Do you have the financial management skills and enthusiasm to help an organisation that supports communities and other charities in West Berkshire ?
You could be the next Treasurer for the Volunteer Centre West Berkshire.
Set up in 1974 to support local communities and charities, primarily in West Berkshire, we became a Charitable Incorporated Organisation in 2014. We continue to match local people to local need, with our comprehensive volunteer recruitment service, our Handybus, voluntary car and Shopmobility schemes, and our general advice and bespoke support for local voluntary and charity groups.
Our income in 2023 was £270k, matched by almost-similar spending, so we’re not a large organisation, with our finances managed day-to-day by our Finance Officer and CEO.
The role and what we are looking for in a new Treasurer
As we celebrate our 50th year of voluntary success, we’ve recruited other new trustees and are now looking for a Treasurer to take over from our longstanding Treasurer, who is retiring after 17 years’ service.
Our Board includes people with experience and skills in governing our charity and responding to the needs of local people and local organisations. We expect our Treasurer to have empathy with our cause and our beneficiaries, awareness of the needs in West Berkshire, as well as provide strategic overview and guidance to our Board on the charity's financial standing and future planning.
Although we’d welcome your financial qualification, that’s not a requirement, as our finances aren’t complex. An understanding of how charity finance works would be beneficial of course, with the ability to communicate financial information clearly, especially to other trustees. Support from our CEO and Finance Officer will always be available, as they will be dealing with the day-to-day finances.
It would be great if you have prior experience of charity trusteeship, but that’s not absolutely essential; we can provide and access training focused on trustee duties and responsibilities. Full induction to our organisation will be provided, plus specialist support for you as a new trustee. You may find membership of the Honorary Treasurer’s Forum of benefit.
We are a charity not a business, but we apply business principles to governing our organisation. We welcome fresh expertise and experience from a variety of backgrounds to our charity, as we want to expand the diversity, in all meanings of the word, of our Board to reflect all our communities.
The focus of a trustee role is strategic, and trustees will not be expected to get involved in the organisation’s operations on a day-to-day basis; however, regular contact and liaison with other trustees, and our CEO and Finance Officer is expected.
We ask for at least two hours of your time per month, which includes all meetings, discussions, etc., which will increase at year-end and for our AGM. You will need access to digital communications, as much of our charity’s business and Board meetings are run that way.
How to apply
This appointment is being managed for us by inVOLve Community Services, another charity-support organisation, who offer a no-obligation discussion by phone or video. A detailed Role Description and Skills Specification can be made available to you upon request.
Trustee appointments are subject to satisfactory references.
Your CV or similar will be read by our existing trustees, and an interview offered as soon as mutually convenient.
I need to know more
Contact Mike Allen, Trustee Recruitment & Governance, via Quick Apply below, for more information and arrange to have a no-obligation initial informal discussion (Teams/Zoom/phone) and support in your application.

What is a Community Volunteer Coordinator?
Community Volunteers provide practical help to serving personnel and their families. In this role you will be coordinating and supporting a team of Community Volunteers providing the type of support local families tell us they need.
Why do we need you?

Some people find themselves facing illness, bereavement or unexpected financial problems. Day-to-day activities can become difficult without a little help. That’s where you come in! Could you spare a few hours a week to support a local team of volunteers lending a helping hand to military families?
When would you be needed and where would you be based?
This role is about coordination and administration so many volunteers are able to do this from home or at their place of work.
What would you be doing?
- Accepting referrals, matching Community Volunteers with beneficiaries and overseeing the progress of cases.
- Working with the Serving Community Team and a Regional Operations Support Manager, to recruit and induct new Community Volunteers as needed
- Supported by the Learning and Development team and Volunteer Experience team in Central Office, ensuring that all volunteers undertake required training and tasks for their role
- Providing support, supervision and guidance to Community Volunteers
- Collating and sharing reporting information about the support provided to beneficiaries
- Keeping up to date with training and SSAFA news so that you are best able to support volunteers and beneficiaries
- Volunteering within the standards and values of SSAFA
- Adhering to SSAFA’s policies and procedures at all times, including SSAFA’s: safeguarding; volunteering policy; equality, diversity and inclusion; health & safety; data protection; confidentiality
What can you gain from this volunteering role?
- Give back to the serving community
- Support and friendship from the SSAFA Serving Community Team and the wider SSAFA community
- Build networks across your local area and meet new people
- Experience, training and skills that you can highlight on your CV and in job interviews
- Better physical and mental health – studies show that volunteers live longer and experience lower levels of stress and depression!
What about training and support?
- Training course for Community Volunteer Coordinators. Your experienced trainer will prepare you for your role and you’ll find out about the support available to you.
- Online training modules so you know how to keep beneficiaries, their families and personal information safe.
- Access to a range of online training modules to support with continued learning and development.
- Support from SSAFA’s Welfare team, Volunteer Experience team and Regional Operations Support Manager.
- Reimbursement of out-of-pocket expenses.
- Volunteers will be covered by SSAFA's Public Liability insurance while carrying out their role.
What are we looking for?
- Friendly and approachable people with good listening skills, patience and empathy
- Respectful and non-judgemental approach with beneficiaries, their family, other agencies and SSAFA colleagues
- Good IT skills e.g. ability to use Outlook and Excel – you will receive your own SSAFA email address.
- An understanding of the importance of confidentiality and boundaries with regards to providing support to beneficiaries
- Experience of organising or coordinating people would be advantageous but not essential
- Ability to travel to meet volunteers and beneficiaries
- A willingness to adhere to all relevant organisational policies and procedures.
We welcome volunteers of all backgrounds, abilities, races, sexual orientations, socio-economic backgrounds, and of all faiths and none. SSAFA are committed to making reasonable adjustments to support volunteers with disabilities, so they have access to the same opportunities and experiences as volunteers who do not.
Please note this is a volunteer role and does not form part of any contract of employment.
Minimum Age: 18
Are references required? Yes. Two-character references from people who know you well (not family members).
Is a criminal record check required? Yes* (the cost of this check will be covered by SSAFA)
*A disclosure certificate that contains convictions, cautions, warnings, reprimands or other information does not automatically mean that you are not able to volunteer. All certificates will be reviewed on a case-by-case basis and, if required and where possible, a modified or alternative role will be offered.
We work to make SSAFA as safe as possible for everyone. Part of this involves volunteers attending an informal interview, providing two suitable references, and completing relevant training and background checks for your role.

About Us
With Jesus. With each other. To the edges.
We are passionate about God’s mission and eager to see more and more people become followers of Jesus. For 225 years CMS has been at the forefront of global mission, living out the gospel of Jesus, seeing lives changed and communities transformed across the globe. Often in ways we could not have anticipated.
Founded by William Wilberforce and other members of the Clapham Sect group of activists in 1799, today CMS supports hundreds of people and partners in mission working together across Africa, Asia, Latin America, Europe and the Middle East. We also train UK Christians for creative, ground-breaking mission in Britain.
Context
With mission no longer being a “West to the rest” endeavour, and as Christianity has flourished in parts of the majority world, we have undertaken a prayerful review of our organisation, in order to discern our mission call for this generation.
We have rediscovered and been re-inspired by the pioneering spirit of our founders. We believe our calling for this time is to the “edges”: to the edges of society, the edges of church and to the edges of our comfort zones. To that end, we have been aligning our organisation and focus to play a catalytic role in facilitating movements of mission to and from these edges.
The Role
Taking a listening and reflective approach, as Chair you will draw out the diverse skills and wisdom among our trustees, ensure excellence in our governance, support the executive leadership in delivering our refreshed vision and play a role in strengthening our links with the Global Anglican Communion.
If you share our passion for following Jesus and making disciples at the edges, bring experience at board level, a highly relational approach and a global perspective, we would love to hear from you.
For more information see the job pack attached. Closing date 14 August.
