The GROW Traineeship gives people with lived experience of homelessness and/or other related disadvantages (including but not limited to; contact with the criminal justice system, mental ill-health or substance use) access to paid employment, training and personal development opportunities. The traineeship lasts for up to 12 months, and each GROW receives personalised training and support to help remove some of the barriers that may have prevented them from getting meaningful employment. We are looking for someone who is passionate about using their own experience to help make change for people in Manchester experiencing bad housing and homelessness.
About Shelter
A home is a fundamental human need, as essential as education or healthcare. Yet millions of people across Britain struggle on a daily basis with homelessness, bad housing conditions, soaring rents, discrimination and the threat of eviction. So, we are striving for change, with individuals, in communities, across society, and leading the way to a safe home. We need ambitious, best-in-class individuals who are passionate about our cause to join us at this exciting time. This is your chance to play a part in the fundamental change we are striving to achieve.
At Shelter we are united by our purpose to defend the right to a safe home. Our enemy is the social injustice at the core of the escalating housing emergency. We believe that to win that fight, we must be representative of the people we are here to help and those who support our movement for change. In all our people decisions, we take pride in being inclusive, fair, equitable and transparent. We have committed to combat racism both within and outside Shelter and welcome you on our journey to becoming a truly anti-racist organisation.
About the role
This is a great opportunity to work with a lead provider of homelessness and housing advice and support and gain invaluable experience while being part of an exciting employability programme centred on lived experience.
The service provides early help for adults facing multiple disadvantages and is part of two wider programmes: Manchester Bringing Service Together for People in Places (BST PiP) programme and the national Changing Futures programme. You will work alongside the Navigators, services and agencies to identify blocks and barriers within the support systems for people experiencing multiple disadvantage and come up with solutions. We emphasise the importance of early intervention and prevention, to deliver a person centred approach which plays to clients’ strengths. Our aim is to transform local systems to enable positive outcomes. You will put the lived experience of people facing multiple disadvantage at the heart of everything you do as they are involved in its delivery and shaping its future.
About you
We are looking for people who have experience of overcoming personal challenges and barriers and who are passionate about using their own life experiences to help make positive change for others. Good communication skills and the ability to make people feel heard will also be essential. Basic computer skills, e.g. word processing, the internet and email would be useful, but support can be provided. Above all, we need people with a real desire to develop personally and learn new skills.
How to apply
We will be holding a pre-application support session to give people practical support and advice on how to create a CV and/or a supporting statement to apply for the role, or to pick up a paper application. These sessions will also give you the chance to find out more about the role. If you would like to come along, please contact us to book a slot. The session will take place on the following date: Wednesday 14th August, 2.30-4.30pm at Shelter Community Hub, Swan Buildings, 20 Swan Street Manchester M4 5JW (entrance on Cable Street)
To apply you will need to submit a copy of your CV and a supporting statement using the ‘apply for job’ button below.
Please address points 1 – 4 of the ‘About You’ section of the JD in your support statement. Please use real examples and write up to 350 words per point. CVs without an accompanying supporting statement will not be considered.
For more information on who to contact for our pre-application session, please head to the apply link at the top and bottom of the page.
When applying, we appreciate it may feel unusual to be talking about your lived experience to a prospective employer. Please be assured that we ask for this only to assess your suitability for a role that’s designed to help people to use their experiences to develop a career.
We are hiring for 2 GROW Trainees, each role will be quite different in terms of day-to-day so if you would like to be considered for both roles, please make this clear on your supporting statement.
Benefits
We offer a wide range of benefits, including 30 days of annual leave, enhanced family friendly policies, pension and interest free travel loans. Our employees also have access to a tenancy deposit loan, payroll giving, cycle to work scheme and an employee assistance programme. Shelter helps millions of people every year struggling with bad housing or homelessness through our advice, support and legal services. And we campaign to make sure that, one day, no one will have to turn to us for help. We’re here so no one has to fight bad housing or homelessness on their own.
When applying, we appreciate it may feel unusual to be talking about your lived experience to a prospective employer. Please be assured that we ask for this only to assess your suitability for a role that’s designed to help people to use their experiences to develop a career. If you feel you have the necessary lived experience, please apply and draw this out as much as you can in the application to increase your chances of being invited to interview.

ABOUT SUZY LAMPLUGH TRUST:
This post represents an opportunity for the right candidate to join the UK’s founding personal safety charity and leading authority on stalking.
The Suzy Lamplugh Trust was born out of the tragic story of Suzy Lamplugh, a 25-year-old estate agent who went missing whilst at work in 1986, was never found, and was eventually declared deceased in 1993.
