The Community Support/Reach Out volunteer will be volunteering remotely, providing online support and guidance to visitors of The Forward Trust Website communicating in real time using web chat.
The Reach Out Service sits within our Recovery Support Department and is aimed at offering friendly and confidential listening support and assistance. The role involves utilising your communication skills to establish rapport with individuals seeking drug and alcohol help and or to talk about their mental health or other varied life challenges. You will be supporting people who are seeking help for drugs and alcohol help for themselves or from family members concerned for their loved one.
Training is provided to all volunteers to support them with their volunteering role and enable them to further their skills and experience with our client group.
ACCOUNTABILITIES
Time Commitment: We recommend that volunteers can commit to an average of 3 hours online per week for a minimum period of six months.
Service Delivery
- Be available for the duration of the shift to answer web-chat/calls as they happen.
- Engage with individuals in a friendly and empathetic manner.
- Gain an understanding of the individual needs and sign post to appropriate organisations for further support or explore specialist services as required.
- Link individuals into Forward Trusts community drug and alcohol services when required and link individuals into drug and alcohol help in other geographical areas where Forward Trust does not have a service.
- Report any Safeguarding concerns to shift supervisor and follow safeguarding procedures as appropriate.
- Respond to offline messages at the beginning of each shift.
- Debrief with and ask for support and guidance from Reach Out Coordinator regarding any concerns arising from web chat conversations.
- Provide handover to supervisor and/or next volunteers covering the shift prior to logging off
- To book shifts in a timely fashion and inform the Reach Out Coordinator of any need to cancel a shift at the earliest opportunity.
- Engage with support and supervision offered by placement supervisor.

TRAINING & INDUCTION
Induction training will be provided to the volunteer and will include the following E-Learning (Data Protection/GDPR/PECR, Safeguarding – Knowledge and Health & Safety – Knowledge).
A full induction to your team including placement specific policies and procedures. Additional volunteer training will be discussed and offered according to the need of the volunteer in placement.

What is the time commitment?

Educators and facilitators wanted to help East London Waterworks Park deliver its environmental learning goals.
East London Waterworks Park is a volunteer-led charity that has won a 2024 New London Architecture award and raised £2m towards buying land from the Department for Education to transform the 14-acre Thames Water Depot on Lea Bridge Road on the border of Waltham Forest and Hackney, into a new biodiverse park with natural swimming ponds, forest schools and community spaces.
We are looking for educator and facilitator volunteers to participate in our community-led working group, who are collaborating with schools, universities and youth groups that help the design of the park.
Examples of projects are:
- collaborating on nature walk activities for schools
- supporting university students interviewing teachers
- creating lesson plans to co-design the park.
Schools, universities and youth groups we've collaborated with include:

We're looking for people to lead on these projects and facilitate the direction of the learning working group.
The Learning Circle currently meets monthly on a Wednesday evening at 8pm for an hour on Google Meet and spends voluntary time outside of the meeting completing agreed tasks remotely.
You should be an experienced teacher, educational consultant, forest school leader, training and development specialist, learning designer, facilitator or any other kind of role creating learning projects, programmes and experiences. Our roles are quite flexible. We hope that people bring radical imagination, peace with nature, and courageous inclusiveness to the role.
Your support will help young people and learners improve their environmental knowledge of design and research as well as contributing to our community-owned park. This will in turn provide a sense of stewardship over the land once the park is created and student's ideas have been built into the park.
Creating learning projects with educational institutions will also help our charity with the strategy to buy the land through showing the value of our environmental education programme before we create the park.

Can you spare a few hours a week to support members of the Colostomy UK Facebook Support group?
We are looking for volunteers who can help respond to queries from group members on our closed Facebook group during the evenings (Mon – Fri, 5 - 9pm) and at weekends (Sat & Sun, 9am - 9pm).
Members of the support group are generally very positive, encouraging and kind to each other. Generally, members want to help each other, and the group has a real sense of community. The group is for anyone with a stoma or who has genuine interest in supporting someone with a stoma.
What will you do?
You will be logged in and respond to posts as Colostomy UK. We ask that you look at the group approximately once an hour during your shift and respond to posts as and when required. This may involve giving advice (never medical advice) or signposting back to our website.
You don’t need to respond immediately if you are unsure, however we do ask that you have a basic understanding of the group guidelines and alert the office team to any concerns. We ask that you delete any posts without delay that are obviously against the rules (we’ll tell you what those are during the training).
We have a weekly rota, and you can sign up for the time slots that work best for you. Shifts can be scheduled for the same day and time each week, or vary, as suits you.
How will we support you?
You will complete two hours of comprehensive training before getting started, so you are fully aware of what you need to do and when.
We’ll buddy you with an established volunteer who can support you in the initial few weeks.
You will be part of our WhatsApp group which includes other volunteers and the office team, so if you are ever unsure on how to help someone, others can help. Members of the WhatsApp group are happy to be contacted out of hours so very available if needed.
What qualities and skills will you need?
- Great if you are an ostomate but you don’t have to be.
- Good writing skills and able to respond to messages in a timely manner via your device or PC.
- Correspond in a supportive and person specific manner with members of the group.
- Empathy with and enthusiasm for helping people.
- Good understanding of our charity and the support we offer.

Tender aims to prevent domestic abuse and sexual violence by educating children and young people about the issues through creative projects. Our programmes are safe, enjoyable, and age-appropriate which allow people to engage with sensitive topics and “rehearse” for real-life scenarios. Participants are encouraged to learn through script-work, role-play and creative media such as films and art. Throughout, we enable young people to explore their choices, rights and expectations in relationships and to recognise the early warning signs of abuse.
Our Trustees are vital to us, setting the strategy for the organisation, ensuring its financial stability and offering insights that help us to ask and answer questions. The Board of Trustees lead and control Tender and are responsible for its governance, policy and affairs. Trustees have responsibilities under charity and company law, and also under Tender’s Memorandum and Articles of Association, for directing the affairs of the organisation, ensuring that it is solvent, well run and delivers Tender’s objects. The day-to-day running of the charity is delegated to the CEO and the Senior Leadership Team.
All trustees are expected to:
- Safeguard and promote the reputation, vision, mission and values of Tender
- Ensure the charity complies with its governing documents, relevant legislation and regulatory requirements
- Determine the overall strategic direction and development of Tender, by agreeing organisational polices, budgets and objectives, and to ensure targets are set and performance is measured against those targets
- Contribute any specific skills, knowledge, and experience which they may have to help the Board of Trustees reach sound decisions
- Ensure the effective and efficient administration of Tender and its financial stability
- Ensure that key risks are being identified, monitored and controlled effectively
- As requested by the Chair, represent the Chair of the Board at functions and events, and lead or be a member of committees/panels/groups
- Collectively own and hold the Board to account for its decisions and activities, ensuring the avoidance of any personal conflict of interest
- Provide support and challenge to Tender’s CEO in the exercise of their delegated authority and affairs
- Engage with volunteers, Patrons and other beneficiaries to keep informed about the organisation's activities and wider issues that affect Tender's work
- Attend Board meetings, adequately prepared to contribute to discussions
What we are looking for

- Leadership, communication and influencing skills
- Sound independent judgement and integrity
- An understanding of the legal duties, responsibilities and liabilities of trusteeship, or a willingness to learn (we will provide training and guidance on charity governance if you do not have previous experience)
- A strong personal commitment to equity, diversity and inclusion
- The ability to inspire trust and confidence in people
- A willingness and ability to devote the necessary time and effort to prepare for and attend board and committee meetings, including remaining in the role for a minimum term of two years
For trustees with communications experience, we are also looking for:
- Experience in developing or implementing communications strategies
- Experience of building communications capacity within a growing organisation
- Knowledge of crisis communications management
- An ability to use communications to aid the diversification of our fundraising
For trustees with policy and influencing experience, we are looking for:
- Knowledge of UK politics and parliamentary processes
- Knowledge of policy areas and governmental departments relevant to Tender, in particular Education, Health and Home Office
- Experience of developing and promoting policy and campaign strategies for an organisation, and creating effective public affairs influencing strategies
- Experience of engaging with stakeholder at different levels of government (Parliament, civil service, local authority) to influence policy decisions
