing advice and guidance on new initiatives
- Support, constructively challenge, and motivate the Chief Executive and other senior staff
- Work in a collegiate way with fellow Board members to support the Chair and to provide timely, robust decision-making and leadership.
- Join other standing committees as required by the Chair of the Board of Trustees.
Time commitment
- Attending four Board of Trustees meetings per year and other governance committee meetings as required (meetings are a mix of in-person and online)
- Attending the BSR Annual General Meeting (normally held in June).
As well as attending the set committee meetings listed above, trustees may also be asked from time to time to:
- Attend events and other meetings on behalf of BSR
- Attend governance and finance training sessions. A comprehensive induction is provided for all new Trustees, including access to external financial training as required
- Be available by email or for calls between board meetings for advice and to make decisions by circulation.
Skills, Knowledge and Expertise
Owing to changes on the BSR Board of Trustees, BSR is particularly keen to hear from those with experience of:

We enable all global stakeholders meet the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals by 2030, reaching over 250M in over 120 countries via our projects and partners.
What will you be doing?
You should be an experienced and talented video editor and content creator.

The editor will
- Create short intro and ending animations/transitions for the various SM videos
- Create new videos from copyright free content on various trending topics and news in liason with the team
- Edit the interviews (Zoom/Teams) and additional footage/still to create social media ready files for YT, LI, FB, TW and IG
- Add subtitles and captions as needed for the videos
- You would need to have your own professional equipment and software and a camera and lights (if you are also a videographer - preferred, not mandatory)
What are we looking for?

The Organisation
The Laurel Trust is a charity founded to support research and innovation for schools and academies in areas of multi-deprivation including opportunity areas, supporting schools serving disadvantaged communities to make a sustainable difference to children’s learning and life chances.
We have successfully supported over 40 imaginative projects nationally. This year we are funding further projects that will make that make a crucial difference to children’s lives and that excite and interest us.
Our recent interim strategic review has reconfirmed that our mission is supporting schools to further develop evidence informed practice.
The Role
The Board of Trustees are responsible for the overall governance and strategic direction of The Laurel Trust, managing its resources and finances and developing the organisation’s aims, objectives, and goals in accordance with their agreed strategy, and legal and regulatory guidelines.
The statutory duties of a Trustee are:
• To ensure the organisation complies with its governing document.
• To ensure the organisation applies its resources exclusively for its charitable purpose.
• To contribute actively to the Board of Trustees' role in giving firm strategic direction to the organisation, setting overall policy, defining goals and setting targets and evaluating performance against agreed targets.
• To safeguard the good name and values of the organisation.
• To ensure the effective and efficient administration of the organisation.
• To ensure the financial stability of the organisation
• To make full use of any specific skills, knowledge, or experience to help the Board make good decisions.
Person specification
• A strong track record of proven and significant achievement in one of the following fields:
• Charity governance with a clear understanding of the legal duties, responsibilities and liabilities of trusteeship and an understanding of the respective roles of the Chair, Trustees and Executive Officers
• Charity finance, ideally although not essentially, with an added understanding of investment management and grant giving
• Senior leadership in a primary education setting with particular expertise in Special Educational Needs, disability and multi-agency support environment
• Educational leadership in any phase of education in areas of multiple deprivation
• Project leadership in a health and wellbeing environment
• Community engagement, particularly in terms of project management
• Educational research and dissemination or education publishing with specific expertise in preparing and assessing publications
• Policy making and/or influencing policy.
• A proven ability to work effectively as a member of a team while contributing an independent perspective
• Awareness of current issue affecting teaching and education.
• A proven track record of being able to process detail and get to the heart of an issue
• A commitment to The Laurel Trust’s values and purpose
• An understanding of, and commitment to, the values of accountability, probity and openness
• A willingness to devote the time and effort required to effectively discharge the duties of this role
